A Pinx Video Mystery #2

Hidden Treasures

Rate this book
It’s about a dress. A valuable blue sequined dress worn by a famed actress in a film from the 1940s. For some reason everyone thinks video storeowner Noah Valentine has it. Which might not be a big deal except that it’s connected to the murder of a prominent Hollywood costumer.

In the second of the Pinx Video Mysteries, Noah attempts to solve the mystery of the dress. To do so, he must confront a legendary film icon Wilma Wanderly, hunky police Detective Javier O’Shea, the dowager Queen of Watts and a couple of bitter ex-friends.

4.5 stars So good... So so good. Another series to swoon over.

I had really missed these types of stories. So happy I decided to give this series a try.

Noah Valentine our amatuer sleuth and his friends are back again, this time investigating some hidden treasures.

Gaaah! This series is amazing. I love that Marshall writes about the everyday guy. No six packs-swooning-greek gods- chiselled jaw-dick twitching guys here. Just your average Joes who are gossipy, blunt and nosy. I love all of them, except Judith, she can go to purgatory.

The writing is soooo good and the mystery enganging. I was glued from the first word.

New York, New York was even more crowded than usual. In preparation for the upcoming Gay Pride, they’d decorated the narrow, Big Apple-themed bar with balloons in rainbow colors and a gigantic rainbow flag tacked up on the ceiling.
They never bothered with a DJ, so the music tended toward the top one hundred pop tunes the jukebox provided. Mariah Carey was singing “I’ll Be There” when we walked in. Louis volunteered to fight his way to the bar, while the rest of us stubbornly tried to stake a claim to about four square feet of floor space.

As for O’Shea...... I can't freaking waaaaait!!!

I've really grown to love the characters. And I mean of all them, not just Noah. It's unusual for me to have such a big set of basically 4 main characters (Marc and Louis, the house hunting couple living in the apartment below Noah, and Leon who has a tendency to run off with handsome strangers...).

The crime case wasn't the most thrilling one, though. A blue sequined dress is the cause of several murders in the close proximity of video rental shop owner Noah Valentine.

An aging actress is trying to obtain the long lost dress, which she wore in one of her classic films and allegedly Noah's late partner Jeffer owned the dress at the time of his death.

He just never told Noah about it. And while people are dying because of that dress, Noah has no idea where it might be hidden.

Tall, dark and handsome Detective Javier O'Shea is again investigating the murders, but his interest lies largely in quiet and withdrawn Noah who is harboring a secret of his own and keeps the people around him at a distance.

And damn, when O'Shea, shirtless and glistening in the sun, finds Noah in the crowd at the gay parade and kisses him, I wanted to yell at Noah for the way he kept shooting the guy down.

But Noah just doesn't see a way to be with the handsome cop.

It's a very tragic constellation and wow, I am desperate to see how this works out and how Javier will react.

BECAUSE I do hope this gets out in the open and discussed at some point. The constant back and forth between Javier and Noah is getting a bit tiring. Javier is interested in Noah and deserves to know. And Noah needs clarity about where he stands with Javier.

Of course, this series is not a romance, judging from what I've seen so far. So I'm not keeping my hopes up too much.

Also... Jesus... it shouldn't take a dead body again and again for Noah to get in contact with Javier.

4.5 stars!

A mysterious memorabilia collection, lies and videotape.

But it is not everything. Add three dead bodies, a good-looking gayby detective (I learned it is someone who's just coming out), an absolutely fantastic sense of time ( the full presence of the 1990s) and a LOT of movies from that time that will awaken feelings of nostalgia.

Our old acquaintance from the first book Noah Valentine, an owner of a video store, is very surprised when his late lover's sister suddenly invites him for lunch - we know from the first book that Jeffer's family didn't treat him well after Jeffer's death. But Noah is a)a nice person (maybe they want to apologize?), and b)he is curious (why now and why him?).
The conversation with Judith makes everything more complicated. No, of course she is not going to apologize for anything, but comes straight to business: She believes that Noah is in possess of Jeffer's valuable collection of memorabilia of which existence Noah actually has no clue. She offers him ten thousand dollars if he'll find the lost collection, and Noah desperately needs money for his upgraded health insurance.

