Brothers Maledetti #3

Lightning Struck

Rate this book
Chiara doesn’t like Jack. Jack doesn’t like Chiara.
The story should end there.
Except . . . maybe Chiara finds herself daydreaming far too often about Jack. And maybe Jack finds Chiara aggravating in an adorable sorta way.
Maybe Jack and Chiara find themselves falling in love.
The problem, of course, remains.
Jack is a ghost.
And Chiara is not.

Jack Knight-Snow has had a bad year for losing things. So far he has lost a ship full of ancient treasure, his family, his friends, his title, his lands and money, his fiancé, the century into which he was born . . . oh, and his physical body. Worse, feisty Chiara D’Angelo might just finish the job and make him lose his mind.

For her part, Chiara simply wants to help Jack get his body back and move on with his life. She doesn’t want to like his snarky humor or his gorgeous eyes or the way he accepts her exactly as she is. She’s a hot mess when it comes to romantic relationships. Case in point . . . she’s developing feelings for a ghost.

But tackling the problem of Jack’s ghostliness is not straightforward. Soon, Jack and Chiara find themselves embroiled in a mystery which creates more questions about the D’Angelo brothers’ gifts of Second Sight. Set against the backdrop of Tuscany, Italy, Jack and Chiara race to uncover answers about the past before becoming history themselves.

Though the third book in the Brothers Maledetti series, Lightning Struck is a full-length, standalone novel.

Lightning Struck (Brothers Maledetti #3) by Nichole Van is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. I didn't read the first two books but I understood the basics but at times I think it might have helped. I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would. I liked it so much I bought one of the other books. Jack is stuck in a Shadow Land, somewhere in-between life and death and has been for 200 years. He gets pulled through to reality but it doesn't go as planned and he comes over ghost like. This is a different world for him. Chiara and Jack have a strange love/hate relationship...and it is awesome. So much happens in this book...suspense, action, and love. Enjoyed it!

Chiara has been a problem solver and a fixer from an early age. She can't stand to see people in need and not help them. So it's only natural for her to want to help Jack get his body back so he can move on with his life. But the more time she spends with him, the more she wants to throttle him. How can one man be so frustratingly irritating, yet so handsome?!

To say Jack has had a bad year would be an understatement. He has lost everything he has ever owned and loved. Now he's just a ghost.. a clinging memory of what once was. His only bright spot has been Chiara. Yes, the woman drives him absolutely crazy and she's a hot mess. But she's cute crazy and an adorable hot mess.

As Chiara and Jack work together to figure out how to fix Jack's ghostliness, they unknowingly unearth more of the mystery behind the D'Angelos curse. But the more they uncover, the more questions arise. With danger lurking in both the human world and the shadow world, secrets, and prophecies of the past and the future, will Chiara and Jack be able to figure everything out before it's too late? And what does fate have in store for them? Are they doomed in love or will they finally get the HEA that they deserve?

Wow! All I can say is WOW! I will admit that this was a slow start for me. I wasn't invested in it from the beginning like I was the other books. But all the sudden, about halfway through, things started to click and I could NOT put this book down! My emotions were all over the place and I couldn't read it fast enough! There were twists and turns that I did not see coming! Just when I thought I *might* have figured something out... BAM! Plot twist! I have two words for you... mind blown! I LOVE it when that happens!

Have I mentioned before that I am loving this series?! I have devoured it! I cannot wait for Tennyson's book! And I am definitely keeping Ms. Van on my radar! It's always fun discovering a new author!

As for my casting... I think these two make the perfect Chiara and Jack! What do you think?!

4.5* rounding up

Chiara is a spit fire! She's feisty and full of spunk. She's not gonna let anyone tell her she can't do something. And be warned, don't mention that she is short and very petite. Oh heavens, you will get an earful for sure. And possibly a very deadly glare. You have been warned!

