Saving America #1

One If By Land, Two If By... Submarine

Rate this book
When Paul Revere is kidnapped by a time traveler determined to change the outcome of the American Revolution, twelve-year-old Kep Westguard is sent to Boston, 1775, to take his famous midnight ride. Kep’s four-person team has twenty-four hours to light the famous lanterns at Old North Church, warn Lexington and Concord that the British are coming, and rescue John Hancock and Samuel Adams from hanging as traitors to the crown.

As the clock ticks, one teammate is arrested as a runaway slave, a British watchman stops another from lighting the lanterns, and Kep nearly drowns when he attempts to cross the Charles River in a Patriot inventor’s prototype wooden, hand-crank submarine. When Hancock and Adams ask Kep to sneak a trunk of critical papers out from under the eyes of the British Army during the Battle of Lexington, Kep has to decide how much he’s willing to sacrifice for his country. If he fails, there will be no America to return to.

Eileen Schnabel is the author of the Kep Westguard Adventures, a time-travel historical fiction series where three teens—and one fiercely determined 10-year-old younger brother—are sent back to pivotal moments in the American Revolution to stop a rogue time traveler from rewriting history and helping the British win.

When Paul Revere is kidnapped, their first mission—taking his famous midnight ride, lighting the lanterns, and warning the countryside—launches One If By Land, Two If By Submarine. From there, the team moves on to blowing up bridges, infiltrating British camps, and saving an ancestor accused of spying in Kep Westguard: Rebel Spy and Kep Westguard: The Great Escape.

Book four—The Second Battle of Saratoga—launches Fall 2025.

Praised by Kirkus Reviews as “a page-turner that young history buffs will enjoy,” and described as “rambunctious YA educational entertainment that reimagines the American Revolution as a time-travel escapade,” the series has also been called “a deftly crafted and simply riveting read” by Midwest Book Review. With suspense, humor, and little-known history, these fast-paced missions are beloved by readers who want Percy Jackson with muskets.

Eileen holds an MA in journalism from Stanford and a JD from the University of Iowa. She lives in Wisconsin with her family and their golden doodle, Piper—who has yet to time travel, but isn’t ruling it out.

I'm not typically a fan of time travel books, but this one is an exception. The plot is fast moving, the characters are relatable, and the themes resonate deeply, particularly when viewed within the context of our current political climate. This would be a terrific read for anyone who loves adventure or historical fiction and it would also be a wonderful addition to any classroom as it gives plenty of room for meaningful discussions not only regarding American history but also race, justice, patriotism, bravery, and friendship. I can't wait to see what book two brings!

"One If By Land, Two If By... Submarine" is a great science-fiction/historical-fiction novel in which Kep Westgard, his brother Max, and his friends T.J. and Tela are at a Revolution reenactment center for a $2,000 prize and a chance to be on possible reality show. But when pretending to be in 1775 goes to actually being in 1775, Kep and his friends go on an action-packed adventure to 1775 to save the Revolution before it starts. Will they be able to complete their mission in only 24 hours and return home?

In terms of books, I have't read many history-related ones, but "One If By Land, Two If By... Submarine" has introduced me into the world combining science-fiction and historical-fiction. I loved it because it was action-packed, suspenseful, exiting, mysterious - you name it. I wanted to keep reading forever and was dissappointed when the book ended. This books is great for pre-teens starting to learn about the Revolutionary War because it really makes you want to find out more about it. As a pre-teen, I wasn't really into history, but now I definitely want to learn more.

Historical fiction for middle school can be uneven, but this book exceeded my expectations.

I admit that I do love time travel novels, yet this book also sneaks in a lot of historical facts into the fast-paced action. Unsuspecting middle school kids won't even notice they're learning. (I learned a thing or two!) It would make a great addition to an American history curriculum.

The plot is tight, the adventure never stops, and the four time traveler characters are engaging, quirky, and relatable. (I can't decide if Tela the bossy sharpshooter is is my favorite or the oober smart Max!)

The author doesn't shy away from social injustice and tackles mature themes, so the story is deep, thought-provoking, and resonates.

I read it cover to cover. Two thumbs up!

