For it to have been the second book I would have liked for the MC's to show more growth. As individuals as well as a couple. I don't get Liam and Thompson's relationship at all. I truly don't understand their attraction to one another. The chemistry between the two of them is non-existent. Them being together makes no sense. This book wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't good either. It just felt so... underdeveloped.

You know that feeling when you aren't ready to let the past go? In this case it's the past that won't leave Liam alone. A past in the form of Steven Pine, the big bad from the first book. It seems like putting him behind bars didn't equal neutralising the threat the powerful, and very deadly, psychic signified. Liam is convinced of Pine's involvement in the latest killing of college girls. Thompson on the other hand is sceptic - no one can be in two places at once.

Like with the first book, I wished this one to be longer, to have been developed a bit more. Both in terms of Liam and Thompson's relationship that while it's moving forward I wanted something more. The mystery aspect was interesting but superficial. It was all there and had a lot of potential for something really good, but it was all in passing. I wanted more depth. I wanted to become more invested, to feel, but I never did. At least not to the extent that I would have liked.

I believe Kale Williams did try to bring this book to life, but he can't bring something to life when it's just not there. I can't say that there's a particular moment or character that stands out in his narration that I can tell you about. I will say that he has a great pacing and intonation. I love how he changes intensity with what's going on in the book, it draws you in like nothing else can.

After finishing this story I'm left with this unfinished feeling. I don't feel like anything was really resolved, there was no real closure. I hope that will change with the next book (if there will be one that is).

Ooooh, well I just loved this one! I love the little moments between Liam and Thompson, and how they are really trying to get their relationship worked out and commit to each other.

The mystery was great in this one as well, but honestly I was mostly rooting for Liam and Thompson, to really figure things out and solidify their relationship. There is still a great blend of the mystery/cop thriller/paranormal element mixed into this as well! I still would love to get something from Thompson's POV, but I found that the flow of this one was even better than the first, probably since I knew what was going on when I first started the story.

Anyway, I really hope we'll get another story with them. I would like to read about Liam meeting Thompson's family, about how things will go with them living together, if there is any pushback from the police department now that they are in a committed relationship, and of course - surely Pine will think up something else to do!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Very enjoyable series. I like the chemistry between the main characters, it's a unique relationship and it's always nice to read something different. Plus it's a cool psychic murder mystery.

Audio by Kale Williams who does a marvelous job.

I liked this one but not as much as the first book, because the mystery left much to be desired. I mean, it was pretty obvious what was going on from the beginning almost, and those two, while they felt there was something 'off' about the suspect, never delved deeper in it until it was too late :( But it's great seeing those two together and I look forward to a next book.

Re-read - Frustrating, has potential but so poorly developed. There's no detecting they rely soley on Liam's powers ignoring obvious questions. Some of the people they're questioning are part of a suicide provention/survivors group - but there's no counsellor at hand, or any proffesional input, or even query about why!
There did seem a little more focus on the victims than in the previous but the link to the first was so forgettable I have no idea it's significance.
Thompson's lack of name BUGS ME BIG TIME - I mean they meet his brother and Liam calls him Thomspon even then! Does Liam even know Thompson's first name? He [Thompson] says it once at 83% that's once it's used in two books! If they do -meet the family- is Liam going to still be using his surname only? And that info dump of Liam's family was a big shoehorned in WTF.

Also - the cover creeps me out that smile has to be photoshopped - and no idea who it is, actually don't know what any character looks like.
-- --
It's an enjoyable read; I like the concept, the characters and the writing; yet the book overall is simply 'okay' frustratingly close to being really good. There's just so much left out and undeveloped, I felt this should be a longer story and I wanted more from it.

We still have no idea if Liam is paid by the police, here he seems less a dependant and more an active part of investigating - but his exact role isn't explained. They seem quick to reveal his powers and visions to everyone, but no idea if/how he's paid or employed otherwise.

The relationship has progressed though they're still feeling their way - but Will is still there like a sceptre and I would have liked to sense more attraction to the current love. Not helped by Thompson beng 'Thompson' throughout when we're reading Liam's pov! If Thomplson hated his first name, if there was a joke there, then maybe? but it's weirdly formal - though unlike the first book his first name is given; once, at 70something%.

