Once Bitten . . .

One minute Leigh is walking home in the early hours of the morning, and the next a vampire is sinking his teeth into her neck. Turns out it was a rogue vampire marked for termination, but it does Leigh little good because the damage's already been done. She's become one of them.

Lucian Argeneau, hunter of rogue vampires, has been alive for over two thousand years, and there's very little to excite him anymore. Food has become tasteless, sex is ordinary. Then Leigh drops into his life. Suddenly he finds himself craving coffee . . . and imagining the sassy brunette atop the black satin sheets on his nice big bed. It's Lucian's job now to enlighten Leigh on the inner workings of being immortal . . . and tutoring her is igniting a fire in him that hasn't burned in centuries.

But until they stop a renegade bloodsucker from destroying the human race, passion will have to wait!

One of my very favorite things in books is when something or someone not human is trying to "human". If it's written correctly, it will always be funny and endearing. This story did a good job with it. Lucian is over 2,000 years old and really has no idea. He lost his humanity so long ago that he doesn't even know it's gone. Well... doesn't care. If not giving a shit was money, he'd be a billionaire. Wait, that's not my favorite analogy. Money is fine, but still. Okay, if not giving a shit was chocolate, he'd be my favorite person ever.

mmmm.... chocolate....

Lucian gets stuck taking care of a newbie vampire, Leigh, and he treats her like an unwanted red-headed step-child at first. He literally puts in ear plugs while she is screaming in pain so that he'll be more comfortable. He also tries to feed her dog food because he has no idea that people won't eat it. It's food, right? In other words, he's a heartless bastard.

I like him.

The problem is that Leigh likes Lucian and he starts to like her too. It's like his heart grew three sizes that day, ala Grinch.
Well... something grew.

“Are you talking to my penis?” Lucian asked with disbelief.
“It talked to me first,” she said defensively, and frowned. “You didn’t mention this little skill.”
Lucian decided she must be joking and laughed. “So, what did it say?”
“It said, ‘Lucian? Lucian, are you there?’” He blinked.
“Why would it say that?”
“I don’t know. It’s your penis.”
That’s when he recalled the cell phone in his pocket.

Modern women.... we'll anthropomorphize everything. (Look it up)
It's not like men do that. They never name their penis. That would be weird.

The Penis Name Book A Guide to Naming Man's Best Friend by David Rosenthal
The Penis Name Book: A Guide to Naming Man's Best Friend

That's right. There are even name books for the peen. This book has a 4.5 rating here on goodreads.
Obviously, this is serious business. Also, just remember when you are thinking of writing a book and wonder if you could ever get published: someone published this.

Anyway, enough penis talk. I can't believe you guys are making me talk about something so embarrassing!

This book was one of the better ones of the series. There were plenty of laughs and both of the main characters were likable.

Lucien Argeneau

The following ratings are out of 5:

Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎

The heroine: Leigh - she is a bar owner and comes across one of her employees who has not shown up for work for a few days. She knew he had a crush on her, but when he corners her with another guy who then bites her, she knows she is in trouble.

The Hero(es): Lucien - He is one of the oldest immortals, having been born in Atlantis from a mother who was given the nano’s to heal her when she was carrying him and his twin brother Jean Claude. He had a life mate and children who died when Atlantis fell.

The Story: Lucien and his team are after a rogue immortal named Morgan who is creating a family of immortals and telling them they are vampires, cursed without a soul and they must stay out of sunlight and feed on humans. Leigh’s coworker was turned by Morgan and wants Leigh to be his and asks Morgan to turn her as well.

Leigh nearly escapes from Morgan, but runs into Lucien and his team of enforcers. The enforcers know Leigh because they have gone to her bar to eat all week and they talk Lucien into helping her since she hasn’t bitten a human yet. Lucien is an old immortal so he is grouchy and grumbles about it but agrees.

