Random on Tour: Las Vegas

Now, you know my mama’s a gambler (sweeper, whatever....), so I guess I got to blame her for a little of this.

When the band got invited to do a big gig here in Las Vegas, I was so excited. Really excited. And when we got here, I was dazzled.

A little too dazzled. I blame the lights and the money and does Vegas pump a scent through the entire town that makes you think you’re a winner, or what?

Because I gambled all our money away. And by “our,” I mean the band’s money. All of it. Every dang cent.

Only no one knows. They’d kill me. So I have to find a way to make all that money back.

I have an idea. I got a good body and a smart mind.

(Quit laughing).

I can do this. I can fix this.

Really.

It’s just gonna get a little weird for a while.

Random on Tour: Las Vegas is the 9th book in Julia Kent’s New York Times bestselling Random series. When the band performs in Vegas, anything goes – including Darla’s dignity and all of the band’s savings. When a savior appears, though, there’s a trade-off for being rescued. A big one. How far is Darla willing to go?

Oh, please. It’s Darla. Like you have to even wonder...

This book is told from the point of view of Darla, Trevor and Joe.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. Since 2013, she has sold more than 2 million books, with 5 New York Times bestsellers and more than 21 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. Her books have been translated into French, German, and Italian, with more titles releasing in the future.

From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire in a rom com).

She also writes romantic suspense as Meli Raine, sexy shifter romances as DJ Jennings, billionaire shifters as half of the author team Diana Seere, and co-authors with Elisa Reed.

She lives in New England with her husband and three children in a household where she is the only person with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls.

One of the funniest books that I've read this year. Darla's antics had me crying with laughter, I had to stop reading a few times to catch my breath. I love the dynamic between Darla, Joe and Trevor which was in this book a little but I would've liked more! Las Vegas was a great setting for this romp, only there can you find the weird and wonderful event that Darla finds. Loved it!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

I re-read some of the series before starting on RaoC on Tour: Las Vegas (which is what I shall be dubbing this - because #RaoCROX), but not all of them - however, I remembered enough that I got every single callback that got mentioned in this installment.

Speaking of which, I believe I'll start there. One of the joys of the Random books is the callbacks. Like little easter eggs (in this case literal eggs) to the readers, it's always a treat to be transported back to a moment from one of the earlier books. #HooHaPhone #Mavis #PurpleShack #Gene #AnFet

RaoC on Tour: Las Vegas Centers mostly on Darla, Trevor, and Joe, although the rest of the gang is there as well. I mean, you can't have a RaoC book without all of the Randomites and their Randomettes!

Darla is busy being the band manager still, and has gotten them a huge break. They're the opening act for a big-ticket artist in Las Vegas. With a couple of bumps in the road leading up to the actual trip - they make it there intact, except that Darla wants to "play the odds" at the roulette table. Seems she has a bit of her mother in her after all. Her gambling doesn't go exactly as planned, which leads to some soul-searching, and finding her way to some fans that might help her get back a little of the cash she lost.

Let's put a pin in that for now...

...and move on to Joe. He's broken the news to his family (his mother mostly) that he doesn't intend to return to law school. He's learned a lot about his parents as well, probably more than he ever wanted to. In RaoC on Tour: Las Vegas he gets another jolt. To say he's left with mixed emotions would be putting it mildly. Joe is a moody one, and I wouldn't have him any other way. He sure loves Darla and Trevor though, and it really shines here.

On to Trevor. Ever the steady compass of their relationship, he's the buoy for most of the book. Near the end however, he learns everything that's gone on behind his back, and feels quite betrayed by Darla and Joe. I would've liked to have read a little empathetic bit on how he understood Joe's pain from feeling "left out" better after this, but I managed to build that narrative myself. I'm sure Trev felt that way - he's good with the empathy.

Throughout the book, there are so many great parts that make the reader chuckle, sigh, cringe (in a good way), and cry. I just utterly loved it. Probably my favorite so far. I love how RaoC hasn't become an "overnight sensation," and hit it big, because I feel like we're watching them grow up. There are a couple of lines via Darla that hit me that way, and they couldn't be more true.