On the other hand though, Chiara is a true friend. She loves deeply and will willingly drop everything to help her family and friends, and children. Her impulsiveness and spunk have gotten her into trouble a time or two and will probably many more times throughout her life. But this little spot of trouble she's gotten herself into now is a little bit more life threatening. She's come across some pretty important information regarding the Italian Mafia. Now her life is threatened and she must hide. The best place to hide would be with Jack at his villa. *covers eyes* Ok, maybe not the best place to hide but the safest...scratch that maybe not the safest either. Why? Well let me enlighten you (especially if you haven't read any of the previous books-which I highly recommend and emphatically suggest you do before reading this one, must read in order).

Jack is a ghost. Well not really a ghost. He's caught in between. Chiara and her brothers with their GUTS (special gifts, guts is a silly acronym they gave it as kids) have been working tirelessly to find a way to save Jack from his corporeal state after they rescued him in a previous book. And with no such luck as to finding any clues, he's just stuck. At first he "lived" in Chiara and her grandmother's apartment with them. But after a few too many fights and banters between him and Chiara she sends him away to live with her brother. A year passes and Jack has become quite the catch and mystery in the Bachelor world. He's found a sunken treasure and has been caught on camera. The world wants to know who this mysterious, handsome bachelor is, but of course it comes back to his problem of being a "ghost". So he stays hidden. Until Chiara must stay hidden with him and brings her troubles and the world to his door.

Oh, these two! Children behave!! They really are like little kids with their back and forth banter. You know, one child says something or pokes another. The second child just can't not make a comment back or poke the first child back. And so it begins and continues on until they've both commented and poked each other into a full on feud. Ok that might be a little dramatic, but very true. The verbal sparring between these two is quite fun and very witty. They're both pretty smart and had me laughing and cheering one or the other on throughout the book. So come with your verbal sparring gear on while reading. So, hence why I said earlier in the review that it isn't the safest thing for them to be hiding out at Jack's villa.

And of course we all know why they're pestering each other right? They like each other. Plain and simple. They can't touch each other, and Chiara is keeping her secrets locked up tighter than Fort Knox so Jack does the only thing he can to keep her attention. Verbal battles. Chiara just can't resist. Call it part of her past issues that she's trying to work through.

Without giving spoilers for those who are reading the series, and to not confuse those who haven't read the series...So much is revealed and figured out about the Maledetti family's history and the whys that have been left unanswered. Chiara keeps dreaming about her father (and Jack). I have to say that I love, love, love, love, love their ancestor who is the main person in the prologue. The mad (insane) family member. He was awesome! Had me laughing...or chuckling. It takes a whole family to solve the madness and unlock the secrets.

If you've been reading this series you really are gonna be blown away with some of the revelations given. It is a happily ever after for Chiara but it's a cliffhanger with how it ended. Noooooooooo!!! But never fear, the next book is supposed to be coming out in a couple months or so. Can I just say Tennyson y'all?????? His is THE book I've wanted most in this series. I loved Lucy and Branwell but, yeah it's Tennyson. I have no idea how she's going to do it and explain everything that was revealed, wrap it up and have us saying goodbye to the Maledetti family after the next book...but I can't wait!!! I might be a mite bit sad when it's all said and done because I've really enjoyed this series. But then there are is the novella about the parents that she's writing too, so Bonus! And new series and books to experience!

Content: Clean. There is a mild swear word that the characters say throughout the story. Some moments of peril. A couple kisses (yeah figure that one out with it being between a living, breathing human and a "ghost"-good luck!), gun shots, lightning strikes but nothing overly graphic.

I received a review copy. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I love these brothers and their little sister, Chiara, and love that each book focuses on one of them. Their family has a curse that leads to some interesting, tricky, and confusing situations. It's so entertaining to try and figure things out, right alone with the characters, but I honestly can't wrap my head around some of it....yet. This series doesn't necessarily have to be read in order, but I think it's fun to so do. Everything makes a little more sense as the series builds.

What would you do if you fell in love with a ghost? Just ask Chiara, although she's probably going to deny it. She is feisty, small, impulsive, and snoopy, but the perfect match for Jack. I love the bantering that went on between them and as the sparks started to fly, I just knew this match had to somehow work out or my heart was going to tragically break in two.

