Mai Krishna Hoon- (Trials and Triumphs in Mathura ) Volume 2 by Deep Trivedi-(Mathura main sangharshsheel jeevan ki dastan) Story up to now- Shri Krishna’s birth in prison, his transfer to Gokul by Vasudev, exchange with daughter of Yashoda and Nanda, bringing up between gops- gopis, cows and other per animals at grassland near river Yamuna, fight with Putna, Kesi, love of Radha, Kalia nag, invitation to Mathura, killing of Kublyapeedh elephant, meeting Rukmini and her brother Rukmi of Kundanpur, killing King Kansa is narrated in first volume. Volume 2- Chapter 1- Refusal to accept the throne of Mathura kingdom- Second part begins with meeting at Mathura palace chaired by Ugrasen and organised by the Commander in chief of the Mathura Army. Ugrasen is active and a quick decision taker. Commander invites all the guest Kings and their families to the palace Court room. Urgasen is Shri Krishna Nana (mother Devaki’s father). He blesses Krishna and offers the Chair of King of Mathura and some more points of decision. Shri Krishna refuses to accept Kingship and so the chair reverts to Ugrasen. It was decided in the meeting that Kansa’s last rites be performed on royal manner. Next day in second meeting it is decided that ministers from Magadh kingdom may be relieved back to Magadh as the finance of Mathura are running low. Rukmini meets Krishna as says that it is not a proper decision to leave the Chair of King because a king has three qualities- he takes care of his chair, he thinks and plans for his people, third, he is supported by his people. She also said that in his life Krishna may never get another opportunity to become king again and this be his sorrow, as this decision is his historical folly. Rukmani is a bold girl and even though her brother Rukmi pulled her to return, she kept smiling on Krishna. Krishna had to achieve his new dreams about betterment of Mathura kingdom, next being to marry Rukmini. Ugrasen kept a small chair near him for Krishna in the Durbar hall. A chariot was gifted to Krishna. Krishna soon learnt to ride the chariot. Guests from Vrindavan and other guests returned back. Krishna and Balram took 100 cows on lease from the palace and started his sweets shop. According to the book, at his juncture Krishna was 18-year-old, Rukmini was 13-year-old. Chapter 2- Krishna Balram soon learnt palace etiquette. Nanda and Yashoda visited them. Both children were so happy to meet them. They remembered Radha and other friends back at Vrindavan. Next issue was some affluent Yadav families who had shifted from Mathura because of atrocities of Kansa, returned and demanded that their lands, houses and shops be returned back to them. Krishna proposed that half of their lands, shops be returned to them but tax rates be doubled and levied on them. Kansa’s both wives returned back to Magadha. Soon it was informed that Jarasndh had negotiated with neighbouring kings to join him and attack Mathura. Krishna suggested in the war meeting that as the Magadh army is coming from far away, we should plan delay tactics and make an effort that food and shether is not available to their army. This will weaken them. Prominent Mathura Kingdom warriors are Satrajit, Satyaki, Chitrak, Shyam, Yuyudhan, Rajadhidev, Mudhur, Shavphalak, Prasen while on the Magadh side were Jarasandh, Shalwa, , Badhik, Gonard, Dantavakra, Somak, Chekitan, Shatdhanwa, Vidurath, Jaidrath, Rukmi. After coming to Mathura, Balram practised Mace fighting. Jarasandh army fought for 27 days but could hardly enter the town of Mathura. Jarasandh fought with mace with Balram but their fight though according to rules of the game, remained indecisive. Magadh food stock was burned in the night. Magadh army had to return back. Rukmi fought with Krishna. After the war, water wells, roads, houses were repaired. Treasury was empty because of war expenses. It took three months for life to return to about normal Chapter 3- Meri Shiksha- Kingdom of Mathura had a strong team of spys, informants and emissaries who informed that Jarasandh had collected an army which was moving towards Mathura to fight to finish. Satyaki informed Krishna that Satrajit, Kritverma, Shatdhanwa had called for an urgent meeting of the war Council to discuss the Magadh army attack. Vasudev and Akrur also attended this meeting. Krishna was not invited. Reason was that these chiefs wanted Ugrasen to ask Balram and Krishna to leave Mathura. By this, peace could be bartered with Jarasandh. Except Ugrasen, the whole council was unanimous. Two days later, Krishna visited the King’s palace and found that Guru Sandipani of Ujjain was sitting with Ugrasen. Ugrasen requested Sandipani to take Balram and Krishna as his disciples. Sandipani agreed and told Krishna that discipline was necessary in his ashram. Sandipani ashram was a safe place as Kings do not attack Ashrams of teachers. In the Ashram, there were 15 students. Vindh, Anuvindh were sons of King of Ujjain while Sudama was a Brahmin. Students were divided into three groups. All 5 of them Balram, Krishna, Vindhya, Anuvindhya, Sudama were in one group. Chapter 4- Atmbodh- The Book describes the thinking of Krishna. His dialogues with others. The description of Krishna’s thoughts is long and