She feels like she's seeing Trev and Joe become men, and it's completely different from anyone else she's let into her life. The arrow isn't far off the mark, Darla. That's how real life is, and when a book evokes real life feelings, you're doing something right.

Five "phone-licking contest" stars.

I have been a fan of Julia Kent since the beginning...she hooked me with her Billionaire series and followed with her Obedience series. I have read every Random book in the series and immediately fell in love with Trevor, Mavis, Darla and Joe! You can read this book as a stand a lone but you would appreciate it so much more if you read the series in order! This book had me laughing so hard that I had tears in my eyes and had to stop reading just to collect myself! This book takes place for the most part in Vegas...we see the entire band and their other halves, Mama and Clive, a mention of Josie and Alex. The band is an opening act for a more famous one, all of which Darla arranged. Darla is fascinated by Vegas which I will say gets her into a little bit of trouble...just a little! I will not give away anything but be prepared to be amazed! I though I saw everything before in the other "Random" books but boy was I surprised! This book has a lot of funny in it, some very tender moments, some "oh boy" moments and some hell yeah moments! I didn't think that I could be surprised any more by these 3 but I honestly was! Julia Kent you have done it once again and I hope there will be more in this series as I look forward to reading them. I want to thank Julia Kent for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book prior to it's release.

I have been so excited for this book! I freaking LOVE Darla! She has gotten me through some rough times in my life and if you haven't read any of the Random books, then you need to start at the beginning, well...you don't really HAVE to and most of these books CAN be read out of order, but this one you need background to enjoy to the fullest. Well, that's my opinion anyway, but if you decide to check this one out, then a guarantee that you will find yourself downloading the rest of the series.

In total Julia fashion she had me laughing so hard that I almost peed my pants, googling things that can't possible be real and shaking my head and saying ho'boy at every Darla moment. Darla is this unfiltered perfection that makes even your worst day better. She always has a lesson to be learned in each book and this lesson is a doozy. You will just have to check out this book to find out all the details, but with things like....booger weight advantage, abundance mentality and of course - BAWK! chicken humor you can't go wrong.

This is a continuation in the Random Acts of Crazy series by Julia Kent. I'd recommend reading them in order. This can be read as a stand-alone book, though a few sentences in the story won't make a lot of sense without the background.

Darla, the manager of Random Acts of Crazy, books the band to be an opening act on the Las Vegas strip. All the girlfriends are going as well. This book is packed with humor and Darla's version of crazy. She is stunned by Sin City and gets herself into a lot of trouble. Watching her get out of it is almost as much fun as getting into it was. The main focus in the story is Darla, Joe and Trevor - each told from their own points of view. They have some sexy times, with deeper emotional connection, that comes from a three year relationship.

There are fun surprises in this book I can guarantee you won't see coming. Get a glass of your favorite beverage, find a comfy chair and dig in. You won't want to stop reading once you start.

For those readers that are considering reading this as your first in this series, I highly recommend that you at least read Book 1 first. It is hilarious, one of the funniest books I have ever read. It's the world's introduction to crazy Darla Jo Jennings, Trevor Connor, and Joe Ross. And Mavis. By the time we get to this book, out trio have matured somewhat over the three subsequent years. So, while this adventure of Darla's was absurd (of course) I didn't think it was wildly funny. (It was better than the Eden book, though.)

I really didn't like Darla's actions in this story, stoned or not. I was debating about a lower rating because of the dishonesty angle. It seemed out of character.

ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
I love Darla + her brand of craziness.
You can never know what is going to come out of her mouth.
This time she is in too deep.
She gamble away all the band's money. You heard me. ( All the money )
Since she is in Vegas, what better placed to win all that money back.
( one way or another )
You will have to read the book to find out what kind of solution Darla came up with.
Super hilarious!
It is a must read!

What’s the most difficult genre to write well? I’d nominate romantic comedy. It’s really tough to create a story that is simultaneously funny and sexy, without pushing the balance so far toward the ludicrous that you lose the heat, or getting so serious about the bedroom interactions that you forget to make people laugh.

