The Spook in the Stacks

Rate this book
Halloween in North Carolina’s Outer Banks becomes seriously tricky when librarian Lucy Richardson stumbles across something extra unusual in the rare books section: a dead body.

Wealthy businessman Jay Ruddle is considering donating his extensive collection of North Carolina historical documents to the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, but the competition for the collection is fierce. Unfortunately, while the library is hosting a lecture on ghostly legends, Jay becomes one of the dearly departed in the rare books section. Now, it’s up to Lucy Richardson and her fellow librarians to bone up on their detective skills and discover who is responsible for this wicked Halloween homicide.

Meanwhile, very strange things are happening at the library—haunted horses are materializing in the marsh, the lights seem to have an eerie life of their own, and the tiny crew of a model ship appears to move around when no one is watching. Is Lucy at her wit’s end? Or can it be that the Bodie Island Lighthouse really is haunted?

With The Legend of Sleepy Hollow on everyone’s minds and ghoulish gossip on everyone’s lips, Lucy will need to separate the clues from the boos if she wants to crack this case without losing her head.

The Spook in the Stacks is a great Halloween cozy tale from the Lighthouse Library Mysteries written by Eva Gates. I've read most of the author's work under the name Vicki Delany, and I'm now halfway through this series. I seem to prefer her other work more, but I enjoy this one enough that I plan to keep reading them all. A former resident returns to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, keen to bequest his rare book/map collection to a library. Lucy's Lighthouse Library is one of the final candidates, and she's excited to make it happen. The man's granddaughter takes a liking to Lucy too, but during their spooky Halloween event, someone ends up dead, complicating the bequest. Plus, Connor's in re-election mode for mayor of the town, and Louise Jane wants to tell ghost stories. All in good fun, the series makes me laugh. But it's missing a little something for some reason when it comes to the overall plotting... something Gates is usually amazing at. In this installment, there are more suspects but the end result seemed to come from nowhere. It's such a varied sub-genre where sometimes the guilty party is obvious, sometimes it's a weird solution, and then again, several find the middle road. I already ordered the next book from the library for this series and plan to read it mid-month.

It's Halloween and the library in Bodie Lighthouse is decorated for the season. The Lighthouse Library is also in the running to receive a donation of a historical documents collection from a rich businessman, Jay Ruddle. Unfortunately, during a lecture at the library on local ghostly legends, Ruddle is found dead in the library's rare book room. Spooky things start happening in the library after Ruddle's death.....lights flickering, ghostly horses appearing and inanimate skeletal sailors on a model ship seem to move by themselves. Who killed Ruddle and is the Lighthouse Library haunted?

I love this series! The location is awesome. I live in NC and have been to Nag's Head and Bodie Lighthouse. ;) The characters are likable and quirky. And the mystery is always entertaining and interesting. Halloween is my favorite holiday so I very much enjoyed this spooky visit to the OBX and its lighthouse library. The mystery had plenty of suspects and spooky twists. The pacing was great. The story definitely kept my attention from beginning to end. Great new addition to this series! There are four books so far in the Lighthouse Library mystery series.

My only issue with this series is the fact that Bodie Lighthouse is a real location at Nag's Head. And the lighthouse is too small to house a library or an apartment of any kind. I have no problem with authors taking poetic license a little bit with actual places....but when it comes to Bodie Lighthouse, it's a biggg step away from reality. I would have preferred that she used a fictitious name instead of using an actual existing historical lighthouse if fact and fiction were going to be so far apart. The actual Bodie Lighthouse has just enough room for the metal spiral staircase to the top.....no place for a library or someone to live. No second floor. No nothing. Stairs to the top....and a sturdy metal platform at the top where you can look out on the ocean and the surrounding countryside. There is a visitor's center nearby that is big enough to house a library (it's a gift shop and information center in reality) and an apartment. But, I can see how the idea of a library actually inside a lighthouse with the main character living there too was much cooler than locating the books inside a regular building near a lighthouse. :) But still.....knowing the real place and reading about the fictional place always pulls me out of the story. I still love this series....and this one issue does not effect my reading enjoyment all that much. Just me being a North Carolinian. :) [As an aside: Nag's Head is awesome. The surf can get a bit rough there, but I highly recommend it as a tourist destination. It has the right mix of quiet beach, touristy fun and local flair. Plus, great seafood and the beautiful pier! I love it there! Just don't expect Bodie (pronouced like beau-dee not like body) Lighthouse to have a library in it. You can buy a nice t-shirt that proclaims you climbed to the top though! Can you tell I love my state? :)]

I love this series and I was so happy to find out that it was continued with a new publisher.

