The Final Six #2

The Life Below

Rate this book
As Naomi lifts off into space and away from a rapidly deteriorating Earth, she watches the world fade away, and along with it Leo, a Final Six contestant she grew close to during training. Leaving Earth behind is hard, but what’s ahead, on Europa, could be worse. The International Space Training Camp continues to hide the truth about what happened to the last group of astronauts who attempted a similar colonization but failed mysteriously. With one shot—at this mission and to Europa—Naomi is determined to find out if there is alien life on Europa before she and her crew get there.

Leo, back on Earth, has been working with renegade scientist Dr. Greta Wagner, who promises to fly him to space where he can essentially latch on to Naomi’s ship. And if Wagner’s hypothesis is right, it isn’t a possibility of coming in contact with extraterrestrial life on Europa—it’s a definite. With Naomi unaware of what awaits, it’s up to Leo to find and warn her and the others.

With all the pieces of their journey finally clicking into place, everything else starts to fall apart. A storm threatens to interfere with Leo’s takeoff, a deadly entity makes itself known to the Final Six, and the questions the ISTC has been avoiding about the previous failed mission get answered in the worst way possible. If the dream was to establish a habitable domain on Europa… the Final Six are about to enter a nightmare.

I feel like this was a ‘have to’ read, as the first ended on a cliff hanger. 🙄 Didn’t love it… didn’t hate it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Guys... I LOVE this series! I just finished this in one sitting as I couldn’t stop reading. If you’re a fan of the Illuminae books, I think you’d enjoy this series.

Naomi, along with 5 of her brilliant International Space Training Camp classmates, and two AI’s, lift off on the spaceship Pontus to head to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, to begin the years long mission to start colonization of the ice moon as Earth deteriorates. Their mission to begin the terraforming process is imperative so that the Earth’s survivors can then follow after to make Europa their new home.

In the meantime, Leo, who was not selected for the mission ends up working on his own mission to save the six from what he believes they’ll find on Europa.

This 2nd book takes place in space as the six teens face sabatoge of their communication systems and other perilous mishaps.

Throughout the book, Naomi and Leo miss each other never knowing if they’ll ever see each other again. This second book is once again told from their two interchanging POVs and I couldn’t get enough of them. I absolutely adore this couple and can’t wait to find out what happens next!

I'm in shock right now. (End of review Jaime here. Now I'm just mad.)
WHAT.
WHAT was that ending? Or I should say, lack thereof.
I legitimately thought that my edition of the book was missing something, or that there was going to be another book. I'm not the only one apparently, as one of the most popular Google searches for The Final Six was "Final Six book 3."
This wasn't a bad book up until the last 50 pages. It was enjoyable and high stakes. I hadn't read the Final Six in a while and still picked up this book pretty easily. The plot was moving along at a good pace (although it did feel like, because the end of some chapters took place slightly ahead of the beginning of the next chapter, that we were playing catch up most of the time.) However, I honestly don't understand how Monir's editor or anyone on her team read the last 50 pages and thought, "Yes. This is a well fleshed out conclusion that feels finished enough for us to publish it." It feels like there is so much that tries to be explained in the last bit of this book and it only makes the story feel more unfinished. I feel like all of this could have been explored in another 100 pages and lead to a real, satisfying ending, rather than it feeling like this book was a project Monir was writing for a class in college and had to throw in two lines about everything working out in the end before running to her professor's mailbox to make the deadline.
Again, before the end, this wasn't a bad book. It was actually really interesting and I liked a lot of the relationships that were established. I liked the mystery and even though the alien elements reminded me of various SyFy movies I've already seen, I didn't mind all that much. I just can't believe that this book was okayed for print with an ending that made me actually question whether my book was missing sections. I feel like that tanked my whole experience and it could have been so easily fixed, which is the sad part. Would this book have been a five star read if the ending was actually complete? Probably not. It was headed for a three-star rating before I finished it. But I would rather have read a completed three-star book than a thrown together ending tacked on to the end of an otherwise enjoyable read? Yes. Do I think it was fixable and am I frustrated that someone in the editing team didn't address this? Yes.

