Amelia Faulkner was born in Thame, Oxfordshire, and sprouted upward in short order. The ground around Thame is reasonably mucky, especially in the winter, and she can’t be blamed for wanting to get away from it.

Raised on a steady diet of Star Trek and Doctor Who, Amelia stood no chance in not becoming a grade-A geek. She has sat on the board of the British Fantasy Society, contributed fiction and fluff to various published roleplaying games, and written non-fiction for SciFiNow and SFX Magazines. For every positive there is an equal and opposite negative, and Amelia is forced to admit that she loves Wild Wild West.

Heed the warnings for this one because this gets dark:

I was worried after the last couple of books that this series would end with a whimper instead of a bang, but thankfully I had nothing to worry about. And I can reiterate, definitively, that book 4 can be skipped as everything that's revealed there is brought up here - not in every detail but enough to know what you missed. I was also worried I'd have to endure more of Freddy and Mikey's POV, but thankfully that didn't happen. Sadly but I can deal with that when I get there. I was hoping to see

The big showdown with the Duke has come at last and it's just as messed up as I'd thought it'd be. I got so angry at Freddy and Mikey multiple times, and I still can't really buy their relationship - and thus Freddy's motivation. I'd more easily believe that Freddy's pride was insulted by his dad presuming to take a plaything away from him than I do that he actually cares about Mikey but whatever, it was a smallish part of the plot and not lingered over too much.

It was neat to see Windsor take a more active role in the story, now that he's a little older and learning new words. :D Lawrence and Quentin are put through the ringer in this one though and it's often difficult to read because all their weaknesses are used against them. Both of them have grown and changed so much since the first book and their adventure here tests all of that growth to its limits. I really had no idea how this was all going to be resolved, which just added to the angst and intrigue.

This was a wild ride and once the action gets going it doesn't really let up until the end. It was hard to put down at times and it went quickly. We get a nice little epilogue that hints at what the next arc is going to be dealing with, and I for one will be eagerly awaiting that release.

Review:
Wow, this one felt so different from the other books! A whirlwind. That's what this book felt like, in a good way. Almost sort of thriller-esque, with characters being kidnapped and traveling halfway across the world to chase down the baddies and making frantic plans.

It really ratcheted up the tension and danger and action. When I think about it, I don't recall that much action in the sense of fighting, more like lots of energy and movement and inner chaos and sometimes outer chaos. As one of the descriptions says, Quentin was in "a race against time," and as the reader, I could feel that. I could also feel how frayed he was getting as the book went on. Laurence too, at times. Somehow, the author made the book feel very frenetic.

This one also brought to fruition a lot of what was being set up in previous books. The overarching plot. But only one part, there's still more for these characters!

Speaking of which, we were back with Laurence and Quentin this time, and they're great. They have their struggles, they know about each other's struggles and have seen each other at their worst, but they have each other and are there to support each other. Also, I felt especially terrible for Quentin in this one, but I was proud of him too. When it was Laurence at stake, he really stepped up and dove right out of his comfort zone.

Freddy and Michael were back too, though not the stars of the show.

Lots of supernatural powers and magic. Freddy's powers are so interesting; there are some ways of using telepathy in these books that I've never come across or thought about before. Quentin's and Laurence's powers are interesting too, especially as the men get better at using them, but Freddy's are just next level.

Anyway, a whirlwind of a book, and a great one in the series!

**SPOILER warning about events of the previous books. Spoilers about this book under tags.**

End of the line for this “season”, I really liked how things ended (for now) and how we got there.

After the time spent inside Freddy and Mikey’s heads in the last book, I was glad to be back with Quentin and Laurence. It wasn’t always pleasant, actually I think this book was probably the worst of the series in that regard, , but at least with Quentin and Laurence I can suffer with and for them and rage at whoever is hurting them, not at them.

Freddy is still a cold bastard and nothing that happened in this book made me like him more or changed my mind about him.
He was put in an awful situation by his father's threats and he did the best he could out of it, within all the limitations of his sociopathic nature. I can be sympathetic about that, but that’s it.
My dislike for him runs deeper and is all tied up in who he is and his disregard for anyone else’s feelings, how he doesn’t seem to comprehend that other people are not toys, that it’s wrong to use them. And that’s something he’d been doing long before his father forced his hand by threatening Mikey and without any reason beyond the simple fact that he could and it made his life easier.
He says he loves his brothers and maybe he does, as much as he’s capable of love and showing it in the only twisted way he knows, but he goes at it all wrong.

After this book, it really seems like Quentin is the most well-adjusted member of his family. *snorts*
Technically, there’s still Nicholas as an unknown quantity, but the odds don’t seem very good.