verbose. Readers are interested in reading the dialogues of other participants of the narrative. Shevetvindhya was one student who became friendly with Krishna. Life in the Ashram was tough. Students had to perform daily routine work themselves. With teaching, in the evening, a question and answer session were organised. Students had to go from house to house to beg for and collect food. One day, Rukmini visited Ujjaini and saw students beg for food. She gave fruits and grains to Krishna. Later, she recognised him. She said that education is about bravery and being a recluse. Krishna killed Kansa and did not accept the throne of Mathura. Thus, Krishna is brave and also a recluse. Nothing more need to be taught to him. Krishna and Sudama were asked to cut and bring dry wood for the kitchen. Both left for the nearby forest. It started raining. They found shelter behind a rock. Lightening, rain and cold wave started. Sudama was afraid of death while Krishna enjoyed this period of peril. Sudama had been given grains to eat. Sudama did not share with Krishna. Krishna thought about what Sandipani’s teaching, “A person should lose himself, then he can find God or consciousness.” Krishna played the flute and lost himself in God. Chapter 5-Guru Dakshinaa chukane ke liye Panchjanya se takransa-Chapter 5- Acharya Sandipani and Guru Maa asked us to free their son Punerdutta from the kingdom of Panchjanya. Panchjanya had requested Guru Sandipani to teach his son. Guru refused. Therefore, Panchjanya kidnapped Punerdutta. Up to this time, Guru had taught many royal students but he did not ask any of them to help him rescue Punerdutta. Guru informed that first Balram and Krishna should meet who knew the whereabouts of Panchjanya. On the other side, Jarasandh had asked all his compatriot kings to find Balram and Krishna and kill them. Sandipani provided a chariot to the two brothers for the journey to Kushsthali. Javik informed that Pandhjanya was a dacoit who looted villages situated in Prabhas area and recovered security tax, he was owner of ships and sold and transferred goods on sea routes. Javik could take both brothers to Panchjana as guarantors of his payments and bail him out. Panchjana army asked them to board in two ships. When the ships started, they found that it is full moon night and weather in the sea is so bad that the ships can capsize. Krishna asked for a solution to this situation. It was suggested that the sails have been tied to the high mast which as to be opened by cutting the rope. Krishna cut the rope with the help of this disc. Thus, he was in confidence of the cast of the ship which included one Minister Tamas and ship captain Chandak, while the second ship drowned. When they reached the coast, Panchjana was informed about the incident of drowning of one of the ships because the sails could not be opened in time. Panchanjana order capital punishment to both the Minister and the ship captain. Krishna interrupted that the two had saved on ship, thus, the two needed to be rewarded. Panchjana agreed. Panchjana sat on a throne covered inside an iron cage, thus it was difficult to kill him. Krishna to the minister and ship captain in confidence about his plan to kill Panchjana. After 15 days, a ceremony was planned where Panchjana was celebrating in the open. Entry of Panchajana was marked by blowing of a conch shell named Panchjanya. Krishna killed Panchjana with the spinning disc and took the conch shell Panchjanya was his gift. His friends- Minister and ship captain took control of administration. Minister was declared king. Balram Shri Krishna returned back with Punerdutta and returned him to Guru Sandipani. Chapter 6- Mera Ran chod kar bhag jana-Chapter 6- Mera Ran chod kar bhag jana- When Balram- Shri Krishna returned from Vaivastpur with Punerdutta, Chandak gave him a fortune – gold, jewels etc. Which was being carried in a chariot. Guru Sandipani informed Krishna that Jarasandh’s men were looking for him and they planned to annihilate Balram- Krishna. Classmates of Krihsna, Vindh, Anuvindh informed Krishna that he could take shelter in their palace at Ujjaini. They met King of Ujjaini, Jaisen. Jaisen was afraid of Jarasandh and did not intend to take these two brothers in their custody but he informed that he could provide them with four chariots to help them. Both returned to Mathura, placed their treasure with their father Vasudev, met Ugrasen and both brothers moved out of Mathura on a chariot. They met Parashuram on the way who suggested that the only safe place to stay for them was Gomantak hill. They need to hide their identity. They moved on towards Gomantak. Chapter 7- Gomatak ki tekri main sharan lena- Balram – Krishna reached Gomantak village. The village was manned by aborigines or tribal folks. When informed that they were directed by Parashuram to perform rigorous penance. Their chief Adeshwar accepted them. Soon both left for upper part of hills on foot. Soon they planned to bring the tribal and built a colony. Parashuram had said that there was once a kingdom there. This meant that there was a treasure in the earth. As the tribal settled, Krishna encouraged them to find the treasure. Also they build road blocks for protecting themselves from