The library in the lighthouse never fails to get me dreaming. I wish there was such a thing but I have yet to see a lighthouse that would actually be big enough to accomodate a library and an appartment. But hey, this is fiction so let's dream and enjoy.

Spook in the Stacks can be read as a stand alone but I thoroughly enjoyed knowing and remembering the characters and their strengths and flaws.

This is a fast moving mystery with some interesting and some excentric, colourful characters that provided for an interesting reading time. I was sad to finish the story and find myself back at home on my couch. It was written so well that I felt at home in the story.

It is a fun and easy Halloween read.

I requested this book on Netgalley and would like to thank Crooked Lane Books and the author for providing me a copy.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I admit I was late to the party on this series. I started reading it in April and was so taken by the premise of a library in a lighthouse I read all three looking forward to this new release. I could have started with this one because with the publisher change the author wrote this so it could stand on its own but the first three were great stories and I was able to enjoy all the prior character development.

In this story, Lucy’s book group is reading Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Louise Jane’s Halloween Ghost Story Lecture Series is in full swing. The library is also being considered to house a collection of North Carolina historical documents and the owner, Jay Ruddle, has come to town to see the library for himself with his granddaughter and his private curator. While the granddaughter is excited to listen to the ghost stories, he would rather spend his time in the rare books section of the library. Lucy finds him there after the lecture is over. . . dead in the chair. The murderer has used the outside event as a cover for their crime. Anyone in attendance could have killed Mr. Ruddle and slipped back out without anyone even noticing. That coupled with some unusual sighting around the library makes Lucy think the stories of the lighthouse being haunted may be true. But she knows there is no way a ghost killed Mr. Ruddle.

This is an excellent story, just as I have come to expect from this author.

The characters really come alive within these pages. I enjoyed that Theodore “Teddy” Kowalski was featured more this time and that both Lucy and us readers got to see a different side to this man. He was much more likable and not quite as creepy. I hope we continue to see this side. We get to know the library staff, Lucy, Bertie, Ronald, and Charlene better in each installment of this series. I absolutely love Charlie, named for Charles Dickens, the library cat. He really is a special animal.

I was pulled into this mystery by many elements. The murder itself was very intriguing. It couldn’t have been planned so it happened in the heat of the moment? or was it just because the opportunity arose? Was it someone close to him? or someone from his past? As Lucy tried to pull the clues together I was right there with her. There were plenty of red herrings in this Outer Banks tale. I was astonished when the real killer was revealed.

I was also drawn by the observations Lucy made in the fog outside of the library. Was she dreaming? Was her imagination out of control? Was someone pulling a prank? Or were her visions real?

I also found Lucy and her friends helping out Connor’s mayoral campaign added an interesting element. Connor busy with senior citizen lunches throughout the whole story was funny too. To find out if he won, you are going to have to read the book. 🙂

I am always drawn in by the setting. The library in the lighthouse that stretches to meet the author’s imagination and my default ours. The author’s descriptive talents make it so easy to follow her into the wonderful world of the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library including Lucy’s Aerie, on the 4th floor. Such a wonderful place.

Eva Gates has given us a story that is fun and unique, with charming characters, realistic dialogue, and a marvelous mystery. I am so happy that I found this series and hope there will be many more virtual vacations to the Outer Banks and the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library!

