It is an era of sudden change and upheaval in Rokugan. Mortal schemes, natural calamities, and celestial turmoil alike have disrupted the political, military, and spiritual equilibrium of the land. Long-simmering rivalries and fresh betrayals ripple through the courts and on the battlefield. The Chrysanthemum Throne is beset by threats from without and within, and the honor of the seven Great Clans—the families descended from the heroes of legend and sworn to rule their lands in the Emperor’s name—shall be put to the test.

I was drawn into the world of the Legend of the Five Rings by the role-playing game, but by that point the lore was so rich and convoluted it was difficult to follow. With the de-facto reset of canon by FFG's acquisition of the property, I figured it was a good time to get into it.

And I wasn't disappointed. These were excellent stories that perfectly captured the atmosphere, tone, and weight of L5R, at least in my layman's opinion. Each clan was lovingly represented, showcasing their complex identities in a way that was both tense and entertaining. I particularly liked Ree Soesbee's "Curved Blades" and Marie Brennan's "In the Garden of Lies" and "To the South." (Though the latter two are just the first parts to longer tales.)

All in all, a worthwhile read. I'm just surprised these were released in conjunction with the card game rather than the RPG—but that will come in time.
