Cocky. Player. Ready to score. Theo Montgomery is Carlton University's most promising student athlete – and it’s biggest player. Confident, charming, and handsome as sin, there isn’t a single girl on campus who is immune to this quarterback. Except Allie. Smart. Sassy. Not interested. Allie Perez can’t stand jocks. Especially the spoiled, cocky, womanizing types like Theo. She could have gone her entire college career without ever seeing his smarmy smile again. Except…they’ve been paired together for a major class project. The solution seems simple: set their differences aside for the sake of their grades. Until one bet changes everything. She thinks he's the last guy she should fall for. He's determined to change her mind. What happens when the one person you hate becomes the one person you can't live without?
An enemies to lovers romance filled with heat, snark, and a dash of football.
Natalie can't sing. Or dance. Or play an instrument. She can't ride a bike and doesn't know how to swim or drive. As a result, her husband often asks if she's from another planet (the answer, in case you were wondering, is no). When she's not geeking out at her day job, Natalie can be found baking ridiculously chewy chocolate chip cookies and watching so-bad-it's-good reality television shows.
Overall Opinion: This was better than I thought it'd be, and was just what I was in the mood for. I was looking for a light, sexy, college athlete and dorky girl story. I really enjoyed their banter! Did it get deep and meaningful? No. Is it going to be one that goes on my favorites shelf and will be memorable in the long run? No. BUT I did enjoy myself reading it.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Allie and Theo's story. They've known each other for years, but always butted heads. Even though they have not been around each other for the past few years, they are suddenly paired up for a semester in a class. They end up forming a friendship of sorts after making a bet with each other, and stronger feelings start to develop the more they spend time together. There are some outside influences that cause some troubles for them, some hot sexy times...and they get a HFN ending.
POV: This alternated between Allie and Theo's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.
Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings (and they've known each other for years prior to the story).
H rating: 4 stars. Theo. I liked him. I really appreciated how he came to care for the h.
h rating: 4 stars. Allie. I liked her. She was hard working, level-headed, witty, and she didn't let the H get away with stuff.
Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed
Push/Pull: Yes
Heat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.
Descriptive sex: Yes
OW/OM drama: Yes
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: No
Separation: Yes
Possible Triggers: Yes
Closure: This had alright closure with what I would call a HFN ending. Other readers might be fine in calling this a HEA .
Safety: This one is probably either Safe with exception or Not safe for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences.
Couple that dresses up as DRACO MALFOY and HERMIONE GRANGER together, stays together Also: if you're a Dramione stan and stay till the epilogue, there's some cuteness overload awaiting you
The book was so great, I don't even know what else to tell ya. The banter was SUPERB (I really should start a shelf for top-tier banterpalooza), the heroes both likable, the story cliched, but so greatly executed. I legit stayed up till 3:30 in the morning and battled my 'beauty-sleep' to read this book 👌🤣 And I've got bags under my eyes to prove it!
The ONLY THING that upsets me, is the third act breakup. Don't get me wrong, I saw it coming a mile away, but I was hoping against all hope, the author wouldn't go there. Alas, she did 😥😬 It was kind of logical, but could've easily been avoided, so...one star down.
Bonus points for them binge-watching "Friday Night Lights" 👏🙌
this is one of the only books in which the mmc is a player, whom i could actually handle and like. i love him and i love allie sm. i enjoyed every moment of their banter and tension. i smiled out loud and groaned a few times because when is it my turn? WHEN? i used to dislike players in books (not all though and idk why) but i think i’m changing my mind. anyways, if you love a good obsessed player, he falls first, college, sports romance, read this pronto
Deportista Engreído? Chica nerd? Odio a primera vista? Todo lo que me gusta, qué puedo decir. Le quito puntos porque lo sentí un poco lento al principio y porque el drama se veía venir de lejos. Adoré las discusiones entre Allie y Theo.
Really enjoyed it! The heroine has a brief annoying phase where she’d literally run away from the hero... ah YA, but otherwise I couldn’t put it down. I especially loved that the story doesn’t stop suddenly as soon as they get together. We get to see them as a couple navigating life etc. No cheating and a sweet HEA. Perfect!
Nice read. It was quite entertaing and very light. I didn't connect too much with the characters though and sometimes I lost interest in the story. But all in all was a cute read, I liked it.
QUICK REVIEW:
Enjoyment: 3/5 Writing style: 4/5 Storyline: 3/5 Hero: 3/5 Heroine: 3/5 Secondary characters: 2/5 Hotness/chemistry: 3/5 Romance: 3/5 Angst: 1/5 Drama level: 0/5 Humor level: 2/5 Depth of the book: 1/5 POV: dual, 1st person
Theo and Allie are seriously the BEST! Theo’s need to infuriate Allie and her need to be sassy make them so damn cute! They each misunderstood one another and when they finally gave in to friendship they found out that what each needed was the live the other had to give!
