Horngren’s Cost Accounting defined the cost accounting market and continues to innovate today by consistently integrating the most current practice and theory. This acclaimed, number one market-leading book embraces the basic theme of “different costs for different purposes.” It reaches beyond cost accounting procedures to consider concepts, analyses, and management. This latest edition of Cost Accounting incorporates the latest research and most up-to-date thinking into all relevant chapters. Professional issues related to Management Accounting and Management Accountants are emphasized. Chapter topics cover the accountant's role in the organization to performance measurement, compensation, and multinational considerations. For future accountants who want to enhance their understanding of–and ability to–solve cost accounting problems.
I think it's only fair that I get to count this towards my 2024 reading goal, given that re-reading and reviewing this a million times for CPA PEP is why I haven't finished any other books in months .
This book desperately needs a good editing job. It could easily deliver all the information more clearly if it were 2/3 the length. That said, I got what I needed out of it. Good exercises, as well.
I suppose it is hard to rate a text book that is geared for accounting concepts that are very mathematical in nature. But, this book was relatively easy to understand, okay organization, and certainly did the job for the class (I learned the material). I would have liked to see some electronic resources as well. Not only did the book not come with a CD (to download the many, many spreadsheets I had to create in order to do the work), it also failed to have ANY resources from the publisher. No website with quizzes, practice cards, etc, like many other accounting textbooks have. Basically every chapter requires the student to create and use a spreadsheet in excel in order to do the work. Without any templates from the publisher, I spent a lot of time just putting the spreadsheets together. Now, I am very good with excel, but I wonder for those people that aren't so good?
Additionally, publisher resources like online quizzes, summaries, etc, are vital to success in the class. It is a major fail that these resources were not available for students.
Only one god knows how much time I spent translating and learning this book! ( 4-5 hours every day) Especially when you have taken many summer classes. However, There are many problems, to much information, and in some cases is not well explained. The exercises are very complicated and the most beautiful part is, in the cost accounting book exams are not related from the book. This makes things even harder. I started to read the book with all the pleasure because I may need it my job, but I'm ending with headaches.

A very interesting baccalaureate/college level textbook. I learned so much about accounting for my small business from this book.
I've had many international editions before, but this one was specifically for India. Apparently their numbering system is a bit different; between that, the names and the format of the book, it was really hard to read, and the problems in the back of the book weren't the same either. FYI--Pearson Int'l editions apparently suck hard-core. I've never had any problems with McGraw Hill, though.
This book is extremely hard to read and the homework questions are really hard. This is one of the hardest textbooks I've read. It doesn't help that my class is difficult too. I would not recommend this book. I'm glad that at least my professor told us that there is an e-version of it online so I didn't need to buy a hardcover copy.
The textbook was useful and it did teach everything it said it would. I felt that the explanations were extremely wordy and the book could have been significantly shorter, say 2/3 as long. Made it very hard to read all 22 chapters in the alloted time for class. Took a lot of time away from other courses as it took roughly twice as long to read a chapter.
A comprehensive and extensive textbook about cost accounting. A worth read for every who is interested in managerial accounting.
The only issue of this book is that it lacks continuity and certain information which should be in one single chapter is scattered through the whole book.
Provides key data to managers for planning and controlling, as well as costing product, services and customers, great value in personal financial management
Final exam in a couple days... finishing up Chapter 23 just now. Thank god this book was useful, the professor was not. Dazzling as accounting texts go.
Used as textbook by Prof. Yuji Ijiri, Graduate School of Industrial Administration, Carnegie Mellon University for MBA-level Managerial Accounting course, Fall 1980.
