Life Upside Down

Rate this book
Life Upside Down is a romantic life story with a comedic twist.
You just never know who is going to catch your fancy, and either did Erin.
* I always thought the love of my life would come in the form of a marble cut man hard as stone. A strong muscular body, a perfect chin chiseled by the gods, and with the wit of a master strategist. I would have never guessed ‘his’ name would be Rose. *

Life Upside Down is a novelette of 16,300 words. The story is very uneven. The first half (somewhere up to around the 64 percent mark) is pretty good. It is about a fast paced budding romantic relationship between two coworkers, Erin and Rose. The point of view is exclusively Erin's except for one single short chapter which is Rose's. A very unusual choice. But nevertheless I thought, so far so good. And then suddenly, The whole middle part goes missing! And not just that, but it feels as if another writer takes over. The characters start to act very unnaturally, the plot becomes deflated and abandons all the good things from the first part, the conflict becomes ridiculous. And then the story just ends. Very disappointingly uneven distribution. It would be much better if the story ended at the first part. Much better.
My recommendation to the author is to fill out the middle of the story, and rewrite the second part. This story definitely has potential, but needs work to get there. Smartly done rewriting and editing can really make it shine. Without that it is barely okay.

Life Upside Down

This was sent to me for review by the author. I was skeptical about it as if it couldn’t be that good of a story. I can honestly say that it’s a good story and a very quick read.

Let’s get the negative out of the way first and that is the pacing and the lack of content. I wish that the story was longer. I also wish that it wasn’t as rushed as it was. It went from existential crisis, to girl crush, to first same-sex kiss, glossed over first time, to marriage, pregnancy and end. So much detail was lost in between, but I sort of understand where the author is coming from.

Next:

I enjoy the switch from character to character. Alternating between Erin and Rose. Getting both perspectives . There isn’t any wondering as to what the other might be thinking as you can read it for your self. I wish that the author had kept with that aspect throughout this novella. This is a simple love story, that most of us think about, wonder about and/or have lost the chance at trying because we were too wrapped up in failing.

It’s not just quick love story. It’s one about being patient and being open as you may never know what could happen when you let yourself dream and live. That while you are waiting for Prince Charming, life and your heart has someone else in mind. Love comes in different shapes and forms and once people acknowledge that, everything in relations to love will work itself out.

I was invested into Erin and Rose’s story from the get go. If this is an indication of this author’s next stories and what she/they may have in store, I can’t wait. Hopefully this turns into a series that goes more in depth.

This is 3.5 out 5 for me.

Lacking

Storyline was ok, but lacking in detail and character development. Seemed to have skipped from first date to getting pregnant, then the end. Don't know about anyone else, but I need a a whole lot more than that to make it a memorable read. Needed lots of editing too.

This book caught my attention because of the cover. Right away, I thought it was funny. It had me laughing within seconds. The story of Erin and Rose really spoke to me. I don't want to give too much away but I loved watching their relationship open up as they discovered each other. The story is fast paced (which I like) and shows just how quickly two people can fall in love. I hope their story (Erin and Rose) continues. I would really like to see what happens with them.

Five stars... I absolutely loved this book.

I started out liking the style of story telling and then it just seemed to lose its way. I felt cheated as there was this huge gap in the story. I would have liked more of the budding relationship, perhaps the second half could have been book two. It had potential but fell short. I would be interested to read more from this author as she has an interesting style and the idea was good. Needs a rewrite.

Not my usual genre but it truly is a love story with some interesting character surprises. Following the relationship between these two is sweet and reading their struggles made it interesting. And there IS a cast of “characters”! Quick read but good story.
