Galaxy's Edge, Part II
By: Jason Anspach, Nick Cole
Narrated by: R.C. Bray
Series: Galaxy's Edge Series, Book 3-4
This book has books 3 and 4 in it. Book 3 was not as clear to me as to what the plot was all about. Book 4 got back to being clearer and exciting. Bray is excellent as usual!

Summary:
First, let me say that none of what I’ll say in this section couldn’t be found on the back copy of the novel. Heck, I cribbed this summary from the back, and then I add my own twist! And not even much of one, since most of the books I read have kick butt descriptions (aka blurbs). If the blurb doesn’t catch my eye, then I tend to skip the book unless a friend recommends it. Generally speaking, my goal is to provide a spoiler-free review, so here goes nothing!

The Legion Dark Ops has called upon Chhun, Wraith, and the survivors of Victory Company to form an elite Kill Team of legionnaires in the aftermath of the Battle of Kublar. Their mission is clear: find and eliminate those responsible for the Kublar disaster.

Standing between them and their objective are a maze of corrupt Republic officials, a spy on the verge of losing himself in deep cover, and the Zhee – a murderous species that will stop at nothing. But the biggest threat of all might be the truth they seek to uncover – a truth that could ignite a revolution. And engulf the galaxy in flames.

Fleets collide in this audiobook in a moment-by-moment account of tactics, heroism, sacrifice, and the start of the final war of the Republic. The stakes have never been higher – and it’s winner takes all.

If you like epic space opera, with a side of military science fiction, you should read this series. Plenty of explosions, with authentically gritty combat. If this sounds like your flavor of badassery, then you’ve come to the right place! This novel is a brilliant continuation of what you already love about the Galaxy’s Edge Universe. It’s a series where the authors fix everything George Lucas broke in this Star-Wars-Not-Star-Wars adventure. I wish I could give you an easy comparison, if you enjoyed Book X, buy this book but I really feel like Nick and Jason broke new ground here. There will definitely be immitadors soon who’ll stand on their shoulders, but for now, they stand alone! This authorly duo has revived that sense of newness and fun that we loved as children, that brought most of us to the science fiction genre! There are other military sci-fi books out there, but none quite like this!

Narration Quality:
This is my second exposure to narrator R.C. Bray, and I was again impressed. This audiobook was excellently executed, and he was the perfect person for this novel. He didn’t bore you, or make you zone out because of his monotone. His performance didn’t feel robotic like a machine was reading the novel too me. Instead, it felt visceral, and for a second I was back on the Route Irish, dodging IEDs, just trying to live another day. I listened to this one as I drove around to my wife’s various appointments, and there were times when I had to pull over and take a moment. It was rough, but in a good way and I enthusiastically encourage you to take a chance on this universe. I wholeheartedly give Bray 5 out of 5 grenades for his performance.

Fan Reactions:
“Action-packed military sci-fi with no down time! It’s everything that I want from something in the vein of Star Wars.” ~ Albert Avilla
“I got sucked into the Galaxy’s Edge universe with part one of the audiobooks, but I got completely lost with the epic nature of part two. Every chapter is full of surprises, realistic action and characters that feel like old friends. I loved every second of it!!” ~ Logan Scott
“The entire audiobook has a frenetic pace to it; adrenaline-fueled and piping hot as it moves from one part of each relentless battle to the next. From the battle to take out the fortress embedded into the moon to the fleet battles between massive battleships to the aerial battles to the on-the-ground perspective of soldiers from both sides as the strategy plays out. Each side has to cope with the turning tides of battle because no plan survives contact with the enemy and death could come at any moment.” ~Chris Fried
“Anspach, Cole, and Bray delivered a punch-them-in-the-gut, action-packed military sci-fi adventure. Kablam! KTF!” ~Steve Beaulieu
“The twists and turns don’t stop coming! This story reminds us all that the war you get isn’t the war you expected. It’s Red Storm Rising meets Star Wars and narrated by the epic tones of R.C. Bray.” ~Josh Hayes
“Galaxy’s Edge Part 2 is a satisfying blend of military science fiction and a Cold War spy thriller. The action ranges from war-torn battlefields to the city streets, and the depths of space. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, and Goth Sullus will keep you wanting more!” ~Edward D. Hudson