3.5- I loved Theo and Allie. They were both hilarious and their friendship was so adorable. I loved the transition into friends then a relationship. Everything flowed perfectly. I've never read anything from this author so I'm curious to see if there will be any other books about the secondary characters. Its rare that I love a book and can't wait to see if there are other books. It's usually I love the MCs and could care less about the others or I love the secondary characters more than the main characters. Anyway, I would definitely recommend.
A plot of college quarterback and nerdy girl. It's been done. I've read many but this is well done.
Theo and Ally make very fun adversaries. I enjoyed how their banter played out.
When Ally ended up having trouble with Theo, I really enjoyed the author working through Ally's thought process to the layers of the problem (cause she believed him) and then used communication to solve problem.
I loved this book. So much banter-y fun and crazy chemistry vibes, so well done. I've been hearing about this book from a fave author so I had to check it out. Turns out she's right it was really enjoyable and a fun NA read. I was vastly entertained. It had the right feels too. Football quarterback cocky arrogant and a sassy girl his total opposite. The playful banter and bickering to realizing they didn't really know each other. Despite being in the same prep school.
It grew rather organically and easily from jokes and teasing to more. I like how Allie did not succumb to Theo's charms right away. After all he is a known player and proud of it, his whole reputation back fires when he finally wants her to like him. Thr author showed that well the change in Theo and he sort of grew up. Very modern day Pride & Prejudice sorta with a football player and smart sassy med student.
A reason I'm so amused with this is the the banter. So much fun. Riling and joking, innuendo and all the good stuff. I like. I'm a fan Natalie Rios.
I really enjoyed this book. It has everything I love in these kinds of books. I found it in some Facebook group where it said it was similar to The Deal by Elle Kennedy. Say no more, The Deal is one of my favorite books (I reread this series multiple times) so I immediately started reading it.
But, there is a big BUT....
I found it too similar to Elle Kennedys books, not just the plot, situations, and characters, but the same sentences as in her books. That's the thing I really didn't like. I feel like this was inspired by first three books in Off Campus series a little bit too much.
I would give it a 5 star review if it was a little bit more original.
The banter between Theo and Allie had me laughing so hard! She had such sass and I loved the way she wouldn't put up with any of his crap lol! Theo's cocky attitude was just second nature but deep down he was such a great guy. I went into this book as a reading suggestion and had no idea what it was about. But I'm so happy that I did ! It was hilarious and sexy and definitely a page turner! This is the first book I have read from this author and it most definitely will not be the last . I loved her writing style and all of the characters had me devouring this book!
What a way to read in the new year!!! Take one lovable and sassy heroine, add in a cocky yet sweet quarterback, and tons of hilarious banter, stir and Voilà…. you have The Player. This was an absolute hilariously sweet and sexy read. I couldn’t get enough and ended up inhaling it in one sitting.
If you’re a fan of Sara Ney’s D-Bag or Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series and need something to scratch that itch, you just might want to give The Player a try!
"Admit it," he whispers. "Admit what?" "I am totally killing this boyfriend shit."
3.5 stars
My first read of 2018 and it was a hella cute one! There are a lot of clichés, especially in the beginning (the run-in, a shared class, study partners etc.), and the story isn't anything special, but the characters were nice, their banter super fun, the hero sweet at times, and the sexual chemistry was high. I also loved the references to Friday Night Lights (a very underrated tv show!) and Harry Potter. Despite what the rating might suggest, I really enjoyed this book, especially the second half.
I saw some foreshadowing for Levi and Camilla and I'm definitely interested!
--------------- POV: 1st person (dual) story: 3 writing: 4 characters: h: 4 H: 4, secondary characters: 4 couple/romance: 4 instalove? No. steam: High. Hot sexual tension and some nice sex scenes. angst: Moderate. enjoyment: 4 ending:
The writing was really good. IMO storyline has been done before and this was a bit dragged out but overall I still enjoyed reading it and would read more by this author.
I'm a sucker for a college sports romance. This one really hit the spot! Misunderstood super sweet jock, and the nerdy but sassy and witty loner. Sign me up!
There's nothing I hate worse than when a couple has a communication misunderstand that leads to conflict lasting 50% of the book. Where one just doesn't believe the other and refuses to ask them about it. I appreciated in this story that Allie did believed Theo when they had an issue but just needed time to sort her feelings about dating a famous athlete. Their conflict was realistic and resolved in a mature way. She immediately went to him, and heard what he had to say, but informed him she needed some time to think. Perfect.
Theo's commitment to the things Allie loves was so freaking swoon-worthy. Being a fan of FNL, I loved that he would comment on the episodes and quote the show.
Honestly this book did not exactly start so well for me. I had mixed feelings about it. The slut-shaming was just what everyone expects from a NA book, but it still bothered me, especially because most of it came from the female protagonist. I mean, c'mon sis, you're supposed to be the one that knows what women go through! But at the same time, the banter between the protagonists was SO GOOD that it balanced it out. Then.... she saw his dick and that's when it went downhill for me again bc there was like an entire page dedicated to how HUGE it was... like are you kidding me??? Does every NA male protagonist have to have a way-bigger-than-normal dick??? If it's average-size it would not qualify for a protagonist, right? Ridiculous.