There are some intense moments, due mainly to three things: Chiara is in danger; there is something threatening Jack; and some swoony chemistry is smoldering. I really enjoyed it and love Nichole Van's style, but I've got to read the next book to see if I can finally make sense of everything--especially the paranormal aspects. I can't wait to dive into Italy with this family once again.

Content: mild, swoony romance; mild language, but lots of it; mild violence.

I know that this is supposed to be a stand alone and the author does a good job at telling you the important things from the previous books but I think it would be better to read them in order. The stories of the couples are unique to each book but the story of the brothers and their GUT’s, as their younger selves called themselves, or their Second Sight as what it is. They can see, hear, feel, touch or foresee things to come or see things from the past. This curse as they called it comes into question in this book. This book is more than just a romance as it contains paranormal elements, obviously as one of the main characters is a ghost (who never really died 200 years ago) and mythology. So it is not an easy read if that is what you are looking for. It is an adventure, a mystery, and a romance!

Chiara and Jack are opposites but they like to be challenged and they like to be around the other the more time goes on. Jack being a ghost is the only problem. He was brought from the shadow world by Branwell, Chiara’s brother. They have been trying to figure out what happened to him and how he connects to these scars in the world that only Jack can see. These scars open up at times and black sludge (they nicknamed it Chucky) comes out and tries to take Jack. Jack is also a great something uncle to Lucy, Branwell’s wife.

So while they are trying to figure out Jack’s life and the tears in this world. Chiara gets herself into some really bad trouble and has to lay low. And she finds herself sleepwalking with some very scary lightning talk and looks! So yeah, lots of action.

Got to love Jack! Poor guy from his time, he feels so helpless to not be able to help Chiara or hold her or nothing! But he is finding that he can get a little piece of him to be corporeal at a time, it just causes great pain and has a side effect. But Jack will do anything if he can just touch Chiara. So you really need to read this to see how he does it and how he finally kisses his Chiara! Yes, it is swoonworthy!

If you like birds, sleepwalking, mobs, paparazzi, guns, lightning, scars, Italians, Etruscan mythology, oracles, Tages, finding love in an impossible situation then this might be for you.

I really enjoy Nichole's writing and the romances that she creates. I love the premise of this series and have enjoyed it, though sometimes I feel like the rules of the otherworldliness aren't known enough for my taste. I have to suspend reality a bit more than I would prefer.
Still, I love her characters and their interactions, and the romance is always spot on.

Another fun installment in the Brothers Maledetti series! While this can stand on it's own, you'd want to read the other books first. And this review may contain mild spoilers if you haven't read the other books.

Things I liked:

I think Chiara and Jack are my favorite couple so far. Their relationship development just felt more believable this time around. There is that instant attraction, but it takes them a little while to fall in love. Chiara is a likable characters, I thought her brothers (and Jack) were too hard on her at times. Teasing and stuff, when they know she doesn't like it. It's not wonder she didn't feel comfortable opening up to them. Jack was an interesting character as well, being a ghost and all!

This one kept me on my toes and glued to the pages. I enjoyed Chiara and Jack, good chemistry and fun encounters. Interesting dynamic between them and wondering how or if things will work out.

Things I didn't like:

I really need to think of a new heading, there wasn't really anything I didn't like in the book. I did think the Italian Mafia angle could have been left out, only because it basically played no real role in the story. In the end, if felt a little contrived and thrown in only as an excuse to throw Chiara and Jack together more. I would have liked if that storyline had been developed a little more. I also felt in the end, not much happened for the overall story. We learn more about the curse and all, but still felt a little disappointed more wasn't accomplished. I don't like that book four still isn't out yet!! I want to read it right now!

Overall, this was a fun contemporary romance with a touch of paranormal. I enjoy the series and all the world-building the author has created. Fun series!

This is the third book in a series. It can be read as a stand alone, but to fully appreciate the story, you will want to read the others. I have only read the second book, so I really need to read the first!

Jack and Chiara are quite the couple. They have some problems. The first is that he is a ghost and she is not. The second is that they are both strong personalities. It leads to some misunderstandings and trust issues. They have loads of chemistry. The banter and the sarcasm were fantastic. I loved it!!