Julia Kent’s got this skill down cold. Random on Tour: Las Vegas evoked chuckles on almost every page. At the same time, the erotic scenes between Darla and her two rock star lovers Joe and Trevor never failed to get my juices flowing.

I’ve hosted Ms. Kent many times on my blog, so I’m familiar with her style, but this is the first time I’ve read one of her books. (Looking at her Amazon page, I come to the conclusion that I may be the only person in the universe of which this is true!)

Random on Tour: Las Vegas is part of a series featuring the indie rock band Random Acts of Crazy. In this installment, the band gets a gig in Vegas. All four musicians are excited—after all, this may be the break they’ve been waiting for—but for Darla, the band’s manager, the job has special significance. Having grown up in poverty with her disabled mother, just getting by and making do, she sees Las Vegas as the pinnacle of achievement, something like being admitted to the gates of Heaven. She’s dazzled by the glitter and the glamor, left breathless at the thought of all that money changing hands, based solely on Luck.

Darla’s no dummy. Dealing with all the details for the band, she can be hard-headed, no-nonsense, cold-blooded and organized. Las Vegas blows that side of her totally out the window. Starry-eyed to find herself on the famous Strip, spurred on by a new determination to expect the best from the universe, she finds herself at the roulette table. At first fortune, and her own powers of observation, lead to big wins, but before she knows it, she has gambled away not only her own savings but all the band’s money as well.

Shocked, desperate and wallowing in guilt, Darla hides from her lovers and friends in the first place she can find – at an animal-themed fetish fair. Faced with couples dressed in chicken suits, wandering among booths selling cat-tongue vibrators and fur-tipped butt plugs, Darla has to find a way to recoup the band’s funds – and to live with her own mistake.

My summary doesn’t do justice to the delicious absurdity of this story, or to the intricate emotional interactions among dominant Joe, laid back Trevor and the woman they both adore. This is a highly enjoyable book, a classic romantic comedy with plenty of both titters and titillation.

I have two caveats. First, I felt that Random on Tour: Las Vegas might have relied too much on the reader’s familiarity with previous installments in the series. The numerous references to events in earlier books (including multiple references to the same incidents) sometimes seemed to get in the way of my fully understanding the current story. I can understand that dedicated readers will already know who Mavis is, but I personally believe every book, series or not, should be complete in itself.

Second, I have to say I didn’t quite believe Darla. The gulf between her practical intelligence and her ditziness seemed too wide. She’s clever, snarky, devious, outrageous and hilarious. Somehow I didn’t find it plausible she could also be so dumb.

Of course, I suppose that discrepancy is at the root of the book’s humor. If Darla were less of a Jekyll/Hyde character, the book might not work. It’s hard to know.

In any case, I was able to suspend disbelief enough to have fun reading it.

Julia Kent does it again in a new Random book starring Darla, Trevor and Joe. It took me a long time to read this book but only because I kept stopping to wipe my tears from laughing so much throughout the whole book. I had to read excerpts to my significant other because I was losing it every other page. Darla is.....Darla and if it can happen to a person, it WILL happen to her.

The band is finally finding great success and Darla is the glue that holds everything together. During this journey for the band, however, Darla is also learning to find herself in the mix. She doesn't believe that she deserves anything good that happens to her because people like her usually have to fight so hard to get that happiness and success. Trevor tries to help her with the positive attitude that he always seems to exude and Joe is well....Joe. You never really know what he will do from one minute to the next. Darla screws up and what happens next shows you the strength of both family and her unusual relationship and friends. If Darla thinks she is not successful, she only needs to take a look at the people who surround her to realize she has everything in the palm of her hand. Above all, she has the love of two absolutely different but amazing men, and what could really go wrong with them in her corner.

Yes, you will find yourself looking things up to see if they are real because that is something Julia is really, really good at. Finding the strangest procedures and events known to man. (and yes if you are wondering, there is plenty of reality in this book lol). I laughed and actually shed a tear or two with this book.

Why have I not read any books in this series sooner? I have to go back and finish the previous books still but I am kicking my book whore ass for not having had read these sooner. Random On Tour is a standalone so if you are like me who hasn’t read the previous books yet don’t worry you can still read this one with no issues.

