If you know me - you know I love anything steampunk.
Quality read - I definitely recommend it.

Good, campy steampunk fun

Think 'steampunk Austin Powers meets Indiana Jones Temple of Doom' and you'll get a feel for this book. The story has all the elements you'd expect in the genre, and then some...

Created creature? Check. Meet RA-7, robot dandy extraordinaire. There's also a hint of a supernatural being. Victorian feel? Check. Although in this alternative history, the USA has just fought another war against the Brits, so they're not particularly fond of the queen. Realistic period details (fashions, weapons, politics, etc.) add rich texture. Cool gadgets? Double check. If you're a bit of a science nerd, you'll appreciate Dr.What's tech explanations... and his exasperation with his team members who merely pretend to understand how the science works while they use it to blast away at bad guys.

What is refreshing:
1- unique setting in upstate NY with authentic detail of Rochester and the Adirondacks.
2- scattering of subtle 80's pop culture references
3- Several strong, competent (but still feminine) female characters.
4- Some deeper conversations between characters discussing conflicts of their day (and ours) relating to reconciling science and faith, labor versus management, etc. Always fit / add to the story and characters.

Who will enjoy? If you are looking for a streamline story that feels inspired by adventure comics, you'll particularly enjoy this amusing, fast-paced and well-plotted story. Although it is not specifically YA, most parents would probably find it appropriate for teen readers.

A criticism- Book needs a pass of a professional proof-reader to polish punctuation. But that is something that the author can easily fix for future readers so it did not affect my enjoyment of the story or my rating.

Steampunk in the Adirondacks

Good story, some good characters. Unfortunately, one of the heroes was enough of an asshat that I looked forward to him not being part of the story. Double unfortunately, the heroine (who was a really good character) was infatuated with the asshat.

This felt so much like a melodrama, I expected the villain to tie a damsel-in-distress to the railroad tracks and twirl his pencil-thin mustache in glee. Well, I was wrong. It was a handlebar mustache.

This books needs an editor so badly. Misused words scattered hither and yon. There were so many, misplaced commas. So, many.

Despite these complaints, I think the author shows promise and I expect to read the next book. However, I think I'll give it a, good long while.

This is a steam punk book. The two main protagonists are veterans of a war between the USA and the British Empire. This story focuses on labor inequities in a Victorian era society and an archaeological find.

You only have to Google the Molly Maguires to discover that violence and the labor movement have had many connections.

The depicted society includes Vanderbilts and others of the same ilk.

An accomplished scientist provides a variety of interesting weapons to Piper and Emma.

The story was entertaining

Stepping into adventures like these is amazing.

Society advanced in so many wonderful ways. Yet seemingly always hindered by greed and prejudice. I enjoy seeing many rise beyond it. The adventures they take on are high risk. Full of action and just enough mystery to keep one guessing.

Interesting ideas

The author creatively brings historical figures into this alternate history story. Added to the mix are the genre "required" daring protagonists and imaginative technology. My lower rating is due to the book needing an editor's pass. The typos and poor punctuation kept jarring me out of the story.

A MOST FANTASTIC TALE

This has been one of the most fantastic books I have read in years. So jam packed with action and adventure I couldn't put it down! It is a good old fantasy like I have never seen in my life! It totally held my attention throughout and gripped me beyond words. I recommend it for everyone!

Excellent story. Kind of pulp-y with a nice fresh location that I know, the Adirondacks. I am ready for book 2 in the spring.

Typing errors=serious distraction

Greatly enjoyed the storylines. A number of typing errors created distractions from the story. Perhaps a human editor would be of value.