This book has aspects of romance and paranormal. As I mentioned above, Jack is a ghost. Chiara's triplet brothers are oracles, and there is a tear between realms that oozes sticky black goop. You need to read the book to fully understand. The book also has an aspect of mystery. The family is trying to solve how to get Jack back to a corporeal form. They are also trying to figure out how to break the family curse... the oracle thing. Generations have literally gone mad from dealing with the powers.

This is a fun book to read. It is clean with kissing and non-graphic violence.

I am so hooked on this series!!! I love the details that are revealed with each book, and even though I'm not normally into paranormal, the characters and their relationships are so well grounded in reality that I find the unusual and super creative aspects of the plot fascinating. I had assumed that this third book would be Tennyson's story, the third brother, so it was a surprise to find that Chiara, their younger sister was the main character. She is a hoot. Strong, confident, headstrong, and intimidating, so it was fun to see her internal thought process and learn about her vulnerabilities. The perspective is also from Jack's point of view, and it was interesting to see how he adapts to the differences of modern day life. There is great chemistry between Chiara and Jack, and even though they drive each other crazy... they secretly love it :) I loved that we got to know more details about Cesare, their father, and some more of Tennyson's struggles and experiences. Even though this book wrapped up nicely, it also introduced more questions and I can't wait to read the next book! Highly recommend this series, and be sure to read them in order for max understanding and enjoyment.

Another fun book by Nichole Van! I'm a fan of her books and I'm always on the lookout for her next book.

This one was intense and volatile! Both in relationships and in the storyline. I sure don't understand how a good lot of the paranormal stuff happens, but I always enjoy these stories. They are engaging and the characters have become familiar to me. The kissing moments in this book were fantastic!! Tingling, toe curling. . . fantastic.

Content: kissing, frequent mild swearing (which I didn't love)

This is the third book in this series. It is the sisters story. Chiara is a complex character with a lot of emotional baggage. She drove me a little crazy, but overall I enjoyed this whole story. I love the twists and turns in these books. The men are just amazing and I love them all. Jack is no exception. So much was left undone at the end, but there were no cliff hangers. I am so excited for Tennyson's story:} These are clean romances for 16 and up. Some steamy kisses that are just kisses:}

This book took a little time to get into and then I was hooked. The chemistry between the two main characters is fun and full of clean sizzle. The story line has twist and turns. Some of the brothers supernatural gifts are kinda confusing but I still very much enjoy reading this series.

Jack Knight-Snow is a ghost who has lost everything. Since 1818 he has been barely existing until the D'Angelo triplets plucked him from the shadow world. Now he half-exists. Chiara D'Angelo is a research specialist and part time Private Investigator who is trying to solve the riddle of Jack's current state of existence.

I loved Jack, especially when his inner 19th century British nobleman comes out. He has done a great job of adjusting to the 21st century - especially since he has lost everything familiar to him and everyone he loved. Their banter was fun, but Chiara was a few too many types of crazy for me. I had a hard time connecting to her character.

Overall, a really good book and I can't wait for Tennyson's story!

Written in NV’s signature style, it was an enjoyable read though probably my least favorite. Something about the way the two main characters relationship developed didn’t make me as invested in them the way as I usually am in a NV book, but like I said at first, it was till an enjoyable read.

Bumped up the rating because this series is still capturing my interest, even years after reading.
Jack Knight-Snow is one of my favorite characters. It’s such a fun read! Even years later, all of the characters are imprinted in my mind! It’s been so fun to re-read this series!

I’ve never been one to read sci-fi or fantasy, but these books are FUN! The writing is smart and quirky, the characters are likable.
The description says this is a stand alone novel, but I think I have to go back and re- read 1 and 2.

So far, the first book in the series, Gladly Beyond, is my favorite. Chiara is just plain irritating. No matter how many times Jack says to himself how bright she is… she isn’t. She makes a lot of foolish decisions that puts her in harm’s way. Also, I had to grit my teeth waiting for her to catch up on overlooked, clues.

Don’t want to spoil the mystery, but I was a little bit disappointed.

I have only ever read one other book (novella) from Van and I really enjoyed that. When I heard about this series I wanted to read her other stuff. I haven't yet read the first two books in this series but oddly enough ( yeah for me) it doesn't matter. You can read this series in any order you wish.