Eileen Schanbel has written a truly creative novel with One if by Land Two if by Submarine. This book offers a uniquely crafted narrative that seamlessly weaves together the worlds of science fiction and the American Revolution. It describes the dual worlds of reenactment and the turmoil leading up to the American Revolution with equal brilliance. And the characters are endearing, yet have flaws the reader will emphasize with. It starts with a wonderful description and insight into the world of Revolutionary War reenactment. The author presents a composite picture of reenactment that shows a realistic youthful involvement in which young people are participants, yet critique the happenings of the environment that they are in. Both the positive and the negative aspects of reenactment are depicted, such as the excitement, the weariness, and the need for historical reality while having an entertainment component.
Along the path of the narrative of the novel familiar names such as Phillis Wheatley, Sam Adams, Paul Revere, and Thomas Gage are displayed in ways that are captivating and intriguing. These famous people’s functions in the novel help to provide insight into their character by portraying their historical abilities and limitations in the context of the beginning of the American Revolution. Even minor details not famously known about these legends are seamlessly weaved into the plot in both subtle conversations and asides, which help flesh out these historical figures as three dimensional people and this is an added plus.
The inner turmoil displayed by the characters is fascinating, and displays various problems that were embedded within the time period of the nascent American Revolution such as dealing with the issues of race, gender, socioeconomic class, and the military presence of the British in America. Schnabel depicts both those who support the Patriot cause and those who stayed loyal to the king in a way that is balanced and gives the book realism and tension. The conflict within the novel continuously keeps the reader engaged, without being overwhelming.
Schnabel also depicts the anachronism of 21st century Americans being in the colonial period, and does so with flair and touches of humor that puts a smile on the reader’s face. Moreover, the novel provides historical context within a fictional environment of the dangers of the beginning of the American Revolution, and shows the hard efforts of both the colonials and the British prior to Lexington and Concord. The author’s grasp of the chronology of events is truly impressive, and the incorporation of the events that occurred while providing an alternative history is done with breathtaking effect. Schnabel pays attention in the book to details particular to that period, such as equipment, weapons, and even personal details like hygiene and dressing which indicates in depth research while making sure not to take away from the fictional component of the novel. This book offers a solid rendering of both science fiction and historical fiction and I highly recommend it.

Ms. Schnabel’s debut novel (One if By Land, Two if By . . . Submarine) is a spectacular success. I was predisposed to liking the book after reading the summary as I am a fan of history and science fiction. The novel exceeded even my high expectations. Even though the book seems to be targeted towards middle-grade students, children of all ages (I am 50 years old) will enjoy this action-packed adventure.

Kep, the primarily protagonist, is a fairly normal 13-year old who is an average student but who excels at swimming. He is a likeable kid but his sole focus on his individual swimming accomplishments. Kep finds himself at a revolutionary war reenactment camp teamed up with three larger than life children: Max (Kep’s Brainiac brother), T.J. (an over-the-top actor) and Tela (an outspoken vegan sharpshooter). Kep, Max, T.J. and Tela soon discover that “camp” is merely a prelude to being transported back to Boston in 1775 to take the place of Paul Revere and warn the colonists of an impending invasion of British Troops. In a 24-hour period, the four children face exhaustion, hunger, capture, imprisonment and fighting. The writing was extremely suspenseful and incredibly fast-paced. I was absorbed into the constant action and challenges of the protagonists in a manner that I had not been since the first book of The Hunger Games.

Teachers will especially like the book as woven within an action-packed thriller are numerous historical characters including John Hancock, Sam Adams, Thomas Gage and Phillis Wheatley. Kids will want to read the book for the sheer excitement but it presents an outstanding backdrop to talk about the causes and events of the American Revolution. Further, the historical characters in the novel will make students want to learn more about them. Moreover, Ms. Schnabel does not back away from challenging topics such as slavery, but she does so with a deftness that is appropriate for discussion in the classroom.

In summary, I highly recommend One if By Land, Two if By . . . Submarine and I look forward to future books in this series.

I didn't know what to expect when I read this book because this is the first historical fiction book that I have read. However, my experience reading this book will have me consider reading more historical fiction in the future.

The first couple of chapters of this book were a little slow, but there were enough tidbits indicating that more was to come soon. I was not disappointed. Once the adventure was afoot, I like how the story unfolded and left me wanting more. The book was very entertaining and it was not too predictable. That made this an enjoyable read. In addition, I appreciated how there was a diverse cast of main characters and each of then had their own strengths and weaknesses that played into the unfolding of the adventure. I also appreciated that the United States also was held to task for how it had treated some of its people in its history. Nothing was heavy-handed but it presented the question of whether or not the United States was worth saving. I appreciate that the answer to that question focused not only on what the United States was - but also what it could become. This book gave me a better sense of what the time period was like in the Boston area when the Revolutionary War started.

