A hedge mage with a tie to a vampire elder. What could go wrong?

Nearing the end of my ER training, I should be spending my days getting ready for my first real job. Instead, now that I know I’m a hedge mage, I study magic, trying to figure out how I can use it and whether I have a specific talent. When one of my new magical friends comes to me for help with a murder, somehow I have the connections necessary to figure out what happened—and why they were killed.

Solving the mystery brings me deeper into the magical world, but is that what I want? When someone close to me nearly dies, my knowledge of medicine isn’t enough and I have no choice but to chase the magic in me.

If I can discover my talent in time, I might be able to survive what’s coming—and stop another from gaining power no mage is meant to possess.

I didn't like this as much as the first one. Even though there was action there didn't seem too much that happened. That may be because Jen Stone spends too much time saying she doesn't understand what is happening and trying to get a few minutes to figure it out. Then she seems to be wandering around aimlessly without much of plan most of the time.

There were some interesting things that happened here, particularly the growing bond between her and the vampire, which isn't romantic. More is also revealed about the shadowy organization that she encountered in the first book, but there are more questions than answers.

I do look forward to the next in the series to see where this goes.

With this book Jen finds herself being pulled into the magical world more, but this time around she doesn't hesitate to find help where she knows she can. It's interesting who Jen finds herself with and why, how a bigger political move in the background seems to be affecting her, causing a very odd alliance of sorts. It was nice to see this alliance working together to thwart things, but I'm sure this will only be the beginning.

Having ready the authors other series. I decided to read this one. Now on the second book in and it does not disappoint. It's really well written and had me hooked from beginning to end.

Jen is now starting to grow more and more as a character. Can't wait to find out what happens next!

Would definitely recommend reading the first book in this series before starting this one.

Good read

I enjoyed the book as a fun vacation read. Some of the medical is hard to believe. Go for it if you want a quick fun read.
