In the jaw-dropping conclusion to the Age of Darkness trilogy, hearts will shatter, cities will fall, and a god will rise.

"
Solidifies Katy Rose Pool's status as one of the best fantasy writers of the 21st century."
Popsugar on As the Shadow Rises

Following the destruction of the City of Mercy, an ancient god has been resurrected and sealed inside Beru's body. Both are at the mercy of the Prophet Pallas, who wields the god’s powers to subjugate the Six Prophetic Cities. But every day, the god grows stronger, threatening to break free and sow untold destruction.

Meanwhile, far away from Pallas Athos, Anton learns to harness his full powers as a Prophet. Armed with the truth about how the original Prophets killed the god, Anton leads Jude, Hassan, and Ephyra on a desperate quest to the edge of the world. With time running out, the group’s tenuous alliance is beset by mounting danger, tumultuous romance, and most of all by a secret that Anton is hiding: a way to destroy the god at the price of an unbearable sacrifice. But the cost of keeping that secret might be their lives—and the lives of everyone in the Six Prophetic Cities.

The Age of Darkness trilogy is perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Children of Blood and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes.

this is the kind of finale that does right by the characters, which is all i wanted.

this series as a whole is very character driven, which is to be expected for a story that follows on a ‘chosen ones’ trope. and even though the plot progresses and ends in a way that makes sense, i think most readers will find enjoyment with how the characters’ arcs are concluded. with such a large cast of characters, everyone is bound to have their own favourites, and so its nice to know that regardless of which character a reader connected with, they will be happy with how everything ends.

the only reason im not rating this higher is due to a fault of my own, not the books. i didnt do a reread and the time between installments caused me to lose a bit of interest. so while i was obsessed with the first two books, those feelings didnt really come back for this one. but if you havent read this series, i would highly recommend binge reading the books, as i think it would be an awesome experience. this is the kind of story that really needs (and deserves) to be read as a whole and not in segments.

overall, a pretty great ending. the story feels complete and i know many readers will be happy with how this series is wrapped up. i know i am.

Tercer y último libro de la trilogia The age of darkness.

“No podemos volver atrás. Solo podemos avanzar.

Que he amado y he sido amado.

5/5 stars, what a fantastic emotional ending to this series

"We can't go back. Only forward. We can't undo our choices. We can only make new ones. Different ones" (489)

I have loved absolutely every book in this series and for good reason, it has truly become a new favorite for me. All of it is perfectly built around these amazing 7-8 characters that change the stories with every single action and emotion. There is an amazing world that they travel around with some amazing fantastic elements built-in. I loved how this book focused on especially what people are willing to do for love when the fate of the world is at stake.

In terms of plot, this series is definitely for people who enjoy their stories character-driven. While there is a very large overarching plot thread cascading through the story, we spend so much time with the characters that it's so easy to root for them. Every one of them is given such complex motivations and backstories, that affect the plot in rather startling ways. The dual POVs of all of them are wonderfully done too, right up the alley of six of crows.

Ephyra and Beru have one of the best sister relationships I have ever read about in a fantasy series, it's both heartwarming and painfully sad. Especially in this one, it was really sad what was happening and what Ephyra had to come to terms with. She loves her sister with her entire heart and it's evident throughout this series she is willing to do anything to keep her alive. Beru was burdened with this knowledge and experience whether she wanted it or not, and seeing them both grapple with what they've gone through was heartbreaking. Neither of them deserved the ending they got, but I'm so glad throughout the course of this book they both were able to come to terms with it and love each other more than ever before.

Hassan and Khepri we're probably always the ones I had the least investment in during the series, but I still enjoy their stories overall. I just wish they had been given a bit more attention to bring them up to par with the others. They are both linked to a city that has ties to this entire storyline, but their love for it's people and city isn't brought up enough. It is obvious they both have such a love for the people but they never really were able to do on their promises. However, it was really good seeing them with the others, and watch them give their kindness to them.

Jude and Anton are by far my two favorite characters in this book, they have such a great storyline and arguably one of the most important. Their story begins from the moment that Anton was born, Jude watched the sky reveal itself and felt a pull. Years later they would meet, Jude Weatherborne the captain of the paladin guard sworn the protect the last prophet, and Anton the last prophet. The instant that changed life or death for the prophet was when both of them found their true north. They've gone on such a personal journey together that seeing them in the last book was super emotional, and I will love them forever.

Hector and Illya are two characters that fit in between stories, they have relationships with multiple people in the group and change rapidly throughout the story. Both of them are very complex characters and aren't just on one side. Hector is Jude's oldest friend (and crush) as well ends up being entangled with Ephyra within their history. He starts off as an abrasive young man but eventually grows to have such empathy for everyone in the group and around him. He is one of my favorites as well because of the growth he achieves throughout the series. Illya is Anton's older brother, who treated him horribly in their childhood and is causing trouble in their older lives as well. He was also very complicated in the beginning but seeing how many ways he affected the story was very interesting, I am happy he was a greater part of it in this book.