Thought the relationship was more central than the mystery plot, which made it disappointing we don't get to learn more of the characters. I guessed it almost immediately but that doesn't have to be a flaw, there's no real urgency or sense of threat about it but there's enough to ground the story.

As stated, I enjoyed it while reading and would like to rate it high, but the end left me unsatisfied, there's little to make the characters matter and remain memorable. If there's another book I'll wait for reviews before buying.

You have no control over how you feel or who you love. I know that. - Kimball Thompson

I will preface this ramble by saying that The Psychic Detective Mysteries is a true series, reading book one is essential to understanding what is going on in book two. Shadow's Return picks up a couple of months after Shadow's Edge. Liam and Thompson's complicated relationship is expanded upon rather than introduced. It is expected you know who Denny is, and Liam's reaction to him and the cases that are being worked are linked are connected as well.

There are some gorgeous scenes. Jeff, Thompson's younger brother and matchmaker from the previous book goes out for dinner with Thompson and Liam. Jeff ends up in over his head in a conversation with Liam because we get to see drunk Liam is way funnier (for a reader) than he has any right to be. On another note I really love the idea of Will forever and always being Liam and Thompson's elephant in the room, he causes so many issues for them. What we still don't know is how long Liam and Will were together, aside from many years. These are really good characters, they are complicated and I like that we don't have whole backstories for them.

I feel it needs to be noted having read Shadow's Edge and Shadow's Return on consecutive nights that there is a degree of formulaic writing involved in the casework. These are not detective mysteries or paranormal mysteries. They are too predictable for that. I really don't know how to classify them. They are enjoyable, I love the characters but it's not a character or plot driven book. It seems to just exist and I'm compelled to read it, maybe just to see if I am right in my assumptions. I'm giving this four stars. I can't justify five for writing that feels formulaic and something that is this predictable.

Side note: Shadow's Return isn't exactly sex-positive. It does a bit of kink shaming which annoyed me more than it usually dies. Though in all fairness in this instance it wasn't consensual play in this event (and Liam owns his vanilla sex life). There is nothing wrong with the kink itself if it's consensual on both sides (play safe lovelies)

“How can you blame me for the rambling shit I might say when I’m sound asleep?”... “Come on, Thompson. You’re not like this. You’re not insecure or jealous.”
... “I am with you, Liam. And I hate it.”
... “You don’t need to be. You know how I feel about you.”
“I thought I did.”
“Wow.”

Shadow’s Return (Psychic Detective Mysteries, 2)
By S.C. Wynne
Published by the author, 2018
Four stars

S.C. Wynne’s Liam Baker is a fascinating character. Vulnerable and smart, his psychic abilities allow him to speak to the spirits of murder victims—but that doesn’t mean they’re particularly helpful.

Working with homicide detective Kimball Thompson, known only as Thompson throughout this book, Liam begins to see a disturbing pattern in a series of murders. Gradually he and Thompson come to the realization that their worst nightmare is true.

The killing is somewhat less gruesome in this book; but the mysterious nature of the murders makes the story gripping, as does Wynne’s skill as a writer. There is a slow, creeping chill to this narrative, as Wynne builds the story and gradually reveals his punchline. It’s enough to raise goosebumps, for sure.

The evolving relationship between Liam and Thompson is at the center of the story, without in any way detracting from it. For all his gift at reading people and talking to ghosts, Liam can’t usually read the man he has grown to love. Both men realize that they have to learn to communicate the normal way. By talking. Even when he’s not confronting the confusing and angry ghosts who are part of his gift, Liam has other kinds of demons to cope with. Thompson is right there to help him.

I am pretty well hooked on this series, for all its low-key emotions.

“Shadow’s Return” by S.C. Wynne is another exciting story involving remarkable psychic Liam Baker, whose relationship with Detective Kimball Thompson is evolving. Their partnership has deepened on both the personal and professional level but the new strain that has appeared is worsened by the lack of communication between them. A horrific series of murders involving college students embroils Liam in a nightmare that he has trouble convincing Thompson of the truth of what he is seeing. The question is whether their relationship will survive all of the challenges it is facing or will their enemy destroy everything.