I really enjoy the way these old immortals are. At some point, mostly everything gets boring to them after thousands of years. They stop eating food altogether, though immortals can eat regular food since they are not dead. They stop having sex because even that gets boring and get grouchy like a crotchety old man.

However, when they find a life mate, they start to get interested in things again. They start to hunger for things other than blood. Lucien is hilarious this way since he hasn’t eaten since a wedding he attended long ago (that of Alexander the Great) and even only did so then to be polite. So his first tastes of food and drinks of the current time is pretty good and his firsts of other things after so long are hot and steamy.

There are of course side stories about the rogue vampires and Leigh being a contemporary woman isn’t too swift to accept that she and Lucien belong together forever. Leigh has had bad experiences in the past, not counting being bitten and abducted and is not quite ready or willing to settle down.

The narration was fine. I take a point off due to there being only one Narrator. I like having dual narration and I think that even if a book is told in a single POV, they can still do dual narration because there is always things he says and things she says so I don’t see an issue there.

This story centres on Lucian, the twin brother of Jean-Claude, Marguerite's deceased husband (making Lucian the uncle of Lucern etc.). He's one of the "original" immortals, and has lived for over two thousand years. He's on the Council and hunts down rogue vampires. It's while he's on the hunt for another ancient vampire, Morgan, who has started his own "nest", that he encounters Leigh. Morgan has just turned her but she hasn't yet gone through the painful process when Lucian grudgingly rescues her.

He's not happy about it, though. He tries to dump her on Margeurite but she's off to Europe, leaving him at her home in Toronto with her massive mastiff Julius. He can't get any of his relatives to help him except to offer advice he doesn't want to hear, and it doesn't help that they all think Leigh is his life mate and he hasn't been laid since Alexander the Great's wedding.

And on top of all that, Morgan's coming for Leigh.

This is more serious in tone than some of the others in this series, but it still has moments of making me laugh out loud. Lucian, the sexy beast, is now my favourite Argeneau vampire, and I will quite happily be re-reading this one!

This is the sixth book in the super-long Argeneau series of paranormal romances, in each of which--as I understand--a vampire meets his/her life mate and does so in circumstances that yield varying levels of humor. A quick comment from the Argeneaus--don't say "vampire" and "human." Say "immortal" and "mortal." I stand corrected. After all, every book in this series gets an extra half star from me for the author's brilliant idea about the beings that disrespectful people call vampires. What makes the Argeneaus so nice? Nanobots! Or, as in this book, bionanos.

The origin of vam--I mean, immortals is shifted from fantasy, myth, you name it, to science fiction. Specifically, as Lucian Argeneau explains here to his newly turned life mate Leigh Gerard, a combination of nanotechnology and bioengineering in the extremely advanced science of Atlantis before the catastrophe that sank it into the sea. The self-replicating bionanos were injected into people for quick healing of injury and disease, but surprise! The nanos combat aging, treating it as a disease (I agree), making the recipient immortal (except for death by fire or decapitation).

The only drawback? You guessed it--the nanos need blood, so the immortals on Atlantis had to have transfusions, which of course were no longer available after Atlantis fell. So this book provides a new explanation of those other "vampire" traits that the surviving immortals developed: very, very quick evolution on the part of the nanos to secure their blood supply. Fangs, of course, but also mind control, so that immortals could get blood easily from the primitive barbarians who lived beyond where Atlantis used to be (and we're never told where that was, though logically it would have sunk into the Atlantic Ocean, wouldn't it?).

Well, after that valuable world-building update, how does Lucian find Leigh? He's one of the survivors from Atlantis, born in 1534 B.C., and his wife and children died when Atlantis crashed. In his grief he shut himself off emotionally and remained single for more than three thousand years. Over that time he became an important figure on the immortal council, creating and enforcing laws that bind immortals. To prevent immortal overpopulation, they can only turn one person during their lifetime, and they can have only one child in every century. And in modern times, with blood banks, no more biting of mortals unless it's an emergency!