I'm not surprised with this, it's just... look the fact that you're writing a NA book doesn't mean you have to include the same exact traits as every other NA romance book ever!!
ANYWAYS, the GOOD thing is that it actually won me over by half of it?? With all that relationship development and transition from haters to friends to lovers??? That was really well developed and I couldn't help to get into this couple in the end. The way they fell in love with each other felt pretty believable because of all of that, and even though the resolution to the drama at the end was a bit cheesy, I still enjoyed it.
Also, it feels like there would be more books to come, with this becoming a series, but there's like no sign of it here other than a novella that comes before this book?? I need to know if the hints this book gave about (probably) Camilla and Levi is really going to be a thing.
This book has me wanting to dance around singing Rita Ora's Your Song. (Then add some SoMo and Beyonce into the playlist). The sexy fun banter is really entertaining. I just had to devour the book from start to finish.
This was my first Natalie Rios book, and not only will this be added to my fav books list, but I'm getting ready to crack open another one her books just to feed my new addiction to her writing style. I wish this was a series so I could get more of Theo and Allie! The multi-perspective (which was written equally well on both sides) allowed me to understand both of them better and made me feel more connected to each of them as the story progressed.
*****
Theo Montgomery is the cocky charming quarterback that has all the girls at Carlton University drooling. The biggest player on and off the field, Theo doesn't have to do anything for women to throw themselves at him. Promising future in the NFL, they all want a piece of him, except Allie.
Allie has hated Theo since high school. Thankfully she was able to avoid him throughout college, until they both happen to be class partners senior year. He hasn't changed, he's still full of himself and gets everything handed to him. But all of a sudden he's everywhere. Class, the library, even the a party or two which is a rare occasion for her busy schedule. She's used to having to work hard for everything. She needed to stay focused, get the grades, make enough to cover the rent and have enough left over for med school applications. So Theo being around all the time, is becoming a major distraction. No matter how snarky or sharp of tongue, it seems to just entice him more.
Allie is a feisty thing with a witty mouth and dirty mind so it doesn't take Theo long to realize she could be the one women worth changing his ways for. He's never had to work for a women's attention, and Allie is putting him through the ringer. But when the bet gets put into place, the once aggressive banter becomes a fun sexual tension that neither understands. They each thought they knew the other but over the past couple of weeks, they are seeing each other in a new light. They are getting closer but what happens after the time is up and the bet is over? Allie can't help but think about whether their new found friendship will hold up and she's reluctant to believe the spark set off by one kiss could mean anything more to a guy like Theo. Theo on the other hand is willing to do whatever it takes to prove her wrong.
"'So...I guess this means we’re friends now?” And I’m full on grinning like a fool now. I’ve officially been upgraded from the Fuck Off Zone to the Friend Zone. Progress is progress."
Swoon.... "Look, I know I'm not a good bet. I don’t know anything about relationships. I've never had a girlfriend, never been on a date, and I'm probably going to fuck this up six ways from Sunday, but I want to try. For the first time in my life, I want to try.”
Hilarious Lines:
"He’s short, soft-looking, and a ginger for Christ’s sake. Imagine if your friend told you he knew an excellent place to score... He gives you the address and when you get there, Ed motherfucking Sheeran opens the door."
“Sure, Perez. But be sure to mark your calendar. Thirty days from today you’re going to kiss me and the only Britney lyric you’ll be singing is Gimme More.” Choking on a laugh... “Game on, Theodore.”
"Now, Batman, he’s dark and twisty. A vigilante without super powers.” “He’s also a playboy billionaire. Which is exactly what you claim to hate about me.” “No, he only plays the part of the superficial playboy. To avert suspicion. You, on the other hand, just like getting pussy.” I choke on a laugh."
"Allie: My apologies. I assumed a Casanova such as you never gets the brush off therefore I didn’t have to bring my A-game. Me: I always want your A-game, Perez. Allie: I g2g, the cock waiting for me in the other room isn’t going to suck itself...Me: Um, WTF? TMI. Allie: You asked for my A-game ;-) Holy shit. This girl’s a total fucking smartass."
“'You know, that wasn’t a no. To my offer,” I clarify. “It wasn’t a yes either. Though it might have been if you had said ravish that pussy instead.” Christ. This girl. I have to wipe the grin off my face."
The first thing that crossed my mind when I got to the end is "I just finished the most wonderful story!"
The book is awesome! The story itself is nothing ultra original but the characters and the writing was more than enough to make up for it!
I was truly entertained!
Ps. I can't believe that I stumbled again on the author who is obviously a fan of Harry Potter! 😀
Pss. I can't believe that in real Harry Potter Hermione ended up with Ron!!! Wtf?! No wonder SenLinYu decided to write fan fiction book just to correct it 😀