This book begins with a D'Angelo ancestor from 1723, but the reader should be confused about what was happening. (ooohhh)
The book then moves to Florence, Italy, July 2016. Jack Knight-Snow or Lord Knight is introduced. "I am a ghost. Loss defines me...As a ghost I have lost everything." Jack was born in England in 1812 and was a Baron's son. He was 29 years old when he "died". Now, he watches over Chiara D'
Angelo.
Chiara has 3 brothers. Triplets, Dante, Branwell and Tennyson (all have their own books). They all have the Second Sight, but each brother has a gift that only they can do. Tennyson being affected by madness, more so than the others.
Chiara struggles to find a steady boyfriend. She ends up sabotaging her relationships. Jack sits back and observes. Chiara and Jack fight a lot. One day, Jack moves in with Tennyson. From there the book takes off. Chiara moves on with her life and a year later, things have changed for Jack. He found a bit of purpose and has a steady following of fans. He’s a bit of a celebrity... because he’s so hot of course. His manners, way of speaking, accent and dress is attractive but wait! He’s a ghost so...
Chiara then finds herself in trouble and takes Jack with her into hiding. Now that Jack is a local celebrity, they are being followed by paparazzi.
Chiara struggles to remain in hiding, finding out new things about herself, solving the mystery behind her dreams and deciding what to do about her feelings towards Jack. Jack begins to push his body into our realm and become solid but it’s very painful.

There's a lot on Chiara's plate. "Lightning and I...there was a history there. And , no, I didn't want to talk about it. "

..."In a matter of heartbeats. Snarky Jack...drove me crazy. " This book was great for banter between Chiara and Jack. They deliberately drove each other nuts.

I enjoyed the humor that the author threw into the book. There are discussion questions in the back so this book might make for a pretty good book club choice. There is actually quite a bit to discuss.

Overall, while this book is considered rom/com or just romance, Van added in more than just that. All emotions are felt in this book. Chiara is a very strong personality. I can see some people being bothered by her. She did start to bother me a bit toward the end of the book. Jack was a good character. The way Van describes him is something I could certainly deal with! Get ready to get comfortable because this book is quite long, longer than I expected. I would recommend this book to those that enjoy clean romance novels but with a bit more depth to them. There is also mystery and a bit of suspense.

I was able to get the first book in the series off Amazon for free. I'm not sure if it is still listed that way.

Content: one instance of jackass and damn, sexually clean

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

MY TAKE
I thought Jack was hilarious. Chiara made me crazy. She didn't come across as so over the top in the first two books, so that surprised me. I enjoyed how Jack and Chiara slowly fell for each other (well, Chiara was really the slow one).

Van is really good at setting up scenarios where two people are in love with each other but can't show it. In this case, Jack being a kind-of ghost complicated their relationship. But I think the biggest problem was Chiara's self destructive behavior. Seriously unattractive. It was amazing Jack could look past it. She had multiple too-stupid-to-live moments. One would normally have me closing the book. It's a good thing I'm committed to the series.

And on that point I was not disappointed. There were some great disclosures about the ongoing GUT issues and better understanding about what's really going on. No solution yet.

And by the end, Chiara's brain finally kicked in, so I'm not feeling sorry for Jack anymore.

This is the third installment of the Brothers Maledetti series.
This story focuses on Chiara (the triplet's sister) and Jack, who was introduced in Love's Shadow.

Although it could technically be read as a stand-alone, I don't advise it. To get the most out of the story and understand the character development, it is best these books be read in order. Especially this one, since there is considerable new information about the curse and Jack's story began in the previous book.

I really liked the book and am really interested in reading the last installment, which comes out in April. I can't wait to see how the whole story unfolds and what happens to the brothers in light of the new information revealed in the book. But I have to say that Chiara is my least favorite of the D'Angelo siblings. So, even though I really liked it, I believe this is my least favorite book of the series.

I still highly recommend it, as it plays a crucial role in the series and it's still a good book overall!