But it is not a COLLECTION, it is the dress. A blue dress. From a very old movie from the 1940s. But it looks like Noah is not the only one who wants to find it, and those other people are not nice like Noah, just the opposite. This case IS DANGEROUS, and...complicated. It is not THAT easy to find this hidden treasure. But Noah has a great team (his close neighbors, best neighbors ever!) and...surprise-surprise! Charming Detective O'Shea whom we also met in the first book and who has a great talent to appear at the right time at the right place.

This new series by Marshall Thornton is totally different from his Boystown series, though I'd say that Detective O'Shea reminds me a lot of Nick.
In spite of some serious topic - Noah is HIV positive and goes through a tough phase in his life right now - this book is full of life and hope.
It is a fine example of a cozy mystery, a sub-genre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously. It is a genre where the author feels most comfortable. The second book in the series, as well as the first one, is written with typical Marshall Thornton's humor and gentle wisdom.

I'm enjoying this new series by the author, but I'm personally not a big fan of amateur detectives.
Nevertheless I'm curious what our hobby sleuth will investigate the next and how their relationship to a police force will develop. It is a lot yet to tell here.

Very recommended.

Hidden Treasures takes place a few months after Night Drop in which we met Noah Valentine, the owner of Pinx Video, his neighbors Marc and Louis, their friend Leon, and of course Mr. Tall, Dark and Delicious - Detective Javier O'Shea (whom Noah runs into at Pride):
... found myself looking at the most gorgeous man I’d seen in a long time. He wore a pair of work boots with white socks, cutoffs and a tank top stuffed in his back pocket. His skin was brown and glistening. I didn’t even have to get near him to know he smelled of coconuts and lazy afternoons. I looked up into his caramel-colored eyes and said, “Crap.”

“Hello, Noah.”

“Detective O’Shea.”
This time around the mystery involves a highly sought-after vintage 1940's dress ... and a few murders. I have to admit personally that the murder / mystery didn't grab my attention as thoroughly as the first book, but I absolutely love the interaction between the main characters and the oh, so slowly (maybe) developing attraction between Detective O'Shea and Noah.

I especially love getting to know Noah better.

I highly recommend Hidden Treasures, can't wait for the next book, and hope Pinx Video Mystery series will have at least as many books as Thornton's fabulous Boystown Mysteries series! 4.5 stars.

I wasn't particularly fond of the first book in this series and pretty much decided early on that Night Drop was going to be both the first and last book I'd read of that series. But then, the last chapter happened and I just couldn't wait to know more. I needed to know more. So I was a happy little reader when Hidden Treasures arrived in my waiting hands.

And what can I say more than; I loved it! I was hooked to this book from the very beginning and enjoyed every page of it. I do believe that this book could work as a standalone, but you'd miss out on some of the details from the first book and I don't think it will be as engaging as it was. You need that background, but you don't need it to be able to follow the story, it will only add more depth and meaning to it.

Noah still struggles with everything going on in his life and the last thing he needs is to solve another mystery, let alone a murder. But then, when has things ever gone his way? Especially since he practically has a line of people demanding to sell them a dress he’s never seen. One they claim he has in his possession.

So far this series is not a romance story. Sure there is an interest there, but there are circumstances that prevents that interest to become more than wishful thinking. And by that, I don’t mean there shouldn’t be something building in the future, just that Noah is so far from anywhere near being ready that it’s not even on the map. That’s why there shouldn’t be anything more, at least not yet, it really wouldn’t fit. So no sexy times anywhere near these books (so if you’re looking for something hot and heavy, you are out of luck), they are more of a whodunit type of books. And I find them very refreshing.

