Corsairs #3

Enticed By The Corsair

Rate this book
No one likes a rebellious captive.

I learned that the hard way. I’ve been abducted from earth and cruelly tormented for my fighting spirit until I learned that the only thing that would keep me safe is to be sweet and calm and agreeable. It’s what keeps me alive.

When I’m rescued by space pirates, they tell me I’m safe. I’m told I can be myself again, get as angry as I want, laugh and cry and scream all I need. I don’t believe them, of course. I certainly don’t believe Alyvos, the ‘muscle’ of the pirate ship. Everyone says that he likes nothing more than a good fight, but to me, he’s kind and protective. How can I fear someone who holds me tenderly through the night and has fuzzy skin?

But my pirate wants more from me than I’m ready to give. He wants my fiery spirit…and I’m not sure it’s there anymore.

Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

God, I didn’t expect this when I started the 3rd book in the series!

It deals with very dark and brutal themes. A bit of a departure from the lighter vibe that the others have. The tone does improve around halfway through the book but I still can’t shake the memory of the atrocities that were depicted earlier on.

Regardless of all that, I feel like not many can write those kinds of things in a short romance book, make it readable and make it good. Like I said it took me by surprise, I almost stopped right at the start because I could not handle it, it had me in tears, it wasn’t heartbreaking, it was nightmarish what that girl went through.

We usually want stories about people that go through tough situations >b>but not too tough. We also want everything to be patched up and glossed over by the end of it, as if it didn’t happen or as if the repercussions of the situations the characters go through don’t stay with them.. because otherwise how can there be a HEA.

I am glad this book is different in that regard. We have a horrific thing that happened to our main female lead and severe psychological and physical trauma. There are life altering circumstances beyond what I have already mentioned but at the same time we get a good romance story and there is a feel good vibe to the whole thing by the end of it (maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration but the heaviness that was initially there was tempered down in a very natural way). I feel like if not for anything else, this book should be praised for being able to make a situation so horrible, the beginning of a love story and a journey of healing.

Fun fact - this is the 12th book I've read this year by Ruby Dixon. Insert shocked face here. But is it really that shocking? I think everyone knows by now that I am addicted to her brilliant storytelling. I have actually given up on trying to hide that I am a huge fan of hers. #noshame

The Lovesick Fool has taken in another human! Alyvos, and the rest of the crew, were trying to overtake another ship for their loot when he stumbles across his mate - Iris. She was being held in a tiny crate in the cargo bay after being left in eternal darkness. Alyvos knew he couldn't leave her there, so he scooped her up and brought her aboard. It seems like these blue aliens are suckers for damsels in distress. He's determined to bring back her fiery spirit that lays right underneath the surface. He'll wait for it for as long as it takes.

To keep myself from gushing about RD, I will cut to the chase. This book was just as great as the other two - maybe even a little better. You can always count on Ruby to deliver a wonderfully sweet paranormal romance. If my memory serves me right, there is still one or two crew members that haven't found their HEA so expect more of these in the future!

The muscle and the broken!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: ☹️🙃😍
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The Hero: Alyvos - he is the muscle of the crew on the Lovesick Fool (a.k.a. Dancing Fool). He is also the one that is always grumpy and likes to relieve his stress by getting in fights, especially when they go to a wild space station. They were at a station and a couple of aliens were bragging about guns they are hauling and speaking loudly about how interested they are in human females. So they decide to relieve the aliens of their goods and have a great plan to do so by luring the fools using one of the human females (Cat from In the Corsair’s Bed).

The heroine: Iris - she was taken captive from Earth by aliens that are sadistic and cruel. They liked to maim and terrify their captives. They have taken her eyes, half a finger, a toe and carved into her flesh. She was kept in a cage and starved, while all the other humans in cages were torn apart piece by piece until she was the only human left.

The Story: Alyvos was quite put out at first when Fran and then later Cat joined their crew, but he has recently come around to their value on ship and likes both of the human females. They enact their plan to take over the alien spaceship, but soon after being led away by the aliens, Cat reaches the guys on a com stating that they need to come get her right away, because she was put in a cage in the dark cargo bay and she is smelling a lot of rotting flesh around her.

I like that Alyvos was so grumpy in the first two books, but is so kind to Iris when he rescues her. He had PTSD and couldn’t get over the things he saw during the war and the conditions where he found Iris were similar to things he experienced in the war. He wanted to torture the aliens that hurt Iris so badly and killed the rest of the humans on board the ship. He not so patiently waited for Iris to fix her broken parts.

This book is told in dual points of view via dual narration and is narrated by Hollie Jackson and Mason Lloyd like the first two books in this series. I like both of these narrators a lot and they do so well with alien romance. Mason has a deep, manly voice and Hollie has a soft emotive voice, both are very pleasant.

Iris and Alyvos

Alyvos is the ‘muscle’ of the pirate ship which is still called the Lovesick Fool and which now has 6 members. Cat of course became part of the crew and she is so much in love with Tarekh. So, when they need her as a bait in one of their missions, she will go gladly. Too bad that she will be thrown at a cargo bay that it will wake her worst fears and memories as a slave. It will be like a slaughterhouse full of dead human tortured girls.