Speaking of Quentin, I loved his character’s arc in this book, he’s really come a long way from the beginning of the series and I enjoyed seeing him mature, facing his demons without losing himself along the way.
I really can’t see how he can

As with every book in this series, the epilogue paved the way for new developments and I’m intrigued, I can’t wait for the next book.

On a final note..."Poop". I love Windsor. :D

Good book. Good series.

Trigger warnings: past (not in this book but recounted) sexual abuse, rape, torture, incest, (and in this book) heroin addiction.

The book starts out in a very dark place.

I don't want to say too much, but although I am not much good with such dark elements as listed above, having finished the book I am in an okay state, and looking forward to the next book. Faulkner is one hell of a skilled writer, to do such a good job.

This series is getting better and better (not taking into account book4 which I consider more like a companion).
The plot in this one made me all emotional because of its implications for the major characters. It was heartbreacking and all what I was hoping for in this sequel.
I can't wait for the next book to come out to see where the author is going to take us next because the stakes are getting higher and higher !

This whole series is a hard read, but especially this book. I don't want to talk too much about it because I don't want to spoil anything. However, this is not for the faint hearted, I warn you. I finished the book two days ago, but I needed time to process. All that hurt, confusion and guilt the characters are through, sometimes is too much. This book is full of condemnable actions, wrong decisions and some hope at the end, but not the at the very end because that one left us wondering what's going to happen next. Let's see how we go from here on. Definetively an author to keep an eye on.

Oh I didn't want it to end. I love love love this book. The whole series in fact. There are often good books out there. Occasionally there are great ones. But this one is a whole other level. The whole series falls into the EPIC category. You know what I mean. The books that come to mind first in why you love to read. Amelia Faulkner has created a series that fits that to a T. I dove in and was swept into Lawrence and Quen's world. i even slowed down how fast I was reading as I got near the end. I didn't want to leave. I wish they would make movies on these books. These will be the ones displayed proudly on my shelve and re-read many times. Amelia Faulkner has created a masterpiece. I highly recommend all of the Inheritance books.

Once more, I read Reeve of Veils and Page of Tricks back to back, so I hope I don't get the two mixed up in my review.
This series could last for twenty books, and I don't believe I would ever believe anything Freddy says. His every breath is about manipulating those around him. The threat to Mikey and himself is genuine, but the ease and quickness with which he agrees to do as his father says are telling. It makes me think he would do the same if Mikey were not a factor in any way. I believe there is a bit of cowardice on Freddy's part that makes him lean so hard on Quentin and Laurence.
It is just awful the way he traumatizes Quentin. His brother! To force him to remember something so appalling, especially when he has no one to love and support him through the mind altering pain of the memories is unconscionable. And what he does to Laurence is just as bad. To treat them both like puppets and risk Quentin's very sanity is atrocious. And the threat to Laurence's life through his addition is just as bad.
A lot is going on in this book. Tricks and treats, if you will. I like Laurence's Mom, and Rufus is still a likable, grouchy prick. The Duke is overwhelming in his horribly insane ideas and actions. I understand Quentin's viewpoint, but I wanted to see the blood and guts fly. Ugh!!
I found myself lost from time to time when even the characters did not know if Freddy was controlling them. It is wonderfully confusing.
Windsor is quickly becoming my favorite character. Poop!

Wow, this began with a blast, and it never slows down, even for a bit. Dread permeates the whole story; Quentin's father has made his move setting Frederick as his weapon of choice to destroy Laurence and take control of Quentin. The danger keeps growing and growing and the end of the fight seems to be unavoidable...

An amazing story, the end of the arc, but not of the menaces to Laurence and Quentin. Gosh, I need to get the next two books ASAP!

As always, Seb Yarrick dies a fantastic work with the narration.

Another excellent book in the series! Interesting to see the one storyline wrapped up and super curious to see what's to come next. I knew we wouldn't get more Mikey/Freddy POV chapters, but it did please me greatly to see them be such a large part of this story. I mean, they had to be, but we still got a fairly deep look into them and that was wonderful. Honestly, this series just keeps getting better and I'm awed by the scope of the story.

Another awesome read!

This series continues to thrill and excite. Laurence & Quentin are 2 of my favorite all time characters and you cannot help but love them. The love between them comes through on each page and you cannot help but cheer for them and want them to overcome all of the obstacles that stand in their way. I cannot wait for the book in this series.