Hmmm, I did love this book (once again wishing there was no language in it). I was REALLY wanting to read Tennyson's story, so I was a tad disappointed that this was Chiara's story instead. I do like her, but it felt less urgent to get to her happy ever after because Tennyson needs some resolution. However, after reading some into the story, I did get drawn in. Although, this is probably the most weird of all the ones I've read so far with Gruncle Jack being a main character (in all his ghostly glory)....I did still like it a lot, but not as much as the others I've read in the series. I, once again, appreciate resolution at the end of the book. It just made me happy. I like that Chiara is so imperfect and needs counseling. Because, we're all a little imperfect.

Wow!!! This book was even more awesome than the last. I was totally sucked in from the very first. I couldn't put it down from start to finish.

I love seeing how messed up Chiara is and how competent Jack is in getting used to the 21st century. I love that he uses voice automation. Score!!

Seeing their relationship develop and seeing how they challenge as well and try each other was awesome. I love it when characters are real. Not perfect, not amazing, real.

They mystery woven throughout the series of books is intriguing. I love the paranormal stuff that is woven so well throughout. Well done. I can't wait for the next one!!!

Love this series and book so much!

I haven't read many ghost romances but somehow Nichole nailed it once again. I absolutely loved seeing Jack and Chiara together.

Chiara is so bubbly and unique! I love her tenacity and lack of filters. She is absolutely brilliant and yet like a child.

Jack is the perfect English gentleman. I love how much he just loved and cared about Chiara! He has me swooning left and right.

Finally I just love that this mystery with Chucky and the family's GUTs continues! I cannot wait to see how this series will end!

Lightning Struck (Brothers Maledetti 3) - PG13
Violence: creepy and disturbing paranormal stuff
Language: fewer than 50
Sex: nope, but as in earlier books, super romantic kisses!

Just like in the earlier two books in the series, the Hero completely makes this book. I'm a little over this heroine and her bizarre, childish, and annoying behaviors. The craziness of the Maledetti curse continues. I like that the curse is a common thread but it doesn't overtake the story.

A rollercoaster ride for sure!

I am seriously hooked on this Brothers Maledetti series. Far too many chores have been pushed aside as I just NEEDED to know how things would play out. Chiara and Jack were such great characters in this book, and Chiara especially was just so human and made mistakes. I loved the twists and turns this story took, and can’t wait to dive into the next and final book in the series!

I have really enjoyed this series!! I love the paranormal mixed with the contemporary. And I love being in Italy! I feel like I’m transported there every time I pick up one of these books.

I really liked Jack! He is a true English gentleman. I liked seeing how he adjusted to being in this century. He had so many new things to face! Not only was he suddenly in the future, but he was also a ghost. I thought he handled everything incredibly well! It was fun to see him use technology to help him do things.

I liked Chiara, but she also really annoyed me and got on my nerves. She and Jack had some great banter going on! Both are witty and liked to push each other’s buttons. And they were good at it! Especially Jack. The romance between them was great! The kissing scenes – oh, my! Swoon! I wondered what would happen to make it possible for them to be together. It worked out in a plausible way. For a paranormal universe anyway. :)

There are so many questions left unanswered at the end of this book. I can’t wait for the next one to come out!! I want to know what happens, and I really, really want to know Tennyson’s story!

I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.

Didn’t love this one either. 🫤 I think I would have enjoyed it more if their mad attraction hadn’t come from no where. Would have liked it better if there was more relationship building instead of intense attraction and love-hate. Plot wise, it almost felt like a place holder for the wrap up that will come in book 4. No real resolution in the overall story and the immediate danger in the book (Italian mafia no less) just fizzled. Chiara as a character is especially hard to pin down. She is kind of all over the place.

These books leave me shook. Nichole is seriously one of my all time favorite authors. The audio version is amazing and the narrators do a great job. There is an amazing British accent for Jack the regency era man stuck in the 21 century as a ghost. Just read this book for that sentence alone. I love jack’s classic dark British humor, his old fashioned manors, and how he discovers the 21 century. I love Chiara’s sass and salty big Italian personality in a tiny body. Their combo of personalities and whit are GOLD. Like seriously their conversations are the best part of the book haha. Chiara’s problems and her way of dealing with grief felt so REAL. Her growth in the series has been the most fulfilling to read out of all the characters. Man I love this D’ Angelo family! Every single character and how they interact with each other is the best. This book will make you feel all the feels though. Seriously. And the problems that Jack has to deal with being a ghost makes me think of things I take for granted. The paranormal stuff always blows my mind and is always fun to read. I don’t want this series to eeeennndddd.