Overall:
I really loved this audiobook, it was a lot of fun to listen too. It brought back the epic space romps I read and loved as a kid. This audiobook contained Kill Team and Attack of Shadows which I’ve previously reviewed. My thoughts on Kill Team are here, and my thoughts on Attack of Shadows can be found here. This double pack of audio awesomeness was a lot of fun to listen too, and I couldn’t recommend it more! There were no deep messages, or political themes, just good clean fun. The story was compelling and reminded me why I wanted to join the Legion in the first place. Let’s be real, my fighting days are over, but I could forget that while I listened to this book. That’s a dual edge sword though, I had to stop some because it brought on flashbacks of my time in the deserts of Iraq. The narrator painted a visceral emotional picture in ways that the plain text hadn’t. But for a second I could be young and spry again; capable of chewing lead, spitting out bullets and walking through fire. Definitely gave me a case of the feels, and I found myself wanting to be a part of it all. I was reminded of why I started the Galaxy’s Edge Facebook Fanclub in the first place! It’s everything that I loved about this Star Wars-esq universe. I don’t want to come on too strong, but I love this series, and this audiobook reminded me yet again why that is!!

The first thing that caught my eye was the fantastic cover, it was amazingly compelling. These guys know how to pick good art, and we’re all the better for it! It was the cover from Kill Team, the first book that’s contained in this audiobook. I loved the cover then, and I still love it today!! There’s the promise of action, and a hint of secrets yet to be revealed as the leejes wait to breach the door on the cover. I loved the little hint of mystery; what IS on the other side of that hatch anyway? Seriously, if I weren’t colorblind and art dumb, I’d add a section to these review template on the covers because so many of them are kicking butt these days! I know I said this about Scott Bartlett’s cover too, but the caliber of covers is certainly improving, and this book just kicks Awesome up a notch! They reminded me of the fun comic images I loved, or movie posters from the action adventures I read when I was supposed to be studying. When I finally have a dedicated office or man cave, I’m decorating it with these covers! And whenever they sell swag, that too!

Seriously, I realize I’ve gone full fanboy, but the authors have definitely raised the bar for military science fiction authors everywhere. And R.C. Bray, wow! Totally Bro-Crush on this cat, I’ll be listening to any of the other science fiction he narrates. Basically, Bray had me hooked from the beginning and kept it going throughout the whole audiobook. This is yet another audiobook I would happily recommend, and an author I will definitely read again. Buy the audiobook adaptation of Kill Team and Attack of Shadows!! But hey, it’s easy to spend someone else’s money! I give this novel a 5 out of 5 grenades! If it weren’t cheating, I’d give it 6 grenades!

If this audiobook sounds like it’s right up your alley, check it out, you won’t regret it! Well, unless it inspired you to serve the Legion. And you enlist, get kitted up, only to realize that your armor is made of wax paper. Then you’re put on the front lines, getting to be on the tip of the spear. In your first firefight, you’ll realize that the pretty uniforms won’t save you. And then the other shoe drops, you figure out that the weapons aren’t calibrated, and you can’t hit the broad side of a barn. But, alas, every rebel scum is a crack shot. Well yeah, I guess this could be bad for you. Or maybe you’ll be okay? I mean, you could be the first trooper to make it out alive? On second thought, be warned, fanboy/fangirl syndrome just MIGHT kill you. Be wary, you were warned and if you have to go out like that at least enjoy the view from the end times!

This is a bit of a jarring change from the first book - if you're looking for continuity here, then give up now. There are fantastic characters here and they're really entertaining, but this bears no connection to the first book other than the mention of the battle of Kublar. Still, Keel is pretty fun.

And RC Bray is fantastic.

Loved "Kill Team." Didn't love "Attack of Shadows." None of my favorite characters were in it, and I didn't connect with any of the characters. It was all one long never ending battle. I mean, I didn't think it was EVER going to end. 4 stars for Kill Team.

"Mark 'em, load 'em and get ready to chew 'em up."
Such fantastic value for a credit: two full and excellent novels, both standalone but with interconnected aspects between these and the previous stories. Both are action packed, but the second, in particular, never stops as space battle rages through the galaxy and the reader is carried from ship to ship, sides both claiming the right to victory when seen through the eyes of the players. This reader enjoys military action but usually only in proportion to a non action ongoing story. But this book was different : so well written, it held attention from the first pages to the ending. The reader is swirled through the desperate engagements, political deceptions, and hopes and fears of the various protagonists, sympathies tugged from one to another. Phenomenal.

The preceding story is more planet bound, face to face action as the few survivors of Victory company following the disaster that was Kubbar, are recruited to Black Ops, and we are introduced to the whisper of a rumour that was Nether Ops, and a man named Tom.
The characterisations are excellent, with real life, three dimensional people living, dying, laughing, remembering, hurting, fighting and bleeding across the pages. Narrator, A.C.Bray brings everything even more to life with his excellent performance, with well modulated and paced text reading and individually appropriate voices for every protagonist. The perfect symbiosis of narrator and authors' text.
It is for stories like this, there should be an extra super star rating. And for anyone who enjoys intelligent and immaginative military space opera, this is a must read book.