An immortal who violates these and other laws is a rogue, and rogues must be killed quickly before they do too much damage. Lucian leads a team of five immortals from Toronto to Kansas City to find a rogue named Morgan, who is rapidly controlling and turning mortals to build up an army. Morgan's latest conquest is Leigh, owner of Coco's restaurant and bar, through his new vassal Tommy, who's infatuated with her and thought they could be together forever as immortals.

Tommy thought he was going to turn Leigh, but Morgan took over and did the deed. Of all his victims, though, Leigh was the only one he couldn't control completely, and that motivates the rest of his story. A wild action scene ends with Morgan and Tommy escaping while Lucian brings Leigh home to Toronto to be cared for during the painful process of turning immortal, as the nanos take over her body.

I've covered the part of the story that's revealed in the blurb, which tells us that Lucian becomes Leigh's tutor, quite against his will as it turns out; he was delivering her to his sister-in-law Marguerite, but Marguerite's house was empty. She had just left for Europe to take on a new job. So Lucian's team goes after Morgan and Tommy while Lucian, Leigh, and Marguerite's wonderful huge mastiff Julius stay in her house in (or near) Toronto for the hellish turning process.

Lucian has become quite used to getting his own way over the centuries, and his solitary commanding personality sets up some remarkably effective physical comedy. It was like revisiting slapstick films from the 1920s as Lucian makes one mistake after another. He hasn't tasted food for two thousand years, but as the blurb tells us the life mate connection with Leigh reawakens his delight in tasty food and drink, which other immortals routinely enjoy.

And he hasn't enjoyed sex for even longer, not since he lost his wife on Atlantis I think, and it isn't clear to me just how celibate he's been. Anyway, that gets reawakened too, in two major scenes with minutely graphic detail from both points of view; those scenes do advance the plot, though I found myself skimming them to catch the embedded plot points.

No spoilers here, but as usual in this series there will be danger--and the funniest scene of all happens immediately after the final combat. If you've already read this book, I think you know what I'm referring to. All romantic misunderstandings should be like that one!

Speaking of that, it's a romance that mostly avoids the tired old plot devices; there's a small misunderstanding on Leigh's part but it's resolved fairly soon. A few of the familiar characters come on scene, especially Bastien who functions as the primary fixer of problems. Highly recommended!

So at this point I think I can safely wash my hands off this series.

I think I've read. . . five. . . yup five.

But now this feels like another one of those stand-alone series where if you've read one you've read them all. Don't get me wrong it's not badly written and the characters are always endearing but they seem pretty interchangeable now. . .

So I read this cause Addie H's review showed up on my wall and it has all these wonderful excerpts and well, I just couldn't resist. Plus Jilly loved it and that's all the thought I need to put in that decision.

It was a good way to pass the time. I wish all the characters loads of happiness and say Goodbye. Though I might drop by to read Thomas's story cause I know how terribly he's waiting to meet his mate. :)

(Update: Well now, what do you know. Turns out I've already read Thomas's book. Way back in 2014. And yup, you guessed it, no clue what happened.) Guess it really is for the best that I stop now :p

I am re-reading all my 5 star rated romance novels. There are 60 on my shelf. This is book 20.

(Tropes: Starched (hero) Gets Unstarched)

This is how my 20th re-read held up.

description

I remember loving the Lynsay Sands vampire series. In fact, it was my introduction to vampire romance, a genre I wasn’t really aware existed. But re-reading the favorite of the series did not hold up. Maybe I’m more cynical than I was 10 years ago, read too many romance novels, because this book now was too cutesy for me. Entertaining sure but made me feel very little, and I found myself skimming several parts.

Downgrading my original review from a 5 to a 3.

Nonetheless, the star of this book is Lucien, and him alone makes this book worth the read.