SPOILERS and book notes:
In 1812 Jack Knight-Snow inherited his dads title. He has an accent! And he is now a ghost. Transparent and walk through walls. Now he is in 2016. “He is worse than a nobody. He is a nothing.” Chiara and him are housemates and she teaches him all the modern things and he is her guardian angel. A self appointed one Bahah. He is from the regency era so I love all his perspectives on propriety and courtship haha. but he doesn’t have touch, smell, or taste! Chiara is an Italian spitfire professional researcher and private investigator. A year later and Jack is still a ghost but he is a renowned treasure Hunter. He excavated a sunken ship full of treasure and is famous. I am happy that he is now living with Tennyson. They are two lonely souls good for each other. I love that Chiara and jacks relationship is them just trying to bug each other. Oh no Chiara turned in info to incriminate the mafia so now they are after her. He figured out how to make is finger corporeal but it causes him pain. He touched her hand and it was the first human contact he has had in 200 years. What a beautiful moment. And then she said “there is hope for… us.” Ahhhh there is so much anguish and longing in Jack to be human again! In 1818 chocolate was consumed as a beverage but hard (solid) chocolate wasn’t invented until 1875. So he consentrated on making his mouth solid to eat the chocolate and it was heavenly. I love that she finally admitted that Jack was the Tom to her Jerry. The roadrunner to her coyote. Perfect analogies. Haha. But only after he lost conscience. Ahh Jack became solid to save Chiara from an aggressive man trying to kiss her. And then while he was solid, HE KISSED HER. Or she kissed him. And bc he hasn’t been able to feel lutersely anything in 200 years, it made the kiss that much more special. And then he snapped back to being transparent and it’s so sad!!!! But I love how they tease and talk and banter about it. It’s hilarious. Chiara has never gone from “enemy to ghost guy friend to ghost boyfriend before.” Hahah he saved her when she fell in the river. Even if it was super painful and then they kissed and he faded. And I’m dead. And then her three brothers come to talk to her and their sibling dynamic is freaking hilarious. Three older brothers bahaha. She is the perfect annoying younger sister and I love it. Oh my crap. Chiara accidentally shot Jack while he was trying to save her from a bullet! But since she shot him he has stayed in this world! WILL HE LIVE!?!?? The bullet stays in his body grounding him in this world!! Now I’m sobbing with Chiara. Love jacks dark humor soooooo much. And that Chiara says: “I hate your stupid Brit’s dark humor” as he teases her about her shooting him. I love how he never takes for granted the touch of another human and his senses! Bc he went so long with out. I love how Chiara sobs so much after this. It is so healthy and normal and human. Oh my heck Chiara finds out her dad didn’t commit suicide but he was just trying to stop the D’ Angelo curse when he got struck by lightning!!!!! I love how Jack said “Chiara better prepare herself for some serious courtship. British Lord style.” Bahah I love that Jack helps Chiara through her tendencies to not trust in relationships and expect the worst. She is slowly self evaluating her self and recognizing when she is having a problem with it in the moment. Their bantering is THE BEST. I love that her surprise is that she is going to a therapist. That is so healthy. And I love how old fashioned Jack is with his manners! “They are both going to live happily ever after bc they are both committed to becoming their best most whole selves.” The whole family is in Lucy’s hospital room when the twins were born healthy!!! I LOVE THIS FAMILY.

So, the book I'm reviewing today is Lightning Struck by Nichole Van. This is the third book in the Brothers Maledetti series. Oh, I so love this series. It's not only a romance story but with a lot of very interesting and surprising twists. It has historical fiction, supernatural, and mystery too. That's exactly why I love it. There's a lot of everything in it and it takes me to picturesque Italy too. Fantastic!

