It’s been six years since the Hamilton Hurricane patrolled the skies above Hamilton, Ontario. The thirty-three-year-old once used his elemental powers of Air and Lightning to protect the city from natural disasters, super villains, and criminals. Unfortunately, crime fighting didn’t pay the bills, so he hung up his spandex. Now known as bounty hunter Zack Stevens, he spends his time hunting monsters for money.
While on the trail of a wanted Earth elemental, Zack finds he’s not the only one interested in the job. A Werepanther, a crazy vampire, a Mr. Hyde-type creature, and a blue-skinned alien attempt the bounty, and Zack helps clean up the mess, leaving him with a sense of responsibility for this odd crew who are now homeless and injured.
Thanks to a multimillion-dollar contract on one of their group, the hunters become the hunted, and Zack and his new acquaintances strike up an alliance. He has always worked alone but must find a way to lead his ragtag crew if they are to survive attacks by the underworld they fight against. A Bounty with Strings leads readers on a fast-paced adventure starring an unlikely group of companions who must learn to trust each other even as they work to outwit those who would destroy them.

Born in the UK and growing up in Southern Ontario, Canada, Markus has been a computer geek and WWII history buff all his life. It took a midlife crisis for Markus to realize his dream of becoming an author and after twenty-five years as an IT professional, he turned to writing fantasy fiction. When he is not writing, cooking or taking care of his wife and three cats, Markus is an avid reader, enjoys food and wine pairing, playing video games, and building Lego.
A former superhero, now bounty hunter, meets up with a quartet of super powered women. There's definitely more than a hint of a harem theme. They collect a bounty or two, then it seems one of the women has a contract on her head, which brings the villains out of the woodwork. More danger...and more bounties!
Not bad. Not as sleazy as some harem type books, though.
A Bounty with Strings totally fulfilled the brief of its genre - the elemental fighting style, the 'found family' (kind of), and the disillusioned hero - whilst simultaneously delivering countless innovative, exciting and often amusing new ideas.
Zack is an exploration, in part, of what could become of any superhero/vigilante type, should they lack a miraculously bottomless fund to keep them in the business. Instead, as a bounty hunter, Zack still retains the fighting spirit he once had, but puts his skills to use in a new and different way - and as the plot develops, his crimefighting history plays a real part in how he responds to moral issues in particular.
I found the story itself to be full of great surprises, interesting and quirky characters. Happily, the author dedicates a fair amount of time to character development (and certainly does so without skimping on the plot), and this could make all the difference as the series develops.
I highly recommend this book to any fan of the genre, and will definitely be reading the next of the series.
This is a great book. this book is very one of a kind in this action packed fantasy book about a former superhero turned bounty hunter who hunts any sort of supernatural or mythical beings. This book will keep you flipping the page to find out whats next. a great read.
Ive always loved Dresden files and this ranked right up there with Butchers best ,I was hooked right off the bat , i think this is my new love, Hope these books keep going love this guys snark have to laugh in the face of adversity.
I have SO much love for A Bounty with Strings! This homegrown gem is a welcome addition (in my opinion) to the genre. Markus Matthews has developed a very cool world with not just supernaturals ('enhanced individuals' is the term he used) like vampires and werewolves, but elementals, fae, dark elves (yes you read that right!) and people who would fall into the category of super heroes. We jump right into the action with Zack, the former Hamilton Hurricane, doing a job as a bounty hunter. He gets a tip on a particularly high value bounty that he has been searching for a while....but he is not the only person who shows up looking for this particular creature. What follows is a series of events that tangle up Zack's life probably more than he ever thought - while running for his life with a remarkable group of women. I loved the bits in the secret underground lab under London, and the vampire high courts, and the well choreographed fight scenes. I can't wait for the next installment! I hope Matthews has many more adventures planned!
I found this series after finishing the Dresden Files.so if you like that you'll love this too. If this were made into a tv series I could imagine someone like Ryan Reynolds playing the main character Zack. Very similar humour and sarcasm. The story was excellent I and the developing relationship between the characters was really well done. Already got book two.
