I read a lot. Like, a lot a lot. So to come across a story that is new and original...that doesn’t happen often. But let me tell you, I have NEVER read a book quite like this one. The intrigue will keep you turning pages, and if it doesn’t then the hero will. Can I just say that communicating through secret messages within the pages of Austen, Bronte, and Dickens is enough to make any bibliophiles heart go putter-patter. To have someone see you so wholly and love you so deeply and tell you repeatedly exactly who you are even when the world is trying to convince you otherwise... phew. Romantic!
And the layers! And the depth! Man, Joanna Politano is one wise woman. The message within these pages is one we all need to be reminded of.
Loved it!

Wow! I have not been intrigued by a book and read it almost nonstop like this one in quite some time.
Where is the option for 100 stars, surely this one deserves it!
Who could ever imagine the rags to riches story awaiting inside these pages?
Dank, dark and dangerous that's London's East End where Raina Bretton lives in poverty and works as a rag woman.
Seemingly chosen by random in a dark alley by a handsome stranger she is whisked off to a new life of glamour and servants. There is a catch though, she is now Lady Enderly who is said to be taking a break from the public's eye.
Who really is Lady Enderly though and where is she?
A very real gothic feel will accompany you as you read the pages of this book with the abbey in it's decay and ruin. A foreboding feeling will linger with you as secrets are rampant and what about those who threaten to reveal her secret identity?
I could not read this book quickly enough danger, mystery, romance a haunting prose. This is one not to miss!

Raina is one of the most interesting characters I've had the pleasure to read about this year...from the first moment, she's thrown into an impossible situation and left reeling by the demands of her fancy new job. I loved the many layers in the mystery behind what happened to the real Lady Enderly and who she might have actually been, and the deep distrust of all the different servants...who's plotting and who's honest, and which of those are really friends to Raina?

I honestly couldn't put it down and I was walking around doing chores with it in my hand just to find out what happened next. I really love a good suspense story, and this one fully engaged my attention.

Thanks to the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.

I've been well and truly gobsmacked. Again! This is another book that defies description, but, of course, I'll try! It's everything grand in a historical multiplied by a thousand more goodness! The kind of story that kidnaps an unsuspecting reader and holds her hostage until the very last page and then, when she's finally released, she doesn't want her freedom. It's the kind of book that almost ruins you for any others. Almost. I'm hyperventilating over that thought. Rest assured, I didn't lose my passion for reading but I might have wallowed in the boohoo-my-book-is-over-now-what-shall-I-do blues for awhile.

One of the most captivating things about Finding Lady Enderly was that I never knew what to expect. Nothing is predictable! Just when I thought I knew which way was up...it wasn't! And I was on edge the whole read! Like ants-in-my-pants wriggling in anticipation half the time and cowering under the covers in dread the other half! I do so love being fully engulfed in a reading experience!

And the romance...be still my heart! This is seriously one toe-curling thrill of a love story despite (or because) the couple don't spend a lot of page time together. But the furtive way they arrange to communicate sent this bibliophile's heart a-racing! One of the best parts of the book!!!!!!

A richly layered masterpiece of exquisite reading pleasure!

Sidenote: I listened to the audible edition which is amazing! And sweet torture because there's no way to race ahead to get through the gnarly bits -- a listener must hang on to every blessed word spoken by narrator Sarah Nichols. I was on the verge of a heart attack all the way through!

Yet another book I wanted to like so much! In fact, I put off reading it because I wanted to like it so much.

It sounded like it was right up my alley ... sort of a Rebecca vibe. But I knew it wouldn't be. It's Christian fiction. Christian fiction doesn't do Rebecca vibes.

So yes. I was disappointed. It did not go how I wanted. And so, I shall pout and be a baby and make a big stink.

But I'd like to note that it's not the author's fault. She's writing Christian fiction, not mid-century women's fiction that doesn't need a conclusive end. It's not her fault that she fell in love with a story that works much better if you're an atheist. (I'm not, but ... gah, I wish everyone could just be mean to everyone. It'd be so much more intriguing.)