In this third installment, this one is about Chiara, the one and only sister of the D'Angelo triplets and Jack Knight-Snow. Chiara is a very feisty and very bubbly character. She's very adorable and her antics are very funny. In this book though, she finds Jack very irritating and gets to her nerves. Aside from that, she still gets this weird dream that keep haunting her about the death of their dad. Jack, on the other hand, is a very curious and interesting character as well. Jack first appeared in the second book Love's Shadow. On this book, more is revealed about the mystery surrounding Jack's character and how he is in anyway related to the D'Angelo's. If you love the first two books, you will definitely not get disappointed with this one.

Wow! There are a lot happening in this book and it has more to do with supernatural things that have surrounded the D'Angelo's. And this time, Chiara, the only sibling purported to be not fortunate enough or maybe better off not gifted with The Sight is having this vivid and scary repetitive dream that had haunt her in her childhood. Now, the dream is coming back and it seems to be telling Chiara something and she won't rest until she gets to the bottom of that secret message and mystery.

This is such an enjoyable read especially when it comes to Jack and Chiara's scenes exchanging banter and trying to piss off or outwit the other. Obviously, Chiara is more often the one that gets irritated in the exchange. It's very cute and it's obvious that these two have a thing for each other. They are such a very lovely and adorable pair. Their exchanges always give me a laugh.

On to a more serious note, a lot has been revealed about the gift of sight of the brothers because of the mystery surrounding Jack and Chiara's recurring dream. It's seems like there might just be hope for the cursed brothers. I really love that idea. I so root for them to master their abilities and not be turned into lunatics because of the strong pull of their gifts. I want them to live long and not follow after their ancestors who didn't have the chance to grow old because of this curse or this family gift. And most of all, I wouldn't have to worry about Ten. Ten is one of the triplets who is mostly susceptible to the effects of the curse. So, I'm pretty sure the next book would be about Ten and them finding more concrete information about their gifts and maybe win over the curse after all. I'm so stoked!

I just love this series. I give this book five scenes with lightning. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I am supercharged to know what's going to happen next and finally be able to hear about Ten's story. A lot of possibilities are presented in this book and I am so so eager to learn about them. This is probably one of the most enjoyable series I have ever read or the most enjoyable yet. It's incredibly addicting and this is one addiction I'd love to keep. I hope this series does not end on the next book.

Hope...when you haven't had any for as long as you can remember...can be a dangerous thing. Hope leads to wants. And wants lead to disappointment. And disappointment, when you are already on shaky emotional ground, can be deadly.

I love Nichole Van’s writing. It’s clever, witty, funny, intelligent, unconventional and a little bit wacky. Her books have intricately woven plots, wonderfully laid out twists and turns, and heart-achingly broken characters who stay with you even after the last page has been read. This third installment of the Brothers Maledetti series is no exception.

The author has a way with infusing such angst into her main characters, which I love....but, man....the angst of Jack tops them all. I mean, who can have more angst than a 19th century English baron stuck in a ghost-like form in the 21st century Italy, in love with a flesh-and-Blood woman who physically looks exactly like the ex-fiancée who left him at the altar? Jack is absolutely swoon worthy and so lovable. Sigh. Chiara, I had a bit more trouble understanding and loving. She is prickly, impulsive, immature and has a lot of emotional baggage which she doesn’t want to deal with. But her past, present, and future unfold slowly and carefully as the plot progresses and I found myself sympathizing with her, even if I hadn’t liked her at the beginning. Jack and Chiara’s dialogue is snarky, clever, and sometimes downright mean but they build a special relationship with that unique bond they have. And the mystery of the triplet brothers’ supernatural gift and what that means keeps building.....

I don’t usually read sci-fi or paranormal books but Nichole Van weaves an incredible world of intrigue and romance that I have become a fan. There are some aspects of paranormal in this particular book that I found a bit outside of my comfort zone, but the book overall was a worthy read.

I read book 2 so knew the background of Branwell and Lucy, but I did not read book 1 where Dante and Claire meet. Reading book 2 prior to this book may help in understanding the plot on a deeper level but isn’t necessary.

I received a copy of this book from iamareader.com. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