It's Halloween at the Bodie Lighthouse Library and amongst the guests is a murder and victim. It's been way too long, almost four years since I read the third book in the series. Not because I didn't love it as I've rated all four books in the series as 4 star books. It was great getting to know Lucy, Bertie and the rest of the cast of characters again. Of the new characters introduced in this book my favorite has to be Professor Eddie McClanahan, odd, quirky, reader. I hope we see lots more of him in future books.
I briefly considered the killer to be a viable suspect
This book is worth reading just so that you can imagine, you live and work at the library like Lucy.
My apartment’s not very big—being in a lighthouse—but I adore it. It’s small and perfect, with curved whitewashed walls decorated with paintings of the Outer Banks. The color scheme is white, yellow, and sage green, giving the place a bright cheerful feeling.

My lighthouse window faced east, so I could watch the sun rise over the ocean any time I wanted

Now that is the kind of place I could do some serious reading. I'm not waiting four years to read the next book, this was just too good.

Lucy Richardson is in her element working as the assistant librarian at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library. She’s surrounded by an eclectic group of staff members and the VIP library cat, Charles. Trouble begins when an elderly multi-millionaire approaches Bertie, the library director, about donating his personal collection of Outer Banks historical documents to the library. The competitors for the collection are determined they’ll receive it at whatever lengths they have to go to—even including discrediting Bertie or the Lighthouse Library. However, there’s a murder in the rare book room of the library which puts a crimp in everyone’s plans.

Author Eva Gates makes a smooth transition to her new publisher, Crooked Lane Books, with book four of the Lighthouse Library Mystery series. The story kept my interest with plenty of plot twists to lead me away from the true killer’s identity. I was surprised at the reveal. The setting is at Halloween, and there is a paranormal twist included and lots of fun scenes that are entertaining. I enjoyed the progress of Connor and Lucy’s relationship...slow, but sure. I believe cozy fans will be pleased with this story. My rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.

I really enjoyed this much-anticipated book in the Lighthouse Library series. Even though I may be one of those who hasn't read the others (yet, I do have them on hand) I didn't feel lost at any time since the author does a great job of explaining and catching readers up without giving away any of the juicy details from the previous mysteries. I was super surprised at who the killer was and loved the showdown. Can we just say that book nerds rule? ;) You'll see what I mean when you read it!

Halloween was close and Lucy wasn't anxious for it since it wasn't a favorite holiday. One of the overly-enthusiastic volunteers of the Lighthouse Library, Louise Jane, was going to give some talks on local spooky legends. It was all fun and games until the body of Jay Ruddle, a wealthy octogenarian who was going to pass his nautical maps and papers collection on to the library, was found in the rare book rooms, a lot less than alive. His granddaughter, Julia, was the prime suspect. Lucy vowed she was not going to get involved, but we all know how that goes, right? She and her library director, Bertie, did some sleuthing and found some other suspects that could have had a reason to kill the old man. Hopefully they can find the real killer before the suspect herself becomes a victim!

I've only read this book in the series so far and already I love these characters! I can't wait to start from the beginning and really see how it all began when Lucy arrived. The library cat, Charles, a Himalayan was so cool! He seems to have a sense about people he likes and loves to be petted and cuddled by anyone that comes into the library.

In this book it said that she'd only been in the Nags Head, NC area for several months so I guess the first three books cover a short time period and might be easy to binge read yet this summer, we'll see! All I know is, I can highly recommend this book! Well-plotted and written, plenty of suspects and just a little hint of Halloween (possibly explainable lol) spookiness!

The Lighthouse Library Mystery series is a favorite of mine, and my sister. I want to send a thank you to Crooked Lane Books for picking up this series and giving us readers more time with the wonderful characters.

It was so easy to fall back into the grove with protagonist Lucy Richardson and the crew of the Brodie Island Lighthouse library. Through the words of author Eva Gates, it was incredibly easy to picture the library and surrounding area, as well as hear the characters voices as I read their written words.

To say it was hard to put this book down would be an understatement. As with the first three books in this delightful series, THE SPOOK IN THE STACKS is a fast-moving mystery with an attention-grabbing plot. With Halloween thrown into the mix, this tale had something fun or exciting happening in every chapter. I simply couldn’t put it down until I had read the last word.

I am ecstatic that the Lighthouse Library Mystery Series is continuing with Cooked Lane Books. THE SPOOK IN THE STACKS is a terrific addition to the series, a wonderful homage to THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN, and can easily be read as a standalone book (but…for those of you new to the series, trust me, you will want to read assistant librarian Lucy’s entire adventures).