Let's attack the dislikes that I can say, honestly, are fair. (The rest of them are not fair because I wanted this book to be something the genre would not be. Which is dark and brooding and Gothic.)

I found Raina's constant waffling annoying. It was obvious from almost the first chapter what she was going to decide. Also, she kept all the wrong secrets and shared all the wrong ones, and it was just ... stop, Raina. You clearly haven't watched enough Hitchcock to know how to do this correctly. (Which makes sense since movies weren't a thing back then, but shhh.)

I also just didn't care about her character arc ... I mean, the answer was obvious. Or what the author wanted the answer to be was obvious! It was just the painful wait until Raina caught up to reality.

Sully annoyed me on every possible level. He was condescending. He was "holier-than-thou" about everything. He was offended about things he had absolutely no right to be offended about. In fact - I would call him a chauvinist, and I never, ever use that term because I find it rather silly. But he was, as far as the term can be applied to a man in his era.

And don't say he's redeemed because he quoted Jane Austen once! He is not. I do not forgive him.

Here's the thing: SULLY IS NOT MR. KNIGHTLEY! He is not older than her. He is not wiser than her. He is not BETTER than her in ANY WAY. He is not even a relative to has some rights to boss her around. He. has. no. claim. to. Raina. except. what. she. gives. him. Yet he treats her like his bratty little sister!

I know everyone is swooning over their cute system of communication and how sweet it is that they both like books ... but a book lover does not make a good person. It does not. In fact, I have known a number of book lovers who are very BAD people. And Sully is one of them.

I feel like Sully was just book lover wish fulfillment combined with convenient "shoulder angel" therapy for Raina, and I couldn't take it. I just couldn't.

Sully functions as Raina's conscience. And though I am not opposed to couples who are reliant on each other (that is after all what marriage is) or couples who influence each other positively (<<), I am very opposed to couples where one of them is the moral guider of the other. This doesn't work, and it will lead to a bitter, empty relationship in the long run.

Okay, now that I've gotten my fair negatives out of the way ... let's talk about the unfair ones.

I didn't like the plot. It wasn't what it should have been. And the rest of this review will be semi-spoilers, but since none of this actually happened, it's also not spoilers. But read at your own risk.

Aside from that, I think it was a good book. But it's hard to tell because I'm stubborn and annoyed, and those two things tend to lead to some very grouchy feelings.

So, upon examination, I give it 1/5 as a personal rating and 3/5 as a realistic rating, leading to an overall rating of 2/5. I'm sorry, Mrs. Politano and the many fans of this book. I tried. I could not like it.

Talented Politano delivers another engaging novel with a creative storyline. Readers that enjoy multiple twists and surprises will find Finding Lady Enderly delivers.

Raina is presented with an opportunity to escape her life as a rag woman. This opportunity is delivered by a gentleman she doesn't know. The love of her heart, Sully, was tragically killed at sea. She feels there is nothing to lose.

As time passes, Raina realizes there were things about her life in the lower class that were positive. How many of us long for a "better" life? Would it truly be better?

What I loved most about the novel is the creative storyline and the way Raina exchanged messages with her friend through novel passages.

My gratitude to publisher Revell for a complimentary NetGalley copy of this novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Finding Lady Enderly is a delightfully creative story. A literal rag to riches story, Raina is a rag woman who is convinced to take part in a charade to become Lady Enderly. Why she is not sure, but when it's offered to her, she can't help but grasp this life that once was nothing but a dream for her. Of course, the dream life comes with holes that look suspiciously like nightmares, and she soon realizes that danger is around every corner.

The setting of Rothbourne Abbey provides a backdrop of crumbling decadence, complete with near-ruined walls and a derelict library. It's the perfect backdrop for the mysteries and intrigue found in this story. There are also a myriad of secondary characters, some beloved and some despised. Rains isn't sure who to trust, and what's more, she is not sure if she can even trust herself. The themes of truth and identity are prevalent, and the question of how you can find the truth when you've taken part in a lie. The twists and turns of the plot make it a book that reads easily and quickly. I think my favorite part is how the characters used novels and certain passages within them to pass messages to each other - so charming!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher; this review is my honest opinion.