This book was easy to read and fun. I loved it, and it had awesome premise. I would recommend it to family ad friends. Its the first in a series but the way it ended of course opened the doors for more yet had a satisfying ending. That is so hard to do and it was done well!
I wasn’t sure I would finish when I started reading, as it felt a bit superhero-y. I’m glad I continued, however, as this is a fun series. Very unusual characters, and they work well together. Now that the groundwork has been laid, it will be interesting to see where the author takes them next.
Zack Stevens aka ‘the Hamilton Hurricane’ ― the once renown Air elemental superhero ― has traded his now too tight spandex for a lucrative but dangerous life as a bounty hunter. And now, after years of working alone, Zack finds himself helping four enhanced individuals who are in desperate need:
• Bree: A ravenous blonde werepanther. • Stella: A 100-year-old schoolgirl with a Jekyll & Hyde complex. • Blue: A sword-wielding, teleporting blue alien. • Olivia: A smoking-hot vampire with a price on her head.
The characters are a great mix; I don’t think I’ve read a book with such a diverse central cast. If you want girl power, A Bounty with Strings has got it in spades! The plot revolves around Olivia’s vampire bloodline and a $5 million bounty ― compliments of the French Vampire Court and its master ― to have her killed. The gang find themselves caught in the middle of a political power struggle between the English and French vampire courts and Zack & co must face attack after attack as they run from hideout to hideout. The action is relayed with skill; every lightning blast and each exploding grenade expertly described. A deal is struck and a date with destiny set in motion: to stop the bounty on Olivia, they must face the all-powerful Giselle. The companions must learn to fight as a team if they’re to have any chance of success, and the growing friendship between Zack and his new colleagues is at the heart of the story, and by the end, that bond is stronger than blood. A Bounty with Strings is great fun, and if your thing is urban fantasy and crime-fighting heroes, then you’ll love it! And who doesn’t like a secret laboratory ― particularly one equipped with a Food-O-Tron. I now feel an overpowering need to experience Canadian convenience food for myself ― especially a ‘Bacon and Egger’ (and I’m a pescatarian).
In short, A Bounty with Strings is a crime-fighting, bounty-hunting, vampire-slaying, urban fantasy orgy with a tantalising smattering of fast-food delights and hardcore battle action! And I’m very much looking forward to reading book two 😊
There’s no question that the rise of the MCU more than a decade ago fundamentally changed the superhero genre, almost across the board. It has influenced the comics, which have influenced further movies. Outside of movie novelizations, you don’t often find a lot of original novels in the superhero genre. You certainly don’t find superhero novels set in Canada that dip into horror and fantasy genres, but here we are.
A Bounty With Strings gives us a unique hero, in that he’s not a hero anymore. What happens beyond the cape and tights has always been of interest to me. As kids, we watch our heroes battle evil week after week, episode after episode or film after film and never give a thought to it. It used to be pure escapism, but modern sensibilities seem to want even a touch reality to ground our stories in. Maybe in doing so, the fantastic seems a little more ordinary and thus maybe within our reach.
Either way, Zack has retired from the hero life, but continues to fight the good fight as a bounty hunter who seeks out super villains (and supernatural villains – a unique blend of figures from the horror/fantasy genres I mentioned before; I won’t spoil it but there are some terrific surprises) and brings them down.
I enjoyed that this unlikely tale was set in an unlikely place. Most of the major heroes are in New York, so having a hero that operates within our neighbor to the north was a bit of fun. As we get to know Zack and understand how his powers work, we are treated to his unique perspective on things, which is extremely well written and feels very natural.
Zack is joined by others on his quest, which builds into a sort of pseudo-family situation. Nothing groundbreaking, but appropriate to the story and it doesn’t feel rehashed.
Outside of some very minor pacing issues in some scenes, the book is a very fast read (and I’m a terribly slow reader). Absolutely recommended! Lots of action, fun, and heart rolled up into a surprising and enjoyable post-MCU superhero story.
