Accidental Witches #4

Hell and Hexes

Rate this book
Two weeks ago Sylvie Perkins’ luck ran out.

She died. Was resurrected. Spent two long weeks recovering from the ordeal on her sister’s couch. Now the luck witch is back home, trying to come to terms with what happened, and cope with a terrible secret—her magic is gone.

Can a witch who’s not a witch manage to help the supernatural residents of Accident and mediate the escalating werewolf conflict? With tempers running high, and a war on the horizon, Sylvie wonders if the solution lies with the sexy, carefree demon she met while recuperating on her sister’s couch, or somewhere deep within herself.

Debra lives in a little house in the woods in Maryland with three sons, and a Noah’s ark of four legged family members. She has a corporate job during the day, and writes novels at night, after the kids are tucked in bed.

She drives an Excursion affectionately called The Beast, couldn’t carry a tune if you duct taped it to her back, and enjoys an occasional cosmopolitan (heavy on the vodka). On a good day, she jogs and horseback rides, hopefully managing to keep the horse between herself and the ground.

Her only known super power is ‘Identify Roadkill’.

The fourth book in this quick easy to read series about witch sisters who have different powers and tend to live in a town called 'Accident' that was set-up as a haven for witches (and 'others') back in the 'burning times' by an ancient relative.

I didn't mention it in the prior review, but the main character in the prior book has a twin. That twin is Sylvie. Sylvie died in the previous book - but it didn't take. And so, because she's still alive and stuff, Sylvie is the main POV for this book.

Sylvie is the luck witch - as in she can create lucky charms and the like (also, as the other side of the coin, she can hex people). Except her magic seems reluctant to appear after she came back from the dead. She's sad about that.

While recupperating on her sister's couch, she became familiar with a messenger demon (not really a demon but she, and others, keep having trouble remembering that) who kept popping up with messages for Lucian (the son of Satan - first seen in the first book in this series). Unbeknownst to all but himself, 'not-a-demon' keeps turning up because of 'couch-witch', the name he calls Sylvie.

He tracks her down after she leaves. They have some fun together. Along the way Sylvie becomes aware that he isn't really a demon (he's a creature who came long before demons/angels/the big-bang).

Luck comes in many different shapes and sizes. Sometimes, it even comes in the shape of an incompetent messenger demon between heaven and hell...

A fun, lighthearted story about the recently dead and revived witch sister, Sylvie; now fresh out of her luck magic. But, as luck would have it; her death leads her to Eshu, the imfamous screwup messenger between demons and angels.

This not quite demon is willing to do anything to get into Sylvie's good graces, including attending awkward family dinners, and actually following orders for once - fortunately for the Dickskin packs of Accident.

Yet another good match for the couch-witch and her T-Rex in disguise.

I hate when the books in this series come out! I am always reading something else, something that I want to finish first because I usually read more than one book at a time. Solution – work the new book in with the others and read it somewhat leisurely, right? Well, that works for a little while, maybe 10% to 20% of the book and then I am reading until the end. Yep, same thing with Hell & Hexes.

If you’ve not read one of my reviews, I should tell you this – I don’t do spoilers and I don’t summarize the story for you. There’s a book for that. Buy it and read it. You won’t be sorry.

In this story we have a witch who died in the last book, was brought back to life, and is now a witch who… oops, I can’t tell you that. Sorry. Then there’s Eshu who is a demon/angel but not really either. He is a… oh, no problem there. We never know for sure what he is, just what he isn’t – and that he’s cool. Then there’s the pending werewolf civil war that… dang it, can’t tell you that either.

Okay, let me cut to the bad news: Syl is witch number 4 of 7. That means only 3 more stories in this series. The author had better come up with something to stretch this out.

Now for the good news: First and foremost, the author is Debra Dunbar and that in itself is enough recommendation. This story might be, just maybe, just a little above the previous 3. Maybe not but it is good. The ending ended too soon for me but maybe that’s just because I always want more, maybe? Regardless, it is yet another hit from a fantastic author.

Now to wait (im)patiently for the next one!

A solution?

A great read. Loved it and enjoyed the final solution reached. However am still a bit confused by our main male character. What exactly is he - especially as he is supposed to be older than anybody else in heaven, hell or earth. What powers does he actually have and what is his actual role. I know he carries messages but why?
Having died and been brought back to life is hard. Having been active before the enforced rest as she recovers is driving her nuts. The only bright spark is the messenger. He of the awful jokes. But he brings her joy. Now she has gone back to work but tires quickly and her magic seems to have more or less disappeared. Then there are the wolves. With the splitting of the pack into two and with two lone wolves tempers are running high and it feels like a time bomb has been placed in their community. Then there is her overwhelming attraction to the messenger. Should she take a chance on him? What about the situation with the wolves? Can a solution be found and agreed upon that will satisfy both parties whilst saving face and keeping the peace?