I am keeping this review short and sweet because I want to get reading the other books immediately and I am having a hard time writing this review for some reason. I can’t find those perfect words because I am scared I will give away too much. Sometimes the words flow easily others, like now, I want to have this perfectly worded review that can express exactly what I felt but can’t find the right combination so I am going to go with this. Darla, Joe and Trevor are characters that I loved, that made me want to continue reading and totally made the book as enjoyable as it was. When you start to read this plan on laughing a lot, feeling a lot and just wanting to devour it all in one sitting because once you start you won’t want to put it down that’s for sure.

Wow, there was a lot going on in this book, and I loved every minute of it. Darla is a complicated character because of where and how she was raised, but we've seen her adapt to the different lifestyle she now leads with Trevor and Joe. What makes Julia Kent romantic comedies so good is the depth that she provides each of her characters and how she seamlessly brings them all together to create hilarious, LOL stories! In each installment of her series, she continues to provide more depth by revealing more of her central characters' backgrounds bringing more life to her peripheral characters like Joe's parents, and Darla's mom and stepdad. Julia constantly amazes me with the profound dialogue and thoughts her characters share as they figure things out. I truly understand when she says that her characters are talking to her. I rated this book 4 stars because there was so much going on (maybe because it was Vegas), that at times I thought my head was going to snap off from swinging back and forth so much. In the end, the LOL moments helped me stay attached!

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

When I heard that Julia Kent would be releasing another installment of the Random Series, I was excited. I missed the gang and their antics on the road to musical fame. I don't know how Julia Kent keeps all these crazy characters straight, but I'm glad to see that she is writing about Darla, Trevor, and Joe. If you enjoyed Julia's silly sense of humor in the other installments of the Random series, you will not want to miss this one. Darla is attempting to write and self publish a romance shifter novel, but somehow, in the midst of that, she secures a gig for the band in Las Vegas. Darla is excited to roam in Las Vegas, but Trevor and Joe are going to bed. Darla goes to the casino by herself and finds herself gambling, not only her savings but the band's money, too. Just as she wins $20,000, Darla lets a plastic sugar baby, Victoria, goad her into betting it all and she loses.
Does Darla come clean about her gambling disaster or does one of the guys swoop in and save the day?

Although I absolutely love everything that Julia Kent writes, including this series, I fail to understand why she starts each book in this series (and others books as well) with a short synopsis of what is going to be happening within the story. It really takes away from the plot surprise and direction of the story.

Spoiler....although I read the brief description and knew what was coming, I still can't believe that Darla was thoughtless enough to spend (and lose) the band's entire bank account on the roulette wheel.

Darla seems a little too much at times. And I still get a shiver every time she says, ain't or any other grammatically cringe-worthy language. Did she learn anything about the English language in school? And I can't believe no one within this series hasn't attempted to correct her. Okay, that word and other similar grammatical mistakes does, absolutely, make her sound like she's uneducated "trailer trash". Guess I need to move on.

BTW, this book is a really fun read, just like all her other books. I loved it.

Welcome to the wacky world of Darla! Random on Tour: Las Vegas is the next in the Random Acts of Crazy series and as usual, when it comes to Julia Kent and these guys, there is a lot of fun, hysterical laughter, loving, thought provoking, poignant moments that are described so vividly, you think you are there. There is also, of course, toe-curling, hot sex a la Joe, Trevor and Darla style. To get the main idea of the story, a sheltered mid-western girl from a backwater town, is let loose in Vegas - let the fun begin!! The story is told from the point of view of Trevor, Darla and Joe, who have been in a threesome relationship for three years, and this is shown with emotional bonding and caring that defines their relationship. It is probably best to read the Random books in order as some of the funny one-liners or subtle comments that the friends share relate to previous books. For instance, Amy and the vibrating cellphone in her hoo-haw is just too funny to not know the backstory! And of course, Mavis the Chicken is there.

