When We Let Go

Rate this book
The only way to get what she wants is to let go of everything she thinks she knows.

I never planned to live my life in a trailer in a tiny mountain town. Funny how divorce changes your plans for you.

And I never planned to fall in love again. After Jack, I figured I was better off alone.

But Connor Charles, with his dark red hair and glowering good looks, was as compelling as he was frightening, and I knew I should stay away from him. Especially if the rumors were true.

The police were interested in Connor ... but the more I got to know him, the more I realized ...

So was I.

I'm USA Today Bestselling author Delancey Stewart. My contemporary romances run the gamut of settings and setups, but they always deliver humor, heart and heat. It's a guarantee.

I write from my home in Denver, CO, where I manage a household full of boys and men. Okay, only one man. The hubs. But two boys. I mean, three if you count the hubs. (You see why I do words and not numbers. I was told there'd be no math in this bio. Someone lied.)

I grew up in California and have had more jobs than anyone on earth (personal trainer, pharmaceutical rep, copywriter, tech writer, marketing director, wine seller, elementary school teacher... I'm not kidding. The list. It goes on.) But the one I love the most is writing, in part because I get to meet people who love books and stories as much as I do! When I agreed to read Love Rebuilt (Kings Grove #1) by Delancey Stewart I knew that I would probably like the writing style as I read books by this author before. And what can I say except that I was right. The story circles around Connor and Maddie, both very interesting and deep developed characters that are hunted and hurting in very different ways.

A lot of the story is also in the surrounding of the leading characters and I feel it was a really great setting.

I saw for myself those giant trees and lived in an RV for some weeks. I experienced the temperature trop when leaving sweating Las Vegas one morning and ending up wearing several layers because there was snow outside only a few hours later. So I could really feel with Maddie. For my taste, she could have been slightly feistier but in the grand total she was an interesting character.

And funny enough I also slept some nights in a place like Connor’s so yeah I get the feeling really. I honestly admired how calm he remained in the eye of the shit that was going on around him. Just wow really a great character

What I liked was how real the setting felt. From the characters – to the surrounding nature ending with the small town gossip. This really could happen everywhere and I loved every second of it.

I can honestly recommend this book to readers that like a little suspense with real characters and a solid plot.
Please enjoy :-)

I don't generally like stories told from the first person perspective, but there's something about Delancey Stewart's writing that just keeps me reading anyway. This book was no different. I finished it all in one sitting, and if you had any idea how annoying I found the heroine, the fact that I didn't DNF this is a testament to the readability of this author's writing.

Like other reviewers have said, the heroine of this story is not likable at all. I couldn't identify with her. She was superficial, paralyzed by the bad choices she'd made in the past, and worst of all, dumb. I'm not trying to be mean and I suppose it was evidence of how much she allowed her ex-husband to control her, but honestly, she was stuck in some serious life ruts. I marveled at how long she took to come up with real solutions to her problems. Seriously. And maybe even worse than her slowness was how long it took her to stop basically blaming everything bad that happened in her life on her ex. By the time she finally saw how shallow her previous existence was, I was just about to dump this ebook on my DNF shelf. I'm glad she finally started turning things around and stopped wallowing in her deep puddle of self pity because I about had it with her.

We never get the H's perspective and I think this story would've benefited from it. Not only would we have gotten a break from the h's ridiculous inner monologue, but we would have been able to see that the H wasn't a cardboard cutout. After the mystery was solved (even though to call it a mystery would be a bit of a misnomer), the H was sweet enough, but he wasn't a very developed character. I also wish that we had answers re: the pictures of him and his bruised ex-girlfriends.

Overall, I appreciated that this story isn't erotica. I didn't have to skip any scenes (yay!) and the H also didn't seem like a manho, which is always a good thing in my book. However, the h almost ruined this story for me. Had she not started making changes when she did, this would have received one star. As it was though, I admire her for finally getting her act together, which is more than some fictional (and non-fictional) characters can say.

This book took me by surprise with how much emotion it evoked. It nearly brought me to tears a time or two. It started out as just a nice contemporary romance, and then as I read more it developed into so much more than just nice. There was a bit of a mystery added into the plot that added an interesting element. It created some tension and just a really enjoyable extra layer to the story. I love these small town romance stories where everyone knows everyone and someone is always full of gossip. The diner where everyone convenes for a good meal. And at it's heart are always good people willing to lend a hand where needed. Love Rebuilt gave me all of that.

