Spirit Hacking: Shamanic Keys to Reclaim Your Personal Power, Transform Yourself, and Light Up the World

Rate this book
"This guy does next level stuff. I have worked with him and I have no idea how or why he is able to do some of the things I have witnessed. Science is just catching up with biohacking. It's time to start studying spirit hacking and how Shaman Durek can achieve the tangible results he achieves."
--Dave Asprey, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Bulletproof Diet, Silicon Valley investor and technology entrepreneur

In Spirit Hacking: Shamanic Keys to Reclaim Your Personal Power, Transform Yourself, and Light Up the World, Shaman Durek, a sixth-generation shaman, shares life altering shamanic keys allowing you to tap into your personal power. Through new information you will banish fear and darkness from your life in favor of light, positivity, and strength.

Shaman Durek's bold and sometimes controversial wisdom shakes loose our assumptions about ourselves and the very world around us. He ultimately teaches us how to step fearlessly out of this Blackout (the age of darkness we are currently experiencing) and access a place of fierce empowerment by use of tools and techniques of timeless Shamanic tradition. This transformation is both personal and collective; as individuals step out of darkness and begin to experience the light, we bring our loved ones and communities out of the shadows as well.

Shaman Durek inherited a rich legacy of ancient wisdom and now shares this knowledge for a modern context. He advises everyone from celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Nina Dobrev to innovative executives such as Bullet-Proof Coffee founder Dave Asprey.

Spirit Hacking shatters readers' complacency, giving them tools to navigate the tumultuous times in which we find ourselves. We will emerge from this period happier, lighter, and more vibrant than ever before.

Shaman Durek offers practices to spiritual seekers who are looking for ways to improve their lives through the use of shamanistic techniques. Like most new age or spiritual books, not everything in here resonated with me. But I will take a few key concepts and jettison the rest.

For starters, I took issue with the title of this book, "Spirit Hacking". It implies that there are some sort of tested and proven short cuts to bringing spiritual dimensions into one's life. I think most readers are wise enough to know that such a thing doesn't exist. To put that sort of label on a work is false advertising to delusional, depending, I suppose, on how much one believes one's own hype.

On the other hand, if "Spirit Hacking" was simply an effort to connect with readers who sincerely want to believe in such spiritual short cuts then this book will probably fill some sort of gap in his or her journey to a desired "goal".

Personally, I took the title as a type of warning flag before I read it. Tread softly here, Heidi, I said to myself. And question everything.

Shamanism, like other semi-organized movements, varies greatly depending upon who is imparting the wisdom and from what tradition. Shaman Durek touches upon topics I've studied from other sources such as there are different types of spirits, various rituals or practices to interact with these spirits and time isn't as fixed as some imagine it may be. But he puts his own unique spin on the information.

I like the empowering side to shamanism. If you have lingering physical or emotional pain, these practices suggest that you can do something about it, today if you'd like. If you'd like to change the world, go within and change yourself, then the rest will follow.

I also like the idea that everything on the planet from plants to animals to places has a guiding spirit or intelligence. If only one knew the way to interact with these intelligences, life itself could become a guide into the mysteries of the spirit. That part of shamanism is pretty cool.

On the other hand, I don't like how some shamanistic movements act like established religions, insisting that their ways or traditions are the only way to go. In addition to the snobbery, I take issue with the manner in which some shaman teach their methods. They fail to distinguish between the real world and visionary space, leading adherents to confuse one with the other or worse, not draw any dividing lines at all.

Shaman Durek's tone can be somewhat abrasive, but if readers are looking for basic shamanistic ideas, they can be found here. Recommended with reservations for new age spiritual seekers.

Other titles about shamanism that you may want to explore if you've read this: This Trip Will Change Your Life: A Shaman's Story of Spirit Evolution, The Way of the Shaman, Active Dreaming: Journeying Beyond Self-Limitation to a Life of Wild Freedom or The Flying Witches of Veracruz: A Shaman's True Story of Indigenous Witchcraft, Devil's Weed, and Trance Healing in Aztec Brujeria.

This book didn't work for me. I didn't mind the modern, casual tone. I didn't even mind the fluent use of the vernacular. I did, however feel that the author held himself up a bit too high in regard and appeared to look down on everyone else. I could have done without the rants on "new-agers" and "bobbleheads" and preferred he stuck with what I chose the book for, learning to move into the liminal spaces. Instead I got something too preachy for my personal tastes.

This book will register well with a select few, but none that run in my circles.

I found this book pretty painful to get through. In one way it's a bit entertaining because Durek constantly calls out others for being narcissistic and ego-driven, while of course he has the biggest ego of them all... But then on the other hand it's also really annoying to see someone so enamored with himself that his own head will probably blow up one day.

