I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

First off, I loved that this book was written for a wedding gift to a couple. The dedication says, “To Kristi and Matthew - who are receiving this book as a wedding gift instead of something more practical off their registry.”

description

The collection was divided into 4 sections and my favorite was Amor Insanus. That section had all the best poems. They were funny and sexual but still managed to be beautiful and not crude. My favorites from that section were, “A Boring Dream of Our Life in Fine Detail” (pg. 56), “The Unfortunate Subliminal Typo” (pg. 60), “From Your Nakedness, A Poem” (pg. 61), “Manaconda” (pg. 64), “Conjugation, In Latin” (pg. 67), “Subject: Cake No. 50” (pg. 75), “Angel of Light (pg. 78), and “Freudian Slips Of(f) the Thong” (pg. 79).

The rest of the sections were very romantic, dreamy, and ethereal. Some of my favorites from the remaining sections were, “Quanta Qualia” (pg. 15), “Tears of the Poet” (pg. 23) and “To My Husband Upon Vicennial Introspection” (pg. 103).

The only negative is that there were some poems that I didn’t quite “get”. Some of them were a bit too metaphorical and I wasn’t able to really decipher the meaning.

Aside from that, I really enjoyed this collection and recommend it to those who enjoy romantic poetry!

The first thing I read when I opened this book was where it is mentioned that this book was meant as a wedding gift and is there anything cuter than that?
Yes, the poems that are written in the book.
I found the poems to be so beautifully written and profound that I got agitated why the author limited her target audience by associating the book with weddings. It is a book filled with love poetry and it also encompasses all other angles of a relationship. If this book had a different title, it would have a mass appeal among romantics who do not associate amour with only marriage. But the author explained very nicely how this book was never meant to be commercial and was, in all sincerity just a wedding gift. And that is why I think this book had poems written with such honesty.
I liked many of the poems but one became my absolute favourite and that is:
"Tears of the poet"

You're the only man I've ever met
who seems to have the faintest conception
of what I mean when I write something

My poems, I think,
are merely your voice speaking

Is not poetry a secret language -
a sigh answering a sigh?

We go in and out of each other's minds
without any effort

I awaken with you at dawn
and listen to you endlessly

Poem after poem we lie in each other's thoughts and
all my teardrops turn into violets.

The only reason I took so long to finish this book is that I am not much of a romantic and so I could not take in all the love poems instantly. I enjoyed my time reading it and took it slow, reaching back on my shelf to read a poem or two every day, or at the end of a week.
It is one of those books that you can always return to and it will feel like a breath of fresh air every time.

As always, do not let my star count override your judgement of content. More on the stars, counting, and my rating challenges later. Five stars for me was an easy decision. Now for the good stuff, Bowen’s work.
For an early example, turn to Quanta Qualia, which ends thus: “for I was unconscious before you /and now I am divine.”
Again in I Am Yours, a Soulful Avowal, we find this: “I am bound to you, /not by vow, nor by will, nor by law, /but by divine grace.”
Spoiler alert: this is the entire short poem Everything: “all we /ever had /was everything.” This should give you a hint of Bowen’s power with small words.
Bowen can be quite erotic, as in Nights by the Sea, which contains this: “wild and sweet, lying side by side, /between pleasure and rest, between air and fire.” and this: “We sleep together, you and I, /shyly obscene, with bodies cogged together /as pieces of a well-oiled dream. ” If you think that’s a spoiler, buy the book and turn to this longer poem to see all of it.
For a laugh from a strangely formatted poem, turn to The Unfortunate Subliminal Typo.
For a short poem with a neat ending, turn to From Your Nakedness, a Poem, which begins: “you streak inside my mind.”
In the short poem Identity Theft, there is a hint of sexuality and how it unites a couple.
For a bit of whimsy, turn to Freudian Slips of(F) the Thong, where Bowen has occasional parentheses which give optional wordings. While this is cute and fun, the overall poem has serious power.
Finally, let me mention The Common Prayer for Stillness. Alone and missing the other, the writer exposes deep feelings. I am moved by this longer poem every time I read it.
Now for the star count boilerplate which I threatened earlier to come back to. My personal guidelines, when doing any review, are as follows: five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. I try hard to be consistent. Roughly equal to best in genre? Yep. Five stars, even from this curmudgeon.

Ollie was kind enough to send me a copy of this collection to review, and what a delightful surprise it was!

The title isn't an ironic, cutesy attention-grabber - the dedication (which I love!) reveals that it is literally intended as a wedding gift for friends of Ollie's, "instead of something more practical off their registry". Perfection! Given that, it would make a great gift for the newlyweds that are impossible to buy for, be sure to keep it in mind next wedding season.