Halloween festivities are in full force at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library in North Carolina as the story opens. Even the library book club has the holiday spirit reading Washington Irving’s works. To add to the excitement, former resident Jay Ruddle has returned to his hometown looking for the perfect organization to receive his collection of North Carolina centric historical maps and books. It is down to two choices, with the lighthouse library in the lead, when Lucy discovers Ruddle dead in the rare books room of the lighthouse. Ruddle is known as a ruthless businessman, even as an octogenarian, and does have some enemies. There are plenty of suspects for Lucy to consider, all with good motive, and she definitely has her work cut out for her.

I really enjoyed THE SPOOK IN THE STACKS. I am a sucker for fall/harvest/Halloween cozy mysteries so this book is right up my alley. I am overjoyed to be back on Bodie Island and spend some time with Lucy, the other librarians, and, of course, Charlie the library cat. Though Gates’ lighthouse setting is a bit of a stretch of the imagination, it is just perfect for Lucy’s exploits. I love everything about the lighthouse, and how cool would it be to actually live in the top of a lighthouse (other than all those stairs)? Lucy is an intelligent, likable protagonist who is inquisitive by nature. It is not too far of a leap to see her involved in the murder investigation. I also really like her boyfriend/town mayor Connor. It is refreshing to have a love interest not in law enforcement. All of the characters are well developed and interesting, including Louise Jane who is so annoying and fun to dislike. We get to see a different side of book collector Theodore, which is nice.

There is more going on in the book than Ruddle’s murder, but his storyline is prominent. The mystery surrounding his death drew me in, and there are several red herrings to keep readers guessing along the way. The killer is someone who I dismissed as a suspect so their identity came as a complete surprise. The mystery of Lucy’s horse sightings, lights on the beach, and moving model figures is intriguing and fitting for the Halloween theme. Are they are real or imagined? Connor’s mayoral race provides some comic relief (how many teas and luncheons with senior citizens can one person attend?) and allows the romantic subplot to progress a bit.

THE SPOOK IN THE STACKS is delightfully entertaining, and I highly recommend it to cozy readers looking for a tale that is a step above the average cozy. I cannot wait for the next book.

I received a copy of this title from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.

oday I am reviewing a book that I am so grateful to Crooked Lane Books for publishing. The Lighthouse Library Series by Author Eva Gates is one of my most favorite. I have always loved lighthouses and have dreamed of living in one, so when the series came out about a librarian who lived in a lighthouse library I knew this was a book I had to read. I actually bought the series and to see this one picked up and saved by Crooked Lane Books makes my heart soar. In Spook in the Stacks the amazing Library Crew, Book Club and fabulous Mayor are back and it is Halloween. Favorite time of year for me and to read it on one of the hottest days on record here was a welcome reprieve. I was easily transported to the Bodie Island Lighthouse, the fog and the mist, the mystery and a bit of imagination made the words Eva wrote jump of the page with just that much more meaning. I loved this book. The mystery I did not figure out until the big reveal and my heart just was so full when I finished reading it. This is a cozy lovers delight, a lighthouse enthusiasts treat and a very good read!

Digital audiobook narrated by Elise Arsenault

Book number four in the Lighthouse Library Mystery series. Lucy Richardson is the librarian for the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library of the coast of North Carolina. In this episode the Bodie Island Library is vying with a university library for a collection of North Carolina historical documents, when the potential benefactor, a wealthy businessman, is found dead in the library during a Halloween program.

What can I say? It’s a cozy mystery with a leading lady who, despite her completely amateur standing, simply HAS to investigate. Her romantic interest (sorta) is the town’s Mayor, who naturally cautions her to stay out of it. On the other hand, there’s her cat, Charles Dickens, who frequently points Lucy to an important clue. Her main foil, however, is Louise Jane, a young woman who is determined to insinuate herself into library business, as a volunteer if necessary, since they will not put her on the board. Let’s just say that her interests in the paranormal and ghost stories fit perfectly with a Halloween theme.

A fun, fast, enjoyable cozy mystery.

