The competition could save her life...
But only if she wins.

Talise can manipulate the elements with ease; water, air, earth, and fire all bend to her will. As a citizen of the Storm—a crime-laden land where death is the only constant—her only chance for a better life is to become Master Shaper.

A competition for the position takes place at the end of her training years. If she wins, she would live in the palace, work for the emperor, and escape her inevitable death in the Storm. But she’s not the only one with a chance to win.

Aaden is another talented student. As a citizen of the Crown, he was born with unlimited privilege and resources. When someone from the Crown wants to win, they do. End of story. And his shaping is unlike anything Talise has ever seen.

Complicating matters, Talise’s loved one in the Storm gives her reason to abandon the competition altogether, forcing her to make an impossible choice.

Torn between duty and freedom, she must learn that clinging to the past, might destroy her future.

For fans of Red Queen, the Grishaverse, and Avatar the Last Airbender, this desperate fantasy world has elemental magic and tension you could cut with a knife.

"For fans of Red Queen, the Grishaverse, and Avatar the Last Airbender..."

I can see Red Queen, I can see Avatar just as a passing resemblance, but for the life of me, I cannot see Grishaverse. That people have powers? They are both fantasy? There are kingdoms? Maybe?

Either way, the resemblance to Red Queen is uncanny to the point it feels as a copy of a different version. You have the poor, little girl who lived in the worst place and no one could have powers from there and not only that, but of course she has extraordinary affinity to said powers. It deviates from Red Queen's story as Talise joins without hiding her identity to the academy, where she meets friends but also an interesting male rival. It is fairly obvious though, how Talise will change the world, just like Mare.

Based on the structure of the series, which is divided in 12 books of ~100 pages, I did not expect a lot, but something easy to pass the time. And that is what you get. World building is adequate, story is still a fledgling, characters are very two dimensional and lastly, writing is sorely lacking.

Relatability comes and goes pretty fast and Aaden, the mysterious rich boy, is a very annoying character surprisingly. I say surprisingly because we barely really see him talk, but in almost every scene manages to act like 12 years old. Actually, I had to remind myself while reading this book that the characters were around 17-18 years old and did not start puberty right then and there.

Either way, my rating might be a bit low as 2.5 stars would be more accurate but "ok" is the word that would describe the book best. It is an ok effort for a start and I sincerely hope the writing becomes more natural, because as it stands, characters are always at the right time however much time passes and the deus ex machina slowly creep up.

EBook provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

Let’s start saying that this book had potential, it would have been an amazing book had it been a bit longer and with more descriptions. I found it to be a little essential in descriptions. The thing that kept me reading and actually made me like the book overall was the plot and the world building. I wish I‘d seen more interactions between characters.
I loved the 7 year old Talise, I loved Aaden and I liked their relationship.

Final vote: 3.5/5

This book is easily one of my new favorites- and I'm horrible at choosing favorites! Kay has earned a reader for life. The way she describes things- like emotions- is so unique and amazing! Not too mention the STORY itself is sooooo captivating! I actually read the short story version of this by being on her newsletter, and I couldn't stop thinking about how much I loved it. So when I saw it as a full book, I was more excited than a kid going to Disneyland! I ADORE this book and cannot wait for the rest of the series!!! I'll be waiting with baited breath!!! 😍

Let’s start saying that this book would have been an amazing book had it been a bit longer and with more descriptions. I found it to be a little essential in descriptions. The thing that kept me reading and actually made me like the book overall was the plot and the world building. I wish I‘d seen more interactions between characters.

The continent of Kamdaria is a world of striking contrasts and for Talise, being from the Storm: a region of deep poverty and any criminal act can doom your family for generations; wants something better for her and her mother. Her ability to shape the natural elements could be the ticket out of the Storm, that is if she makes it through not only the training required but becomes the champion in an intense competition. And with a fiery determination Talise is someone you can’t help but root for her to earn her place in this complex story.

Talise is a Shaper, shaping the elements of air, earth, fire and water. This short fantasy novel takes us on her journey at the Academy to attempt to become the best and escape the Storm. There are a few central characters which are reasonably interesting, although a bit stereotypical. But this is an engaging and original read and the following volumes should prove to be interesting.

Kay L. Moody has written an amazing story, one that has me excited for the following books. This book is short so before you know, it’s over, and all you want is more. Kay L. Moody is definitely an author to watch out for because with this series she’s going to be on everyone’s radar.

The story was beautifully written. The author made the characters lifelike through her writing skills. The way she described the way Talise shaped her elements and her emotions are truly worth mentioning.