It's full to the brim with beautiful nature imagery, and the printing is gorgeous, with the occasional whimsical illustration.

A few favourites: The Prudent Gardeners (p 26), Color of When (p 49), From Your Nakedness, A Poem (p 61), Manaconda (p 64 - literally laughed out loud!), Subject: Cake No 50 (p 75), and - of course - Freudian Slips Of(f) The Thong (p 79, and the undisputed champ of the whole collection).

What could be better as a wedding gift than a collection of love poems?

On the Occasion of a Wedding is an incredible volume of poems to which I don’t think my reader brain or this review can do justice.

On one level, all the poems in On the Occasion of a Wedding can be enjoyed relatively easily and superficially for the beauty of their appearance, their rhythms and cadences alongside some wonderful illustrations and for their ease of accessibility. On other occasions I found I had to think hard to understand their meaning and references. This is by no means a criticism but an extra joy in reading and discovering something new to me. I had no idea what the Zaimph of Tanit was, for example, and scurried off to the great god Google to find out. As a result, not only have I enjoyed beautiful imagery, clever structure and moving imagery in the poems in On the Occasion of a Wedding, but I have learned something new along the way so that this slim volume has kept me entertained, moved and educated for hours more than the initial reading of its contents and the size of the volume might suggest.

It’s difficult to convey how much there is to enjoy in On the Occasion of a Wedding. I found Ollie Bowen’s writing emotional, funny and sensual and I adored the natural images that pepper the verse. I kept changing my mind about which poem I liked the most because every time I went back to reread them I found something new, innovative or mystical to contemplate. The simplicity of Everything I thought was beautiful and I genuinely think I’d like to have Quando read at my husband’s funeral (assuming he dies before me some time in the distant future!).

In a sense, I shouldn’t be reviewing On The Occasion of a Wedding as I don’t feel I’ve finished reading it. I’ve certainly read each poem at least three or four times, but I have only scratched the surface of their meanings and I feel I have so much more to discover as I return to Ollie Bowen’s writing time and again. I can only recommend that you read On the Occasion of a Wedding too and see if you can do it more justice than I have!

Stunning collection with wisdom, humor, and profound prose

I began reading this collection with a thousand distractions pulling my attention away. But by the third or fourth poem, everything else faded away. It is divided into sections, each of them thoughtfully crafted and unified with common themes. This book feels like a journey almost. As if the beginning was what we need to hear about marriage and ending with what we can learn from marriage.

A few of my favorites are “Monarchs”, “The Prudent Gardeners”, “The Woman Who Fell In Love With The Moon”, and “Invective Against Dead Squids.” There is one line that jumped out at me that I’m sure I’ll carry with me long after posting this review in which it reads “is not poetry a secret language - a sigh answering a sigh?” For me this one sentence captures what poetry is for me. It can be loud and boastful but it may also be tender and laced within whispers. Ollie Bowen captures this beautifully.

My one recommendation is that this book may not be suitable for young readers as it does contain explicit pieces, but my Lord, everyone of those pieces was elegant, beautifully penned, and most of the time had me laughing.

I would recommend this book for readers of poetry who want to understand what marriage can be, for the readers who maybe want a quick read, and for those who find themselves questioning their relationships.

5/5 would recommend. Well done!

The kaleidoscope of love

California author Ollie Bowen, with degrees in education, science and business, is not only a scholar, she is also a poet. This appears to be her first publication of her poetry and it is an impressive debut!

Ollie labels this collection as ‘eclectic love poems’ and adds a note of sensitivity with the titles of sections in this collection - Flores Caelesti (heavenly flowers), Caelo Marique (sky and sea), Amor Insanus (crazy love), and Pluit et Lucet (rains and shines) – reminders of her scholarly background! The poems detail the bliss, the spiritual heights, the passion, the lust, the humor, and the madness of love in a manner that can only be appreciated by reading the collection cover to cover. Examples hint at the content:

QUANTA QUALIA

i’ve spent years contemplating
how to adequately describe
the raw feeling of you

but no combination of
one hundred thousand words
can capture eve
the slightest quanta

do we love, or
am I but a blue tangerine?

the answer the reality
no longer matter

for I was unconscious before you
and now I am divine

EVERYTHING
all we
ever had
was everything

And so the flow of love in all its aspects is embraced by a new poet of distinction. The rewards of this collection are many. Highly recommended.