Elise Arsenault does an adequate job of narrating, though the voices she uses for the men are laughably over-the-top.

I don’t think I’ve read enough cozy mystery novels to say if they are my thing or not, but I’m going to say I’m leaning towards no.

The writing was good, albeit a bit repetitive in some parts. I prefer my mysteries a bit more mysterious, and with a bigger accent on the murder. Here it felt like a joke as the attention would be pulled to some other thing.

The main character was okay, Lucy's romance irked me just a bit because she didn’t know what she wanted out of her relationship with Connor. Every other character was okay if we except Theodore. That one infuriated me so much because he was way too pushy, wanting to spend every freaking moment with Julia. And don’t me get started on the untactful way he suggested something he and Julia should do…as if her grandfather hasn’t been murdered.

Lucy Richardson is a librarian at the Bodie House Lighthouse Library. She is a sweet girl who also lives in the lighthouse. When a wealthy man Jay Riddle dies I. The rare books room, Lucy finds herself in the middle of the investigation. When things go bump in the night and there are more suspects than trick or treaters, Lucy finds herself more determined to find out who done it. Can Lucy find the killer before the murder tarnishes the library's good name?

I enjoyed this cozy read. When I read the blurb, I thought ohhh murder and things that go bump in the night. My kind of read. I did enjoy this read. It had the perfect little spooky vibe to it. But it felt a bit flat in some areas. It did not have as much action as I would have expected out of ghostly reads. I also felt that some things that went in bump in the night were not explored enough. I thought that some of those things, if explored more would have added some more excitement to the story.

I did find the characters cute and sweet. I especially loved the cat Charles. He was like a little person. He had such character. Conner and Lucy are a cute couple and I really would love to see their relationship blossom more in the future books. Theodore was a quirky man, who I thought was really sweet. I got a kick out of Louise Jane. She was a perfect storyteller and her little creepy boat. What is it about that boat?

Overall this book is a great cozy read that will keep you guessing till the end. A charming and entertaining read with a fun and wonderful set of characters. Wonder what else is in store for Lucy and the gang.

An entertaining read and fourth book in the lighthouse library series. The library board decided that there would a Halloween display at the lighthouse and would include a number of public events. Lucy Richardson would manage the popular events. Jay Ruddle, a wealthy owner who grew on Bodie Island had not been back for nine years. He or a large collection of historical North Carolina documents and he looking for a home. He had narrow down to two places. The Bodie Island Lighthouse Library one of them. Strange things are taken place on the island. Lucy begins to see a white horse who is not there. Tiny figures move and a miniature ghost ship loan to the library. At ghostly legends a Jay Ruddle is murder. Lucy plans to stay out of the investigation until she makes friends with Jay's daughter. Will Lucy find an answer before she loses her life? I recommend this book.

The Spook in the Stacks by Eva Gates(Vicki Delany)is the fourth book in the Lighthouse Library series and was the most intriguing one to date. I was thrilled when this series found a new home at Crooked Lane Books.

Ms. Gates has penned a fast paced plot with plenty of twists that kept me turning the pages. The characters have become well developed over the last three books; and I felt like I was on vacation visiting with old friends when I started reading this book. Ms. Gates' descriptive writing of the Outer Banks and the North Carolina coastline makes we want to visit each time I read one of these books. The murder turned out to be quite complex and the resolution was very satisfying. I look forward to reading many more in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

(Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Lucy is a strong, smart loving person and she is always ready, willing and able to help her friends when they need it. I found it very funny that Lucy does not really like Halloween and anything scary. She does not think being scared is fun. But she works and lives in a lighthouse that is said to be haunted. I think that is ironic and very humorous. I enjoyed getting to spend time with Lucy and her friends and library “family”. And Connor seems to be a great boyfriend and their relationship is progressing at a normal speed. All of the characters, primary and secondary, added a lot to this book. And Charles is one cool cat.

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and she drew me into the location. I feel like I know more about North Carolina’s Outer Banks. I could picture the area and the lighthouse in my mind as if I visited it in real life. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. It defined the characters very clearly by their actions and dialogue. There are literary references and some history lessons peppered throughout the book that I felt added a lot to the overall enjoyment.

