I have read and enjoyed every book in the Jack Noble series, The First Deception, is no exception. After Jack and Bear's former missions and level of expertise, it was difficult for me to look back at the "rookies" and to take a step backwards, so to speak. They were dire enemies during USMC boot camp and were prematurely pulled from the Corps before graduation to participate in a special ten-week training program for a clandestine organization. It didn't take them long to become fast friends and learn about each other's strengths and weaknesses in the weeks leading up to their successful completion of training.
Their first mission required that they assassinate a US government official and then evade and escape via plans their superiors had arranged. However, it turns out they were set-up by their trainer and had to figure it out for themselves. Their failure would result in life sentences for murder if caught and the agency could not help them. They eventually escaped and returned to the training center for answers, here, the trainer tells them that the mission was a final exam and that they both passed, but now, their trust in their superiors was debatable.
Their real first mission required them to travel to Turkey and Hungary to locate and free a high-level agent who was captured ten days earlier. From that point on, the story evolves into one hell of a tale with many twists and turns, dead-ends, double crossing agents and dead agents turning up along the way. This story is riveting with edge of your seat suspense. Jack and Bear can trust no one or find any support along the way. They were on their own and evidently set-up for failure - Individuals were expecting them to fall like many of the other agents they've encountered so far. For Newbies, they exceeded everyone's expectations, and what they stumbled upon at the end was a jaw dropping discovery for everybody.
Well done, Mr. Ryan. Looking forward to your next installment in the coming months.

I am an avid fan of the Jack Noble series. When I read via L.T. Ryan(author) that he was going to write a book that was going to cover the start of Nobles career, how he met Bear etc. My first concern was the series has already established Noble and Bears character and you really became involved in the series, so what else is there? I remember another author that I really like and he did the same thing, the book was titled the American Assassin. They even made a movie of it(took five years to make/release). The main character in that book is Mitch Rapp, like Jack Noble they trained Assassins. The book American Assassin did nothing for me, it did not give me anymore insight on the characters. It was the only book of Vince Flynn series that I did not like and felt it wasted my time. Getting back to First Deception-I gave it five stars! I loved it because the way it was written , the pace of the story line help developed who Jack and Bear were. The story did fill in more information on how the two became partners in the agency. The author only uses about 25% of the book to tell us how these two came about. The rest of the book delved into new assignments, twists and turns with much humor and "kick butt" action. So I do recommend that if you are a fan of Jack Noble-You must read this, if you have not read any of these books then this is perfect place to start. Enjoy
From the first Jack Noble short story that I read, I knew I wanted to read more of this exciting series. This book starts off so brutal and grueling. I understand they are preparing to be faced with similar challenging situations. but it was still so tough to see what they endured with the training exercises and tasks. Once they began their mysterious mission, there were so many questions I wanted answers to, but all I (and they) seemed to end up with were more questions. It kept me engaged and turning page after page of the story. It was really fantastic. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
So so good! A faced paced thriller much line the Bourne series. I Couldn't put it down until I finished it! Looking forward to more but alas, i have to wait until they are at the library.
The First Deception invites us into the shadowy world of spies, lies, betrayal and double-crosses. It starts off a bit like American Assassin of Mitch Rapp fame, where Bear and Noble are unwilling participants in a secret government training program. Mitch Rapp volunteered, whereas these two didn't. Although they did volunteer for Parris Island & the Marines, so the law is in the gray area there. Probably legal though.
The story shows the undefined relationship intelligence agencies have with the police, suggesting they are no more than puppets. Somewhat troubling. It is a good story, more in the shadows than the light, but I feel it is missing an ingredient. Like it is almost there, but not quite. Well, this is book #1, so I suspect L.T. Ryan will get better with time.
Would be a #1 Best Seller if author was confined to Amazon readers!! (NO Insult to Amazon or author intended!)
I'm not saying this as an insult to Amazon or the author, as I never would of been introduced to this fine author, if I wasn't a member of "Kindle Reader". I also read his EMP Series, extremely well written and realistic!! I just read "The First Deception", the prequel to his Jack Noble series.. Being such an avid reader, I am very glad that I still have several books to read. 🙄 Honestly, I found his books hard to set down, I read into the wee hours of the night (lost some sleep..lol) and luckily was even able to read while a passenger, on a cross country trip! The benefits of a kindle book, over a paperback.. you don't need a book light to read at night while travelling!🖒 Probably my biggest compliment, other than being an excellent writer with knowledge of his subject, and an innate ability to present his background and characters smoothly, is that his books very well "edited", not rushed, compared to a lot of books by digital writers!! A must read by an excellent author.. I also love that his books are longer, not deliberably dragged out, thus getting your moneys worth!! I think a lot of authors who have sequels, deliberately shorten their books so they can make more money. I'm sure a lot of readers would agree with my comment.. Again... A must read whether you have read books by this author or not!! Enjoy!!