I am so very excited that this is just the first book in a new series by Delancey Stewart. There are so many of the supporting characters that I would love to see get their own book. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

I never had the pleasure of reading the original version but I am so glad that I was able to read this new version of the story. I loved it. Connor and Maddie were such a great couple. They both have their own set of problems that they must navigate through. This is what pulls them together. Loved that connection between them. Great read and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait to read more of this series.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I absolutely loved reading this book. It is full of emotion, suspense, and fragile relationships. I feel sorry for Maddie that she is going through so much. She is coming to terms with the situation she now finds herself in due to her divorce. She has a barely built structure of a house, she is living in a cheap trailer and working as a waitress for a living. Her ex Jack, is causing trouble in her life. He is domineering and tries to steamroll over every decision that Maddie has to make. He even decided that she should sell her barely built home and land that has been in her family for generations. He even brings a seller for Maddie to meet. That's when she meets Connor, a well know author of thrillers, suspense and murder type books. They build a tenuous relationship. Maddie has her head full of local gossip about Connor and it is affecting her relationship with him. Maddie receives a call from her brother Cam. He wants to see her. Cam distanced himself from her when she did not visit their mother when she was very ill and then did not attend her funeral. Cam is bitter. He finds it hard to forgive Maddie. His wife Jess has been calling Maddie to just chat and keep her updated and in the loop of her brother's life. It is moving the way they reconcile. In the meantime, Maddie and Connor have trouble because of Jack. Maddie is trying to resolve it. She is all she can to salvage their relationship, what little there is. This is a very emotional read. Reading page after page I could not put it down. It is a quick read. I highly recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Delaney Stewart has given us a book that takes us on an emotional journey, filled with drama, angst, suspense, and of course a love that wins out in the end. The authors descriptions makes the story real and captivating. I was on the edge of my seat, turning the page, and impatient to see how the story was going to keep unfolding. The writing was smooth and the characters development was so spot on, I could easily envision the story in my minds eye. Definite five star book in my opinion.

When We Let Go is the first book in the Kings Grove series and is a great start to this new series.

The characters are well developed, realistically flawed, and have issues in their pasts to overcome. The storyline is engaging and well written, with a dirtbag cheating ex-husband, small-town gossip, suspense, character growth, and romance.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I really enjoyed this book. The main character is Maddie who has had a roller coaster life of decisions that reflect where she finds her self currently. The story takes place in a small mountain tourist town where drama, mystery, love and deceit takes place. I think the one message I keep thinking about is a reminder to stop regretting past choices or decisions we make, but to move forward. To celebrate not just the major moments in our lives but all those that create who we are. I definitely recommend this book.
I was given an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Love Rebuilt is not your ordinary romance read, but it's a story full of drama, mystery and romance. There is also some serious heartache. So keep tissues nearby because you will definitely need them. If you're anything like me, you'll need a whole box. It does have a happy ending, but the heartache is still there. My only problem with the book is that it is written from the point of view of one person: Maddie's. I would have loved to also have Connor's POV. It can still be written in the first person. I still enjoyed it a lot and I'm looking forward to the other books in the series. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance.

This romance has a thriller aspect to it, and makes Maddie wonder about her choices in life. Jack, her ex-husband keeps coming up to King's Grove to taunt her, but the reasons for it remain unknown. As Maddie says, "Jack, you visit more now, then when I was here as your wife."  Maddie learns to redefine what love is through her new relationship with Connor when she starts living outside of herself again. You'll love this book and realize what love truly can become.

This is the first book that I've read by this author - after reading this book I would definitely read more of her books and look for to the next book in this series. I thought Delancey did a great job with the main character, Maddie. Maddie is trying to rebuild her life and adjust to a drastic change in lifestyle after her husband cheats on her. I admired her spirit and determination, as well as her morals. The author also did a great job with Connor - I couldn't decide if he really was what all the townspeople were accusing him of or if he was just their scapegoat. This book definitely showed that things aren't always as they appear. I was given in ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was lucky to read an early version of this novel and loved it then. It’s become even better and is definitely a book worth sacrificing sleep for.

Maddie is funny and smart and takes charge of her own destiny, even if she’s not terribly sure what to set her sights on since her life was turned inside out by divorce-post-cheating-husband. Speaking of that handsome jerk (why, oh why couldn’t the bad ones be suitably ugly, too?) … does she go for a safe guy next? Nope, not Maddie. (I mean, what fun would that be anyway?) Instead the mysterious horror-writer and local notorious bachelor (dark mystery surrounds this one) Connor catches her fancy.