Few things could be more appropriate as a gift for a wedding than a beautiful collection of love poems. On the Occasion of a Wedding: Eclectic Love Poems by Ollie Bown is one such example. The collection is broken out into sections: Flores Caelesti (heavenly flowers),Caelo Marique (sky and sea),Amor Insanus (crazy love),Pluit et Lucet (rains and shines). For those embarking on a new marriage, and for those who have entered marriage, endured, and prospered through marriage, this is a bold collection that captures all of the emotions that encapsulate those specific times in marriage and life that are the most memorable and revealing. Heartfelt and emotional, sometimes funny, and always with captivating language, Bowen has created a one of a kind collection that will resonate and astound. Highly recommend for an immersive read, but especially for those taking a chance with marriage and devotion.

Beautiful book full of beautiful words that make beautiful poems into a beautiful love story.

This is a compilation of poems designed to say what it truly means to love another. This book was actually compiled and put together to be a wedding gift for a friend of the author. The poems are sweet, some sticky sweet and some are intense with a touch of vinegar because we all know that real love isn’t always sticky sweet! Each poem is unique and beautiful as poems should be. They each try to express what it is to truly love someone, alone they would fail but together, they create a story of love, how it grows and falls and grows again stronger each time. Beautifully done on the authors part. It is book worth having in the library and reading often. Even if you don’t have one to love but yourself. It will serve as a good reminder of real love.

Ollie Bowen’s thoughtfulness to a friend results in On the Occasion of a Wedding: Eclectic Love Poems. Ollie covers many areas of a relationship; the gratitude of a bride for the groom’s mother, friendship, times when things are not always a bed of roses, emotional love, and physical love. These poems don’t rhyme, but the words blend and flow to complete a picture the author wishes to convey to the reader.

I found On the Occasion of a Wedding: Eclectic Love Poems sweet as Ollie Bowen views nature and compares it to love. Devote readers of poetry will read this short book with zeal and fervor. Veil of the Jellyfish would have been my favorite as it talks about the different aspects a wife reveals and the distinctive place she has in his life and universe.

This collection of poems is very sweet and goes through the different stages of a marriage. It mostly is devoted to love and admiration, but also has poems to cover other parts from the ups to the downs (although not too down). There are poems of different lengths and types, but all dedicated to the subject of relationships. Some are a bit cliche' and a little cheesy, but overall they are cute and appreciable.

This book would definitely make a cute wedding gift and would be enjoyed by true poetry lovers; for those who are not true poetry fans it may be a bit much as it doesn't involve simple rhymes.

A medley of poetry and illustrations, this book of poems will leave you thinking of its truths about love and all its appearances and permutations in the natural world, mundane world, and beyond. Traversing a wide breadth of linguistic, cultural, and botanical territory, the poems are accessible even without possessing a full grasp of the mechanics of poetry. At times humorous and esoteric, this collection of poems makes a strong case for the sides of love less visibly seen, like the beauty of growing apart and the patience that love endures.

I believe a book of poetry should be read slowly and each word savored. Also reading a poem once is never enough to extract the author’s meaning or develop your own interpretation. This collection leant itself to all of this. I laughed, I cried, I was shocked and I was moved. I found myself wishing I had discovered this earlier to give as a wedding present to my recently married niece and her husband. I highly suggest this to others looking for a wedding gift.

I’ve read and reread many of these poems and it will remain on my bedside to read and reread again!

This book is the perfect blend of poetic and romantic. It’s been so long since I’ve read a poetry book that is poetic (if that makes sense). Some modern poems do not have the appeal of old, classic pieces – they are more of a “quotable quote” for me than an actual poetry. But Ollie still has that charm in her works. Her style is a mixture of rhythmic and metaphoric. I really enjoyed reading the whole thing. It is very creative. Now, onto the details…

It's so hard to rate poetry since it is such a subjective art form. I enjoyed the flow of these poems, how they went from intense, consuming love, to content, to frustration, to longing, etc. Very fitting for the metaphor of marriage itself. Although I did enjoy most, some were a little too scattered or silly for me, but again, poetry is subjective. Overall, this was a quick easy read for those who love poetry and lots will hit home if you've ever been married.

This book of poetry just wasn’t something that I could get into. While there was many of the poems that were wonderfully written and beautiful, many of them I just couldn’t get. I loved that this book was a wedding gift to a newly married couple. It’s incredibly thoughtful for someone to do this, rather than a traditional gift for a wedding. This has more meaning and thought behind it. Don’t let my review keep you from reading and making your own opinions.

I received this ebook from Goodreads Giveaway. I could see reviews from people who loved the poems, but nothing spoke to me as outstsnding. I know the author wrote this as a gift to friends for the occasion of their wedding. I think when directed to specific people like this, they would cherish the thoughts. Just not my genre.