I love stories that explore psychic phenomena and this one has a intriguing twist. The chilling idea of being able to communicate with the recently (and not-so-recently) dead and the great asset it would be for homicide investigators is a fascinating concept to explore, and I think the author did a great job of penning another enthralling tale. I like the fact that neither guy is perfect, which leads to misunderstandings, but that they make the effort to work at improving their relationship. This story ties in with the preceding one in the series but can be read as a stand-alone—although I think one would savor it more if the first one is read. I liked that the escalation in the threat to Liam was accompanied by assistance from an unlikely source and I definitely hope there will be more stories in this series as I can’t wait to find out what other scenarios are percolating in this author’s fertile imagination!

This book had me on the edge of seat, I couldn’t put it down. The story is fast-paced, full of complex characters, and a rollercoaster of emotions. The author crafted a story that deftly weaved many plot elements together. This can easily be read as a stand-alone, though I think might be enjoyed more by reading the series in order. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Still no answers to my questions from Book 1. Seriously, I had to look at the blurb of the book to find out what Thompson's first name was.

Beyond that, though, the mystery part just seemed really obvious, making it all the more frustrating when all was revealed and our heroes just kept sputtering about how it couldn't be possible, there was just no way, yadda yadda yadda.

Sigh. Another series I won't be continuing.

A good mystery but not very realistic police procedure-wise. Main characters are a civilian psychic and a detective. The psychic has way too much leeway as the cop with suspects and evidence to make this story believable. Liam Baker, the psychic spends eight to ten hours every day at the cop shop with Kimball Thompson, the detective reviewing evidence, autopsy reports etc. This just feels unrealistic to this reader. And this is more a romance than a novel about a serial killer, a psychic and a cop. And did I mention that both main characters are gay making the story very, very angsty.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

You need to read the first book in the series for this book to make sense (think of it as Part 2 of the first book).

A lot of my issues with the first book continued with this book. There needed to be more background to the story, more depth with the characters, and a better flow. The mystery itself was not bad (even if I did figure it out very early on). I just felt like the story would have felt more complete with more details. I feel like there is the potential for another story if it is willing to delve into the connections between the MCs (not just the sex, but the more emotional connections and what initially built them). William is still such a shadow between the MCs, but still such a mystery, so he becomes more of a distraction than an actual plot point.

One thing I found especially odd is Thompson talks about Liam's visions always have a connection to the case they are working. Liam only seems to work with Thompson (in fact avoids the other cops, as they avoid him). Is this Liam's on job (and by extension source of income)? Because if it is, than that PD's consultants must be very well paid. It also seemed odd that Thompson doesn't have another case he needs to at least check on.

My thoughts: I give it ❤❤ A lot of my issues with the first book in the series continued with this book. There needed to be more background to the story, more depth with the characters, and a better flow. The mystery itself was not bad (even if I did figure it out very early on). I just felt like the story would have felt more complete with more background regarding Will. He seems to be such an important part of their story but I don’t know who he was, how he died, how Thompson and Will became such good friends and why Thompson didn’t tell Liam he loved him sooner, etc. Will is still such a shadow between the MCs, but still such a mystery, so he becomes more of a distraction than an actual plot point.

I feel like there is the potential for another story if it is willing to delve into the connections between the MCs. Not just the sex, but the more emotional connections and what initially built them.

This was entertaining and worthy 2nd novel, both in the personal relationship, and in their professions, while trying to solve the murders. It fell down a little for me in the climactic scene. I think at this stage of Liam's ability with his psychic power, and Thompson's ability as a puzzle-solver, it shouldn't have taken them so long to put it together. Particularly when... Well. You should read it, then we'll talk. :) Maybe you will disagree and find it good.

This is my 2nd read, but apparently never left a review the first time. I remember being turned off by the fact that Thompson was insecure about Liam only having space in his heart for the love of his deceased partner, but it makes sense.

I think this is one of those instances where I just didn't feel like dealing with book drama, so I dipped. I wasn't in the mood. This book is actually good, though.