However, the thing that didn’t much amuse me was how this book has no purpose. It just goes on in a nonchalant kind of way without any suspense. This was a big disappointment as I expect a book to be self satisfactory. I know in a series every book has to be read to know the ending but every book should be a character of its own and this book has no such role except just an introduction for the next novels. The story did end in suspense which I liked very much.

The story is a quick and easy read; The story well plotted and the world building is on point. This seems like a really cool world and magic system, I love elemental magic, it just needs more fleshing out. Ice Crown is not long enough to allow for an appropriate amount of character development. I think we’re supposed to sympathize with the main character’s loss but we don’t even know her or have a real understanding of her relationship with this person.

Everything was told to us instead of being shown; while this is a short novella and things need to be presented quickly, I do think these explanations could have flowed better instead of just being delivered as statements.

The friendship between Talise and Wendy was adorable, and Wendy had an amazing personality. I would have liked to be able to get to know the side characters better; it wouldn’t have hurt to add some more length to the story and included background info on Wendy and Aaden.

The world building is fun but again, I want more of it. Kamdaria and particularly the Storm were very interesting to me. As interesting as the shaping of the elements. The rules and social constructs are something that I hope the rest of the story delves further into.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series and seeing how things play out but after a lot of thought. The book is an interesting read. Overall, this is a really cool world and a really interesting concept. And that is precisely why I want to see more. It was so short and narrowly focused, almost like we were expected to know things that we could not possibly know. I would have really liked to see this story fleshed out more but definitely look forward to the rest of the series.

*Thanks to Book Sirens and the publisher for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*

**3.5 out 5 stars!
This novella started out really slow for me which oftentimes isn't a great sign when the whole book is only 100-something pages. However, this story became very intriguing somewhere in the middle and kept on getting more entertaining until the last page! The concept of this story is really cool; the ability to shape elements and an academy where you can learn how to shape these elements. The concept is a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My biggest complaint is that I didn't really feel connected to the characters. I mean, what can you expect. It's a novella, the author doesn't really have time for major character back stories and development. With the time she did have, I feel that the author did a good job of helping us get to know Talise, the main character, the best she could. I am sure we will get more character development (maybe even romance??) in the next books, so that's why I didn't dock off major stars for the lack of character connection. Overall, this was a fun read! I will definitely be reading the next story in this series!!

On Goodreads, the synopsis says for fans of Avatar the Last Airbender. My husband, Wy and I love the Last Airbender. So my first thought is this better not disappoint.

Talise is from the outer ring called the Storm. The Storm is where the lowest members live (i.e. criminals and their families who cannot get out). Even though one person commits a crime, the family is sent to the Storm. I’m confused about this. I think that is a weird system. I may have read the laws wrong but it doesn’t make much sense.

They never left because life in the Storm required crime. It required stealing from trade wagons just so there would be a slice of bread for dinner. It required threatening guards so they wouldn’t torment a neighbor. It required saving rainwater just so there would be something to drink after a day of labor.

People never left the Storm. Never. Especially not children who were seven years old. Unless they got into the academy.

Talise at the start of the book is headed to the Academy. It ends right before the competition. Talise learns of some news before she is supposed to compete. She has to make a decision to stay or to go.

I skimmed most of this book. There wasn’t anything that really captivated me. The laws were confusing. I wish there was more to this book. More to flush out. I feel like if we got more details of the world it wouldn’t be as confusing. This seemed more of a tell than a show. It had potential but didn’t fully live up to it. I think I will pass on this series.

I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. The story really drew me in with compelling characters and motivations. Perhaps not destined to be a classic, but really enjoyable none-the-less. The story ended with a cliff-hanger that was more appropriate for a tv series pilot than a book series, but it definitely made me want to read the next book. This book was squeaky clean and appropriate for all ages, but it still dealt with issues like grief, survival, and friendship.

Short YA fantasy novel - engaging and interesting

Talise comes from the Storm, the part of this land where criminals and their families live in poverty. She is a Shaper, shaping the elements of air, earth, fire and water. This short fantasy novel takes us on her journey at the Academy to attempt to become the best and escape the Storm. There are a few central characters which are reasonably interesting, although a bit stereotypical. A little too much introspection for my liking mars the experience but this is an engaging and original read and the following volumes should prove to be interesting. Recommended to fantasy novel lovers but bear in mind that this aimed at the YA readership. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

An excellent beginning! I had read an excerpt earlier on so the last few chapters were fresh in my mind. However reading about how Talise got to the Academy as well as more about her background was my favourite bit.

It’s easy to forget how young these characters are because of what they face they seem so much older. So to have her vulnerability thrown into the mix of emotions that we experience really makes her pop.