This series is getting worse for me. It’s more like 2.5 stars. This story just didn’t make sense. A giant, fire breathing trex? Escher (I know I spelled the name wrong but don’t care enough to go check it) was this powerful, old demon-not demon who she says she say cleverness and knowledge inside but he was a complete kid. Despite that I kind of like his relationship with Sylvi. What I really disliked was Cassie and Lucien. It felt like their characters took a complete 180. I liked them in their book. In this one I REALLY REALY disliked them. Both were self centered, only cared about what they wanted, possessive, controlling and down right intrusive. It really turned me off this book. So much so I almost stopped the series but I need an easy audio book to listen to so onto the next one. Hope it’s better

I really enjoyed this one, a lovely addition to the series 🤗

Sylvie is the luck witch but she’s feeling after her death in the previous book. While regrouping on Cassie’s couch, she befriends a messenger between Heaven and Hell, Eshu, and he falls for her. They navigate Sylvie feeling unlucky and the oncoming war between the two packs on the mountain.

Eshu’s antics are hilarious and his many innuendos towards sex are equally so. He’s not shy about bedroom antics and his proportions 😅

I’m also glad to see the story of the werewolves continuing and I find myself feeling for both alphas. Did not see that coming from the first book but I’m glad I did.

Twitchy fun

What happens when a down-on-her-luck luck witch becomes the object of desire for a more-or-less demon with nothing but bad luck? All sorts of crazy shenanigans and outside the box solutions to impossible problems. Sylvie and Eshu make a really cute couple. I really liked Eshu's character and his sense of humor and off-beat take on what was happening around him. If I have any criticism of the book at all, it would be that I wish we could have had more of Wang's perspective.

Wonderful and Funny!

This was a truly wonderful and funny story. I absolutely adore Sylvie and Eshu. Both of these characters are so lovable and funny. Their relationship is based on admiration, love and a lot of fun.

I loved this story so much. It was sweet with a bit of intense adventure mixed in. I can’t wait to read which sister this author writes about next. I love each and every one of their stories.

Highly recommend this book and this series.

Sylvie's story is so cute and funny. I love how she accepts the crazy Eshu. He has a lot of character and him and his "couch witch" are wonderful additions to this series.

The ongoing werewolf situation finally has some that there won't be an explosive fight between the werewolves. I feel for them. They are stuck in old traditions and rules. Sylvie is great at getting other people to work on their issues. She has a much harder time helping herself.

This latest book in the Accidental Witches series is the best yet. Sylvie and Eshu are fun as they work out things. The town of Accident is it's normal crazy self. And the werewolves are making trouble for themselves and the town. In other words, a normal day at the office.
I don't do spoilers, so do yourself a favor and enjoy this book today.

Sylvie only had to die to find her new life. Eshu is the errand guy for Cassie’s Lucian but he has own over the top quirky ways. I loved this couple and enjoyed the laugh out loud antics. Eshe certainly loves and supports his couch-witch. When Sylvie doubts herself and her magic Eshu is right there to give her his laughter and dirty limericks.

This was my first Debra Dunbar book and I really liked it. It's borderline YA imo since there's no actual sex scenes. Sex is had, yes, and bawdy talk is liberally sprinkled through but there's detailed sexy times sadly. :(

I really loved Eshu <3 Wish there'd been more scenes from his POV - I especially liked the dino rampage scene lol

Funny, entertaining, great read

This series has hilarious moments and a great storyline. Part cozy mystery, part paranormal romance, in snarky humorous fashion. Great characters and world building.

Dying sucks

This series is delightful, and this book is no exception. Death is hard. Living afterwards is even harder. Finding balance sometimes requires a jester.

This book is ok, but definitely not as good as the first two. The extreme coziness of this series is starting to get to me.

This series is a good read. It is another one where a witch pairs with a minor from the underworld.

Love

This book is great. The lucky witch finds someone who isnt lucky. He creates chaos when she normally has calm. The perfect match. Think it is also great that they fell for each other and she hesitates. Thinking that she is just a fling for him when he is all about her. It is normally the other way around. The woman is normally all about the guy and he is just playing around. I love this book and cannot wait to read the next one