One of the messages the author was giving us was to respect the diversity of thought of what the United States is because we sometimes judge others that do not think as we do when we do not necessarily understand why they may think differently. I highly recommend this book because it is entertaining and there are important thought-provoking themes that we should all be aware of.

I was approved to read an advanced copy of One if by Land, Two if by Submarine by  Eileen Schnabel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Here are my thoughts on the book and why I think you should read it.

This book is based around a group of four kids who were hand picked for a special reenactment camp. Besides two of them being brothers, they didn't know each other and you really get to see their friendships blossom throughout. The author also gives them different backgrounds, one being a young black man, and the only girl being vegan who's father is a politician. With the backgrounds comes real life issues that certain kids face each day and that can make this book very relatable.

Eileen Schnabel has a great writing style that has a way of sucking you in. The first couple of chapters felt like some of the turn of events were obvious but after that point it was better and had me not expecting anything.

I didn't know what to expect with this book but I am glad I gave it a shot! The synopsis drew me in but the cover sealed the deal. I am also a fan of historical events and this book did not disappoint when it came to the historical aspect. I would say that it is more a middle-grade read than Teen/YA, but none the less, everyone should read this book! This book can be purchased starting October 2nd, 2018.

Note: egalley provided by the publisher for review through Netgalley. Thank you Curiosity Quills!

On with the review...

I found the premise of Eileen Schnabel's book intriguing - a group of modern kids being sent back in time to make sure a major event in the history of the United States doesn't get derailed by a potential villain. Oh, and try not to mess up history too much by doing it. The execution for me was lacking. There were info dumps and preachy points dropped in throughout. The main plot was decently done, even if the conceit never quite gelled nor the villain. The book desperately lacks a solid bad guy's presence that would have properly upped the stakes more than "if you don't succeed, you'll undo the history of America!"

I know this sounds like I'm harping on things a bit, but the fact is that I kept feeling like the point of the book was something other than what it was about. The main characters felt a bit like central casting and weren't really fully realized. That said, I think the age group will enjoy this book for the most part. Middle grade readers will certainly dig the action throughout and wonder if they, too, could hack it without their modern conveniences. But, all said and done, this never came to be a fully realized experience for me.

Eileen Schnabel’s One if by Land, Two if by Submarine, is an unpredictable bumpy journey back in time by four unsuspecting youths, who must try to save America from a tragic historical re-write. Kep, Tela, T.J. and Max are transported back to Boston 1775 on the eve of Paul Revere’s famous ride, only to discover that without their intervention, there will be no ride – no warning – no America to come home to. For me it was an intriguing page-turner that sucked me in to reading in three sittings over three days. The intermixing of time travel, history, adventure and morality kept me guessing when and how the next twist would surface. What moved me the most was how the initial band of misfit kids came together in a common bond to, “all leave together or not at all!” I held hope throughout that if they did succeed, the America they came back to would be a transformed place because of their actions, but I think the ending is fair and true. I look forward to further adventures of these four patriots, and hold hope that Mule will continue to be involved – he cracked me up. Since I am not the target demographic for Ms. Schnabel’s work, last night I started reading the book to my 11 & 14 year old daughters, who begged me to keep going well past their bedtimes….I think that says volumes more than all my ramblings!

"One If By Land, Two If By... Submarine" is a wonderful and delightful book that blends history with some sci fi, adventure with some fantasy. In some ways, reading this book reminds me of reading the first book of the Harry Potter series as the main characters of this book are also strong-willed kids with different personalities and skills who are not afraid of taking on challenges. Four kids, Kep, Max, T.J. and Tela were unknowingly sent through time machine back to Boston the day before the American Revolution started. Their mission: counter the sabotage caused by another group of time travelers who has captured Paul Revere and William Dawes and therefore save the American Revolution and preserve the American history. Furthermore, they only have 24 hours to finish the mission.

Despite the lack of resources and time, the four kids used their wits, skills, and more importantly--inner strength, to devise and adapt plans in order to accomplish the almost impossible mission. Along the way, they encountered many obstacles, met interesting historical figures, and come across quite a few interesting surprises.

From the ending, this book appears to be the first one in a series, and that is great! I am looking forward to read the rest of the series. Great read!

I run the popular Facebook page Hidden History and was asked to review Eileen's book. Here is what the Hidden History team thought of the book.