Zack is a former hero - as in superhero, with air-based superpowers to boot - who now takes down similarly supernatural villains, and makes a pretty penny for doing so. But one normal night hunting goes awry, and he comes into possession of an extra-strong villain for bounty - plus four superpowered women in various need of help.
A BOUNTY WITH STRINGS is primarily an adventure story following Zack and his new-found companions in a setting that colorfully incorporates superheroes, mythology, and public domain characters such as Frankenstein and Jekyll/Hyde. A more mundane Canadian setting is the backdrop, in which all these fantastic elements are normal enough that they have a law enforcement organization for posting bounties and locking up baddies.
I liked learning about all the "monsters" (or Enhanced Individuals, as they prefer to be called) who populate this world, helpfully illuminated by Zack's ability to see their superpowers in the form of multicolored auras. Zack's inner monologue elaborates on these EIs and their traits, which feels kind of like a Fantastic Beasts guide in the best way.
The inner monologues continue for less interesting scenes such as shopping, cooking food, filing bounty receipts, and checking out hot ladies. I found this made the story drag a little; it felt like the "camera" of the narrative was left running, when scenes could've used a few cuts to keep up the energy. Regardless of times when the action lags, there is enough creativity and feeling in this book to delight readers from start to finish, especially if you like fantasy/sci-fi with a large dose of found family.
I followed an ad from Facebook to see what this was, I've found some fantastic books, which this is, and some duds lol.
This is a very different take on a Super Hero. This is what happens to a SH when the money runs out. I've never given that a thought, how do they fund their SH lives?? Rent, food etc 😮😮🤔🤔
Zack was a SH, who's now a Bounty Hunter, who hunts down 'Enhanced ', this is the politically correct new age term for Monsters and people with powers.
Like the one he'd tracked down only to find he's been beaten to the punch.
There's a female Were, a female Vampire, a girl child and a Blue woman going after the Earth Elemental, and it doesn't go to plan and Zack steps in to stop them all being killed.
Zack is an Air Elemental, but even that won't stop him getting his butt handed to him on occasion, but not today.
Things take a turn in all their lives when he offers them room to recuperate after the fight, that's left Blue in a healing coma and then fighting for their lives against Dark Elves, biker gangs etc, when he finds out that Olivia is the heir to the French Vampire throne. But the Queen on there doesn't want to abdicate without a fight.
Brilliant writing in heading to buy book two NOW 😁😁😁
A Bounty With Strings is an entertaining story that follows the story of Zack a retired superhero who now works as a bounty hunter. Set in a fantasy alternate version of Canada the story is jam packed with elemental magic, supernatural beings such as were panthers, and mystics.
While I enjoyed all of the action packed scenes and fantasy elements what I really enjoyed the most was the characters of this novel. Zack and his new companions come together under intense circumstances and throw their differences to the side to work together. Seeing the rag-tag group do their best to defeat evil opposing forces was so amazing.
My only complaint is that the flow of the dialogue and story seemed a bit stagnant at times, but other than that I highly recommend this book! It you love action packed fantasy novels give this a try!
Zack is a former superhero. He is also an Enhanced Individual - a human with non human powers. His is Electrical. In this world, Enhanced people have been around and accepted for hundreds of years. In order to actually be able to enjoy life and actually pay bills he hung up his superhero costume and became a bounty hunter finding bad Enhanced people. In the course of a Hunt, he encounters several other bounty hunters. His life will never be the same. This book is an easy, breezy read. It is also quite humorus. However, it is also very violent with D&D like battles. Although there is no sexual intercourse, sex, nudity and descriptions of sexual attraction is maturely detailed. I will be reading more of the series. I liked Zack and his crew.
Wow. This was a really fun read. Think Hellboy, meets Watchmen, meets League of Extraordinary Gentleman. Fast-paced, great characters, a lot of surprises and action. Honestly, a real contender and breath of fresh air in the superhero fiction department considering how inundated we are right now with Marvel and DC superheroes.