FTC Disclosure: NetGalley and Revell Reads gave me complimentary copies of this book (one electronic, one paperback). A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts.

Where do I start? What a captivating novel! From the first page, the style was engrossing, fascinating, and exquisitely quotable. If I had jotted down every line that made me sigh for how beautiful it was, I would have a notebook filled with at least half the lines from this story.

The unique usage of novels within the romance thread was beautiful and made me giggle with delight and gasp with elation. I truly admired the way each of the classics used were woven in so seamlessly and delectably. Every new quote had me holding my breath to see just what sentiment would be shared this time.

There were pieces of this story that reminded me of My Fair Lady and Cinderella as well as the gothic flavor of Wuthering Heights, though not necessarily the torrid tragedy that I somehow find enthralling about that particular vintage book. It’s clear to me that Mrs. Politano has a great appreciation for classic stories, for she put them on display very well in her own tale, from transforming a rag woman to the book quotes I previously mentioned to the very essence of the telling of Finding Lady Enderly. There was something so completely addicting about the overall classic feel to this story that it truly ought to be an instant classic, if I might be so bold to state.

The characters were rich and deep, quite complex, and so secretive that I was kept guessing along the way. The twisty plot aided that, definitely. Every chapter had me on the edge of my seat, not solely to find out what happened next to the leading lady, but also to see which surprises and twists and turns would pop up next around her. Let me tell you, there were an entire universe of them! I love how all of that added up to be one of my favorite books of the year, joining Mrs. Amanda Dykes’s Up From the Sea and Whose Waves These Are as well as Mrs. Kim Vogel Sawyer’s Ours for a Season.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes, because I simply must share a couple of the very quotable lines within this story.

“Conceding a battle didn’t mean losing the war, and I always won when it counted.”

“Even without meeting a person, we can determine a lot about her by looking at the people she allows into her life.”

“Never be ashamed of who you are, your ladyship, for you have something powerful in you.”

“Quiet was the best cure for the noise of my thoughts.”

The faith thread was rich and exactly what I love in a novel. I want more books with this saturation of good, solid faith, please!

A compelling and accessible Victorian romance with strongly overt spiritual threads. Drawing parallels to Jessica Dotta's Price of Privilege series (especially in its literal rags to riches flavour) and Jennifer Delamere's clean Victorian staples in the genre.

Several twists and great pacing add to the suspense with flourish but perhaps the most admirable trait of the book is its non-conforming treatment of the central romance. The reader might assume that it will play in a linear fashion like other books of its trope and ilk, but Politano prefers to stretch out a thread that mirrors many of the issues of social justice that permeate Raina's My Fair Lady-esque tale.

2.8⭐️

This book was good/ok. I appreciated the self-reflection and wisdom from the heroine’s perspective (it’s written in first person) and the plot was interesting and fast-paced. It was unpredictable and kept you guessing throughout.

What brought this book down to 3 ⭐️ for me was that from the start, the circumstances were a little hard to believe and I think my problem was I never really ‘bought’ the story Many times I had to flip back to understand something because it didn’t really make sense. I finished this book because I enjoyed The Love Note and honestly, this author seems like such a sweet person—you can see that come through in her writing, so I felt bad not to finish. 🙂

…But I found myself rushing to read so I could just be done. The story had a lot of potential but it needed more clarity and depth/dimension to make it make more sense…to me at least! Joanna has a beautiful poetic/emotional way of writing. I think this story will appeal to many despite my personal opinions.

Finding Lady Enderly is brilliant and soul-deep. I recently finished this historical romance on audiobook and found it to have all the hallmarks I have come to expect from this author: compelling characters, twisty plot lines, Gothic vibes, natural spiritual metaphors that blaze with meaning, and a pitch-perfect ending.