A gripping continuation of the series and a strong narrative but slightly disorienting

Kill Team delivers solid action and character development, building on the foundation set by the earlier books. The world-building continues to impress, immersing readers in the complexities of the Galaxy’s Edge universe. Following the characters as they navigate intense missions is both thrilling and rewarding, especially with the camaraderie and tension they share.

Hearing the phrase "KTF" repeatedly invoked gave me an (admittedly unearned) sense of pride, showcasing the bond and ethos of the Legionnaires. While I enjoyed this book, it felt more like a transitionary chapter in the series rather than a standalone highlight.

While Attack of Shadows has moments of brilliance, particularly in its world-building and intense action sequences, I found myself a little lost in the second half. The expanding scope of the story introduces more characters and plot threads, which can make it challenging to stay fully grounded.

That said, the character development remains engaging, and the story continues to weave an intricate web of loyalty, conflict, and high-stakes drama. It’s clear that the series is moving toward something epic, even if this installment feels slightly less cohesive than earlier entries.

These are two novels in one. Action-packed both, but very different novels nonetheless. Kill Team follows a, well, kill team, consisting almost entirely of some characters from the very first novel. Great to 'meet' these characters a second time, as I hope we will again further on in this saga (those that survived....).
The fourth novel is completely different but had me on the edge of my seat all the way. It follows several characters and teams, on both sides of the conflict, during a day-long ruthless battle between the Republic and its new and mysterious enemy - the one Tyrus Rechs met and battled in the second novel.
There's hardly any character development in this second story, it's purely plot driven, but wow what a plot. I didn't know I could be captivated by this type of story, but here I am. These are mostly new characters but well into the second half we do -unexpectedly - meet yet another character from the very first novel.

Chronologically I think its 1-3-2-4 with these novels. Can't wait to listen to the rest. Because these are even better to listen to than to read, this narrator really adds to the atmosphere these stories need.

I don't often give 5 stars. Highly recommend.

Kill Team - Galaxy's Edge #3:
After the battle for Kublar, the Legionnaires want answers, they want to know who is responsible for the loss of so many lives, and for the destruction of their ship over the planet. Expecting to lose their Field Commissions on return to another ship, Captain Ford and Lieutenant Chhun are instead surprised to find that they are permanently appointed to these positions, and even more surprised when they are offered a position on a Kill Team doing Dark Ops. Joined by an experienced Dark Ops operative, they are quickly off on missions to track down those that cost the Legion, those that sold the bombs, and to find out what could be next.
Whilst running missions, they learn from an inside source that things are worse than they thought, another mission is planned by the MCR and this time their target will upset the entire Galaxy.
It is up to the Indelible 6, a Dark Ops Kill Team made up of the Legions best, to stop it, to save the Galaxy before it burns. Time to KTF.
Whilst it might seem that this books are guns and glory, they aren’t. These are well thought out, incredibly well written stories with keen tactical and strategic knowledge, exceptional characters and some brilliant tech. The combat scenes are outstanding, written with in-depth skill, so that you feel like you are standing in the room watching the battle take place in front on you.
This is a book that will suit all readers, those looking for a fantastic read of black ops, and skilled combat (I still say it has an edge of an Adults Only version of Star Wars the Clone Wars, with the Elite Clones to TacOps), but it also covers aspects of the Political Intrigue going on behind the scenes, looks at the soldier’s lives and how this is affecting them, and then there is the Espionage aspect of it as well, with all the cloak and dagger stuff going on behind the scenes as well. This book has something for everyone.
Best of all though, it is just exceptionally well written, Chhun, Tom, and all the other characters are just beautifully constructed, so real, so in-depth with their emotions, their responses, the dialogue.
This is a book that you will pick up, and just be glued to, whipping through pages and not be able to put down as you have to know what happens.
Galaxy’s Edge is the place to be, for a brilliant read you don’t want to miss.