From this place only Iris will be found alive and not without external and internal scars.

Iris will be Alyvos' best chance of being happy again and grateful to life. She will fill his empty space inside his soul and she will mend his sorrowful heart. And Alyvos will be her warrior, her safety anchor, her whole world. Iris may never be able to go back to Earth, but she has found a new family.

Very dark story especially in the beginning. Maybe it is the darkest I have read so far by Ruby Dixon. Later on the story finds its own predictable smutty self with a revenge battle somewhere towards the end.

Oh and the book cover contains spoilers! I loved that scene between Alyvos and Iris :)

Again with the horribly abused heroine trope? This was just way too heavy of a set-up to be resolved in a simple romance novel. Like her eyes were gouged out? Wtf! And they found her in some sort of serial killer slaughterhouse? Jesus!

At a certain point trauma goes beyond being an interest premise for a romance into just being downright disturbing.

Also, UGH.

All in all, way too effed up subject matter for a cutesy novella.

It was way heavier and darker than expected. But I rolled with it and boy, was I not disappointed. This author can seriously write anything, because the way she manages her character development is quite awesome.

This books was about abduction and torture, about hot and protective aliens, who are devoted to their human women; but also about healing and finding yourself again.

It was good.

Welcome aboard the space ship Lovesick Fool. It contains a small crew of ruthless pirates looking to make their fortune. Well kinda. They’re definitely pirates, however the ruthlessness is a little iffy, especially when faced with a human woman in distress.

Alvyos loves to fight, and when he sees the Iris and the horrible abuse she’s suffered at the hands of slavers he just wants to protect her. And kill the man who ordered her eyes to be torn out. However, what he wants more is for Iris to stop hiding behind her wall of obedience and let the fiery woman come back out. Iris knows that to survive she needs to be as submissive and obedient as possible, something that goes against her nature, but she learned her lesson when they ripped her eyes out. But Alvyos says she’s free and he seems to want to provoke her temper.

This one was so sad! Poor Iris, although all the heroines have gone through harrowing experiences, Iris’ treatment goes to another level. Most of the book shows Iris settling into the ship and deciding whether or not she’s safe…and how she feels about Alvyos. Alyvos is a prickly character, completely different from the gentle Tarek and the fun loving Kivian. But when it comes to finding the woman they’re destined to love he’s exactly the same. He wants to protect her and he wants her to feel safe enough that her real character can come out.

As always with Ruby Dixon, this was a short but entertaining and sexy read. It wasn’t quite as light hearted and funny as the other two books in the series, but the love story was just as romantic. I know can’t wait to see the last single male Sentorr, the uptight and buttoned up mechanic find his HEA.

Another good book in the series. This one wasn’t my favourite but I enjoyed the romance and getting glimpses of the previous couples in the series. Bring on the next book!

This was probably the best book out of the series. I still think the series are pretty short, BUT if you want a quick Audio listen then this is for you. I am now liking short / novellas on audio because you get your fix in a quick book.

This is Iris and Alyvos story.

I like Iris the best because she is a wounded captive. She was blinded and mutilated to be kept in line. Alyvos discovers and rescues Iris.

I like a good damsel in distress storyline. Iris is a good little slave. She doesn’t fight back and always complies because she is afraid of getting hurt again. You really do feel for her and she makes the book.

Alyvos is the muscle man and fights. He doesn’t have any real talent but I love how protective he is of Iris. It’s cute to listen to their relationship bloom.

I do think the book can be smuttier, well I think the whole series can be somewhat more smutty.

The female and male narrator are fine. I can’t really pin-point anything that would upset me. I think the male narrator’s voice could be deeper and I think the female’s narrator’s voice could be higher pitch but that is my preference and style of listening.

Another cute and short story!
I felt really bad for the heroine! After that she's always very polite and inconspicuous, trying to disappear, trying not to be noted... I felt really sorry for her...

I loved how the hero, Alyvos, one of the pirates who solves everything with fistfights, was so gentle with her!

There's no action here, but just gentle wooing and a lot of patience from an until then very unpatient man.

Ruby always delivers!

Pirates (who are sweet, gentle lovers to their mates)! These Mesakkah are powerful and protective when they love. And they love their human mates.

The heroine, Iris, is rescued from horrible conditions. She has been 'conditioned' to be totally docile and still. She has been rescued by the bad-assed muscle of this band of pirates. He's the one that kicks ass.

This is a story of horrible abuse, heartache, and renewed faith. You so want the low lives that hurt Iris to pay and pay dearly for what they have done.

This is Iris's story. She teaches that somethings are more important than revenge. It will make you angry and sad and then you will smile.

I loved her story. And her hero...

This Corsair series keeps getting better and better. I swear. Just when I think I found my new favorite, Ruby throws yet another perfect fucking blue alien our way and then I'm done for.

Alyvos.
description
I just want to snuggle with him and caress his blue skin and twirl his tail (even if he isn't fuzzy like a bunny and lacks a cotton-tail).