I think this was more a case of 'me not you' as clearly most people love this book. And it is understandable--it goes for the Pygmalion/Cinderella vibe and what's better than a good rags to riches story?
I just don't read Christian romances anymore and I didn't realize that is what I was signing myself up for. While this wasn't as egregious as most, it wasn't subtle.
I also struggled with what era this was supposed to be set in. It sort of reminded me of being a kid where all I knew about ye olden days was that women wore dresses and men were in charge. And that's kind of how I felt this book went. I couldn't figure out why Raina got bossed around by every male character, even the ones supposedly of lower rank than her.
It just feels all the stranger because this is set in a very specific time in history where you would think it would be easier to illustrate historical accuracy.
But overall I would say this is clean and easy to read.

I love it when I discover a new author to add to my go to list! I have seen many reader recommendations for Ms. Politano books, but am embarrassed to say, this is the first book of hers that I have read. I was not disappointed. She is now on my must read list!! Fans of Jessica Dotta will enjoy this book.

In Finding Lady Enderly, Ms. Politano gives the reader a brilliant Gothic romance, filled with mystery and romance. With the skill of a masterful storyteller, the underlying theme of finding one's identity and purpose in God is woven seamlessly into the story adding depth to an already brilliant novel.

I love the fact that Politano switches from first person to third person when she is telling the story from Raina or Sully's points of view. In Raina, we have an endearing heroine, flawed but full of heart. And to have a hero that never fails to come to the rescue, continuously demonstrating his unfailing love through the avenues of music and books..."Be still my heart"- and the message passing system, need I say more. The secondary characters are also fleshed out in the most marvelous way. I adored Bradford. Most of all, I loved the pearls of wisdom in the quotes from the Diary of a Substitute Countess at the beginning of each chapter.

A couple of my favorite quotes:
"The weakest version of the real you is stronger than the best imitation of someone else."

"One can only ignore rotting insides for so long before the ruin seeps out."

"I never needed a new identity-just a better understanding of the one who gave it to me."

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book the author/publisher. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Finding Lady Enderly by Joanna Politano is truly a work of art, a gift to the historical Christian fiction fan.
Captivating from the start, the first chapter was full of romance, intrigue and beautiful words. What a wonderful way to entice the reader. This book is a gem, my favorite genres of historical and mystery rolled into one extraordinary book. I love the quotes at the beginning of each chapter from The Diary of a Substitute Countess: “Many people who go out looking for themselves will become lost, for they look outside themselves or inward, rather than up to the God who we reflect.” There are many profound truths in each entry.
Raina, the rag girl, is asked by a solicitor to journey to Rothburne Abbey to take a job that will completely change her life of poverty. With next to no information, she takes on the persona of Lady Enderly, harder than Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion.
Raina goes by many names: Ragna, Lady Enderly, Cinderella ; but will she finally find her true identity in God? “It is important to remember who you are. Names have great significance, and we cannot let the world twist them.”
Ms. Politano uses well loved, classical literature in a unique way as a means of communication between two who cannot openly converse. I eagerly read each page for new clues to the mystery of Lady Enderly. A surprise in every chapter. This book has many spiritual truths cloaked in exquisite language waiting to be discovered. It is very reminiscent of The Price Of Privilege series by Jessica Dotta or a Wilkie Collins mystery with many threads to unravel.

**Special Note** I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is a little intriguing. Imagine someone plucking you off the streets and carrying you away to some estate where you are being introduced as a lady of the manor. You now wear fine gowns instead of rags. People treat you as someone worth knowing, rather than turning down their noses at you. It's amazing what the right dress and title can do! You spend days and weeks pretending to be someone that you're not, just to keep up a ruse. But what happened to the real lady of the manor? That is where things get mighty interesting.

It's an interesting tale and I enjoyed reading it. This is most suitable for anyone wishing a clean read.

I loved the mystery of Lady Enderly--finding out the true reasons that Raina needs to pretend to be her. I especially loved that it wasn't straightforward and easy to guess where the story was going. Raina is fairly street-smart, but she's also impulsive and a bit of dreamer, which gets her into this mess (and partly what keeps her from getting out). I enjoyed the little ways she finds to defy expectations, though, and the way she uses book quotes as secret communication with Sully.

Identity is without a doubt the theme of the story, focusing on the circumstances we let define us versus who we truly are--who God says we are. There's definitely an allegorical feel to the story, which seems a little heavy at times, but it certainly provides food for thought.