Rating (All ratings use a Scale of 1-5) =
I don't always write reviews for 4 star reviews; +/- one star means a high majority would find it at least an average read.

Like the 1st, this was a 3.5 star read for me that was easily bumped up to 4 stars for the engagement / entertainment value. But, there were some things that deserve a mention for anyone deciding on whether or not to read it.

Blurb = 3 stars, unlike the first one, I did not feel anything was missing fun the blurb.

My Genre Scale = 4

Odds if not your genre = 2, though good, there is nothing that really lifts it above the genre intended.

Development of: = Rating this area is tricky for this book. Basically, the development was just enough it never effected the flow for me.
*World = 2.5 not given a lot about psychics in this world at all - types, origins, roles, or how viewed or handled in the world at large.
*Characters = 3 stars, there is some growth for both characters and as a couple.
*Plot = 3 this was solid. Nothing vital left out and engaging for this type of story. But it was the bare bones minimum needed. For those that need more details and explanations, this might not be the story for you.

What stood out (taking in consideration I've completed over 2000 m/m books) = The entire scene when Liam meets Thompson's brother. Thompson's acceptance and reaction was the absolute best. That made it really stand out.

Mood Type : Appeal to those looking for... (and /or those who should avoid)
This is not what I would describe as a mystery. It's more like how was it done not who. I also feel there was a little more emphasis on the relationship side of the story intertwined and less procedural. There is sex, but it is not the focus. It flows well, questions are answered, and relationship progresses. More entertaining than mind puzzle etc...

Warnings = None

HFN/HEA = A definite HFN

Series Notes = This is the 2nd of 4 as of May 2022
*Reading on? Yes
*Reading back to back? Yes
*Can be easily read without the previous? This is definitely more of a continuation than a stand alone. There is enough background given, a laid back reader might not feel lost but a ton of context and texture would be missing.

Rating Notes = (SubPlots, thoughts, etc... )
I covered pretty much all my thoughts in the above. I was pleasantly surprised by how deeply engaged I stayed. I am an avid watcher of the % complete on my Kindle even when enjoying a book. I rarely checked while reading this one, which was also true for the first one. It's nice to be surprised. For a laid back reader that enjoys this genre, I would definitely recommend it.

***************
Below is my philosophy on reviewing!
***************
1. I try to take into account and note common pet peeves noted by other readers
2. "Brain candy' does not necessarily carry a negative connotation. (What is brain candy? Publishing industry 's version of pop music - Typically: formulaic, from a prolific author published often and quickly (like monthly), things escalate fast, and are often solved easily etc..) It has its uses: to pass time when tired, on the beach, etc... The problem comes when "brain candy" is unexpected or even disguised.
3. Why rate the blurbs? :
Like many readers, I do not like to think I'm reading one kind of story; just to end up with another. But...I also don't think a book should be docked stars for being as stated. If I don't like stories about "_________", and I choose to read it; I shouldn't give it 2 stars based JUST on my preferences. Unless... it wasn't clear in the blurb.
4. Other Factors that effect my perspective when reviewing:
Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio for m/m. I read at least 100+ books a year - with an average length of 220± pages. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2022) was a 3.60 average for 1715 books. Which considering, one should be better at picking out books the more one reads, I feel is an accurate average. I have over 800 reviews within the m/m genre here on Goodreads.
5. I'm really confused by reviews that consist of just 2 to 3 sentences - with no explanation or evidence. I'm even more baffled when it receives "likes". I'm unsure of how it is useful to others on whether or not to pick a book, for example: "It was a fun read". Umm okay... What made it fun? For that matter, what do you define as fun? Do not even get me started on people who have rated over a 1000 books with a 4.99 rating average. How is that helpful? And there's is absolutely no way that every book is above average great / 5 star read. Why even bother to rate books?
6. I am not a writer nor a wordsmith, but I am a passionate reader. I joined the m/m group years ago, but I mostly lurk. I like to ask questions, debate, and quite possibly play Devil's advocate - which is hard to do online, with unknown people - to whom you are also an unknown- and no body language is available to convey intent. Plus, true debates seems to be a lost art form where respect and even friendliness can be shown between those with fundamentally different opinions.