A good portion of the romances introduced or depicted in this book have been slowly set up over the course of the entire series, and the slow burn is done really really well. I will not spoil those romances as it really takes paying attention to details in the series to see them. My favorite couple has been around since the beginning though, Jude and Anton, the paladin and the last prophet. Their romance has been so achingly tender and true throughout this entire series, and seeing them open up even deeper parts of themselves to one another in this book was so heartwarming. I will love them always and they're so fantastic, from the very beginning of discovering they were each other's true north.

"Love is human. And it is divine" (473)

Overall, this is such a fantastic series I highly recommend it for fans of six of crows and an ember in the ashes for similar vibes and character development. The story is fantastically built around each of the characters and the end of the world. Every piece is about humanity and their desires and loves, and it's really one of my favorites.

there are some really good things i love in this book and it's really well-written (this whole series is) - the others just happen to be even better, and there were a few choices in this one i personally wasn't a fan of moreso than in the prior books. still 10/10 conclusion, would recommend

i don't remember who i thought the stars of each book were the first time i read them all (okay i checked, my first read of book 2 i said jude and ephyra, and i remember in book 1 i thought specifically that hassan was not) but this second read of book 3 the stars were ephyra and beru for sure. i was annoyed with all the jude/anton stuff in this one (even though i loved them in book 2) and felt katy rose pool could have done wayyyy more with the tangles of choice and the way they were tied together and obligation to protect and serve etc and less with the excessive romantic stuff (repetitive, unnecessary, distracting).

I feel mostly on par about this finale as I did with book two. This series never managed to recapture the magic of book one (unless, after all this, it was just a fluke) but there were enough good moments that make me think I'll be picking up whatever the author does next.

Into the Dying Light is the final book in the The Age of Darkness trilogy and is a great conclusion that manages to wrap up the story in a really satisfying way whilst providing very high emotional stakes and angst for the characters and expanding the lore and mystery of the world. Our cast of characters must work together to stop both Pallas with his religious cult and the evil god lurking inside Bero.

I have really enjoyed this series and while the second book probably holds the top spot as my favourite, I thought this installment really held up and was such an enjoyable ride. I liked seeing all the characters working together and thought the author managed to balance a big group dynamic really well. Each character goes through their own individual journey and I'm going to talk about each of the major characters below:

Jude - Jude in this book is trying to fight to protect his prophet and must reckon with his destiny. I've always liked Jude, he is a great grouchy but sweet protagonist that is really easy to like and root for. I liked his drive and passion to suceed in this book, and also how he reckons with the trauma of his upbringing and how he has been brought up for a specific purpose that he must try and escape from. I really liked how his story concluded and also his relationship with Anton - while I wanted to slap them both over the head at times due to the miscommunication - I loved how sweet and caring they are towards each other.

Anton - Anton is on a mission in this book to fufil his destiny as the last prophet while protecting his loved ones. I really enjoyed his arc in this book, while it did feel like the classic prophesied hero trope it was still really enjoyable and there was a lot of emotional angst along for the ride (see above lol). Anton also learns the important lesson that keeping secrets to protect those you love in what you think is their best interests is not always the best decision.

Ephyra - I've always liked how one of the central relationships in the book is between two sisters and I feel like in this one we really get to explore the dynamic between Ephyra and Bero and deal with the fallout from events in both books 1 and 2. Ephyra is very much a protector for Bero and is trying to do everything she can to help her - althought she must learn that sometimes the best thing she can do is let go and allow Bero to make her own way and I really enjoyed this journey.

Bero - Bero was one of my favourites in this installment, I loved her inner conflict and turmoil she had with the god inside her as well as her bravery and willingness to sacrifice for others. I also really love her inherent kindness and sweetness. I thought the way her character and story wrapped up was really well done and a very poetic ending that fit perfectly.

Hector - I feel like Hector doesn't have his own story but he plays an important part in the others stories, I love the relationship between him and Bero and seeing how that was affected by eventsin the book. Surprisingly I especially liked the dynamic between Hector and Ephyra in this book, they have a lot of resentment towards each other but I liked seeing them slowly start to mend their relationship. I also liked seeing Hector and Judes friendship again after a rocky journey through the series.

Hassan - In book 2 I felt like Hassan was a less relevant character and I thought it was a little bit the same in this one, however I still really enjoy his character and liked getting another perspective on the group dynamic. I do really like his character and I feel lke sometimes he acts as a voice of reason.