This book, and the free prequel, did not do much for me. The lead character is just a smart mouth former jock who can fight and shoot well, while his partner is a big guy with some skills. The storyline was not all that interesting, let alone compelling. The basic theme was "trust no one" although the characters the author spent a lot of time trying to lead the reader to believe were not trustworthy generally ended up being okay. There is also a lot of time spent describing scenery, with special emphasis on bad odors and the color orange, and movements. For a supposed spy novel there is very little intelligence work going on; it's mostly just "follow that guy" stuff. The conclusion was not much of a surprise, with the bad guy being someone who was a minor character at various points in the story.
Also there was a very sloppy, and utterly needless, inconsistency between the prequel and the main story. It pertains to cigarette smoking, of all things. It could have been easily avoided had the author or editor actually re-read the earlier work before finalizing the prequel, which was apparently written 5-6 years after the main story.
Fast paced action returns as we visit the beginning of Jack and “Bear” entering into their new work situation now together. The book has two distinct sections. Starting with their recruitment and training which presents a lot of character development for our two “heroes” and they people they work with. Everyone demonstrates their capabilities and differences. Then there is the mission.
Making their way through a mini mission and then onto the big time, Jack and Bear have to overcome a lot of obstacles from the very start. This shows how resourceful they are. This is a must for survival in their line of work. No one is transparent on how much they be be trusted or not; and to what depth.
This was a pretty eye opening prequel. Learning what Noble and Bear had to go through to become spies. Then finding out that spies tell lies. They are in the field, paranoid, but ready for action. And, there is lots of action to go around. Loved this book.
I read this book as the prequel to the rest of his books and it was the correct way to do it, I am now ready to move on to the next book and start reading that one, it was a thoroughly enjoyable book, it should be read before any of the other books so you get the stories from the beginning and then you know who the characters are and how they became partners. This book does have some violent and extreme scenes in their training but I believe it is to show how these men are trained to a very high standard, so look past that and read the book for what it is and see how the twists and turns turn out differently to what you expect. I loved the book and now am hoping to move on to Noble Beginnings which is the next book on, I am definitely a follower of L.T.Ryan a very exact author and seems to have a great way of writing about operations and operatives, I am really hooked on these books, there are a whole list of his books so I shall have a lovely winter reading on my Kindle and being absorbed into a different world.
The storyline and plot were 4 stars. The writing was basic and a little too simplistic for this genre in my opinion. I found a few gaps in logic but I still enjoyed reading the book. The way parts of the story were written it felt like this book was written over a decade ago and now finally got published after the series has taken off. It seemed less polished than I would have expected for an author who had already published over 15 novels. Also, the lack of technology and other situations described in the story made it seem like this book written way before the 2018 publication date.
There was sufficient action and intrigue to hold my attention although it was no surprise on who was the traitor. The book gives more back story to Jack and Bear which I think will be beneficial as I proceed reading the next book in the series. Overall, it is probably 3.5 stars but I rounded up because it made me interested enough to decide to read Noble Beginnings.
So I liked it for the most part. It was a bit drawn out at the beginning but that’s to be expected with establishing the characters. Being I’m a huge Jack Reacher & James Reece fan this was a fill in for me till my next book of theirs arrives in the mail. (No offense to digital readers, I like a physical book in my hands 😃)I did like it once I got about 1/2 way thru it and will continue the series. If you like spy action type books you will want to read this, give it a chance. Chapters are short which I liked since I read off and on when I get the chance. Make sure you read The Recruit (short story) first, it helps with the character establishment. Sorry I know I really didn’t talk about the book content, I really don’t like to say too much so I don’t spoil anything for others.
Having a physical book in my hands makes me a happy reader 😀.
Jack Noble and Bear Logan are sent to rescue an operative who has been captured in Aleppo, Syria. With few contacts on a mission fraught with danger, they find themselves chasing shadows and following their guts about just who to trust.
When they find the captured agent and she hasn't been tortured as much as expected, they immediately guess that she "sang" for her captors, and she has put others at risk, including themselves. Then, they find the safe house has become a grisly crime scene and the agent once again missing. Jack and Bear find themselves second guessing their handlers, relying on each other as the situation develops. "Conditions on the ground" are dangerous, indeed. #JackNoble #LTRyan
From the confusing but interesting beginning to the final word a can’t put it down book. I am an avid reader who can tell if a book is good from the first chapter. The First Deception is an excellent portrayal of what our military and government can and probably does do to make clandestine guardians of our country. I would love to know both Bear and Nolan personally. Both characters are well thought out . Principled and I bet could be tons of fun at a party. The stories they could tell I can’t wait to read.