Something that irritates me is that it is presented as a workbook wanting to teach you "spirit hacks", but really it doesn't teach you much at all. All of the hacks seem to revolve around bossing spirit around. There is no spiritual and deep connection described in the method he uses to communicate with spirits, it's mostly about saying what you want, "Spirit, give me X and Y...". Often he adds some comments to spirit that sound like they're taken from a sci-fi TV show, like "beam down yellow electric energy into me" and similar. It's like he is treating spirit/God as Siri or an underpaid personal assistent.

He shares many stories from his own life and at first they are kind of fascinating, but then you start to notice a pattern: Durek is the only wise, smart, pure-hearted person and all of the friends and acquaintances he has are presented as stupid and often horrible people. In one story his friends want to offer a homeless man a bottle of water, but Durek takes over, sweeps in and invites the man to have lunch while Durek washes his clothes. Meanwhile his friends are "hiding in the bedroom" and Durek ends up asking them how dare they call themselves spiritual people?!

And last but not least, Durek seems to lack an understanding of basic psychology. Look, I am what many would consider a "very spiritual person", I use tarot, crystals, meditation, and I communicate with deity. But... I cannot ignore the other parts that make up a human. Like the psyche! Durek blames everything on spirits and "the matrix". If someone disagrees with him they're deep in the dark matrix and are full of dark spirits. He blames poor self-esteem on spirits coming up from the underworld and then taking over your mind causing you to feel insecure. I don't want to shit on his beliefs (the way he openly shits on Tolle's beliefs!), but to me that sounds like a concept that could really instill fear into a lot of people.

There are tons of better books for people that wish to learn about shamanism, healing, and spirituality. Tons.

No one to blame but myself for this one.

Here's the problem. Conceptually, I think biohacking is cool, because I came up reading extensively on evolution, Zen buddhism, and the aggressive cyberpunk revival of the mid 90s. Unfortunately, the community surrounding it is insufferable. Ditto for things like paleo dieting. It's the Rick and Morty effect. The show is pretty clever, but you can't tell anyone you think that or you'll get grouped in with people who like Rick and Morty.

I've got an academic interest in shamanism. I say academic to clarify that, as a white, heterosexual cis American male, if I were to announce that I believed myself a shaman, you would have a moral obligation to punch me in my smug mouth.

The other issue is I've pretty much exhausted GoodReads recommendations for books related to books I've enjoyed, so I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel, and nothing good is on the bottom of the barrel. That's why it's the bottom of the barrel.

Walking into a book called "Spirit Hacking", linked to both biohacking and shamanism in the Similar Books category, penned by a guy whose first name is "Shaman" should have served as more than enough warnings to deter me. And yet, still, fool as I am, I plodded on.

The forward is written by Dave Asprey. For those blissfully uninitiated, Dave Asprey is the conman behind Bulletproof Coffee, which is the sad tech movement supported by cherrypicked and dummied-up neuroscience studies that encourages impressionable Silicon Valley elites with poorly tuned bullshit detectors that putting Super Special Bulletproof Brand Butter in their Super Special Bulletproof Brand Coffee somehow bypasses the blood-brain barrier to allow them to biohack their entire neocortex into some vague and ill-defined "greater functionality". The nerds, promised that their brains work the same as computers and that doubling up on this scam will allow them to overclock themselves, they eat that shit right up.

So Dave Asprey writes the intro, and it isn't an intro, so much as a commercial for his scam, but he also brags about how much money he has and how humble he continues to be, and how many cool spiritual adventures he has been on in his quest to be the perfect man, which, of course, he is far too humble and self-effacing to say that he is. However, you certainly can be, if you buy the right coffee, nudge and wink.

I narrowly made it through that when Shaman Durek hit the scene, reading his own book. Ill-advised. He proceeded to tell me that anybody could be a shaman, and he is a shaman, and he knew he was a shaman because he literally died. He goes on to explain this literal death was figurative, since it happened in a spirit journey or drug trance, so not really what literal means. Then he proceeds to get just, really, irrationally angry. Like he's ranting about pretenders to the throne and fake shamans, gatekeeping ayahuasca use and railing against shamans who say other people can't be shamans, even as he says that people who take drugs to become enlightened then get road rage can't be shamans. Same breath. And it's a wheezing breath, because as he's reading his own audiobook, he's getting genuinely angry again. You can hear it in the voice. Why would I listen to a grown man I don't know throw a recorded temper tantrum for 11 hours?

I made it to the next chapter, when he started talking about how he knew he was a shaman because as a child he would hug random people and burst into tears. I cold-stopped when one of the sections was subtitled "My heritage is mystical AF!"

That's enough for me, I think. I'll continue along my wretched life deprived of my personal power. Sorry, dude. The rest of the book might be a transformative, world-lighting tour de force. After that... performance, I'll never know.

