Having had control of his piece of the entity for years, Reverend Meddler couldn’t leave well enough alone. He’s been soul-searching for years what to do with it as he moves from place to place, all the while growing poorer and more socially disenfranchised. Nevertheless he’s done his moral part, always keeping it safely frozen until now. The much larger chunk of it is supposedly encapsulated and still sunken in the deep and frigid waters of the West Aleutians, within the Atka reserve. (It’s kept there for only some unforeseen national emergency.)
In the meantime, Meg Nichols has decided to move back to Abberville with her son Paul’s biological father and try rebooting her life and career, since living in NYC didn’t pan out as she had hoped. Meddler unaware of her retreat, has been enticed by the Colony to slice-and-dice his rat-size sample, sending unlucky NYC recipients some unusual and seemingly semi-transparent gifts, kept on dry ice for the quick ‘Overnight and guaranteed before 10:00 AM’ speedy deliveries. Myra Carter taking over Meg’s newly remodeled and upscale #712 apartment, is mistakenly at the top of that shipping list—or should we say menu.
Combined with the various strikes that are already beginning to cripple New York City, the Colony’s insertion merely makes a difficult situation much, much worse.