I loved that we got to know Noah a bit more, and I just loved the fact that he was engaging the world again. He's far from a socialite, mind you, but he's a bit more present if you know what I mean. It was nice to see him opening up more to his friends, but also dealing with his past. He still has a long way to go, but he is moving forward and you can see the possibilities opening up before him. As for the mystery part of it all, I really enjoyed it. There were some twists and turns, many possible suspects and as many motives and hidden agendas. Who would've thought that one blue dress could cause so much trouble?

Hidden Treasures is very well written with engaging characters and interesting plot. But what’s more is that they have the feel of a cozy mystery but with a hefty dose of reality of it. They are incredibly atmospheric, they will take you back to the early 90's and everything that entails. You feel that atmosphere, almost taste it. Hidden among these pages is a tiny piece of time machine taking you back to the 90's, a place where you might just get asked if you want lube with your video rentals.

I can't wait to find out more about these characters, it will be interesting to know how the gang manages to find themselves in the middle of trouble next time. But now I’m going on another nostalgic trip; I’m going to dig out my old video tape of The Addams Family and have a nice walk on memory lane.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Hidden Treasures in the second installment in Marshall Thornton’s Pinx Video Mystery series. It must be said that it’s best if you read these in order beginning with the first, Night Drop. It must also go without saying that one must suspend some disbelief when indulging in this series. Set up as a historical due to the time frame, there is also the idea that four run of the mill guys happen to be aces at solving murders. But if you can let that go and indulge in the fun that Thornton creates in his mystery series, then I think you will find them very entertaining. I know I do.

The nearly non-existent slow burn romance that has begun between Detective O’Shea and Noah is just lovely. But Noah’s secret is going to prevent him from diving head first into any relationship and most definitely not one with a newly out and carefully proud Javier O’Shea. One must remember this is only 1992 and while these men do live in Los Angeles, there is still a price to pay for being gay, particularly if you are a cop. Also, Noah has been badly hurt by his deceased boyfriend, Jeffer, whose lies left behind more than just tears and remorse for Noah to handle. But Javier is most assuredly persistent and Noah, despite his resolve, is lonely. I cannot wait to see the next step in this not quite there relationship.

So I just found out this is part of a very slow burn romance that doesn't end any time soon. And I hate incomplete serieses... series... While following the exploits of amateur sleuth Noah Valentine is highly entertaining, I am not ready to be strung along the off for now on much later romance between Javier and Noah. I'm pausing this series until there's a conclusion. Much like I should have the How to Bang a Billionaire series. These books with heavy emotional punches need to come with a warning. Don't read until conclusion of series.

I'm not a big fan of mysteries, especially mysteries solved by "everyday" people, yet here we are. I'm not a fan of slow-burn romances, yet here we are. This mystery series includes the slowest of all the slow-burn romances in the universe, and I just love it to pieces.

Anybody else feeling a little old, given the idea that the "historical" setting for these books is 1992? No? Just me? Lol.

OMG, is it possible I loved Hidden Treasures better than the first Pinx Mystery? I adore MC Noah Valentine. Thornton writes him with equal parts grit and goof. We learn so much more about how Noah is navigating late 80's Los Angeles with his new friends and another murder. In between a cozy murder mystery, we find Noah grappling with real world trauma making the Pinx Mysteries fun and complicated in a delicious way. Thanks Marshall. I can't wait to read your next book.

Audiobook review

4,5 stars

I can’t tell you how much I love being spoiled as a listener. And by spoiled I mean getting multiple releases of a beloved series in just a few months. And here we are, a few short months after the release of Night Drop, this book also made its way into audio and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve read each book as it was published and I feel this is one of these series that really grows on you. Even sneaks up on you until one day you realise you’ve become just a tiiny bit obsessed.