The book contains a collection of general spiritual wisdoms and techniques common in the spiritual world. The "hacks" are more psychological and spiritual but not so much shamanic (meaning, it is a spiritual practise but the methods offered are vaguely shamanic). The book contains very little information about the shamanic "world" and its "practices".

Shaman Durek presents a solution to the messed up world. An examination of spirituality often leads - no matter what kind of branch involved - to a similar mindset and view of the world. The analysis of Shaman Durek, called "Blackout", can be found in many other spiritual books. But the result of Durek's analysis has not so much to do with shamanism. Instead it's common sense and systemic thinking.

I just looked at the ratings in Amazon- There were some bad ones yesterday. Strangely they have all disappeared over night and transformed to 5 star reviews. Hopefully a mistake. Otherwise, the whole thing about the matrix seems to be a sham. Please let me be wrong.

This is my current opinion, but I am open. If I have overlooked any fundamental points, I would be grateful for feedback.

Overall this author is on point. He's is reflecting and thinking on the same subjects that I do. We do need to take responsibility for our actions and we need to take care of Earth.

He writes "we continue to shove our heads in the sand, and pretend like nothing’s wrong, and that it’s all working out fine because we have eleven thousand Instagram followers, and our manicure is on fleek, then it’s gonna be painful, and we might very well blow it." Are we really doing this though? Are we really in denial? Do we think someone is going to save us? I never thought this way but I am not like most other people. I think people are frustrated. They want change and it seems insurmountable. (Pew Research Ctr: By the year 2050, 41% of Americans believe that Jesus Christ definitely (23%) or probably (18%) will have returned to earth.) Well I guess I am off on this one.

He also says that people believe the government has their back...I don't think people believe this at all (Did a quick Google search and the Pew research Center says only 17% of Americans trust government so so much for that).

He says that a lot of lightworkers ignore the darkness. This is so true.

Also he is the second spiritual teacher besides my personal teacher who said that dark spirits must be guided or taken into the light. YES. because we all belong with source, not trapped on Earth or the 4th dimension.

I love this book and Shaman Durek. He is very real, authentic, empowering and wise with so much love to the world. But I have to say that this book doesnt do him justice.. I understand that he can be percieved in certain ways and i do not support the way he talks down on some things/people, however i can assure you that he is a beautiful, wise and loving soul, but with a provocative side to him. And that is his intention aswell, because it's just what some poeple need. I believe It's important not to be too quick to judge and read this book with an open mind. Ive listened to many of Shaman Dureks podcast episodes etc so that is why i feel like i know him a bit and see past those expressions into his profound Love.
In his book he brings up a wide range of nuggets of wisdom on how we and the world functions etc, which truly is of great use, but i can also agree on that many things are seen as more "basic" knowledge for those of us who are very familiar with spirituality. I believe it is because he intended this book for anyone, especially those that are new to or unfamiliar with the themes he is bringing up. I guess he is trying to reach out to more People through his modern, sassy and global approach.
So i really reccomend giving this book a chance, i feel that there is great information and insights in there. And if you feel triggered, maybe there's a reason for that which you can grow from? We can always learn from anyone and anything with an open mind and heart.
Much love :)

When I started reading this book, I was thinking "Why did I pick this up? (I borrowed it from the library, by request) What is all this woowoo?" and I almost put it down.

Then, it hit me -- this is some real stuff! It's certainly not your usual self help book, nor is it a run of the mill set of claims like The Secret, but it's a real handbook for bringing you -- yes, you! -- into a place of light.

I'm returning my library copy so others can, just maybe, get some benefit from it. Rest assured, though, that I'm adding it to my Kindle asap.

This was a difficult book to get through. I wanted to read the book to get an impression of Durek as a person, and I was disappointed when I realized the media have him painted a pretty accurate picture. There is so much narcissism, hurt, and aggression in this book, as well as so so so so so so many repetitive words - it made me not want to finish. But I did. It's the first non-fiction book I actually had to dobbel check to make sure it wasn't fantasy.

Shaman Durek offers an interesting and somewhat unique point of view on energy work, spirituality, and shamanism. Not all of the author's advice with resonate or work for everyone, but it was interesting to read and some of the exercises (in specially marked boxes throughout the book), were especially interesting and helpful to explore.

For someone who claims to be all about love, Shaman Durek seems to be pretty angry. His spirit hacks aren’t exactly anything new yet he dishes other new age teachers and mentions them by name. I found this to be distasteful and made me give up on the book. If you are all about love.. you should love other people’s point of view as well, no ?. Or maybe not.

Dave Asprey writing the foreword was definitely cause for concern. The author is really interesting, has a compelling backstory and some interesting exercises. However, there’s some problematic stuff especially towards the end. I like that he has strong beliefs, but I don’t agree.

This book is a giant rant.