I have read everyone of the Random books by Julia Kent. As with the other books, this one follows in the same crazy funny, wacky theme. There were many moments in the books that I had to reread scenes from laughing so much and missing my spot. Also, reread just to absorb the actual canniness of this author. I have always wondered about where Julia Kent comes up with the scenes in her book because they are so out there. The words flow so easily off the page and the storyline is so flawlessly smooth. Once you take out the zaniness and examine Julia's writing, it is profoundly descriptive and so literal. Evidence of someone who was an English major (in this case English professor). This book really delves into the depth of the beautiful love and relationship between Darla, Trevor and Joe. Despite all the craziness the bandmates endure with each adventure, the bond between them all is unwavering and unbreakable. I loved this book and highly recommend it!

Julia Kent is amazing!

This is Random On Tour: Las Vegas written by Julia Kent. There are very few authors who can make you as happy as Julia Kent. She knows how to write and pulls you deep into her crazy twisted world. There is no way to read one of her books and not find yourself smiling and even laughing out loud. In this book, we happily find ourselves back with the band Random Acts Of Crazy as they find theirselves going on a tour to Las Vegas. Darla, Joe, Trevor and the band are some of my very favorite book friends. I could totally imagine being friends with them in the real world....but this is the book world, one I can’t imagine not getting the chance to read about over and over. Now I have the strong urge to go back and start over with book one of this series and re-read them all again...something I have already done several times. Do not miss out on the genius that is Julia Kent!! You will be a fan as soon as you try one of her books. Buy them quick!!

Success is within sight for the band as Darla has arranged for them to be an opening act in Vegas until a little too much fun at roulette leaves her looking for a way to recoup her losses.

She has been in a relationship with Joe and Trevor with three years and they couldn’t be more different. Joe is moody and unpredictable while Trevor is the calming force in their threesome but will she try to fix the mess on her own or will she allow her guys to help her out of the situation?

Darla will once again have you laughing out loud while those around you question your sanity as she just has to dig herself deeper until she finally trusts in the love and relationships of both the band and her men. This story shows the growth in both the members and the success of the band and the humor is off the charts.

Pure kooky, sexy entertainment!!

While this is fairly deep into the series, this is my first read of the series. I can tell I am missing some references, but never felt lost or confused by jumping in here.

This group definitely has strong character traits which come across very easily and include interesting extended family dynamics. This makes for an interesting and entertaining read. Also a quick light read. Interestingly enough a “character” in this book – has “published” a PNR story the same day as this release. I’m always entertained when authors have an author in their stories as we see the struggles they go through (perhaps) as they ply their trade. I will pursue this story also as I enjoy Julia Kent’s writing.

Darla and Joe and Trevor are back and I didn't realize how much I missed them! This book is laugh out lout, try not to pee your pants, husband looking at you like you are nuts funny. It is written in a way that it can be read as a standalone, but there is a lot of crazy mentioned that happened in earlier books in the series. If you haven't already read them I predict you will want to after reading this installment. I don't want to leave any spoilers, suffice it to say that this book is full of Darla's special brand of crazy. There are long convoluted stories about her hometown, situations only Darla can find herself in, fun with the band mates, mind altering substances, chickens, kinky sex toy talk, hot sex, gambling (it is Vegas after all) and even emotional growth for Darla. Overall a fun read in a style only Julia Kent can master.

Darla and all the Random guys are back and taking Vegas by storm like only they can! Julia Kent gives us another wonderfully hilarious yet surprisingly touching offering. Told from Darla’s, Trevor’s, and Joe’s point of view, this book delves further into Darla’s complicated psyche and the relationship between these three. Although, you could read this book without having read any of the prior Random books and enjoy it tremendously, there are quite a few areas in the book that harken back to previous books… and really, why wouldn’t you want to read the prior books? Every one of the Random books is funny as hell. You’ll find this book to be irreverent, endearing, intriguing, witty, provocative, and absolutely riveting. I would highly recommend this sweet and sexy book.

As always with Julia Kent books this was 'laugh out loud' funny. I was happily reading (in some rare sunshine ) in the garden when I realised that my neighbours probably thought I'd lost my mind.
It was great meeting up with all the characters again. Without giving anything away, Joe came into his own in this one. The situations that these characters get themselves into cover all emotions. You laugh at their predicaments and cry with them when life sometimes gets the better of them but you are always right there with them hoping for the best.
If you've come across this review without reading any previous books please go look them up.
I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC and voluntarily reviewed. Thank you so much!