**********
- Over the last couple of years, he’d watched his niece and nephews find their own life mates, and he’d been happy for them. He’d also been envious, yearning for someone of his own again. He’d had a life mate once before in Atlantis but had lost her during the fall. Part of him was excited at the idea of finally having someone to share the passing years with. But another part was anxious, reluctant to love and—possibly—lose again.
**********

Quick plot: Walking home late one night, Leigh is bitten by a rogue vampire, and before she knows it she is turning. Lucien Arganou, the oldest (years not looks), grumpiest, weary-of-life vampire about, finds himself having to look after Leigh while she accommodates to vampire life.

description

- “Can’t you do something for her?” his nephew finally asked, when several moments passed and her screaming and thrashing didn’t stop.
“I already have. I didn’t kill her,” Lucian said dryly.

- “Bring the luggage in, Thomas,” Lucian ordered with a frown as he approached the front.
“What about the girl?” Thomas asked with irritation.
“That’s what I meant.” Lucian stepped through the open front doors of the house.

description

- “You’re a great big marshmallow under all that bluster and crust.”
Lucian’s eyes widened in horror at this accusation, his mouth working but nothing coming out as he sought for some response strong enough to express his dismay at her altered opinion of him. A marshmallow? He wasn’t a damned marshmallow! He was cold, and mean and hard enough to do what had to be done when others faltered. He was a damned warrior, had slain both mortal and immortal down through the ages with sword, knife, mace, spear, lance—
“I think we’d better go now,” Etienne said, eyeing his uncle warily as he took Rachel’s elbow to lead her quickly up the hall.

description

- “Can I help you?”
“Yes,” Lucian said tersely. “I need books.”
Carl’s mouth tipped with amusement. “That’s what we sell. What kind?”
Lucian hesitated, suddenly embarrassed, then recalled his boast to Rachel that he’d lived too long to be afraid of anyone or anything. Time to prove that. Straightening his shoulders, he said, “Books on how to get girls.”

description

- “I am a hardass,” Lucian said coldly, as if they had openly disputed it.
“What is it?” Thomas asked.
Much to Lucian’s surprise, Rachel hesitated, then shoved the books back in the bag and shook her head. “Never mind.”
“Oh, no way!” Thomas rushed forward and snatched the bag from her. Pulling out the first book, he gave a little whoop of amusement, then read, “The Art of Seduction!”
Lucian struggled to keep his face expressionless, but inside he felt about two inches tall.
Thomas tossed the book on the desk with the others Rachel had pulled out, retrieved the other one and said, “And the last one is... How to Satisfy Her Every Time.”
Thomas’s voice had slowed and become less amused and more quiet with each word. When he closed his mouth, the room fell into a complete and uncomfortable silence. No one seemed to want to look at anyone else.
“It has been a while,” Lucian said finally, his voice stiff as he broke the silence.
“And you want to please her,” Greg said quietly as he crossed the room. He took the book from Thomas and returned it to the bag. “That’s understandable.”
“Yeah,” Etienne echoed.
“I think it’s sweet.” Lissianna patted his shoulder.
“You should be who you are, not act like some book says you should.”
“But what if she doesn’t like who I am?” Lucian asked with frustration.
Silence filled the room and they all stared at him wide-eyed.
“She’s going to love you, Uncle Lucian,” Lissianna said quietly, moving to his side to rub his back, as if she thought he needed soothing.

Cute... but a bit boring... again

I thought I should clean my soul after so many OTT harlequins and read something fluffy.

But this one was maybe too fluffy? The conflicts were all very superficial. It's really all about the cute MCs getting to know each other and falling in love.

That's not a bad thing.

↬ The hero is thousands of years old and he's lost his ability to enjoy life. He behaves like an asshole at the beginning but eventually turns into this awkwardly adorable golden retriever.

↬ The heroine comes with some baggage but her positive outlook on life made her a very likable.

↬ There are cute moments, awkward moments, steamy moments and even action.

But at the end of the day, mood is a powerful ingredient and I wasn't too into this one. I just needed a stronger conflict or maybe deeper emotions.

I originally thought about giving it 3 ★ but the more fair rating would be 4 ★.