In Hidden Treasures we get to know Noah better, we see him opening up and slowly start engaging with his friends in a way that he hasn’t for a long time. It was nice to see him take those steps forward, opening up. But of course with his luck, his friends also dragged him into another murder mystery, this time of a Hollywood costumer with ties to his former lover. A former lover who supposedly also had a valuable dress in his possession. A dress that more than a few people would sell their souls to get their hands on. Too bad that Noah knew nothing about said dress…

These books aren’t about romance, sure it’s there in the background with his friends, but not really for Noah. He’s not ready, even if he might be interested in a certain someone. After everything that happened with his ex, and the consequences he was still coming to terms with I completely understands him, I can’t even begin to imagine the emotional toll it would take to be betrayed in that kind of way by someone who supposedly loved you.

So romance is out. But what we do get an abundance of is friendships, with a dash of murder mystery wrapped in some family drama. This series makes me nostalgic for a few reasons; I do remember watching the Addams Family as a kid on VHS – still have that copy as a matter of fact and might just dig it up to take a trip down memory lane. (I never did manage that last time I read this book)

Another thing that I really miss is the way of life back then. It was slower and for the most part you dealt with the here and now. You were present, lounged around for hours and hours, talking and what not. There were no social media, the constant updates or having to be “on” all the time. I can honestly say that I miss it a bit. Jack Meloche narrated this book very nicely. I loved every minute spent listening to it and I think he captured the essence of the time and place as well as the characters.

I’m head over heels for this series and I can’t wait for more books – of any kind. Highly recommended.

A good follow-up to the first book. Yet again Noah is drawn into a murder investigation. I had picked the murderer early on but still enjoyed the story. Loved all the personalities that the author was able to make come alive with his use of words. Wish that Noah could tell Javier the reason why he gives the cold shoulder but back then HIV was a very dirty word and considered a sure death sentence by those that didn't understand.

So much to love about Noah, his friends, the sexy detective he’s trying to deny his attraction to, and his mom who is trying so hard. The mystery was excellently paced and intriguing. As predicted, these characters just keep burrowing deeper into my heart. Excited for book three.

TL;DR 4.5 rounded down because the ending felt a bit rushed.

Very enjoyable second installment in the Pinx series. I really like these characters and the development from book 1 to 2. The mystery here didn't quite measure up to the first one for me. It was going well, but the denouement was bit more melodramatic than I was expecting, which isn't bad, I just wasn't expecting it. But it was more that it felt a bit abrupt, like Thornton looked at the page count and said oh, time to wrap things up. And I would have liked a bit more follow up / explanation of a few specific details afterwards.

Still, this really worked for me, much better than the last several things I started. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Loving this series. Poor Noah is dragged into another murder mystery with his friends. This time the mystery revolves around a famous costume worn in a movie. I really enjoy Noah’s neighbors Marc and Louis, but I think their friend Leon is a bit of a dick. Tall, dark and delicious Detective Javier is trying for Noah’s attention, but Noah is still avoiding him.

Excellent !

Noah is at it again, knee deep in murder and intrigue. This time it is old Hollywood, meets the 80's .

Funny, engaging dialogue, and some of the best characters to grace the pages of any book. Hope there is a number three.

The second book in the series and it is as good as the first one. Maybe even better because, by now, I really like Noah and I care about him a lot, so everything hits harder.

This time the mystery involves a blue dress, a suddenly very wanted memorabilia that belonged to an old actress. There is a murder that seems to be linked to the dress and there is a lot of people, including Jeffer's family, who thinks that Noah has it. Because, at some point, Jeffer had it; it was part of his memorabilia collection, one about which Noah knew nothing. Another secret, another thing that Jeffer kept from him...

It's already a difficult time for Noah: his insurance went up from one hundred and fifty-six dollars to one thousand ninety-two dollars a month; the medication makes him nauseous and he has lost his appetite. He can insist that he is not depressed, but he most certainly is not well. So is not the best moment to have to deal with yet another of Jerrod's deceits.