This completed the 2020 Reading Rush Challenges of:
Read a book the color of your birthstone
Read a book that starts with "The"
Read a book that takes place on a different continent than yours

YOU GUYS. If you haven't read the first book, The Final Six, you cannot start this one. It really wouldn't make sense, just go back and read it. I promise you'll fly through it. This book though? HOLY CRAP, it was so good. I stayed up all night reading this, and if you're a fan of the Hunger Games/Divergent model of adults with ulterior motives manipulating teenagers who end up being smarter, then this is your next read. Naomi is an amazing, strong female lead (even with her panic attacks!), and her relationship with Leo is strong and a good model. I really couldn't stop this and the concept of Earth deteriorating is timely, and the idea of colonizing anywhere else is terrifying but also exciting. I cannot wait for the next book!!

I’m very disappointed with this book. I really expected more from Alexandra Monir after reading The Final Six and waiting 2+ years for this sequel to be released.

The first thing that caught my eye when I was reading were the endless spelling and grammatical errors. I understand that a mistake could happen, but I found a fair amount and there were probably more that I missed along the way.

~ spoilers ~

Then came the letters from Naomi’s brother, Sam. I felt like I was reading the most random, added material Monir could include. On top of that, his words made me cringe. The letters were just so awkward and the brother/sister bond felt forced to me. I felt no connection to the brother and, because of that, he bored me.

The next thing that really got on my nerves was the relationship between Leo and Naomi. In the first book, I found it to be cute. I enjoyed it. In this book, I got secondhand embarrassment. The whole song thing was too much for me. Their excessive hand-holding was too much for me. Their whole romance just became too much for me. I just feel like it all developed too quickly and it should’ve been drawn out a bit more.

Finally... My God, talk about A RUSHED ENDING. Monir could have easily added another one hundred or so pages to this book. Instead, she compressed the timeline so much so that I thought I was accidentally skipping chapters as I read. There were far too many time jumps. With a storyline as complex as the one Monir developed in her first book, she could have easily given us so much more. But, for whatever reason, she didn’t. I mean, is there even going to be a third book? Because that ending... awful. I mean, come on - the last chapter wasn’t even a full page long and then we were given an epilogue from a character that was, in my opinion, forgettable and unnecessary to the story as a whole.

These are the main reasons as to why I’m so disappointed with this book. It had so much potential. SO MUCH. And I wanted to love it. I expected to! But now I’m sitting here writing this review thinking: I just got pranked. Right? I did not just wait 2 whole years for THIS... right?????

My, what a beautifully paced and plotted book! The sequel wrapped this duology with a neat little bow and I'm so satisfied right now. I would really like more books in the same timeline.
That's it, that's the review.

Absolutely blew my mind in every possible way. I have no words.

This book was a really great sequel. I had high expectations, and almost all of them were met. My only problem with this book was the ending...or lack thereof. The author tried to wrap everything up way too quickly, and that didn't work for me.

Overall, though, it's a solid sequel with a lot of unexpected twists and turns.

Content warnings: Body horror, bullying, death, gore, grief, injury/injury details, and panic attacks/disorders.

➝ Sum it up in points!

✔ the final six travel to Europa
✔ cliffhanger is done justice
✔ racial diversity
✔ obstacles in the dark space
✔ fearful yet hopeful occurrences

The Life Below is a sequel that instils the notion of second books in a series raising the standards; it picks up right from the wonderful cliffhanger that turned the last page of The Final Six. Paced across three parts that showcase the journey of these teenagers through space, this science-fiction incorporates genetic revelations, mechanical surprises, and psychological stress to perfectly depict a ride to a different world. From romantic influences to desperate associations, the story definitely builds adrenaline. We witness losses and wrong turns but the essence of hope that space fiction often has, works to strengthen through sadness. With another cliffhanger that is bound to leave the readers wondering what lies ahead, this can be considered a great second book in the series.