Lucian is over 2,000 years old and really has no idea. Lucian is such a tough guy but to see his character being completely lost with how to perform simple everyday tasks was endearing. There is not a lot of action to this story as it is most focused on the relationship between Lucian and Leigh. As far as a PNR goes this is a very sweet, romantic, and funny story. I love Lucian and Leigh as a couple. One, because Lucian turned out to be the marshmallow Rachell called him, of course after trying to dump the poor woman on everyone he could get his hands on. Two, Leigh wasn't the snippy crying woman you'd expect a newly turned and almost rogue vampire to be. As she is always described, she was the peaceful self all along. I love Lucian! He seems like such a tough guy from others POV and he starts out really tough. He falls for Leigh and it's hilarious. Both characters are pretty funny. In this story Lucian Argeneau meets his match in a bar owner from Kansas. The whole family gets involved to get him his HEA. Except Marguerite who is surprising absent, but in her one cameo does manage to try to play matchmaker over the phone... she just can't help herself. The story opens with Leigh Gerard walking home from work at about 5:00 in the morning. Lucian is one crusty character. Leigh was much to easy on him but as the book goes on he becomes much more human and the message that a lifemate can make a leopard change his spots came through loud and clear. I look for to his appreances in further books. I am started to warm up to LS's style of writing but admit to finding them a slow start.

One of my very favorite things in books is when something or someone is not human is trying to be "human". If it's written correctly, it will always be funny and endearing. This story did a good job with it. This book had me laughing out loud. When you read the books in this series, there are no great surprises, but they do offer and light hearted pnr story. Ahhhhhh. I had a hard time putting this down. I was doing the "I will just read to the end of the chapter and then I will go clean my bathroom." and then I got to the end of the chapter and immediatly started the next chapter.

3-3.5 stars

This is my first book by this author. Plus it is the 6th book in the series. I did not feel like I missed a lot by not reading the prior books.

The book was funny, but at times I felt it was trying too hard to be funny and sacrificing the character traits of the Hero (especially) in that effort. Making him at times appear to be a bumbling idiot when he was really supposed to be some badass vampire hunter.

Overall it was enjoyable enough that I am going to try another later book in the Series.

Safety gang safe but there is another minor trigger for a couple of people

If you've read through the first 5 books of this Series then you know that Lucian is.. well.. a grump to say the least. He is one of the oldest immortals and he is hanging on by a thread from turning Rogue like so many before him.

Lucian is out hunting, hunting rogue vampires that is, when Leigh is thrown into his lap. Leigh is a bar owner who just happens to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time and has hired the wrong type of employees.

The combination of the two is just incredibly funny. Lucian this big old bad ass all of a sudden in charge of handling Leighs change WITHOUT the assistance of anyone. His orginal plan was to dump her into Marguerites lap. Upon his arrival he quickly finds not only is Marguerite unavailable but every other member of the family is unvailable.

There are some really hilarious scenes in this book. It was one of the funniest books of the series to date.

Yeesh. 2.5 stars for me.

What I liked:
- the humor. I thought there were some really genuinely funny moments throughout the book. The author had a great voice and knew how to embarrass her characters.
- that the story featured one of my favourite romance tropes: grumpy old immortal has hard exterior chipped away at by the love of his life, and then jk he's actually a softy.

What I didn't like:
- the fact that about two thirds of the whole book was basically a giant info-dump about this world's vampires, how nanos make them perfect, and Atlantis. It went on FOREVER after Leigh finally stopped changing.
- the fact that the Big Bad was defeated in like three pages of the climax starting.
- yeah, mostly just the insane amount of info-dumping. It kind of works for someone who hasn't read the other books in the series (like me -- but even I got tired of it), but it must have been mindnumbingly boring if you've read the first five books and know the lore already

Basically, this book felt like filler to me. I liked Lucian and Leigh, but I didn't feel like I had enough time to see them develop as a couple, and this was in a full. length. book. So, yeah. Bit of a shoulder-shrugger for me. I WOULD be interested in reading more from the series, provided all the info-dumping isn't something that happens in every book.