The mystery was well plotted and not an easy one to solve. There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through. There were twists and turns everywhere you turned and I did not see the ending coming.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you like lighthouses, the Outer Banks or Halloween, I think you’ll like this book.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Series: A Lighthouse Library Mystery - Book 4
Author: Eva Gates https://www.lighthouselibrarymysterie...
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Publisher: Crooked Lane Books http://www.crookedlanebooks.com/

Publishing Date June 12, 2018

The Spook in the Stacks is a delightfully fun read that doesn’t require it to be Halloween to enjoy. Lucy is a mild-mannered Librarian whose only real goal is to be happy. Whether that is with the town mayor, Conner or by herself really doesn’t matter. She loves her job and her small apartment high above the lighthouse Library, and she has no intention of leaving either any time soon. Her fur companion, Charles is the perfect library cat, and her protector when she thinks things may not be what they seem to be inside the old Lighthouse.

The characters throughout this book and the series are very well written. They have complexities and habits that are woven into the story seamlessly. They are typical of a small town and yet uniquely different in many ways. Lucy’s boss and the ever-present, Theodore make the story come to life as unknown facets of their life and character are slowly revealed to the reader.

Of course, Nags Head is a beautiful location filled with history and charm. During Halloween, there is any number of ghost stories in the small sleepy town that rival those of locations much older and far more historical. Yet it appears every time a person walks down the sidewalk they trip over a new historical fact or myth. The character of Louise Jane brings all the stories to life at the library for young and old.

The plot is kept in mind throughout the action at all times. There are no deviations along the way from the murder to the solution, and although the solution comes unexpectedly, it is handled with care and heroism. The writing is smooth, clean and filled with enough detail to keep the reader engaged.

I happily recommend The Spook in the Stacks to readers of all age. If you enjoy a fast-paced, original mystery with wonderful characters, lovely locations, and libraries filled with books, you will enjoy this book and series.

I had been hoping this wonderful series would continue and this latest installment set during Halloween at the Bodie Lighthouse Library did not disappoint. Lucy Richardson is the assistant librarian who lives in an apartment atop the lighthouse with her cat, Charles and she is now casually dating the mayor of Nags Head, North Carolina. When native son and millionaire Jay Ruddle visits the library to discuss his interest in donating his valuable collection of Outer Banks historic documents, the entire staff is very excited. But before he can legally effectuate his wishes, he is found murdered in the library after closing. His doting granddaughter, Julia, becomes the main suspect as she appears to be his only heir. But what about his personal assistant and curator to the collection, who would have lost his job if the documents were donated? Could his past business practices or long-ago romantic interest triggered the killer's rage? Lucy and her boss, Bertie also investigate other suspects.

Reading this series is very special because I lived in this area about fifteen years ago and still visit frequently. I used to spend my lunch time sitting at the picnic benches of the lighthouse grounds when I had business in nearby Manteo. Reading is also about imagination and reading a book about Halloween in the spring was a bit of leap but a fun one. I really enjoyed Lucy's continuing character development She stood her ground against everyone trying to harm the reputation of the library and also in her personal relationship with Connor. The mystery itself was well-plotted and I enjoyed the interaction of the various characters. Julia's character also grows from a seemingly meek granddaughter to someone capable of making important decisions which influence her personal and professional life.

I also thought this book did a wonderful job of addressing how libraries play such an important role in our respective communities. In times where many local and state governments are considering reducing or even eliminating library funding, the book highlights the ways libraries are changing with the times and how they are not just buildings but are essential and integral parts of our communities.

It was a delight to once again greet Bodie Island Lighthouse Library Assistant Librarian Lucy Richardson in this 4th book in the Lighthouse Library series. The library is in the running for the historical papers collected by retired businessman Jay Ruddle, until Ruddle is found murdered in the library. Lucy can't help but ask a lot of questions, and both staff and patrons are drawn into the investigation.
Eva Gates has written another warm, entertaining and humorous tale. This reader could seen and feel the mist that creeps up from the shore, and shared Lucy's disquiet at the strange sights that appear in the evening. The Lighthouse Library is a wonderful setting, complete with its own library cat, Charles, who has his own part to play in these stories.
After a long wait between books 3 and 4, I'm hoping the next will be here soon!
This review is based on an ARC received from the publisher.