What would happen if Paul Revere was kidnapped and never made his famous midnight ride? Who would save the United States from this terrible disaster? One if by Land, Two if by…Submarine is a gripping time-travel novel, based in 1775 Boston! Eileen Schnabel weaves her fictional characters around the events of Boston on that fateful April night. America’s only hope is four young children, who have to time travel to the past, to recreate the famous event, while working against the clock. If they can’t complete their mission in 24 hours, the hope of the American colonies, and 21st century America is lost. As the story progresses, new and exciting discoveries are made by the time traveling children leaving them with a better sense of patriotism and a love for their country. This book is a page-turning read for any age and will leave you anxious for the sequel. Hidden History gladly gives the book five out of five stars and recommends it to anyone interested in time travel or Revolutionary War events.

It's a delight to read such a creative and fast-paced middle-grade novel by a first-time author! Kep and brother Max find themselves first in a Revolutionary War reenactment camp during the summer. Neither is crazy about being there, but it's okay because they're not there long. Soon the woman who runs the "camp" reveals that a villain named Fox plans to stop Paul Revere's ride by traveling back in time and they're the only ones who can prevent him. Kep, Max, and new friends TJ and Tela travel back in time, arriving in Revolutionary War-era Boston just as Paul Revere goes missing. That leaves the children to warn that the British army is coming.

The plot provides a dazzling series of twists throughout, blending science fiction and historical. Cliffhangers abound! But the book examines serious issues too, such as animal rights and slavery, in a fresh way. Never boring, always inviting, One If By Land, Two If By...Submarine makes a great read for any middle-grader, but it's especially good for so-called reluctant readers.

The best thing about it is that time travel actually does have a lasting effect on history!

This was a very interesting series to read. Teachers in our school district are always on the lookout for more historical fiction books that correlate with their history unit and this one will definitely be popular with our explorers, and the discovery of America.

One if by Land focuses on a change in American History when Paul Revere gets kidnapped by a time traveler, it's up to a team of misfits (one mainly named Kep) to go back in time with the help of Samuel Adams and John Hancock to rescue the kidnappings in time before there is no America left at all. Can they all save America before they all get captured and that it is gone for good?

All of the adventures in the book are definitely relatable to the young audience and they will invest their time greatly. The students will want to read this book and they'll be begging to read it instead of feeling like they are forced to for a project. We can't wait to add this to our collection and have our students and teachers reading it. That is why we are proud to give this book 5 stars!

This band of time-traveling revolutionaries delivers fun and adventure! In a whole new look at "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere," One If By Land, Two If By Submarine takes readers effortlessly into the past.

I love the characters in this story--Tesla, the Annie Oakley sharpshooter who happens to be vegetarian, Cooper, the movie star in progress whose distinguished parents have passed on a legacy of patriotism despite the dark shadows of slavery, and Kep, who would much rather be swimming at a meet than rescuing his history-mad younger brother from dangerous time travelers!

Very worth while!

Even though I’m not a fan of science fiction novels, the combination of time travel and the Revolutionary War in One if By Land, Two if By…Submarine results in an action packed adventure that you won’t want to put down!

Written for middle school grades, Schnabel’s debut novel is an entertaining read for kids and adults alike. It’s a captivating blend of ‘what if’ fantasy and detailed history, propelled along by four diverse and engaging characters who face and grow through difficult situations and topics. Never predictable and filled with historical characters that you’ll want to learn more about, this is a book that teachers will love to introduce to their classes, and children (and adults) will want to read way past their bedtimes!

I requested a free copy of Schnabel's historical science fiction novel from the publisher for review because I was interested in finding out why children would have been sent back in time to oppose an effort to prevent the American Revolution. Schnabel does have a credible explanation based on her ideas about how time travel works.

The characters that really captured my interest were the young time travelers, T.J. and Tela. T. J. is a young African American who wonders if support for the American Revolution is extending slavery. Tela is a vegan and an animal activist. I would love to see future books in the series that focus more centrally on T.J. or Tela.

I was fortunate enough to read an advanced copy, and even though this is supposed to be a children's book, adults will enjoy it just as much.

Eileen has come up with a truly unique premise of modern-day kids traveling back in time to find/rescue Paul Revere, or take over for him. Each character is fully formed and add interesting twists to this story. In fact, there are so many twists and turns that you won't see any major plot point coming.

It is also fun to come across "real" historical people (both black and white heroes) from history that Eileen weaves into the story in a meaningful way.

This book should be on every child's (and parents) reading list.