➝ Trigger Warnings

✔ death in space
✔ loneliness
✔ wrongly framed reputation
✔ chronically ill sibling
✔ injections

I'm still in the realm of disbelief that these teenagers can know so much and be held responsible for for so much. They are tasked with saving the world, yet breakdown at the drop of a hat. I guess adults do that too. lol However, if you go above that and just enjoy the novel at face value, it is good. I can't say I love Naomi and Leo as much as some... I think they are both immature, while trying super hard to be uber mature, but there is something that still draws me to them. I wish the other characters would be fleshed out a bit more. I don't feel like I know any of them at all and maybe that is a good thing. In a story like this, it might not be a good idea to get too attached.

With all that said, I am very much looking forward to the third book.

Wtf is that ending? The whole book feels rushed and obviously has many plot holes..
It doesn’t tell what happens to Sydney and jian.
And why is Sam in Houston?
Does the ending mean that the DARPA uses alien DNA on humans to make them adapt to changing environment on earth? Wtf man.. bad fucking read.

Still don’t like the first chapter, very random. I didn’t think this book was as good as the first and didn’t like the ending. I’m kinda confused on what happened at the end as it felt very rushed. I want to know how different characters are doing but it ends abruptly. It definitely felt like a second book in a trilogy but the ending doesn’t exactly hint at a third book, maybe a spin-off but not a third directly.
This book came out a few years after the first and in that time I forgot most of the characters. This book never reintroduced them and even though I finished it I can’t picture who most of the characters are. It would’ve been much better if she gave them a summary from the first book instead of just one sentence about their past. I also wish there was a refresher on what they looked like as I don’t remember at all.

This was a very nice continuation of the first book, most of it took place outside of Earth and we got to explore some very cool stuff. I still love the relationship between Naomi and Leo, they're adorable and I want them to be happy. This novel still left a lot of questions answered though and maybe even had some potential plot holes? Anyway, I'm ready for the sequel and I hope it comes quicker this time!

¡Fuaaaaa!

Me encantó.

I am SO TORN over this book. Literally 95% of this book, I was on the edge of my seat. Yes, there was teenage drama that caused me to roll my eyes a little, but the tension was so great, and the stakes were so high that it kept making me want to go back to it. But then it ended so quickly, and for the end of a duology, there are so many more questions that I have. Maybe she's left strings open to continue on in this world and if that is the case, I'm here for it. But I can't find anything about a third book so this book needs another 50-100 pages.

I’m honestly so sad to rate this book so low. I had such high hopes for this series, but it just fell so flat for me.

Without giving any spoilers, The Life Below ended up being unsatisfying and uninteresting. The events of the novel felt rushed and only seemed to really get interesting at the end. So many questions were left unanswered and I don’t believe there will be a third to this series.

I’m especially disappointed because I had such interest in the story. The premise is fascinating and I know Alexandra Monir put an incredible effort into the research, which is absolutely commendable.

But overall, I’d probably give The Life Below 1.5/5 stars. I had a more difficult time connecting to the characters in The Life Below than with them in The Final Six and the major events that happened in the novel were underwhelming for me. Because of that disconnect to the characters, it didn’t really evoke a response in me.

Of course these opinions are of my own and many people have read the series and enjoyed it. I just found that I was disappointed and was expecting more out of it.

Unfortunately I’m a bit disappointed on the ending, not gonna lie. I feel like if there were more books coming out it would make sense, but from my understanding this is just a duology so the ending was slightly confusing and it was open ended.

The journey throughout this book was one of excitement and sadness, considering that there were a number of people we lost throughout it, sadly.

There are a lot of things that I want to know more about, such as the ending, the people that were helping Leo, what exactly inhabits Europa and what they can do.

I still really enjoyed this book and the journey of The Final Six, as well as Leo’s journey. The romance was also a bonus because Leo and Naomi are so unbelievably adorable.

it was worth it, but i wanted a bIT more closure then what was provided. but, all in all, this book was amazing, wonderfully written, a perfect pace, and the transition between the two books was perfect in my opinion.