While this book was not my favorite book of the series I found that if you can manage to make it past about 10 or 15% of the book it does quickly redeem itself. I did love seeing the uber strict and straight as an arrow, Immortal Enforcer Lucian, get his comeuppance when he meets his second life mate and he has to help her while she makes the change.

It was a good story but as I said the first part was a bit boring in that it was all about Leighs change and how it affected Lucian.

The rest of the book is typical of Ms Sands in that the bulk of the story is on these two learning about each others foibles, the Immortal learning to live in the 'human' world again and realizing that just because one lives many hundreds of centuries, doesn't make them perfect. It was fun seeing the stick-up-the-butt Lucian coming to terms with the fact that Leigh is his life-mate, re-learning to eat, and finding his sense of humor again. He was an extremely well-written character, and even though this is fiction you can almost beleive that he is just a real and regular guy. I appreciated the fact that Leigh was one of the more easy going women in this series and excepted her fate without much angst.

All in all a good but not great addition to the series.

My favorite from Lynsay Sands' vampire romance series. I just loved the hero! A vampire who is REALLY old, never thought that he'd find love, let alone with a pretty newly turned vamp!

~ 3.5 stars ~

Two thousand year old Lucian Argeneau has lost any sense of passion in his life. When his job as a rogue vampire hunter ends up forcing him to guide newly turned vampire Leigh through the ins and outs of being a vampire, his growing passion for her makes him see life in a completely new light.

I will say until about the half way point I was not super enthralled by this story, but once Lucien started having development, and I got to see his self consciousness and lack of confidence, I was immediately rooting for him. It was nice to see Leigh’s development too after going through a past abusive marriage (though her development was very rushed and unrealistic). This was definitely a romance about two people finding each other and growing together, which always leaves you feeling happy in the end. This series so far has had its ups and downs, and I’d consider this one a high.

I've read the entire Argeneau series but this is the first one I read and my favorite. I'm not real fond of vampire stories usually but the vampires here are not the undead kind so okay.

Another reason I went ahead and read it the first time is that it starts out in the Kansas City area where I live. Even though the KC geography is pretty wonky and full of mistakes it still gives me an affection for the book. For example if you just say Kansas City then you mean Kansas City, Missouri not Kansas City, Kansas. The major city is in MO. If you're talking about the smaller spill over city in Kansas, locals say Kansas City, Kansas or KCK to differentiate. And if you're walking from downtown KC (and downtown is always assumed to mean the Missouri city unless another city is specifically specified) then you're not going to walk to Kansas since you'd have a long walk across the Kaw river on one of the interstate bridges. There are a few other geographical mistakes but enough about that.

I really liked Lucien. I found his character to be charming since I always like alpha guys who are unsure of themselves around the woman they fall for. He wants very much to do right by her. The heroine, Leigh, is a very strong character who takes her new situation in stride rather than freaking out. Great secondary characters and solid plot. Funny in places. Light hearted in most. Not full of angst and anguish. Well written.

Very good series that I recommend to all my bookstore customers.

No joke - I read the first two chapters to get a feel for who the characters were and what the story was, then flipped to the end and read the last 5 or 6 chapters to get the resolution. I read nothing in between, and didn't feel like I'd missed a thing.

These books are really fluffy and predictable. If you like your books a little lighter and more on the fun/funny side (think chick-lit with vampires), then these books are for you. But I prefer something a little darker, with a bit more substance, more "bite" if you will (pun intended.)

still couldn't put this book down. Still loved it as much as the first time I read it!

OMG I couldn't put this book down. I had stop stop practically everything else so I could read this.
The book consumed me!!!! Then again most of the books in this series are awesome
Man Lucian really was a hard ass. I have been reading this series all out of order. So I loved being able to go back and see the "old" Lucian.
I just can't say enough good things about this book

Yes,yes I know it's one of 'those' books but it was really good and it really was good at keeping me waiting nervously and anxiously,I could almost feel what the characters had felt except for at 'those' points....I'm not one for 'that' genre but it was a vampire book and it was really good.My friend Jen recommended it too me so I think you may enjoy it as well.