This book is easy to get lost in. It’s funny, heart-warming, and mysterious. It’s uplifting to see how Maddie remakes her life and gets it right this time. An enjoyable read that I highly recommend.

Im giving you fair warning read this book with a box of tissues because there are moments in this book that are truly heartbreaking. I shed quite a few tears reading it myself especially with the parts about with her brother & sister-in-law. So sad. The main story between Maddie (FMC) and Connor was actually quite lovely. How they tentatively tried to get to know each other when both of them were distrustful of each other with everything that had happened to them. As well as outside influences. Namely Maddie's flaming awful Ex-husband Jack. I so wanted to slap that idiot!! Its a fabulous read

Maddie is trying to figure out how to pick her life back up after her divorce and is finding it difficult when her ex will not give her anything other than a traitor, a shell of a house or leave her alone. Conner is a writer trying to put his life back together after a string of bad press and miss information and get his writing back on track. Connor gets the spark he needs to start writing again after meeting Maddie and Maddie is intrigued by the mystery that is Connor Charles.

When We Let Go was full of mystery, suspense, laughs, smiles and tears. I experienced every emotion while reading this novel. Connor and Maddie were perfect for each other in the rebuild of their lives after the lows that they had experienced. This was my first novel by Delancey Stewart and will not be my last. When We Let Go is a re-write of Love Rebuilt, it is the first novel in the Kings Grove series and is told from the first-person point of view.

Love Rebuilt by Delancey Stewart

“Carving out a new path, 3 stars”

Maddie has had crap luck when it comes to relationships. She thought she had it all with her husband only to find out it was all a lie. Now she’s hanging out in the mountain town she spent time in as a kid and trying to make ends meet. Her ex is sniffing around and causing trouble, she has a brother won’t speak to her, and what about the sinfully sexy mystery man she can’t help but wonder about?

Connor has lost everyone important to him at some point in his life and only been able to save one. Everyone treats him like a pariah because he’s a crime suspense writer. Anytime there is a issue around him everyone points a finger in his direction. When he drives into Maddie’s life he didn’t know what he was getting himself into.. then again neither did she.

I did enjoy Love Rebuilt, I just wanted more. I wasn’t fully satisfied with the story, but it could just be me. Love Rebuilt held a air of mystery and suspense with a dose of love. You got to glimpse at people changing opinions, loss, and love. I personally wanted more relationship coverage between not only the hero and heroine but some of the secondary characters. With that said I still can’t wait to see where Stewart takes the series as a whole.

Plot-4/5

Characters-4/5

Writing style-3/5

Overall-3/5

Reviewed at Romance Is Ageless

Love Rebuilt wasn’t exactly the lighthearted romance I was expecting. I was looking for a romance, and got so much more. This story is a slice of life novel. It’s complicated, at times intense and could be a page from anyone’s true life story. Connor and Maddie’s journey to finding a love worth a lifetime is full of such believable chaos, betrayal, gossip, danger, love, family and the realities of having no choice but to let go and go on, somehow.

Sometimes it’s so easy to get wrapped up in a story that you’ll begin to actually hurt for what they’re going through. Those are the stories that stick with me, the ones that make me feel a real emotional connection, and Love Rebuilt certainly has enough emotional involvement going on for it. Kings Grove could be any small town in any community. Gossips galore, everyone knowing your business… even if what the townsfolk “think” they know is far from the actual truth.

Connor is an amazing character. The things he goes through in this story are the things that would break a lesser man. Maddie is completely believable as she rebuilds her life after her marriage imploded. Her reactions to Connor as the story moves on makes perfect sense, I think many of us would have the same thoughts given the circumstances. And that is why Love Rebuilt captured me, because everything that happens makes perfect sense in the real world… these things could have easily happened. And I’m in danger of saying too much now, so I’ll wrap up with this thought: If you enjoy a really good romance, if you like putting puzzle pieces together to form the whole picture then you’ll also get caught up in this story. Although this is the first book by Delancey Stewart that I’ve had the pleasure of reading I”m now hooked and I’m heading to Amazon to pick up the next one. I’d definitely recommend this story to any Contemporary Romance reader who really enjoys a realistic, believable story… not just the romance but the entire setting and the secondary characters as well. You’ll be transported to Kings Grove so easily, and that is the type of writing that I’ll return to experience again and again.

I got all the feels from this sweet romance by Delancey Stewart, and so will you! Set in the King’s Grove where the Redwoods grow, the trees and scenery are as much a part of the story as Conner and Maddie.