Magadh army. The treasure was found and distributed between both parties. Soon Magadh army lead by Jarasandh, Salva, Damghosh were prominent. Balram Shri Krishna and tribal threw large stones at the army moving on the slopes of the hill. Chariots and horses could not climb the hill. Days were wasted. Ultimately, Jarasandh army withdrew. King of Chedi, Damghosh was also a part of the Jarasandh army. After the war was over, he came towards Krishna and introduced himself as their uncle. He informed that Krishna’s brother and close friend Udhav was sent by Ugrasen to locate krishna but he was captured by king Shragalav. Chapter 8- Shragalav ka Udhav to quaid karna- Shragalav was a king who considered himself as God. He must have asked Udhav to address him as God, Uddhav must have refused. Therefore, Uddhav was put in prison. Balram and Krishna visited his palace as devotees. Krishna requested Shragalav king of Karvirpur to him the prison where non-believers were kept. Both went and found Uddhav there. On full moon night, king Shragalav used to move in the city in procession. Here Krishna killed Shraglav with his rotating disc. People and his servans were already angry with him. Soon the prisoners were relieved. Krishna and Uddhav were united. Krishan declared Shragalav’s son Shukradev as king. The Queen mother thanked and provided them with chariots, gold and lot of war materials. The three Balram, Krishna, Uddhav returned to Mathura. Chapter 9- Meeting with Pandavas- Kunti with her five sons Yudhistar, Bhim, Arjun, Nakul and Sahdev visited her brother Vasudev's palace. Krishna Balram met them for the first. During this stay Pandavas told them the story of their life- Kuru dynastry, Hastinapur, Dhirtrashtra, Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya, Duryodhana and Dushshasana. Jealosy for being declared crown prince of Kuru empire. Both understood each other and became close. Chapter 10-Swayamvar of Rukmini- Ugrasen informed Krishna that Satrajit, rich yadav who owned the Syamantak jewel given by Sun God. on praying for Sun God, this jewel delivered gold every day. His daughter was Satyabhama. Satrajit wanted that Brahdal, Krishna's aunt's son be declared Crown Prince of Mathura. The logic behind this was that Jarasandh has promised that he will not attack Mathura, if Brahdal is crowned as prince. Ugrasen said that neither was Mathura was recognised by Kings as an independent state nor did he receive an invitation from Kshatriya kings about marriages and Swayamvars- Kundinpur princess Rukmini's swayamvar was organised. She was proposed to be married to Shishupal. In Mathura, Krishna suggested Ugrasen that as Mathura Kingdom was not invited to swayamvar at Kundinpur, the next proposed aspirant for the chair of heir apparent, Brihadbal should go to Kundinpur and get the swayamvar postponed. Brihadbal refused to and face the wrath of Jarasandh. Therefore, Krishna was declared hei apparent and he moved to Kundinpur with a large retinue of chairots and paraphernalia. He moved in the city of Kundinpur so that people could witness that he was yet not invited. This created pressure on King Bhishmak of Kundinpur. Soon, his deputy commander Shvetketu visited Krishna with an invitation. Shvetketu was classmate of Shri Krishna at Sandipani gurukul. Krishna visited King Bhismak and requested that as Mathura kingdom was not invited, the swayamvar be postponed. King Bhishmak agreed to postpone the swayamvar. Next day, Krishna attended the lunch for all kings. He met Jarasandh and planned to return to Mathura. Earlier books of Krishna are by other authors while this book has been written in autobiography form. More and more space has been grabbed by thinking mind of Krishna. The other participants are low key. still ti is quite an interesting way to read about life of Krishna. It is a good read book.

I really enjoyed this read as it potrayed Krishna's life as a normal being rather than a god. He was always one step ahead of his foes and when you think he had lost control of the situation, you might want to think again. The storytelling was fantastic. 10/10 would recommend to someone who is interested in Indian mythology.

One thing: i started off with this book instead of the first one so I was kind of clueless at the start as it was abrupt. I tried searching for the first book online and I cant seem to find it anywhere. Help anyone?

This series is about Krishna narrating his life story in great detail. What is unique about this book's perspective is that it portrays Krishna as human with no knowledge of his divine nature. Hence his elaborate descriptions on how he learns the lessons of life and accomplishes great things makes for an interesting self-help book. This book and the first volume have their moments of deep insight into arguably one of the most complex, controversial (real or mythical depending on your belief) hero that ever lived. As a story however it moves at a very slow pace, since almost half the narrative is taken up by the narrator's detailing of his thought processes and the traits he demonstrates in almost everything he does.

The other frustrating part is that after having read Volumes 1 and 2, I find that later volumes are nowhere to be found.