On a better note, Tina and Robert have discovered the truth about why Noah left Jeffer and they are trying to mend things between them, particularly Tina, who finally understood where did she went wrong:
“I’ve been thinking about everything, a lot, and I think I owe you an apology.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“But it does matter, Noah. It matters a lot. I kept trying to understand why you didn’t say anything and then I realized the awful thing I did to you, the worst thing I did, was not trusting you. I should have stayed out of things with Jeffer. I should have trusted that you had good reasons for the things you did. And that’s what I should do now. I’m just going to trust you. You don’t have to explain anything. You just have to accept my apology.”

Detective O'Shea is investigating the crime but he is also trying very hard to get Noah accepting to go on a date with him. Which Noah won't do because then he'd have to tell him that he is HIV-positive and he won't do it; this too, adds stress to his life.

Investigating the crime, though, that is something that helps him to have something different to think about and he is curious. So there he goes, visiting people, making questions, searching for connections and brainstorming with Marc, Louis and Leon :)

And let me tell you this: Noah's friends are fantastic characters, particularly Marc and Louis who kind of adopted him and, specialy Louis, keep trying to take care of him.
“You really didn’t have to, Louis,” I said.
“Oh, yes he did,” Marc said. “You know how he is. If we didn’t have you we’d have an apartment full of stray animals. You’re at least housebroken.”
I blushed again.
“Marc,” Louis said, softly.
“It was a joke.” To me he added, “I don’t really think you’re a stray animal.”

The mystery is fantastic, and I at least didn't have a clue until the last moment about who the killer was. I kept going from suspect to suspect without a real idea of what was going on. But once the mystery is unveiled all made sense.

I really, really like Noah, and I happy that he decided to confide in his mother, as difficult as the decision was for him. I need to get the third book because I want to know what is waiting for him.

5-Stars

Expect the last few chapters of any of Marshall Thornton’s ‘Pinx Video Mystery’ novels to be full of twists, turns, and surprises. Clearly that’s the case in Hidden Treasures just as it was for Night Drop, the first volume of this amazing series.

Once again we follow Noah Valentine and his friends and neighbors, Marc, Louis, and Leon, as they try to unravel a new series of murders. This time the murders are related to the recovery of a blue sequined dress once worn by fading Hollywood star Wilma Wanderly in one of her earliest movies.

And once again, Detective Javier O’Shea of the LAPD Homicide Division is frustrated with their meddling.

Beyond that, Javier has tentatively come out as a gay man and the focus of his attention on Noah isn’t solely related to Noah’s investigative interventions.

While personally attracted to Detective O’Shea, and loving the unexpected kiss he received from the policeman on the day of the LA Gay Pride Parade, Noah, for reasons of his own, does everything he can to discourage O’Shea’s interest.

Thornton’s series of mystery, murder, and mayhem is simply a delight. His writing style, capturing the sarcasm and snark of his characters, is spot on.

If you appreciate a good mystery filled with wonderfully delivered humor, the ‘Pinx Video Mystery’ series is definitely for you.

As improbable as a video store owner playing amateur sleuth is, I found this incredibly entertaining. It wasn't the murder mystery though that really held my attention, it was Noah and how he is living his life as an HIV positive man of the early 90's. He keeps this fact a secret from everyone (almost) and he especially doesn't tell Detective Javier, who is clearly interested in him on a more personal level.

This isn't going to be the last of the series and I can't wait to see what is next for Noah. I really, really want to see the eventual conversation he has with Javier about his status. It's more than obvious he is keeping the hunky detective at a distance because he is HIV positive, and he either thinks no man will want him when he learns the truth so he pushes them away first, or he is afraid he can't risk being with someone just in case of infecting his partner.

This doesn't exactly end on a high note (no HEA, obvs), but it certainly is a promising note that things aren't going to be terrible for Noah and I am excited to see how his life turns out. Fingers crossed it will be a happy life, but you never know.