With the short story ("Prologue: The Recruit"). Non-stop action and intrigue! Two rough recruits, Jack Noble and "Bear". At odds in BMT but come together against odds ... which gets them removed halfway thru training, not as washouts or for courts martial, but for escalation from the last half of recruit training to advanced training entering the world as government assassins. Wits, skills, and muscle memory help them wend their way thru missions wrought with deception and never quite knowing who is on their side ... or even whose side they're really on.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack Noble and I love reading LT Ryan’s novels but this was a bit of a slog. The first half of the book was an easy read, partly, because I was excited to be reading a new LT Ryan book but also the back story was interesting too. However, the more I delved into the story, the more I lost interest. The new characters that were being introduced lacked substance and I was beginning to lose interest in the plot. Overall, love Jack Noble and Bear but I didn’t love this book.
This is Jack and Bears first assignment after completing their training. This is a prequel of , I might add quite a few excellent, fast paced extremely well written action thrillers. They are employees of a clandestine, government agency. Problem solvers, Assassin's if required. An agent has been kidnapped. There mission, find and rescue. Problem is nothing is as it appears. Misdirection, betrayal at the highest level. An excellent read!!
This was good. Nobel and Bear are strong central characters, with Cribbs and Steele as strong secondary characters. Lots of intrigue and action with plenty of dead bodies left in the wake.
Occasionally the story became laborious with extensive detail but overall, an engaging and interesting read. The ending was rather abrupt; just summarize and ended.
A very intense spy thriller. Jack and Bear are sent on their first major rescue. Very entertaining and fast moving story loaded with action and lots of misdirection keeping the reader alert and addicted to the read. Great action and suspense. Fantastic introduction into a very addictive and entertaining adventure
This is a well-written thriller about how Jack Noble and his friend Bear got trained into a secret division of CIA.......and what they went through was unbelievable. Amazingly they survived and were sent into their first case. You will hold your breath wondering if they can solve the case they are in and most importantly, will they survive????
There is enough action to appeal to the action readers and the storyline is fine. I am sure L.T. Ryan is a good writer. The problem is me for since I was born there has been war of one variety or threat of war and frankly in the twilight of my life I am just plain sick of it. This series is probably a good one just not for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
From raw Marine recruits on opposite paths to Special Ops partners in training battling to stay alive to a killing pair of Assassins wending their way through one deadly Middle East firefight after another to an Eastern European shootout...Gripping and Intriguing!
This my first L.T Ryan book! And I am overwelmed!,, Jack and Bear are perfect partners, Thr plot was diversified It kept me on my toes The sequences that describes the training had me exhausted, and Crib was a fantastic characterThe story took me in many places and they with danger to my adopted partners. I am looking forward to all the Noble adventures.
CIA training at "The Farm". Is it possible it could be so down and dirty? Maybe so, maybe not,but makes for an interesting story. And the 'training' doesn't stop when Jack and Bear leave The Farm. Seems like everything is a test of some sort. I did make it through ALL Parts 1, 2 and 3, though it's a pretty lengthy trek.
A very good foundation for the early days of Noble and Bear's training and friendship.
This is a fast paced read with twists and turns that cause the reader to constantly wonder who the "good guys" are. I like how Mr Ryan moves the story line from chapter to chapter causing me to keep on reading.
I am excited to move to the next book in the series.
I like to read a series in order. Just finished "Thin Line" when I became aware of the prequel. Wish I'd read it and the recruit first. I liked this "origin" story. Recommend it as a starting point for all new Jack Noble readers. Looking forward to the, as of this date, 10 additional Noble stories. Many other series, novellas and one offs by LT Ryan... It's a journey.
I love these guys. There's something brilliant and bumbling in everything they do. They are quite a team. I appreciate the pace of the book. I read well when I am anxious to know what's coming. Sometimes, I see the endings, other times, I do not. On to the next in the series! Thanks for giving me that so I don't have to search for it!
First book I've read from this author and I thought it was written pretty well and kept my interest up throughout. Some very good characters and a fairly good story line, although like most books with these unbelievable main characters with super human abilities. All and,all a pretty good read.
Never having read one of these books, I wanted to start the series. But do I start at the first written Nobel book or the later written prequel? I chose the prequel and enjoyed it. I will say I felt like if you read other books first you would have known more about the side characters. But it was fast paced and entertaining. I will keep going with the series.
