Phase Five in Ruth Hay’s Home Sweet Home series. Harmony House was an experiment based on the principles of mutual help and support. When one of their members died, Hilary and Mavis knew more tests would arise as time went on. What they did not know was how much the past predicts the future, for good and bad. Hilary is losing it. Vilma is using it. Mavis is fighting it. Jannice is writing it. Faith is creating it. Honor is braving it. Harmony House is celebrating it.
Who is Ruth Hay? I am a retired teacher-librarian who loves books, reading, writing and storytelling. After a lifetime of writing for education purposes, I can now create the kind of family-friendly stories I have always loved to read. I have been lucky enough to travel and those adventures feature in my Prime Time novel series. Visit Scotland, England, Greece, Italy and Egypt with my heroine Anna Mason. Have you ever known a family that didn't have some kind of mystery to solve? Anna Mason's family is no different. The thing that most surprises, and shocks, Anna, is how much was hidden from her. How does she uncover the answers? That involves time, travels, a concealed journal and a new home in Scotland that gradually gives up its secrets. Not until the sixth, book, are the most unexpected developments revealed. In 2016 I added a new chapter to Anna's life story. Read it in Return to Oban. Will there be more? I can't wait to find out! Also in 2016 the Seven Days Series was completed. What a busy writing year! This series introduces four women who reunite in a luxurious holiday in the English Lake District. Of course, they have a wonderful time together but no one could have expected the surprising events that set off changes lasting far longer than just one week. There are six novels with the last having two sections. Lots of heartfelt reading for you. Which of the women will be your favourite; Zoe, Valerie, Corinne or Sandra? In 2017 I am working on a new series. Sign up for my monthly Newsletter www.ruthhay.com to get updates. Thank you for being one of Ruth's Readers.
I have read the whole series. I found the premise of the books interesting and was invested enough in the characters to want to see how it all ended. I can’t give any of the books more than three stars though because of the stilted writing style. I was also bothered by all the British phrases and words being spoken by women who were supposed to be Canadian. Even though some of the inhabitants of Harmony House were young, the reactions and dialogue of every single character sounded like they were in their eighties.
There was something familiar about the writing style that I couldn’t quite put my finger on until I received an email this morning from my mother. My mom is 90 years old and English. She grew up in England, did some post-secondary education there and then furthered her education at university when she moved to Canada. It prompted me to look up some background on Ruth Hay. Turns out her background is very similar to my mom’s, though Ms. Hay is Scottish, not English. Rough calculations put her at around 80. I guess her writing style is that of an educated British woman of a certain era.
After reading four of Ruth Hay’s books in a row, I am now going to read a Jack Reacher novel and shock my brain back to life!
Ruth Hay has written a marvelous series spanning 10 years in the lives of six women who come to share a house together. Each woman has a past, with personal gifts and talents, as well as challenges and limitations, yet somehow these six come together and form a 'familial' bond that carries them together through mundane to life threatening experiences! And through it all, while the bonds between them grow stronger, they make Harmony House a home and place of refuge for themselves and all who come into their circle of life and love!
Fiction or could this actually happen? It will make you wonder!
Family is all about those you choose. This is so wonderfully crafted in this series. To watch the women bond and ground is like being able to be a resident in this marvelous home. Like life, there is the sadness and joy. I am sad that the series has ended but look forward to reading her other series.
I really enjoyed all 5 books in this series. It follows 6 very different women who decide to live in a co-housing setting with mutual respect and support in order to avoid senior living facilities as they age.
Getting to know each character was a joy. Ruth certainly has the knack and keeps us wanting more. I enjoy her style of storytelling and was eager to start each book. Ready to read them again.
After reading the first, I had to purchase the remaining 4 in the series. The most enjoyable books I have read in a long time filled with emotion be it happy, sad, love etc. but most of all simply heartwarming.