Another fun read about the library in the lighthouse. Although some of the characters are annoying and a bit redundant fro one book to the next. But it’s still an enjoyable light read.

First I have to say how happy I am that the “Lighthouse Library Mystery” series found a new home. I love this one. OK a library and home in a lighthouse may not be feasible at first glance, but that is why we read books isn’t it. To have the hard or impossible to attain be at our fingertips. The characters in this series are enjoyable and fun. The writing is stellar and lights up the page. “The Spook in the Stacks” is set at Halloween and boy is the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library getting into the spirit. Not only that, but a wealthy businessman that used to live in the area is thinking of donating his collection of North Carolina historical documents to the library. There is competition for that collection though, so who knows what is going to happen.

Librarian and lighthouse librarian Lucy Richardson does not believe in all the hocus pocus, but that does not stop her from enjoying the festivities and reading “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” with her book club. Unfortunately while everyone else is out being entertained by ghost stories, that businessman was in the library being killed. Lucy finds him and is knee deep in the murder mystery before she knows it. She has to get with her other librarians and find clues to who would do away with Jay Ruddle. Especially when he had not stated who would get his collection. At the same time, Lucy is noticing some weird things at the library, her home. Figurines are moving on the scary boat replica in the library and she sees a ghostly horse roaming the grounds. Could her nemesis, Louise Jane be correct, could the library be haunted?

Even though there has been quite a bit of time between books, “The Spook in the Stacks” really stacks up against the first three in this wonderful series. It almost seems to be even better, better writing, better character development and more fun. That is saying a lot since this has always been a super series. The relationships between characters is more in depth in this one. I love Lucy and her friends and her boyfriend Connor is realistic as well. Even if you did not read the other three, you can read this as a standalone, but go back and read the others. They are definitely worth the time. The mystery and side stories are entertaining and very intriguing. I am so happy to read the 4th installment in this fun series. Could not be happier that it is finally continuing.

I recommend this super read to any reader that enjoys a well written cozy mystery, with well developed and for the most part realistic characters. You can read it out of order or as a standalone. I do suggest you read the other books in this series as they are all wonderful. Author Eva Gates knows how to tell a page turning story even better than her character Louise Jane. This book pulls you in from the start and never lets you go.

I was given a copy by the author/publisher. The opinion is completely my own.

The Spook In The Stacks is the fourth book in the A Lighthouse Library Mystery series.

I was very disappointed when I heard the series had been canceled by its previous publisher, but I am now elated that a new publisher has been found.

Halloween is quickly coming and most of the Brodie Island employees are not looking forward to overly decorating for the holiday. The children’s area will be tastefully decorated for the young ghosts and goblins. Louise Jane has convinced the other members of the library board that a very detailed replica of the Rebecca MacPherson, a ship that had sunk off the coast of Nags Head and there are some who claim that the ship is haunted.

As the final touches are being put on the decorations, a Jay Ruddle, along with his granddaughter, Julia and Greg Summers, Jay's assistant, and curator. Jay has a very extensive collection of Outer Banks and nautical documents, map and captain’s logs. He has returned to the Nags Head to find a site that will display his collection for future generations to and enjoy. While library patrons are listening to Louis Jane’s presentations, Jay Ruddle goes to the Rare Items area to look over their collection. When the program is over and Julia is ready to leave, Lucy, the assistant librarian, goes up to get Jay and finds him with a blue velvet rope wrapped. Also in his hand is a necklace that Lucy had seen on Julia.

Julia immediately becomes the prime suspect based on Jay holding her necklace in his hand. But a patron of the library, Theodore, who is infatuated with Julia to do a little sleuthing and find out who killed Jay.

In addition to the library, Jay has also been in contact with Blacklock College. After Jay’s death, Norman Hoskins and Elizabeth McArthur visit the library and ask that the library withdraws from consideration, late they off money to withdraw. Something about the pair causes Lucy to wonder how far they would go to get the collection. Lucy also needs to look at library board member, Curtis Gardner whose furniture was severely hurt by Jay’s price-cutting policy. Lucy also wants to check out Greg, as he seems to be not being honest about the job he claims to have lined up and he seems to be overly attentive to Julia but isn’t being returned by her.

