Thank you to @scholasticinc and Troy Cummings for sharing a review copy of Boa Constructor (The Binder of Doom, 2) with the #KidLitExchange Network. All opinions are my own. The Binder of Doom: Boa Constructor will hit shelves on September 3, 2019. Pre-order your copy now.
A creepy machine bat makes its way into Alexander's room one night and steals a wind-up key from one of his toys. He and his friends, all members of the Super Secret Monster Patrol, then begin to notice that other mechanical parts are going missing all over town. The three set out to discover what monster is behind the thefts and foil its evil plans.
Boa Constructor is the 2nd book in The Binder of Doom series and is also part of Branches, Scholastic's young readers line. This book is hilarious and full of adventure. I really enjoyed the focus on STEM themes: building machines, construction careers, and maker camps. The story is engaging and the characters are vibrant. Young readers are sure to love Rip and his hilarious antics. Just reading the table of contents lets you know you're in for a delightful and funny adventure with titles like The Headless Duck, Lefty and Lumpy, and The S.M.O.O.S.H.E.R. The chapters are also the perfect length to encourage developing readers to begin reading on their own. With all of the puns and onomatopoeia words in the book it would also make for a fun read aloud.
This was a quick read. This series is about three friends: Alexander, Rip and Nikki. Together they protect their town from monsters.
In this volume, different machine parts are going missing all over town. It is up to the friends to figure out who is taking them and why. Once the friends find the culprit, they must stop them before they destroy the town.
This series doesn’t feel groundbreaking or anything, but it is fun. The art is cute and complements the text. The story has mystery and humor, without being overly involved.
I am curious as to who is leaving the monster cards our protagonists keep finding. I wonder if the truth will be revealed soon or if it’s something that we won’t learn until the end.
Alexander and his friends, Nikki and Salamander, are trying to solve a mystery. Strange things are happening in their town, this time involving disappearing machinery and metal parts, along with scary creatures showing up and wreaking havoc on the town. Though this particular book can stand along in order to have a true understanding of how this mystery began it is important to have read the first book as this aspect is not covered in this 2nd title. There are certainly hilarious moments in this story which help to balance the scarier parts.
Machine parts are disappearing from all over Stermont. When they aren't busy at Maker Camp at the library, can the SSMP figure out what monster is causing the mayhem before it is too late?
Another fun adventure with the SSMP. Rip made me laugh out loud with his suggestion for a new secret meeting spot. Hand these books to reluctant readers, fantasy fans, mystery fans, and monster enthusiasts.
Notes on content: No language issues or sexual content. The monster threatens the kids, but the only thing injured is a machine (unless you count Alexander's skate boarding accidents).
I am starting to track the chapter books I read to my son because at the end of the day it is a book. He checked this one out at the library. It wasn’t my favorite of our chapter books, but he liked it because it still had lots of pictures.
In this volume, Boa Constructor attempts to destroy the town and the children must work together to stop it. These books are great as they show invention, working together, skills and friendship!