He was super sweet and although we already know how caring he can be (just look at what he put up with the other fools on this fools ship) he has a pretty dramatic past. Every blue alien I've had the pleasure of meeting had some sort of inner turmoil. Something that gave them all a pretty rough exterior (and it doesn't have to just do with those protective "plates") but I think his past in particular really gave him that hard edge that he had even around Iris.

Which, speaking of Iris. It was really interesting to read from the POV of a blind character. We vaguely get to know what Alyvos looked like from the other characters in previous books but in this one, we rely strictly on what Iris feels and smells. It was quite different but in a good way. Also, because of her lack of sight, things aren't so rushed when it comes to their relationship. The sexual tension was OFF THE CHARTS.

And when we finally got that eagerly-awaited smut. IT WAS PERFECT. Hot. Sexy. Interesting.

WORTH the wait for this a million stars.

P.S EVERY woman in both this series and the Ice Planet series have ALL suffered something awful, but Iris' story actually had me incredibly sad and sickened. For those reasons her pairing with Alyvos was written beautifully and made me feel so incredibly happy for her.

I liked the first 70% or so of Enticed by the Corsair, but I didn't like the end at all.

The story felt rushed. Iris and Alyvos have very little chemistry with each other, which makes sense because they're both still dealing with their issues (especially the heroine). They don't seem like they are healed enough to be in a relationship by the end.

Iris really bugged me towards the end of the book. She tends to hit Alyvos when she's mad (like punches to the face). She does everything in her power to stop the crew from helping other abused women. Both of these things happened towards the end of the book. I sympathize with her issues, but I think that she took some things too far.

I'll still continue the series, of course. And I still love Ruby Dixon's books.

This was sooooo good 🥺 During one of The Lovesick Fool's missions, Alyvos encounters Iris, a human woman, who was captured as a slave and who's been physically tortured in such a horrific way that I can't even bring myself to describe it. It sickens me to even think about it 😔

As expected, Iris ends up being Alyvos's mate. I really enjoyed their dynamic together. For a so-called hot-tempered dude, Alyvos was incredibly sweet and patient with Iris. At the same time, Alyvos was blunt with Iris, as he slowly but steadily pushed her to allow herself to feel and show emotions. After what Iris had gone through, she was traumatized and bottled everything inside as a coping and defense mechanism. So it takes time for her to fully realize that she's finally safe and free to be herself.

The romance is a slow burn with good payoff. There is a good build up of tension, chemistry, and emotional intimacy before Alyvos and Iris get together in the physical sense. At that point, they had already fallen in love with each other and Iris had finally accepted that she's safe with Alyvos.

Overall, a great addition to the Corsairs series. I'm super excited to read Sentorr's book!!

P.S. Zero gravity shenanigans 🛸

Alyvos and Iris were so sweet together! This is the 3rd book in the Corsairs series, which is a fun, fast-paced, alien space pirate series from Ruby Dixon. All the books in this series are quick, novella-length and so good. Alyvos finds Iris, who has been abused and taught that being docile is the only way she should be. She has even lost her eyes from those who owned her before. Iris has a lot more trauma to overcome and I liked seeing her find comfort and safety with Alyvos. I liked seeing her open up slowly and start enjoying her work/tasks on the ship.

I’ve been binging the series back to back, so I do think they have a lot of the same broad strokes/formulaic for each book (the human heroines needing time getting used to the ship after being enslaved, falling for one another over time, surprised over the spurs, etc), but they’re still a fun time! All the audios are on hoopla!

Ruby never disappoints, this is another Corsair instalment. Four pirates on a space ship stealing and pillaging their way around the galaxy. They're going to need a bigger space ship if they keep rescuing human damsels! Alyvos stumbles across Iris who has been kept captive on a ship during one of their missions to take a shipment of guns from their adversaries.
Iris has endured horrific abuse by the hands of the szzt and when Alyvos finds her captive, malnuorished & putrid it stirs something deep inside him that he has not experienced before.
Ruby always produces interesting stories, I look forward to what ever comes next!

I'm sorry to say this because I really love Ruby Dixon, but I think this one was kind of boring.

description

Neither of the MCs did anything interesting, they didn't really have any chemistry together, and the story just kind of dragged with no real purpose. I just didn't really care about where it was going. And this is definitely the least steamy of any Dixon book I've read. So disappointed 😞.

Characters: Alyvos and Iris

Spice rating: 🌶🌶 out of 5

Content warning: talk of mutilation and enslavement

*Virgin heroine*

Alyvos and the pirate crew get onto a spaceship and discover that there are a lot of dead bodies, body parts scattered around and just disturbing scenes.
Alyvos is angry and wants to destroy the creatures who did that when they hear a small voice saying “hello”.
This was an okay story and I felt really bad for Iris, when she was kidnapped from Earth she fought the aliens that kidnapped her and unfortunately they would punish her for it. She had a toe removed, part of her finger removed and they removed her eyes, so she was a blind heroine.
I liked Alyvos, even though he was the bruiser of the group and couldn’t wait for a fight, he was super patient and gentle with Iris.
I would say that the thing that made me like the story less was that it was more sad to me then other Ruby Dixon books, because of how the heroine was mutilated for fighting against her captor’s.