Illya - Ever since book two Illya has been one of my favourites, I love his scheming little evil heart. I really enjoyed his story in this one, his path to seeking redemption and forgiveness from his brother. I also LOVE the dynamic between Illya and Ephyra - if you are after actually good enemies to lovers (who both happen to be super morally grey) with excellent angst then look no further!

I loved the exploration of how religion can be used as a tool by the powerful and greedy to manipulate the people, and how history can be twisted to fit a narrative. I always think this is such an interetsing thing to explore and thought it was very well executed. The series has always had religious undertones given the prophets and gods - this installment expanded on those themes very well and I thought had a lot of parallels with our history and even current times.

In conclusion a fantastic ending to a great trilogy which I think is perfect for fans of both adult and YA fantasy alike - full of familiar tropes while still feeling fresh, super loveable characters and relationships to get invested in, interesting magic and prophecy and a look at the intersection between religion, politics and power.

Into the Dying Light is the third and final installment in The Age of Darkness series. I have been waiting so long to get my hands on this final book. Mostly because I've enjoyed the heck out of the previous two. If you thought I was prepared for anything that went down in this, you'd be dead wrong.

The entire adventure was a blast. I found characters to fall in love, like Jude, and characters to seek revenge on. With so many people to keep track of, I never felt like I was being bombarded with their storylines. Each page, chapter, and book just blended so well in my eyes. I also adored the audiobooks because the narrators made everything come to life.

Honestly, so much went down in this one. I almost screamed, cried, and smiled from happiness. The only couple I needed to be safe for the entire thing made my heart soar. It doesn't mean that I had mini heart attacks along the way, because I totally did. Then there's friendships that needed to be mended so that I could be at peace. Yes, me - not the characters.

In the end, the overall conclusion made me happy. I was so invested in everything that I could find no disappointment after hearing the last word. I fell in love with the characters, magic, and everything in between. So happy that I found the time to get through these three books and I can't wait for my next adventure.

This book series feels like such a hidden gem - WHY IS NOT EVERYONE OBSESSED WITH THIS? I am. I am obsessed.

Easily one of the best series I've read.

Incredibly satisfying storylines for all the main characters, even side ones like Illya and Khepri. At times, I'm not a fan of when writers spend a lot of time taking you sentence by sentence through inner monologues on morality/decisions/love, but in this case, Katy Rose Pool made them meaningful and delightful. This gives all the characters realistic voices and attitudes.

Wonderful job keeping the story exciting and unexpected. A wonderful series finale, really felt like justice for the rest of the books. I wish I could reread the series.

This took me a month to finish only because I was savoring every word. What an amazing finale. What an amazing series. I absolutely adore every single POV character. Though I loved most of them from book one, they all grew on me more than I thought possible.
This book felt like the crossover episode I’ve been waiting for for no reason. Yes, all of these characters exist in the same world and have since the first book. BUT THEY FINALLY INTERACTED AND GOT TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER. Watching them bond made me so happy. I screamed several times.
I’m so satisfied with this ending (despite the desire to stay with these characters forever hehehe).
I definitely recommended this series for the yearbook because it deserves so much more hype. I have no regrets.

Fazit

This book broke me, put me back together, and broke me again - but left me with a little hope... I think this might join the ranks of my favourite series AND series finales. This final book was such a wild ride - I laughed, I was stressed, and for those of you who know that I don't often get emotional reading books, I legit teared up multiple times 😭

Sure, there were parts that felt a bit repetitive, but they had new twists with them. And I just love this band of characters SO MUCH. I really wish more people would read this series.

Well, that's my dramatic review since I can't say a lot about a series finale. I will continue to yell at people to read this series.

Note: I've now read this book 3 times and for me it holds up every time!

"No podemos volver atrás. Solo podemos avanzar.

This novel picks up where #2 in the series stopped and gets all the main characters to the end of their fight against the evil god which is out to destroy the world.

Sadly, about a quarter of the way through this final novel in the trilogy, I almost put it down and did not finish. And then ¾ of the way through, I almost put it down again (but had come so far and had no other audiobook handy)! The story in this one just became too far-fetched, rambling, and cheesy. I love fantasy but only when it feels plausible or reasonable on some level. The examples I state here are not spoilers if you’ve read the previous novels in the series. The fact that Beru was able to harness an all-powerful god within her body was just too extreme in my mind. Also, the various levels of power were exhausting to keep up with and sometimes nonsensical—the main characters would defeat a seemingly impossible situations and then later fall to a group of people with no more power than they themselves had.

Another thing that bugs me in general are overly religious storylines in fantasy novels. Even though it is a religion created by the author, if it’s not done just perfectly, I really don’t care enough about some fake belief system whose only purpose is for non-human super-forces to rule over and cause harm to humans. Such is the case here. It just grew tedious. And then there is an all-powerful prophet who regrets that they’ve created this entire difficult situation for the characters. Oh paleeze. The romantic relationships felt sappy instead of genuine. I’m really having a hard time coming up with anything I loved about this one.