Every time Maddie Turner thinks that her life can’t get any worse, it does. Divorced, broke, living in a trailer, Maddie can see all the places her life went wrong. Then the mysterious Conner Charles offers to save her, more than once, and in more than one way. Maddie is instantly likable, and I felt for her as she struggled with money, love, divorce, and the truth.

Conner Charles seems a recluse and is quite dangerous if the rumors hold true. Maddie decides to find out for herself who he really is.

Maddie’s journey of self- discovery is inspiring and real. Join Maddie and Conner as they find happiness and each other. I promise - you'll get all the feels too! Can't wait for the rest of the series!

Delancy Stewart has become one of my favorite romance authors. Her books are true love stories.
Maddie has had a life of ups and downs. The location is a small mountain town where tourists flock and drama takes center stage. She has made decisions that may have been poor choices but she realizes that in order to keep moving forward she has to stop the regrets and move on. Maggie will break your heart because many of her choices in men have been what has caused her to have such remorse. Every time she does something that could possibly cause her to regret her actions that is exactly what happens.
Conner appears to be a dangerous man, but is he? Did he really harm others or is he simply misunderstood? Can he bring her out of her regrets that her first husband caused and does he really want to take on that burden?
The tempo of the story is excellent and I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it. Highly recommended.

In When We Let Go Delancey Stewart developed characters that are very realistic and remind you of people that you may know or experience in some way in your day to day life. Maddie is a photographer who allows her dreams to go to support the man of her dreams, who turned out to be a nightmare. In the midst of this, she loses her family, including her beloved older brother Cam. Who abandoned who is the question...and then again, does it matter. Connor has his own demons to slay and is having difficulty doing so because of guilt and grief. He is a famous author enduring accusations of some pretty horrible things. Maddie has to discover for herself which is true; who "they" say he is and who she feels that she knows he is. It makes for a lot of drama, a couple of twists that are a bit expected, suspense, and a happily ever after that you need by the end of the story.

All in all, this is a very compelling story. I look forward to reading more books by Delancey Stewart.

I read the updated, re-written version of this book with both points of view and it filled my heart. Delancey is an author I have followed for a while and already knew I love her writing style. I was not disappointed! When I read the final page I was left with happy tears filling my eyes and a heart full of warmth, exactly the way I want to feel when reading an HEA.

Maddie is back in the small town she spent her childhood in after her marriage breaks up. She’s having to reinvent herself and come to terms with the person she allowed herself to become for her ex.

Connor is a reclusive writer fighting grief and false suspicion. He’s misunderstood and awkward, which doesn’t endear him any to the town people.

When they find a connection, can they trust each other (and themselves) or will the opinions and workings of others pull them apart?

I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, sadness, pain, secrets, and heartbreak.

This is Maddie and Connor’s story. Maddie is stuck. After her marriage ended she is living in a trailer and working in a diner. Connor is a writer of horror stories. He keeps to himself which always causes rumors. When these two meet the sparks fly. But not matter that they are good together both of them are keeping secrets. Can they make something work when they are not being fully honest? You get strong supporting characters in this story and plenty of back and forth to get a feel for all involved.

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.

I recommend this book.

Rumors and trust
Very good romance which has a strong tension because of the constant rumors. The hero is observed and immediately suspected at the slightest problem because of his supposed past and his privileged place of prey because he has money. Part of the story is quite sad despite the romance.
Maddie, divorced, is harassed by her ex who organizes without asking her, her house for sale. Connor is a potential buyer and he is very attracted to her, despite her improbable look when she leaves her trailer because her house is under construction. When Maddie learns all the rumors about Connor, a famous horror and black writer, she doubts, while he hesitates to close in on himself again.
Between rumors, suspicions of sequestration, threats, manipulations, but also the sad events of life, this story is both fascinating, beautiful and very moving.

Maddie has to deal with her cheating thief of an ex when a mysterious thriller writer comes into her life looking to buy her land. Conner was a dark character in the beginning with all the mystery surrounding him over things potentially going on at his house and his involvement with a minor. I was surprised Maddie would get so close when she wasn’t sure if he was a murderer and if she could trust him. He proves you shouldn’t judge based on gossip and provides a lot of sweet moments in this book too. Her estranged brother comes back in her life with his ill wife. And she has to deal with a father with dementia in a nursing home. This was an emotional tear jerker at times. There were funny moments too when Maddie stood up to her ex and how she refused to give up being fashionable even if she was barely scraping by.