I adore, Lucian Argeneau, hunter of rogue vampires, and his abrasive personality. Lucian lost his lifemate, and daughters when the destruction of Atlantis happen. A thousand, and more years later, Lucian get's a second chance at love, and having a modern day lifemate. It was so nice to see Lucian, and Liv find there way to each other.

This books followed Lucien. He seems like such a tough guy from others POV and he starts out really tough. He falls for Leigh and it's hilarious. Both characters are pretty funny. Lucien does not know how to be human and Leigh doesn't know how to be immortal. Their misunderstanding are fun to read.

Oh dear Lord.. It was so funny!!! I was chuckling every few pages! I love grouchy Lucian. He's hilarious! I think grouchy men have the best one liners... LOL!

The best part was at the end of chapter 19... The part where Leigh was talking to Lucian's penis.. Too funny!!!

Lucian! Lucian! Lucian! ❤ ❤ ❤ He is my favorite grumpy old immortal! I loved reading his story! Watching this ancient one getting struck with cupid's arrows is enjoyable! Leigh is just perfect for Lucian.

Leigh Gerard is the owner of Coco's Restaurant and Bar. She is walking home around five o'clock in the morning when an employee (Donny), who has missed several days of work, steps in front of her. Next thing she knows is she is being bitten on the neck by the man who sneaked up behind her. The man behind her is Morgan, an ancient vampire and a rogue marked for termination by the Council. Donny (the employee) has a crush on Leigh and has made plans to spend eternity with her, Morgan sees Leigh as under his control to fill his ranks of rogue vampires. What Morgan doesn't count on is Leigh's strong mind.

Lucian Argeneau is a member of the Council and the leader of a team who terminates rogue vampires. His team has been sent out to destroy Morgan and his nest of rogue vampires. What Lucian doesn't count on is Leigh. The team members convince Lucian to spare Leigh's life because she hasn't bitten any mortals. When a disagreement over who will oversee Leigh's turning into an immortal lead to an argument, Lucian tells them he will take Leigh to his sister-in-law in Toronto, Canada, for her to watch over Leigh during the turn. When Lucian arrives at his sister-in-law's home, he finds her packed and preparing to drive down her driveway to make her flight. Lucian has no other choice but to oversee Leigh's turning.

In his over two thousand years of living, Lucian has always been the unspoken head of the Argeneau family. He is used to delegating tasks to others. Now none of his family is there to help him with Leigh's turning into an immortal. Lucian has also grown weary of life and is grumpy. His interest in food and sex waned around the era of Alexander the Great. Leigh lights fire in his blood spurring his interest in life and his interest in food and sex. When he discovers he can't read Leigh, Lucian considers he has found another life mate (His first family died during the fall of Atlantis). Leigh, however, is not a trusting person. Can Lucian gain her trust and her heart?

This is the sixth Paranormal Romance novel in the Argeneau series. The way it is written it seems as if Lynsay Sands wrote it as a standalone. She has Lucian explain the world building in detail to Leigh. All of which readers of the series do not need to rehash if they have been reading the series in order. The characterization is well developed with both its mortal and immortal flaws. There is humor, especially with the sister-in-law's large mastiff Julius, whom Lucian ends up taking care of along with helping Leigh recover. The plot is a romance. The subplot is tracking down, capturing and destroying the ancient immortal, Morgan, along with his nest of rogue vampires. The dialogue is serious yet humorous. The narrator Rick Robertson did a fair job of using inflections to differentiate between the characters' voices. The descriptions are not as strong as they have been in previous novels. It is there, but not intrusive. Bite Me If You Can is a serious yet humorous novel. I feel readers of the series will enjoy getting to know Lucian and Leigh. Adult situations and language.