Another exciting story in this interesting series. The author provides an interesting and believable cast of character. Lucy and Connor’s romance is still on an even keel.

I’m looking forward to the next book to see what adventures Lucy will get up to.

Halloween is fast approaching. The Bodie
Island Lighthouse Library in the Outer
Banks is decorating plus getting ready for
the spooky day.
Lucy Richardson, the assistant librarian
has her book group reading The Legend
of Sleepy Hallow. The children librarian
has planned stories and costume parties
for his group of children. Louise Jane has
a Ghost Story Lecture Series being
presented.
A collection of North Carolina historical
documents owned by prominent collector,
Jay Riddle is considering donating these
to the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library.
He, his granddaughter and private curator
have come to tour the Lighthouse Library.
Jay is especially interested in the rare
books and documents section.
While his granddaughter and curator
attend an outside event of ghost stories,
Jay requests to go into the rare books
section.
Lucy discovers Jay there...dead...murdered!!
Who would want to kill Jay Riddle?? When
Lucy starts her own investigation, she
discovers he did not make many friends so
she has a lot of viable suspects. She is
determined to bring the culprit to justice.
After Jay’s death strange phenomenons
occur inside and outside the lighthouse.
Lucy experiences flickering light, a model
ship with inanimate captain, cat and sailors
seem to move around on their own. The
most puzzling is the ghostly horse Lucy
sees through the fog. Is the area haunted?
I enjoyed this book....I love the Outer Banks
and all the stories revolving around them...
I love lighthouses and collect lighthouse
memorabilia. The characters are very well
created. Charles, the cat who is essential
to aiding Lucy in identify the culprit lives
in the lighthouse. He stays in the room
where Lucy lives inside the lighthouse at
night and roams the library during the
day. Charles adds to the story.
There is even a hint of a serious romance
beginning.
This is book # 4 in the Lighthouse Library
Mysteries series. It can be read as a stand
alone.

The Spook in the Stacks has my dream setting – a library in a lighthouse that the main character lives in. Sign me up for that job, please!

Lucy is a relatable heroine who loves her job and also can’t help but investigate crimes in their small Outer Banks town. She has a bevy of engaging secondary characters to team up with, including the library’s resident cat Charlie who seems to have a knack for crime solving too. Gates does a great job of creating realistic characters without losing the quirkiness common to cozy mysteries – or without making the quirkiness go over the top.

At first I thought the whodunnit was completely obvious. And, with 2 hours left in my reading time, I briefly wondered how much the author could possibly draw this out enough to keep my interest. Well…. silly me. The who that dunnit was not at all the one I just knew it was lol. I’m in a bit of a losing streak lately when it comes to these things which in this case is a good thing because it means the plots lately have been really well constructed.

Bottom Line: The Spook in the Stacks by Eva Gates is enjoyable and entertaining with a fun cast of characters and a to-die-for setting (quite literally for our poor murder victim). A well-done mystery and several interesting subplots – including a bit of paranormal possibilities – will keep your attention from start to finish!

(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)

I am so happy that this series was able to continue!! What is not to love about a library in a lighthouse???? Two of my favorite things water and books. This volume, the fourth, takes place around Halloween, I will admit, not my favorite holiday, but this was a very good mystery and not too over the top with the spooky for me, so I enjoyed it. I think what consistently draws me to this series is Lucy, the main character, and Charles of course, the library cat who shares Lucy's digs on the fourth floor of the lighthouse! Lucy's character is very real, she left Boston, a family she loves but is a little stuffy, and an arranged marriage to come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where she has a cousin she is close to and her Aunt and Uncle. She has been able to expand her circle with her library family, some friends her own age and she is dating the Mayor. What I like about Lucy is her feelings are real, not always positive, she has self doubts about relationship and family, and what she's seeing around the lighthouse at Halloween, but she approaches them with a good brain, common sense and a determination to get to the bottom of who killed their potential donor. You will not be sorry you spent time with this book!!!!!!