Assault on Shadows - Galaxy's Edge #4:
There seems to be a pattern to this series, with each alternate book focussing on either the specific characters (Chhun and his team), are as is the case for Assault of Shadows pulling out to give us a wider scope of the Galaxy and the war at large. It is a very clever and fascinating way to keep the readers engaged, and to also tell the stories of the ground troops, those in the thick of the action, but also allow us to get a scope of the scale of the galactic conflict that is unfolding from the Galaxy’s Edge inward.
In this Epic 4th instalment, Goth Sollus, ‘The Man in Black’ has brought together a fleet of his own, 3 massive Battleships with support ships, as well as highly trained soldiers including many ex-Legionnaires who have either been kicked out, pushed out, or left as they are so dis-enchanted by the Republic, and their use of ‘Points’ as Political tools in controlling their military forces, even at the cost of lives. Sollus rallies these ex-Legionnaires into a mighty fighting force, as well as using them to train additional soldiers. With a mighty Navy that he has also gathered, he is ready to strike at un-prepared Republic that is weak and believes itself all powerful.
Anspach and Cole do a brilliant job of building the intensity at the start of this book, like a slow moving chess game with the Galaxy as the outcome, both sides moving pieces about. However, whilst the Republic push pawns around uselessly, Sollus positions his most powerful pieces into strategic positions without the Republic even noticing. That is one of the best parts of this book, the strategic and tactical moves as they are unfolding.
One thing that is a little hard to know though, is whose side you are meant to be on? In the previous book, we were clearly on the Republic side, wanting Chhun and his team to survive and complete their mission. However, in this book, the Republic are almost made out to be the enemy, and Sollus the hero, the good side, even though there is definite linkages to him being Darth Vader at times (the ominous Man in Black!!). It is a little confusing to know who to go for in this book.
As things unfold though, and Sollus moves his pieces into play this book becomes such an outstanding story of intense war, with incredibly crafted battle scenes that leave you holding your breath as you read them, flipping through pages to find out what is going to happen next. Anspach and Cole write the most amazing battle sequences, whether it be close combat hand-to-hand, shooting, sniper fire, aerial dog fighting, and fighter combat, all the way through to capital ships slaughtering each other with super weapons, the two of them have the ability to create it all.
Something just as an aside is all the ‘Easter Eggs’ that are throughout these stories. As you are reading, you realise that there are quotes from multiple different movies and Sci-Fi references (Star Wars gets a lot of references), that just makes it fun to read (or listen to if you are an audio fan), to try and pick them out.
Part 4 is a fantastic story. It is those that feel betrayed by the Republic, feel that the Republic is weak, that the House of Reason is no longer reasonable, and must be removed. Part 4 is all about Civil War, and it is just so cleverly done. I think that is the best thing about this book, when you read how Sollus put his resources together and you realise what he did, you also realise just how clever he has been, and how brilliant the underlying story is.
This is an outstanding story, in an Epic Series, and should not be missed!!

This is books 3 and 4 of the Galaxy's Edge series, which is a pretty standard military sci-fi novel. Fans of the genre will probably enjoy it, others probably not so much. Book 3 follows the Legionnaire team from book 1, and is in my opinion the better of the two. The second book is basically a battle in space, which was hard to follow in the audible version. I finally gave up on trying to figure out who was on each side and just went with it. I suppose I'll eventually read pt. 3 of the series, but I'll not be pining for it.

Good series for military sci-fi fans, but not great.

If you needed suspense, surprise twists, and unexpected turns in addition to excellent hard military sci-fi and general badassery, then look no further. Meet your favorite Kill Team and hear of the many heroes of one of the battles that ended one era, and started another for the "beloved" Galactic Republic. Anspach, Cole, and Bray unsurprisingly deliver two more great hits in a series full of them. KTF Leejs.

First half with the kill team was more of the military action I missed from book 1. Didn't like the Tom sub-plot though. Master's will be sorely missed.

The second half went from 0 to 100 for it's entire duration - a truly epic space battle during which I was on the edge of my seat the entirety. Was gleefully surprised XO was one of the leading shock troopers! Glad Devers finally got what's coming to him.

This book is fantastic! The first half provided a lot more backstory and introduced quite a few pivotal characters. One of those character's POV was written in second person, which was very interesting to read. The story is compelling and engaging. The second half is a major space battle from multiple POVs. The way all the moving parts react and affect each other seems extremely accurate to real life.

I think this would have been far more entertaining if we hadn't been following Tom. His morose, almost psychotic episodes of PTSD from being deep undercover were just no fun at all. And again, the whole military chain of command nonsense is maddening. I do like the characters, though, and I did like the ending.

And I stick with it because of RC Bray.

I have no idea where most of this takes place in the timeline. It seems like it's somewhere in the middle of what I've read so far, but it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense right now. I'm giving it one more book and then I may move on to something else.

The only way for this book to be more derivative of Star Wars is to just call the characters Han and Leia.

I thought the 7 year jump in the #2 was a bit much as there was so much of the story that seemed to have just been skipped. Now in #3 we go back to basically where #1 left off. I wish the author would figure out what the overarching story is he wants to tell and stick with a cognizant timeline. Flashbacks barely work on the big screen, they sure don't work in an action packed military sci-fi storyline.