She delivers every time!

If you've read Julia Kent before you know everything she writes is awesome, and I mean EVERYTHING!. This series gets better and better, you feel connected to everyone in RAOC; and I say everyone because by now they feel like real people, "my people".
Seeing Big Bold Beautiful Darla so raw and vulnerable was a delightful as well as insightful experience, one that could teach a lot of lessons while laughing your heart out. Not to mention the depth & growth in Joe and how this relationship has been built moment by moment.
Julia Kent allows us the thrill and pleasure of connecting with this group of friends that makes you want to grab life and create Random Acts of Crazy!... for that Julia: Thank you, truly Thank You.

I just didn't like it

I normally love the 'over the top' Random books. They are funny, full of action, and lots of sex. With that being said, this one didn't appeal to me or hold my interest. The way Darla, Joe, and Trevor was portrayed didn't really hold the elements that spoke of love between the trio as the other books did. I felt it put Darla in a rather unflattering light, portraying her as the uneducated country bumpkin that no one respects or gives any mind to...including her mother. That's not how I remember her and her relationships from the other books. The ending itself didn't fit, didn't really solve anything, and ended unexpectedly. Overall, I was disappointed.

This story was hilariously raunchy, as is typical for this series. I always laugh so much when I'm reading them that my husband thinks I'm losing it. The stories are so fun, and the characters are so wonderfully flawed -- I enjoy them all so much, and this one was no exception.

This one did have some serious content (although even much of it was handled in a funny way), because Darla finally realizes that much of her behavior is based on her difficult childhood. She learns that she doesn't always have to respond the way she has learned, and that is a bit traumatic for her. It is sweet how Trevor, Joe, their friends, and even her mother help her with all the hijinks that occur.

Another hilarious bit of Random. Julia Kent's imagination for these characters and their lives is pure gold. One minute I was laughing out loud then soul searching as Darla cried. This story is pure Darla magic. Her goofball antics just make you smile. The band has "made it". They are really something now they've landed a gig opening in Las Vegas. That's how Darla sees it anyway, coming from Ohio. What transpires leading up to show time has you laughing out loud. Joe and Trevor must have the patience of Job. Sweet, sexy with a touch of naughty, another surefire hit!

If you are looking for a laugh out loud, feel good, heartwarming, fantastic adventure with friends that are family than this is the exact story you are looking for. As a long time reader and huge fan of Julia Kent even I was surprised by some of the fun twists and turns in this journey. I love being surprised. This was the first journey in the random series for me and let me tell you loved it and even though is reads perfect as a standalone I now have the overwhelming urge to go back and read the rest of the series from the beginning. Looking forward to it.

I had a problem connecting with the characters. It's the 9th book in the series and the first book I've read. I would highly recommend reading the others first so you can get the back story. That being said the book was a funny story. Darla at times made me think of her as not being able to handle herself then other times she could. She dealt with alot of stuff that went on in this book. Joe and Trevor are pretty funny characters that both love Darla. And there were scenes that i found very amusing and funny. And Joe comes through for her in the end. - By Mandi

I liked the book but there was quite a few times things didn’t make sense and it pulled me out of the story because of issues the editor or a proofreader should’ve caught. Like people talking and then three pages later one of those people walks up to the group. Or a switch in who is talking but it’s not noted so the dialog doesn’t make sense because of who should be talking wouldn’t be referring to that topic or themselves in that way. Otherwise the story is good just minor things that dinged it a star for me.

The band is finally breaking it into the big time!!

The Random crew is traveling to Vegas to open for a successful band but as with any time Darla is involved, there's crazy antics, a little bit of drama, and a ton of laughs. From the very first page, I was laughing hysterically but there were definitely some spots where I was sure I was going to cry. I love Darla, Trevor, and Joe (even though I often feel a little bit of a love/hate for Joe a lot of the time).

If this is your first Random book, it will give you a glimpse into how crazy and fun this series is and make you want to read more. If you already love this series, you'll appreciate all the ups and downs this group experiences. I can't wait to see what's next for RAOC!!