Well I gotta say, Mr. Marshall Thornton, that if you are reading this, you need to get yourself in a comfy seat, prop your feet, toast yourself with a glass of wine or something and pat yourself on the back because this book is a hit. It is fabulous. I think I like it better than the first one. And i loved the first one. Man if you guys aren't reading these books, you definitely need to. Mystery, some giggles, some queens, and some drama all rolled in one. It really is a good time and I couldn't put it down.

Bless Noah's heart, he tried so hard to ignore what was going on around him, but darn it all if he isn't caught in the middle of another murder and a mystery that actually involves him this time. By way of his dead partner, who liked to keep secrets that Noah had no clue about. With the help of his downstairs neighbors/friends and some reconnections he never thought possible, he does everything he can to figure out what is going on. For some reason, everyone thinks he has a dress given to him by his dead lover. He has no clue about it or where it could even be. But the more time goes by, the more people that end up dead. And one on his doorstep. Well, his friends from downstairs doorstep. Noah ends up going through old things trying to figure out what is going on, only to finally learn after telling his mom a secret of his own, that the mystery of the dress itself has been solved. Now to figure out who is in such a desperate search for it and why.

In the first book, Noah got in some trouble by sticking his nose into the murder mystery. This one pretty much fell in his lap. And he didn't want it there. After almost losing his life, he just wants to run his business and work on trying to get better after the health gift his dead lover gave him. Trying to cope with HIV has left Noah in a mess more ways than one. His insurance is going up, his pills make his sick, he is losing weight, and he is afraid to tell anyone so he's dealing with all this on his own. To make matters even worse, his ex’s family has found out he is positive and are saying he is lying about him giving it to Noah. So poor sweet Noah has had enough. And now everyone is after for a dress he knows nothing about. Gah. If anyone ever deserves a break, it's Noah. I just want to hug him. He such a sweetheart. He cares so much about people. And is so loyal. What makes me so sad, though, is I think he feels like he's unlovable now and I hate that. He has caught the eye of a certain gorgeous detective, and I have been screaming at the book for him to just tell him and get with him. Or give him a chance! But fear of rejection is a major issue, especially with that kind of secret. Heaven knows you don't want to be looked at like a freak. *Sigh* I really love Noah lol.

Well, the fun has begun again and I gotta say…..I hope there is a 3rd lol. I'm so enjoying these mysteries. It's so comical to see what kind of mess Noah and his neighbors get into. Sometimes it's not a good thing, but they still can make it fun. I definitely recommend this book and if you haven't read the first one...go get it first! They are a blast to read!

Noah Valentine owns the Pinx Video store, and deals from day to day with employees who have diverse personalities. There’s never a day of monotony at the store, and, in fact, Noah often questions who’s really the boss. At one time, Noah was in a long-term relationship with Jeffer Cole, and he sometimes still wonders what category that relationship fell into. They were never legally married, and even though Jeffer is deceased, Noah still endures confusion and hurt, and also some blame from acquaintances who knew them. Noah just broke me. It’s hard to see him deny himself of what could be a good thing, but he was betrayed by Jeffer and now struggles, not knowing if he will have a future.

Jeffer worked as a Hollywood production designer and knew everyone who worked in the business. One particular someone is Anthony Mercer, a costumer with Mercy Costumes, who has been murdered for a classic 1940s blue sequin dress. And all of a sudden, Noah along with his best friends/neighbors, Marc, Louis and Leon, find themselves dragged into the mystery by a whole host of suspicious characters.

Detective Javier O’Shea has had his encounters with Noah and friends, and it doesn’t seem to surprise him that all clues lead him to Noah. Javier has been given the nickname Tall, Dark and Menacing, but the ‘menacing’ part is quickly changing. Noah’s curiosity, being nosy or just doing what he feels is right, gets him into all kinds of tight spots when it comes to the crime, and it’s fun to see him and his friends get involved, with brainstorming and bantering that brings humor to the story. There’s a little spark between Noah and Javier, but Noah is keeping him at arm’s length for good reasons. Noah also understands why it’s difficult for Javier to come out.