Thank you Revell for the complimentary book. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions are my own.

“The weakest version of the real you is stronger than the best imitation of someone else.”

For me the highlight of this story was the mystery and suspense. It was intriguing and even though the villain was revealed, there was so many twists and turns and a lot of the revelations I did not see happening.

Then there was a few other factors which added to the enjoyment of this novel, Sully being one.
I also loved all Raina learned about who she really is and where to find her identity.

An enjoyable audiobook.

I have quite mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I found it to be a propulsive and engaging story. I think it was well-written and the faith message was quite beautifully woven throughout. I like how the author focused on the theme of identity, both our identity as humans and in Christ. But the entire foundation of the book didn't quite make sense to me. The rags to riches trope wasn't as convincing and logical as I would have liked it to be, especially given it was set in the Victorian era. I had to suspend belief for the entire story to work. I do feel this plot line would have made more sense in a different genre like fantasy rather than historical fiction. This is just my opinion and my experience with the book. I overall enjoyed it but felt it was lacking.

Ms. Politano once again exceeded my expectations in "Finding Lady Enderly!” This book is a work of art. At face value it’s a beautiful Christian historical romance. But interwoven throughout is a beautiful allegory.

"Finding Lady Enderly" by Joanna Davidson Politano is like a unique fairy tale, with a “Cinderella” and “My Fair Lady” feel to it. There are also a lot of allusions to classic literature and a permeating Gothic tone to the story. The setting is in a mysterious Abbey that contains an old library. Like I mentioned above, Ms. Politano weaves in an allegory about one’s relationship with God; specifically about knowing who we are in Him, letting Him tell us who we are and what our real name is.

I also really enjoyed the spunky heroine Raina and the faithful hero, Sully. Raina loves adventures. Throughout the story, she learns more about who she is and whose she is. One of my favorite parts of the book is how Raina and Sully could only really communicate with one another through secret messages in books. It is so romantic and I love how Ms. Politano picked some beautiful quotes from classic literature for the star crossed lovers to express themselves to one another.

"Finding Lady Enderly" is a gripping story that you won’t want to miss!

Content: This is a clean read. Some examples of the content are: it’s implied that a woman is afraid a man will take advantage of her (but he doesn’t); characters drink alcohol.

Rating: I give this book 5 stars!

I want to thank Joanna Davidson Politano, Revell and LibraryThing Early Reviewers for the complimentary copy of this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review. A wonderful novel centering on a woman’s longing for identity and belonging and the tangled web she weaves when swept up in a deception she did not agree to but must uphold for a loved one’s safety.

Very atmospheric. I could picture it all vividly. I really enjoyed the main character’s perspective and struggles. She was a flawed yet hopeful character. My first read by this author but it won’t be my last.

Is there truly a Lady Enderly? Inquiring minds want to know.
Readers you will just have to read this fascinating book with it's twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.
I was waiting on pins and Needles to see if Netgalley would approve and yay!! They did!! I finished this delightful book in one day!! Today in fact. That's just how good this story was well written.
I love this author's writing because I can tell from this book that it comes from the heart and I really believe that God has guided her to write this.
One such verse is SOS:6 (Song of Solomon) took me a few mins to figure this out because that usually a ship's distress signal.
I will say the hairs on the back of my neck kind of rose up a little cause I wasn't sure where this was leading.
I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. It's a sort of Cinderella tale from rags to riches and y'all know the rest.
Lady Enderly truly has a wonderful personality. I love it and I love her!! She's strong in her Faith until the end!! And that's a good thing! I felt like I could see a special glow whenever she was truly happy. I could sense her sorrow when she wasn't.
The shady characters like Victor Pendergast is what makes this story interesting. It seems like he just appears out of nowhere.
I think the true mystery is Sully. Now he really mystified me. His part in this story is real interesting.
But what it all boils down to nothing is really as it seems.
The best part about this book is hope. There's a wonderful messageat the end but I'll let you readers figure it out! Let me know if you do!!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher with no compensations received. All opinions are my own!!
P. S. Be prepared to spend the whole day reading because you won't want to put it down!