It’s tough to do trilogies that can maintain their momentum in all three novels. It’s often that the middle book is the disappointing one because the author’s manipulation from forcibly inflating the story arc shows. But it’s downright depressing when you’d been enjoying the first two novels and then the final installment sags so much. Plus, this novel was WAY TOO LONG!

On top of my downwardly spiraling opinion of this trilogy the further I got, the audiobook narrator was so annoying in this one. I had docked him some points in the last novel because of some of his vocal choices with the characters. But his new problem with this novel was that, when he was not voicing a specific character, his “narrator” voice was whispery—almost as if he was trying not to wake a sleeping person in the next room. This tone did not match the tone for a fantasy action novel and would have been better for a bedtime story. His reading alone almost made me stop listening to the audiobook. But I did not have access to a Kindle or hardcopy edition of this novel so I persevered. I give him a B- because he definitely contributed to my poor opinion of this novel. I would have scored him even lower except he did still display a great variety of voices for the characters.

wow. I think this just got me out of my fantasy slump and I'm kind of mad this series is over.

it's been a while since I read a fantasy series and-- WOW I can't believe I ever forgot the amazing thing that is fantasy books.

the plot, the world building, the characters, the suspense, IMMACULATE, such an amazing finale!

you know how in a book with multiple povs you have to wait until all the characters come together or meet each other? well it took almost three books but it was so worth the wait!! like I was screaming any time someone was missing a piece of the puzzle that a different person had

I'm not sure I'm making any sense😭 but go read this trilogy bc I don't see enough people taking about it!!

WOW. What an end to a magnificent series. I adored these characters and their journey. Katy Rose Pool is an auto-buy author for me. She built an incredible world and breathed life into an array of characters that managed to make me laugh, cry, and make my heart pound. This is an amazing series, that I hope more people come to love.

My opinion of this book is a weird one, because up until the very end, I was largely disappointed by this finale. I blame this largely on the pacing of everything, and had this been fixed, this book could have very easily been a 5-star finale (which is very tough to do!)

Another big issue going into this one is that due to the second book, I went in only really invested in Anton and Jude. I'd grown disinterested in the other POVs, so a lot needed to happen in this book to make me fully invested in every aspect again. And I had high hopes, since the second book ended with so much chaos happening, but with all the characters in the same place again. Unfortunately, the first 25% of this book is them once again being split up and trying to team back up (sort of, it's more that certain individuals want to save other certain individuals, and it turns out they all happen to be in the same place that they need to be saved from). It picked up once again after, when they're teamed up and have a solid plan, but when that plan unravels... the team splits up again. This constant splitting up means that over the course of this series, the group doesn't actually spend all that much time together, which makes some of their intense positive feelings about each other ring false, except for the few pairings or trios that did spend the majority of the books together (Illya and Ephrya, Anton and Jude, Ephyra and Beru, Beru and Hector, Hassan and Khepri). It was only those relationships that ever felt like they had any strength to it, especially since when the groups got larger, they couldn't stop fighting. We didn't see any true camaraderie until the final few chapters, which is where I started to really love this book.

The ending itself is what brought this book to 4 stars, rather than 3. I really enjoyed how it all went down, and it gave me back the same intense emotions as the ending of book 1 did. While the resolution to the overarching problems could've been better woven into the rest of the book, instead of one side character just spouting the solution on their deathbed, the solution itself did a good job of tying the story together, and further tying the characters themselves together as well. There was also enough sacrifice and change that it didn't feel just, miraculous that they ended up winning. It was a solid ending to the story overall, and I especially loved the extended epilogue. While it was an overall happy ending, it wasn't too perfect of a happy ending, and it showed how much work the world and characters still had to do, while still giving them some peace and respite after the hard events of the book.

Overall, there was a lot of potential in this series, and while I did enjoy it a lot overall, issues with pacing and character relationships (more so in the overall group rather than on an individual level) made the series not as great as I'd hoped. Anton and Jude were excellent, though, and their ending (and the lead up to it) made me cry so many times. I'll definitely be trying whatever this author writes next, and hope the issues I had with this series are resolved a bit more!

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review*

The third and final book in The Age of Darkness trilogy.

This is a very character driven story, which I enjoyed for the most part. Jude and Anton are still my favourite of the characters, and I was most invested in their story, even though all storylines are intertwined with one another. I was intrigued by the story, but just as the first two books did previously, this began to drag after awhile. I read the first two books awhile ago, and I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had binged them all together actually remembered little details I had forgotten. I do think the series was wrapped up nicely in the end, and I am happy with where the characters ended up... but it was just a bit too long to hold my attention fully.
