Am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wird eine Position formuliert, die vorschlägt, 'dies Ganze für einen Schiffbruch zu betrachten und sich bei dieser Gelegenheit das Strandrecht zuzueignen' (Moritz). Diese Haltung - als Kollaps und Überbietung des 18. Jahrhunderts - setzt auf einen radikalen Bruch mit der Aufklärung und erdenkt in seinem Gefolge ('Strandrecht') eine unendliche Bewegung, die die 'einzig wahre' Konstruktion von Welt aufsplittert und in die Kette der Kunstwerke verlegt. Der Herausbildung einer solchen, schon ästhetizistisch zu nennenden Position und dem mit ihr verbundenen ästhetischen Imperativ geht die Untersuchung am Beispiel von Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Karl-Philipp Moritz und Heinrich Heine nach. Effekt dieses ästhetischen Imperativs ist die moderne Auffassung von Text.

About the author

Jürgen Fohrmann is a distinguished German academic specializing in German literature, cultural theory, and media studies. Born in 1953, he studied in Münster and Bielefeld and completed his doctorate in 1980. He became a professor of Modern German Literature and General Literary Studies at the University of Bonn in 1991, where he also served as the university’s rector from 2009 to 2015. After returning to teaching, he retired in 2021.
Fohrmann’s work spans topics like literary and media theory, the history of science, and German cultural history from the 18th to the 21st centuries. He has also held significant roles in academic administration, including chairing the German Association of German Studies and contributing to international research initiatives in collaboration with institutions in Japan, Israel, and the U.S. His recent publications explore the intersections of literature, politics, and culture, with titles such as The Rhetoric of Populism and the Popular (2022) and Polemical Publics (2021)​.
He is widely recognized for organizing academic workshops and research projects, with interests in media transformations and cultural communication​.