Within the setting of Los Angeles in the early 1990s, amidst bigotry and rioting, Marshall Thornton has created an intriguing and twisted murder mystery. Most of the storyline takes place in behind-the-scenes Hollywood, and he really brings that era to the fore—no cell phones, VHS and cassette tapes, and classic movies. This isn’t a story with an HEA for Noah, as there are still many issues that he faces which brings the AIDS/HIV epidemic to the forefront. The story reflects on how people with the disease were treated, the medical expenses, and not knowing how friends and family would react if they found out.

The first installment in the Pinx Video Mysteries series is Night Drop. It introduces Noah and Javier along with the rest of the cast, and is a must read. I read the two books back-to-back—both are suspenseful, well written mysteries, and heartrending as Noah’s story unfolds. I’m definitely adding Marshall Thornton to my A-list, and I’ll be watching for the next installment in this entertaining series.

Engrossing, sardonic, and at times, heartbreaking.

Poor Noah. He really goes through it in this one. The romance with Javier still feels flatter than the rest of the storylines but is getting more rounded as we get to know him more.

I enjoy getting to know more of Noah's gang too.

His mother is adorable and the scenes near the end on the phone were a real twister for the emotions.

This isn't my favourite murder mystery case and it felt like a lot of meandering and regurgitating the case in increasingly convoluted ways. Especially when Javier should be ahead of them but seemed to be letting them lead the case.

However, there were some proper funny moments that I enjoyed.

All in all, the 90s, LA sleaze, the jokes, Javier's yearning and Noah's reticence make a great novel.

Hidden Treasures (Pinx #2)
By Marshall Thornton
Kenmore Books, 2018
Five stars

How did I forget to write and post a review of this? The second of Marshall Thornton’s “Pinx” series, it takes us deeper into the life of Noah Valentine, a twenty-something who inherited his ex, Jeffer Cole’s video store in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake. Noah is HIV-positive, and given the year is 1992, he stands at the edge of that moment when the plague that decimated my generation began to become something one might possibly live with rather than unavoidably die of.

Then the murders start. Again. This time, it seems to be about some mysterious Holy Grail of Hollywood memorabilia, and Noah is once more dragged away from the shelves of his video store and into the shadowy back rooms of the film industry and its sometimes-less-than-sane denizens. Everyone he meets is a revelation and an education, for him as well as for Thornton’s readers.

Supporting him in every way, without confronting his real issues, are his erstwhile friends and downstairs neighbors Marc and Louis. More complicated is their friendly local detective, Javier O’Shea, whose evident interest in Noah was so heart-breaking in the first book.

The mystery that Noah and his underqualified friends have to puzzle out is interesting and peculiar—two traits one expects from any novel set in Los Angeles. But the book is really more about Noah and the shifting sands of his own life. Unlike the noir Nick Novak series—which is magnificent and almost operatic in its romantic darkness—there is something weirdly sitcom-ish about this, as if a gay Lucy and Ethel (and Fred and Ricky, I guess) were trying to solve a murder while one of them secretly had cancer.

Yeah. Weird like that.

Marshall Thornton doesn’t really let us have any easy emotions. This series isn’t like his truly comic stories. Noah and Nick have different challenges in their lives, and Chicago is not like LA; but they share a darkness that can’t help but touch our hearts in a very profound way.

Anything Thornton writes is worth reading. But even with his lighter books, he’s no lightweight.

Waited a little time for this book and was ready to start the minute it was downloaded onto my IPad.
The book was just as good as the first in the series. Noah is again caught up in a mystery which brings him into contact with Javier the detective.
Noah is still not out about his HIV status with his friends and so keeps Javier at arms length. I do hope that soon he will be able to talk to him as it is not fair, Javier seems like a nice guy.
The gang are all back and as great as before. The interaction between the group and the new female detective was very funny.
Can't ait for book 3.