He has some good ideas. Some things I did not agree with or did not like. But that's OK. I don't expect a book to be revolutionary for me; a few gems or nuggets and I'm happy.

The main issue is the vibration given while he reads his audio book - especially after the first few chapters. The vibration that comes across is a mixture of anger, frustration, and contempt for and at other humans. I don't know anybody who changed because someone ranted about them. Just give alternative positive solutions.

Love Shaman Durek’s insight and providing motivation on how to live a beautiful life. This isn’t a book that you just read and then put on your shelf to get dusty. He provides spirit hacks and insight on how to get more in touch with your spiritually and Mother Earth, all to help change the world one breathe at a time!

Wow, if there are books that can change how you see the world and change your life, this is one of them. Shaman Durek don’t play and he doesn’t people please he people pushes which I love. Greatness seaps out of this book in owning your love, attention, and devotion in life. We are super human and this book supports that.

Shaman Durek is a modern Shaman teaching us all we need to know to live our best lives!
Simple tricks and practices to support us as we are awakening, growing and transforming.
I also really like how transparent he is about his personal journey and giving us the space to relate and learn from his stories.

Loved every thought and word in this book!

This is exactly what every person in this world needs to read right now. This book should be incorporated into school curriculums from kindergarten and throughout all children’s education.
I learned a lot from Shaman Durek’s teachings in this short book and have already shared a lot of the knowledge with my 7 year old daughter, who absorbed it immediately and started using the hacks for herself in different situations. And she not only loves it, she now takes it as tools for her life.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

This is my year’s first DNF! It started off strong but after a while, I just wasn’t interested in what the author had to say. He charges $2000 for a session with him and that just SCREAMS: SCAM! And my mom has done a lot of deep research into learning shamanism and the first thing they tell you when finding a shaman to work with is: don’t go to someone who calls themself a shaman! They can be a shamanic practitioner but it’s an ego thing to call YOURSELF a shaman. And the author does just that. I also listened to the audiobook that was read by the author and it just was a bizarre experience. I wanted to like this book, I really did. I feel bad for not finishing but it didn’t sit right with my spirit

Life can be challenging and it sends people looking for answers when the truth is what they seek is inside of themselves, they just need to learn how to access it. This book is a deep look into helping one connect with and utilizing that which cannot be seen while asking to have faith in the unknown. Written in a style that gives as good as it gets, the book is filled with no nonsense and gives an honest look at a subject that may be uncomfortable for some but definitely worth reading. If you are looking for assistance with shifting your thoughts and improving your situation, then this is one book for you. I volunteered to read a copy of this book provided by Netgalley.

This is a book for everyone. But that doesn't mean everyone will love it.
What that means is that it benefits us as a whole.

Shaman Durek is blunt and doesn't sugar coat. That will ruffle a few feathers and some readers may feel challenged by his viewpoints. That is a good thing. It fosters growth in a time when that is exactly what we need.

Gift this book to the last person you think would like it. That's who needs to read it.
I love this book and am excited to re-read it and familiarize myself with all the fantastic "Spirit hacks" he shares and gifting it for "Giant years" to come.

I found that this was an easy read since it's compelling and is written in a way that keeps your attention and focus. Shaman does have the gift and he can connect with spirits. He tries to keep what he's saying modern by using words like "Lit" which is both kind of entertaining and grating. I would say that I think he does kind of have an ego issue (thinking you're great is good but he gives me the impression that he feels like he's infallible). I like that he's able to be vulnerable about his experiences and a lot of what he has to say is valuable. Being more humble would help him out but I think he still has a lot of good things to say and share with the world.

i got 2 hours into this 11.5 hour audio book though i should have bailed 15 minutes in. it is one of the worst narrated ebooks i have yet come upon. the author is the narrator. the writing is arrogant and dismissive and the narration is a psychomelodramacomedy mess. having never heard of shaman durek before, i checked out some other videos of him speaking and he was a good, interesting, level speaker. i do not know what state of consciousness he might have entered to record this book and it is unfortunate that the industry let him do this. wasted my time and my money, unfortunately.

This so-called "book" is a waste of paper, and a total waste of time for anyone unfortunate enough to have been scammed into reading it. The author, whose real name is Derek Verrett, makes all kinds of absurd claims about himself in this book that he has actually contradicted in interviews. He cannot seem to keep his story straight even in the book, which has lots of contradictions and sounds like an insecure 15 year old might have written it. Pathetic and painful - worst book I've ever encountered.

Absolutely loved this book. Be prepared to get called out on every shadow and awaken to the truth about our world. It moved me greatly and I could see it being a book I come back to every year just to be reminded of the seriousness of what is truly going on in our world right now and the importance of doing my part to bring in the so-called giant age. :)

The author's choice of name alone was enough to make me disqualify him. But I have a policy, I only put books on hold from folks whose opinions I truly respect. I always give them a try.