I really liked this story and it promises even more amazing twists with the next book!

Kay L. Moody has written an amazing story , one that has me excited for part 2 . Her world building is fantastic and the main characters draw you and become like old friends . The emotion carried throughout this book deal because you feel it . This book is short so before you know it's over and all you want is more . Kay L. Moody is definitely an author to watch out for because with this series she's going to be on everyone's radar . So go buy this book and leave a review .

I’m so into this story!

Wow..... I just love everything about this. It’s like academy meets Airbender. Talise is a great mc, she’s definitely had it rough and worked her way through despite the odds against her. I love the relationship between her and Marmie it’s so touching. And the ending, I’m just over here hoping things work out for Talise. I would be so disappointed we if all her hard work were for nothing at the end. I’m just so glad I don’t have to wait to find out.

This book is a very fast read. It doesn't linger in areas, and in fact there is more that I would have liked to see, like training updates instead of just "10 years later". It follows Talise who is from the poorest area called the Storm and whom has never has seen one that can bend elements, especially like she can.

Talise can leave the Storm forever, is after the 10 years of training her element manipulations she wins the final competition to work for the emperor. She has Marmie who is her loved one that pushed her forward to this training and to try to win her own way out of the storm, but there will be no way out for Marmie herself.

In the final year (year 10) all the schools gather their last class and puts them together, that is where Talise meets Aaden. One who might just beat her out of the competition if she is not careful. She sees a trick that Aaden has up his sleeve which is very impressive, so she has to think of way to out do that trick or else she won't have a hope of winning in her mind. Does she risk it to try and win, or does she just give up and go home to Marmie.

There is one twist that I won't say much about, but it's big and could impact what happens.

I loved this book from start to end, I wish there was more in the area where she was training, maybe show some struggles she had to overcome to get to the point she is at after the 10 years, but other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Can't wait for the second book in the series.

I read this book in an hour and a half. It can barely be called a book at 140 pages - it's more like a novelette or an extended short story. Ice Crown basically introduces the reader to main character Talise, who is a prodigy at "shaping" - physically manipulating via magic - the elements of fire, water, earth and air.

We briefly meet Talise at 7 as her mother brings her from the Storm lands to the capital of Kamdaria to be tested for shaping talent. No one is allowed to escape exile in Storm, a place of crime, poverty and starvation, unless they become the King's "Master Shaper." The path to that goal is years of study and training at the university, culminating in a competition to be named Master Shaper by the King.

The book quickly jumps to Talise at 17 (fantasy writers do love teenagers), in her last year and preparing for the competition. There are trials and obstacles, of course, including a conflict with a handsome boy who will end up, I'm sure, as the love of her life or her implacable enemy, and the story ends just before the competition.

Most Goodreads reviews of Ice Crown are higher than mine, so this may be for you. My opinion could be influenced by my irritation at the abrupt and way-too-soon ending. The writing was fine, but, honestly, I saw nothing much that was new or fascinating. I can read this series for free with my Kindle Unlimited membership, but I don't know if I'll continue or not.

I got this book based on the cover while flipping through titles for stuff your kindle day, and boy, did I luck out! It is a very quick read and ends on a major cliffhanger.

This book definitely captured my attention. The world building and characters are interesting. I am eager to get the next few books to find out what happens next. There is a pretty quick jump from Talise's introduction as a 7 year old leaving the only 'home' she's ever known to 10 years later and being mere weeks from, hopefully, successfully completing her goals in life to escape the 'Storm'. There isn't a whole lot of background on where she comes from other than that it is where criminals are sent and that it is nearly impossible to escape, but i feel like that is because she is already leaving it aslt the start of the book. She is incredibly powerful and gifted even at 7, and by the time she's nearly 18 and preparing for the final competition, she has only gotten stronger. However, there are a few expected and unexpected twists. This book was only a small taste into her world, and I am eager to continue her story and learn what happens next. I was able to finish this book in a few hours. I wish the book would have given me a little more at the end. This cliffhanger is brutal!

Ice Crown (The Elements of Kamdaria #1) by Kay L Moody is a YA fantasy story and is a good start to the series. My only problem was that it was very short, I felt there could have been so much more fleshing out the ten years the story jumped and perhaps more background on a seven year old Talise and the world in which they live. Having said that though Kay has given us an exciting new world to enjoy and takes us on the journey of ups and downs with our main character. It is a little emotional and caused a bit of heartache but I loved Talises strength.