This was fun – I’m enjoying that the mysteries in this series are being solved by a group of friends instead of an individual and I hope that continues. I liked the way this mystery involved the group’s current Hollywood work and connections as well as knowledge of old Hollywood. I have no idea if anything of the “how Hollywood works” stuff is accurate, but it made for a good story.

I continue to appreciate the way Thornton gives his characters little moments of self-reflection to highlight that when they’re not self-reflecting or acknowledging their feelings, it’s not because they don’t have feelings, it’s because they’re purposefully avoiding them. It keeps his main characters from feeling flat or like they’re just vehicles for imparting plot points. Similarly, I like the way Thornton has been drawing contrasts between Jeffer’s secrecy and Noah’s secrecy, both in terms of the characters’ reasoning and Noah’s inability to acknowledge the similarities.

That being said, I think some of the characters are a little too blase about some of the stuff they’ve experienced in the first two books, but that’s been only a minor issue so far.

My one complaint is the continued misuse of homophones that are proper nouns, not only in this book but in Thorton’s books generally (here, Louis was “Lewis” once, Ketel one was “Kettle One”; and in the Dom Reilly books, Lexis/Nexis was “Lexus Nexus” more than once, and so on). I’m wondering if it’s a voice-to-text issue because the errors always appear to involve words that sound alike. It happens infrequently enough that it’s only a minor annoyance, but I’m surprised the issue has occurred in multiple books because you’d think someone would notice the problem eventually.

I put this book off for a long time. I liked the first book, but for some reason wasn't in a hurry to get to the next. But I did enjoy this. It's a sweet, regular person solving a mystery story. Sure, Noah really doesn't want to get involved in another murder mystery, but his neighbors and friends are enthralled and somehow whether he likes it or not, this murder connects back to him through his ex before he passed. His amatuer sleuth skills are put to use again as people seem to be more willing to talk to him and the cops have fixated on someone who absolutely couldn't have done it.

This series is a SUPER slow burn romance. Noah is justifiably nervous about looking to get into a relationship again, and just because a certain hunky detective has expressed interest...well, surely he wouldn't stick around if he knew all of Noah's secrets. He's got enough on his mind dealing with his HIV status to try to fit another person in with all that. I liked that Noah's starting to expand his circle and support group with those who know.

The fact that this novel is set in the 90's definitely throughs in a bit of nostalgia for me. I do enjoy all the time period references. The mystery here was a little silly, but that's ok. It was still a lot of fun. I'm not going to put off the next book for as long. :)

This is a step up from the first book, not because the mystery was any more engaging, but because I'm getting more of a sense of Noah and his journey. The blue dress thing was neither here nor there. This is about Noah, his journey forward and his coming to terms with his past. And I'm interested. In Noah, in his friends, past and present, and his choices. And his mother. And of course, Detective Javier O'Shea.
And then there is Jeffer. Even though Jeffer betrayed Noah, Noah does not doubt Jeffer loved him. As a reader, I appreciate that. The grey. Relationships are frequently grey. We can love and still deeply hurt those we profess to love, doesn't make us evil, just fallible. And to my mind, a hell of a lot more interesting. I imagine that storage locker is going to hold quite a few surprises for Noah.

Looking forward to the next Pinx Video installment.

From that review: " I am wild about Hidden Treasures and the Pinx Video Mystery series by Marshall Thornton.  Extremely well written, evocative of an era still so close to ours that we can remember all the telling details that makes this book and series ring with familiarity and yet far enough removed that it feels nostalgic. Ah video tapes cartridges...VHS...some may remember from Blockbuster if you didn't have the smaller privately owned stores like this nearby?  Clunky black rectangles that you rushed to return?  No?"