~ 4.5 Stars ~

“Two girls dead in two days was bad … Things weren’t going to get easier from here.”

At the end of Shadow’s Edge, book one in the Psychic Detective Mysteries series, psychic Liam Baker and LAPD homicide detective Kimball Thompson busted a psychopath and took a big step in their relationship. Shadow’s Return picks up the thread of their story two months later, still feeling each other out, still weathering a few bumps, and on top of that, now tackling a duo of fresh murders on a college campus. And, as seems par for the storytelling course, author S.C. Wynne pulls out all the thrilling stops to build a suspenseful mystery alongside the romantic evolution of Liam and Thompson’s relationship.

The goal of these short novels is clear-cut: to offer readers maximum enjoyment in an economy of words, and they succeed most impressively on that front. Both installments in the series (neither a standalone) can be devoured in just a few hours, and in that time, readers get to play amateur sleuth, puzzling through the crimes as well as the question of how Liam and Thompson are going to move on from the single most devastating loss that brought them together and yet remains the one thing that stands as an obstacle between them.

The extrasensory angle in the story looms large for both Liam and the killer, and with few cogent clues, in the way their psychic connection ups the ante in a high stakes game of cat and mouse to discover the killer’s identity. There are some real ‘gasp, no way!’ moments that I loved as the killer threatens again in a way I didn’t anticipate. It all came together in such an enticing way as to hook me for the next book in the series before I’d finished this one.

I love chewing on some excellent discourse, so sharp dialogue is yet another bonus I can add to this series’ list of accomplishments. There isn’t a single insignificant conversation, which serves to advances the narrative at a robust and exciting pace. Seeing where Liam and Thompson go from here, both at home and in the crime solving biz, is something I’m anticipating in a big way.

4.5 stars - Shadow's Return is the second book in the Psychic Detective Mysteries series and comes with a warning that you should read the first book, Shadow's Edge. So much is set up in the first book, in addition to our meeting the main characters, Liam Baker and Detective Kimball Thompson, who work as partners in a collaboration to solve homicides. Liam is a psychic who sees dead people and often has visions of the recently deceased that they both use to solve the crime.

This book begins a few months after they solved a serial killer case and after almost dying by his hand. That close call brought out their feelings for each other, so we see them now at the beginning of an intimate partnership. The change in their circumstances and a new spate of killings bring doubts and questions about both their relationship and their work. In between finding out who is killing vulnerable college kids, they are trying to answer questions on who they are to each other and whether these cases are truly related to their previous one.

Doubts and insecurities make their relationship shaky despite their hot sexual connection and make it more important than ever to communicate. We see them as they work through their issues and commit to one another. I especially like the scene when they are out to dinner with Det. Thompson's brother. It goes so horribly wrong but shows why their relationship will likely survive, at least as long as they do.

Lies, mistruths, and omissions encountered during the investigation make their job harder and make it more difficult to see the answer in time. It all culminates in an unbelievable showdown, which does not end in a cliffhanger but does leave room (hopefully) for more in the series.

I was given a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 Stars!!!

Shadow's Return is book 2 in the Psychic Detective Mysteries series and it needs to be read in order.

Psychic Liam Baker and Police Detective Kimball Thompson are all in their relationship, but there are still some things that might dampen their newly found bliss, including the latest serial killer that has appeared on their radar and that has some eerie similarities to Steven Pine, who is still locked up.

I love Liam, he's so self-deprecating that you just can't help liking him and Thompson, despite acting a bit off-character in some instances (understandably so, at least once he finally started talking), is his perfect counterpart. They fit well together and support each other, both while they're working and on a more personal level. It was interesting seeing levelheaded Thompson a bit rattled by his feelings or rather by Liam's feelings and his insecurity over Liam being able to get past loving Will. I really liked that the issue was dealt with in such a mature way, even if it took them some time to get past the 'should I say something or not' phase. I really like seeing the two of them together, though, I think they have great chemistry and while they're a work in progress, I hope there'll be more books in the series to see their relationship progress further.