Talise is only seven years old when she is to perform before strangers. Her mother wants her to have a good life and the only way to do that is to prove her worth at the Academy. Coming from the Storm, a place where no one wants to live, a place where you waste away and die in the wasteland where nothing grows.

My favourite line in the book is - Nobody liked people from the Storm. Even people in the Storm didn't like people from the Storm.

I did enjoy the story and am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

I recieved a free copy of this book via Booksirens in exchange for an honest review.

From the beginning I was entranced in this book. Talise is a great MC, even when she was young, although I did feel when she was being portrayed as seven, she felt older. I was a little annoyed with the time jump at first but that was because I wanted to read about what was happening. But once I got into the next chapter I didn't care. It was so well written adn interesting I caould barely put the book down.

I loved the magic or shaping as it was called in this series. Really interesting idea and different than anything else I have read. The series is made up of short books, so quick but exciting and jam packed books.

Wendy was a nice side character although I think she could have donw with a little more personality. I was a little miffed as to why no-one else though they could try for master shaper, surely everyone should have been trying their hardest.

Overall I loved this book, and I will be reading the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a break well needed from prior books I had read/dnf. It was a very easy short read.

It left a lot to the imagination, as it wasn't full of world building, or character building and was straight to the point and into the plot. I did wish it had finished completely, as I hadn't realised it was a series, being such a short read, I wish the books could have been combined, as there are 12 books in this series, which I hadnt realised. (I think I purchased via a stuff your kindle day, but I could be wrong).

It also leaves you with a cliff hanger at the end, which was more or less the point and build up of the book, to then not find out the answers. Which I found quite frustrating.

But the book is also aimed at more for teens and young adult readers, so I feel that the length of the books could also be because of that.

"ICE THROUGH THE FINGERS, FIRE IN THE VEINS"

This series of novellas is set up like YA Chapter Books. I am hopeful that the series will roll out quickly because I am anxious to figure out what is going on.

Told in single POV, the first chapter of ICE CROWN is set 10 years prior to the rest of the story. It gives a little bit of background and perspective of things to come. In this series

The story is a quick and easy read; The writing is appropriately detailed, the story well plotted and the world building is on point. There are political undertones to the story and it is almost like the writer is looking at the future if we continue putting so much distance between the classes.

I absolutely recommend this story. .

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, this has not changed my opinion in any way.

I really liked the premise of this book, especially the magic system (yes give me more elemental based magic please) and I enjoyed the worldbuilding (though I had hoped for a bit more). Unfortunately, I felt like it was way too short for me to make a proper connection to this book. I didn't really like any of the characters, but I think if the story had been longer I would have. I do think I am going to read the sequel asap but yeah, unfortunately, this book fell a bit flat for me.

I have read the whole series of the Elements of Kamdaria already. I do think that this is a great opening story to really draw you in to start the first book of this series. Just this small part of the book already gives so much emotion especially towards Talise. But the ending of the short story really leaves you will do many questions especially ones about Aaden. I love this series and I wish I would’ve read this part first so I could have been more eager about the series. This is a great start to find out if this book series will interest you. Spoiler alert… it will!

I feel as though this has all the tropes to be a book I eat up. I enjoy the premise, and elemental powers are fun. However, something is missing. I think it’s the writing style and characters. It hits enough plot points to almost keep me going, but I don’t feel immersed in the story. I think the characters are a bit flat, and that’s a deal breaker because I mainly read stories for characters and their development and relationships. I liked talise enough, but Aden was really immature. His actions kind of change on a dime, creating a non cohesive character. One scene, he’ll seem kind and mysterious, and another he’ll act like a 12 year old.

Wow! I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I loved it. There was adventure, love of family, friendships, determination and a little magic.
Talisa was bound and determined to become the best and pursued herself towards that goal. The end of chapter 13 had me on pins and needles .

I love this one quote from the beginning of the book:
"Wait," the woman said. "I just wanted to say how special you are. You made my son laugh when everyone else just scowled. And you're a Shaper from the Storm. You'll change Karmadria for the better, my dear. I'm sure of it.

I can't wait for book 2.

It's really cool cause if you're a fan of avatar, the grishaverse, it's inspired by them and I was really excited! It's just that, it's very short and the writings are sloppy. I couldn't really connect with the characters and understand them well. But I love reading about the shaping elements tho. I just wish for more but since this is a series, I might opt to read book 2. Anyway, it was an easy read and I did enjoy some of the parts.

I really liked this quick read! I was able to read the 136 page book within a couple of hours. The world building and magic system was quick and easy to understand. I like the FMC quite a bit.

I do wish however it were longer. At the end I was left feeling like the climax didn’t hit and it left me feeling a bit deflated.
