Riverside #1

A Journey of Three Degrees

Rate this book
In the lively little university town of Riverside, Anna is only two hours away from her parents’ home but in a world all her own. Focused on her studies and plans for traveling internationally after graduation, the normally non-romantic Anna is completely caught off guard by an uncharacteristic captivation that takes hold of her on the first day of her final semester, when she sees her French professor. Though she tries to deny it, Anna’s attraction grows and threatens to throw her into the arms of her best friend, Justin, the greatest guy she knows, or worse, into an academic indiscretion.

Can Anna stay the course and finish her college career strong? Or, will her heart pull her where she knows she does not belong?

Will two weeks in France help Anna recapture the desires that inspired her to pursue her degree so she can work overseas? Or, will the romance of being immersed in all things French deepen her desire for her teacher? A Journey of Three Degrees is an emotional story full of twists and turns from the warmth of a small town to an inspirational sojourn abroad, then back to a loving family home.

Welcome. I am an American author of Contemporary (Women's) Fiction featuring female main characters who take readers along on their journeys. Each includes a passionate romance as part of the backdrop while the protagonist finds her way to personal understanding, maturity, and success through combinations of relationships, life experiences, and education. Being a lover of art, architecture, history, and travel, I weave these into my stories, along with a mix of emotions and a bit of humor.

I invite you to be carried away by my first story in A Journey of Three Degrees and its conclusion in the sequel 360 Degrees Home.

This has been such a refreshing read. I was immediately immersed in this delightful story and invested in what happens to the protagonist, Anna, as I walked alongside her on her journey of self-discovery. The first part deals with her college life —we see how she spends her days in college in Ohio. The descriptions of nature during the winter and spring were so beautiful that I felt that I, too, was staring out of the window from Anna’s dorm and watching the seasons go by. Her first encounter with her love interest was so cleverly written — it was overwhelmingly pleasant. I really loved the opening paragraph which from the onset invites the reader to also retrospectively ponder about life, just like the main character does.

I also felt that the writing style enabled the story to flow like a gentle summer breeze. It was rather soothing to read. The time Anna spends with friends also made me feel like I was part of this tight-knit group, hanging out with them at their favourite bars or restaurants. The quality family time Anna spends with her family is calming and, once again, we are privy to some beautiful descriptions of nature, and the accepting, non-judgmental interactions with family members complements the gentle purity of the depictions of the ocean and the sunset.

A trip to Paris and rural France gives the reader more than a glimpse of this beautiful country. Anna, together with her friend Sophie and her family, take us to places many tourists may not know, and we are treated to detailed and insightful images of art, architecture, and many historical monuments and buildings. The lovely moments spent cooking and eating delectable, mouth-watering French food was another surprising treat that awoke my senses, and the strolls around the manicured gardens added to the beauty.

Throughout the novel, we also witness the author’s knowledge and respect for the French language, and the French customs, as well as her knowledge for history. Anna is a passionate, intelligent woman who is thirsty for knowledge and finding her place in the world.

Overall, it is a story of self-growth, as Anna leaves her college life and has to take the leap into the the world, away from the safe cocoon that college life may offer. What will happen with her charismatic, intelligent, and handsome love interest, as well as her career plans, remain to be seen. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out. A.L. Kent writes beautifully and I look forward to reading more about Anna’s escapades, and her positive outlook on life which is revealed through her introspection. A Journey of Three Degrees is a delightfully sentimental, passionate, and heartfelt read that takes the reader on a journey of the heart, and the pages seep with the protagonist’s thirst for finding meaning and beauty in life. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

A Journey of Three Degrees is the story of Anna's journey out of college into the next phase of life, but there is much more underneath the surface. While there is sex and fantasy, this is no ordinary erotic romance novel. This book is very much a journey into realism. Author AL Kent brings the reader through the everyday life of a young woman in college, through an unexpected affair with her professor, and then into a far away world post-graduation. The author lures you into this affair building the suspense and then pulls the rug out from under you. This novel challenges the line between lust and love, and then makes a huge connection to the importance of our global interconnectedness in history. A deviation of only three degrees can make a world of difference. We're not sure where Anna goes next, so I expect a sequel. On a personal note as a male professor, this was a very interesting psychological and sociological read. This novel is an enjoyable read, and I think young twenty something readers of any gender could appreciate and learn from the narrative. Kent's debut novel shows promise for many more published stories.

Beautiful writing!

I am anxiously awaiting the sequel to this book! The writing was passionately descriptive, leaving you feeling as if you were the main character herself! The affair with her professor was overwhelmingly raw and sizzling without being unnecessarily indecent. Her trip to France had wonderful details about the history and culture to the point that the descriptions of the food left my mouth watering! I am very impressed with this book and the editing was marvelous as I did not see one error! Well done!

A Journey of Love?
Love of journeying? This book is in two parts. In the first, a college student (Anna) falls in love with her professor. It seems a romance bound to fail, and Anna resorts to flirt with a friend. Her love for the professor stops the flirting. Here the first part ends. To get over her confusion and — perhaps — to make something of her life, Anna goes to France for a holiday.
In my opinion, the first part worked well — it was easy to relate to Anna and her friends. The second part was for me less convincing. It was marred with too much description, making me wonder if this was a travel magazine or a novel.
In places, the narrative came across as memoir or true story. Was that intentional? All in all, the author might benefit from mixing the cards differently. AL Kent has potential.

Such a poignant book! I loved the author’s descriptions and willingness to dive into the tough topics. This book doesn’t hold back. Although the ending is bittersweet, there are enough moments of hope to keep you excited for the sequel. I can’t wait to read more!!

The story begins with: “Life unfolds like a mystery. Similar to a puzzle, the big picture eludes us while we go about our day-to-day and pieces either fall into place or are set aside to fit in the future.” That’s Ana’s story, a young college student who decides to follow her dream and travel internationally. Her adventures and friendships in France are fascinating. The description of the scrumptious French dishes and the scenes make you feel like you are traveling along with Anna. I loved all the twists and turns that kept me wondering what would happen next.

It was an interesting story overall and I most enjoyed the tour of France with its historical side trips amid the setting of French family life. The story did have much of a journal or memoir effect. I don't know if that is what the author was intending but I have to admit I would have liked more actual dialogue between Anna and Sophie.

This book narrates Anna's journey, a journey I felt I was part of. Her college life, her trips to Paris... It was like travelling. Credits to the author for her writing stile, which was able to teleport me into her pages.

A forbidden romance mixed with lust, a bit of suspense and some twists. The perfect ingredients that together turned out to be a book I really enjoyed.