As for the case they were working on, I loved it. It was interesting and had me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see how it would play out.

Overall, Shadow's Return was a great addition to the series and I hope this isn't the last we'll see of Liam and Thompson. So, please more, Ms. Wynne?

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, I suspected that I would because the whole psychic working with the police trope is one of my favourites. The first book was the story of how Liam and Thompson came together. In that book they declare their love for one another, whilst battling a brutal serial killer.

Now some people reckon that this can be read as a standalone, but I have to disagree. There's quite an overlap between the two books. The MCs are still in a relationship, but are still struggling with trust issues.

The two are once again investigating a ruthless serial killer. Liam has his suspicions about who the killer is, Thompson totally disagrees, which causes additional tension in their already strained relationship.

I enjoyed this one as much as the first book. Both MCs are well written, Liam and Thompson obvious love one another, but both are vulnerable and unaware of the depth of each other's feelings.

Book two doubled up on the intensity and was full of twists and turns. I look forward to the third book to see where the story will take Liam and Thompson, and how their relationship will develop.

Love me some Liam and Thompson working and loving together! Highly recommend!

Steamy encounters, gruesome murders and combining the talents of a great cop and a caring psychic create a wonderful read! I love that we got to see Liam and Thompson again and see how their relationship is progressing. i loved that they have such an intense love and yet are subject to the same insecurities as the rest of us.

Well written, i love the way the story unfolds and how work and love are interwoven in this story. Murders were believable and the suspect pool was interesting. Really creative approach to explaining the bad guy's involvement and it gave me chills. i found this really engaging and read way too late because i had to find out the who, what and why of these crimes.

There were some really special moments in this story and you will love how Liam and Thompson work together with his brother, other cops and each other. I know that i will not be alone in wanting more of these two in the future!

I was gifted this book from the author and freely give my review

History repeats itself. People have habits.

When events in life and death repeat repeatedly and similarly more than once, even cops can sometimes recognize a pattern. But psychics (or psi chics) are challenged by unlikely coincidences and and unexpected clues that do not fit the puzzle, it is important to concentrate on the important stuff like meeting the family and moving in together.

The past provides reference points and strained relationships as change stretches the feelings and previous loves cuts the current love with questions and fears. Ghosts from the past reappear to hover around the killers present and past, physically or spiritually, visible or remaining in the shadows. Wedding rings or clunky necklaces, fresh blood or stored, the first vial will recall the victim as well as the jailed beast.

Sleep is optional if ever without dreams. Police reports are inevitable even if no one believes the psychic evidence when physical presence is unavailable. Good thing Liam is available.

Having read the Dr. Maxwell Thornton series, I thought I'd give this one a try.

In spite of the continual misuse of "Hone-in" meaning "to sharpen" for "home-in" meaning "to focus on something," and the incorrect use of some personal pronouns, this is an enjoyable read. Though it's shorter than I'd personally have liked, giving it the appearance of a serial rather than a novel (the ending seemed skimmed-over and felt rushed and as if there should have been another, more emotional scene before the ending), I enjoyed the characterizations and the plot. The insecurities of both men, who work well as a team but still can't communicate in private works well, and Pine is a great villain.

It's good to see the psychic more or less accepted and believed for a change, even if most of his colleagues still avoid him because he's "weird."

Looking forward to the next one and hoping it goes into a little more detail, as Thompson and Liam's relationship progresses. Also hoping the series won't end with Pine finally gets his.

If you loved Shadow's Edge, you will love this one too. Be aware the series doesn't work well as standalones.

The author has done a wonderful job with the story as it is as engrossing as it was book 1. With a plot full of action and mayhem, Liam and Thompson have their hands full with a killer wreaking havoc if while they are trying to figure out their newly-found relationship.

I loved this book so much. I couldn' put it down, the mystery kept me awake until I had to finish it. I also loved how Liam and Thompson's relationship goes, even with its ups and and downs it's obvious they are they can count one another and that their feelings run deep. Seeing them working together like in the previous book shows how well suited to each other are.

I'm excited about this series all over again and can't wait for book 3.