I would highly recommend this for fans of science fiction, fantasy, ragtag superhero stories. It's not just for young adults, either, I would say that anyone would easily enjoy this read. This book proved to be a real page-turner and for that, I am so grateful and excited for more. The only major comment I have (and it isn't a complaint in any way) is that I would love to see it as a graphic novel!
I usually enjoy the fantasy genre so launched into this book with enthusiasm but very quickly realised that this was no ordinary fantasy novel. It follows the story of Zack, an ex superhero turned bounty hunter. I found the idea of an ex-superhero who uses google maps and talks to Siri, gets take out and shops for groceries (although he does fly there!) really enjoyable. It made his character likeable and set a fantasy in a world that I could relate to.
This is a story of how a lone worker becomes part of a pack, how he, along with his new companions, beat the odds that are heavily stacked against them. It sounds formulaic but it reads as so much more that that because of the time the author has taken to give the reader backstories and characters you feel invested in. I never found myself rushing on or second guessing the ending as I was too absorbed all the way through, the adventure keeps you turning the pages from beginning to end.
With a hit out on one of the pack and vampires, were creatures, an alien, leprechauns, fae, dark elves and more all in the mix, it feels like it shouldn't work but it does, superbly well. The idea of 'enhanced' humans is not a new one in this genre but this felt like a breath of fresh air. I would highly recommend a read, it has an excellent plot and I cannot say how much I enjoyed this book. I will be eagerly waiting for the next in the series.
The voice in this book is amazing. And that is a talent that can't truly be taught. I chuckled throughout the story that was very original and captivating. The author did a great job as well with his setting and worldbuilding. I could picture the place and where the characters were and never got pulled out of the story. The author also does a great job with the character development and character arc so I was really able to connect with and feel sympathy for the cast in this book, especially Zack. I would definitely recommend this book because...THE VOICE! I mean, the opening page is stupendous and descriptive in an organic way.
This had an interesting premise, if you don't mind a story that takes AD&D, Vampire: the Masquerade, Hellboy, X-men, and The Incredibles, throws them in a blender uses the resulting slurry as the story world. The language (especially the dialogue) was a bit stilted, but that should -- hopefully -- get better as the series continues.
In all, a light and relatively entertaining read, with few typos.
What a great read. Zack is now a bounty hunter. I'm not to sure if this book is Fantasy. Jack with his friends, sort of his family, decide to go after a huge bounty. He meets up with many characters and I laughed quite a few times. The fight scenes were wonderful. If your into Super heroes this is the book. Markus Matthews is a remarkable writer. Looking forward to his next book.
I guss you could call this a superhero book. This superhero has turned bounty hunter to put food on the table. He picks up some awesome friends. The book is fun and exciting.. I loved it and i hope there will be more.
What's a broke hero do to? Become a bounty hunter of course. Welcome to a world where superheroes, weres, Aliens, vampires and many more fantasy species come to life. Like all people, some are criminals and have bounties. This is a fun, easy read. Engaging from the first page
Superhero fiction is dominated by the two major comic book series, but Markus Matthews proves he can hang with the big dogs in his first novel in the bounty hunter series. The book follows a retired super hero who was forced to give up his superhero role for a more profitable venture. Matthews paints a vivid picture and creates three-dimensional characters. His novel is a must-read for every superhero fan.
I normally read mysteries so I was a bit skeptical when I won this book on Goodreads. My skepticism was short lived, however, as I truly enjoyed the book. I felt the author did a great job of developing the characters and the plot. The story was advanced at just the right pace to hold my attention with the action as he filled in the background of the characters. I will continue with the series.
Absolutely loved the story, character and world building. Can't wait to read the rest of the series. Few spelling and grammatical mistakes that I just couldn't ignore, so I've highlighted them and hopefully they will be rectified. 4 stars only because of the mistakes. Story is great