Wonderful book for kids, young adults and anyone who loves to read what the young generation is reading! This book is fun for anyone who enjoys action packed scenes and edge of your seats chapters. Oh, and there is lots of history thrown in as well! I love historical fiction books that entertain and make me curious to learn a bit more about a time in our nation's history and this book does just that! It not only touches on the obvious story of Paul Revere's ride, but it also weaves other famous Americans like Phyllis Wheatley and Prince Estabrook as well as John Hancock and Samuel Adams into the story. Great read and I can't wait for the next one!

ONE IF BY LAND, TWO IF BY... SUBMARINE is a fun to read adventure! The plot keeps the reader engaged with many narrow escapes, and the author has done her research to incorporate historical details which bring the past to life - all the more so by sending modern day children back in time to see it firsthand. I wasn’t a history buff in school, and a book like this would have made history class seem more relevant and interesting. This book would be a wonderful addition to a school curriculum to better engage students, and also great for parents seeking a well-written, thought-provoking adventure book for their children to dive into.

This is a pacey, page-turning action adventure for ages 9 to 99. Readers will quickly become immersed in the historic setting as Team Kep feel the red, white, and blue blood pumping through their veins and answer the call of duty. The stakes could never be higher. Readers will follow Kep and Co as they blaze along the same trail as Paul Revere, rub elbows with fellow patriots like Adams and Hancock, as well as duck the odd volleys of hot lead. This is an enjoyable and edge-of-the seat story thanks to the twisty plot and plethora of colorful characters—heroes and villains alike.

I could not put this book down!! The cliffhangers kept me wanting more and really moved the plot forward. Never a dull moment! The characters were diverse, yet their differences helped them fit into a cohesive group. Character change from beginning to end brought the story full circle. I would not typically read historical American fiction but am glad I got my hands on this ARC. Kudos to an up and coming MG lit author on her first book! Can’t wait to see what Kep and friends get into next.

I really enjoyed One if by Land, Two if by Submarine. I love reading historical fiction and this is one of the best books I’ve read. The characters had to persevere and I enjoyed reading how inventive they had to be. It was so cool that the author put kids in the place of important historical figures. I love how brave Kep became and how he would do anything to save his friends and his country.

It was humbling to write this story. So many risked their lives in the monumental task of founding a free nation. Freedom never has and never will come free. I am grateful to the soldiers in battle, the abolitionists in the pulpits, the founders in political arenas, the women and men who gave their all when the odds must have seemed impossible. We all stand on the shoulders of giants. Thanks for letting me share the story! Kind regards, Eileen Schnabel

I won this book as part of a goodreads giveaway. I will avoid posting spoilers for the book so feel free to read the review and find out about this great book.

While I did not initially realize it was targeted as a young teen book, the story was interesting for a range of audiences. As a person years out of college, I was glued to this book, and found the story to be engaging and interesting. The story had two elements I enjoyed, history and time travel, and I loved every minute of reading and becoming invested in the characters.

While I am not as familiar with revolutionary history, the story kept it grounded enough to know the key people to follow the story and did not get bogged down with trying to shove as many historical figures as they could into the book. This made the story easier to follow and allows the reader to focus on the main characters, TJ, Tela, Max, and Kep, and how they become motivated to be heroes in the story.

The story is a sci-fi, historical fiction, and mystery all wrapped into one, as I was trying to figure out who was causing certain actions in the story, and had many surprising twists. As I read, I was reminded of a few other forms of media I have watched and read about. These included the historical time travel of Connie Willis’ books, the Back to the Future series, and Percy Jackson series, as elements of each were sprinkled in. For Connie Willis influence, it was preserving historical accuracy and not changing anything not needing to be changed. For Back to the Future, it was the family aspect and how difficult moments made for the characters to improvise without messing up the timeline, but accidentally doing a few things to influence the future. As for Percy Jackson, the action was geared to a younger audience, but still was a page turner for me as an adult, and kept unfolding at a rapid pace.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes time travel or history. I think the humor, excitement, and knowledge in the book have a nice balance and make for a fun reader’s experience. I hope to read future works from the author as it states this will be a series.

I received a copy of this ebook in a Goodreads giveaway.
I thought that the story was fun, the twists and turns didn’t really surprise or excite me, but they might for a younger reader.
I felt that some of the issues that the book brought up and discussed didn’t really get resolved but overall it was an enjoyable ride.

Not bad, but some of it seemed very far-fetched (not to mention there were some details that made the story complicated and confusing, but I could've been over-thinking it). I think my 4th graders would enjoy this as long as they didn't over-think the details, too.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for my honest review.