Narration: 4.5⭐️

*Quick note: This is NOT a standalone book so the review contains plotlines from the previous four books*

Once again Amelia Faulkner has written an intense, heartbreaking and excellent example of PNR at its finest with “Page of Tricks”, the fifth installment in the Inheritance series. Quentin’s father, Hieronymus D’Arcy is desperate to bring Quentin home so that he can begin his magical training and continue the D’Arcy family line. After Laurence and Quentin defeat the demon Hieronymus sent to coerce Quentin into coming home in “Lord of Ravens”, he threatens Frederick with his death and the destruction of his lover if Frederick does not help him use Laurence to bring Quentin back to England.

As Quentin and Laurence fight to protect one another, they must also fight their individual self doubts and weaknesses that are being used against them to shatter their sanity and relationship. At its core, the story revolves around the strength, pain and resolve necessary to confront the inner demons that both MCs battle on a daily basis and how again, each man has to depend more on the power in their connection and love than on the psychic abilities and magic they possess in order to survive.

As PoT brings the threat Hieronymus has posed indirectly in the previous four books front and center, the pacing is very fast, with a narrative that deftly balances action, gut-wrenching exposition and character development with an ending that is as emotionally complex as the characters. This book is an emotional juggernaut and turning point for the MCs, as well as Frederick, Mikey and Rufus and another standout addition to the genre.

As to the narration, for the most part Seb Yarrick nails the emotions, voices and tone of the series. It cannot be an easy task to take over a series after it has seen previous narration and completely redo them, yet Yarrick has done a masterful job. While it did take me some time to get used to certain traits of his delivery having listened to the Leslie narration, I applaud the fact that he was able to give Quentin and Laurence similar voices to what they had previously, while still making the series his own. Moreover, his delivery of scenes that were gut-wrenching when read two years ago, brought to life the horror, terror and emotion within them in a truly impactful way. All in all, a great pairing for a great series.

SPOILER ALERT!

This book is very well written as are the other books in the inheritance series, and I couldn't put it down despite being an emotionally hard read (as many have mentioned).

However what annoyed me to no end, was the fact that the emotional rape, the cruel taking over one's thoughts, actions, and reality, isn't acknowledged as rape. Eventually, all is forgiven as if it never happened and, to me, it doesn't seem believable (and I'm a person who loves fantasy...). Perhaps I'm more vindictive than the average person, but it spoiled the book for me, hence the one star.

I'm wavering between four and five stars on this instalment. Up to 95%, I was barely able to set the book aside and get on with other stuff, like sleeping, working, what-have-you. The last 5% (bar one chapter) I could have done without, although I'm aware that for many readers of this series it will be the perfect conclusion to Page of Tricks.

The switching POV really drives the story forward - I can't say more than that without spoilers. Quentin's and Laurence's psyches are on full view, and it's not pretty, but their emotional states are authentic responses to their predicament and the way the action plays out is in keeping with how the characters have developed over the previous instalments. This is fast-paced, dark and compelling. The magic/psychic stuff I don't even think about; it's so realistic and very well done.

I still adore Quentin.

Windsor is awesome. Yes!

I was gifted a copy of this book direct from the author, that I write a review was not required but I am doing!!

Because, people!! You NEEEEEEEEED to read these books!!

This is book 5 in the Inheritance series, and you really REALLY need to read books one, Jack of Thorns, book two, Knight of Flames and book 3, Lord of Ravens. Book 4, Reeve of Veils, is not really required but if you do read it, you might have issues with Freddie, I did!!!

Freddie has been tasked with ruining Quentin by their father, and the only way he knows how to do that, is by ruining Laurence. So he kidnaps Laurence and takes him to England, forcing Quentin to follow. A battle of wits there follows, and its unclear just who will come out alive.

Struggling to word what I need to say, without giving too much of the plot away, so forgive me if I waffle!

These books (bar book four, because I HATED Freddie in that book!) are all 5 stars reads and this one did NOT disappoint. We get more about just what happened to Quentin at the hands of his father, and Quentin gets it too, after blocking it out for so many years. Its a wonder the man isn't insane! It's painful reading, really painful and you do feel a kind of .....Lord help me for saying so.... you feel a bit sorry for the Duke, because HE suffered too, and HIS father and so on. Makes you kinda see the WHY he did what he did, kinda, sorta. Oh please don't hate me, I'm just trying to get how I feel out!!

Laurence and Quentin spend much of this book apart, but when they come together at the end??? OOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! |Those boys is getting their dirty on, yes ma'am, they certainly are! Maybe with Quentin finally admitting, at least to himself, what went on, he can fully embrace his relationship with Laurence.

Oh. And Windsor, the raven is just too darn cute here. His connection to Laurence as his familiar is growing as Windsor does, becoming stronger. Can't wait to see what happens there! And wouldn't you, the baby's first word is POOP!

I'm loving that, at the end, there is a epilogue, from we know not who. Who throws a spanner in the works. Who makes you think "WTF" over and over. So I'm loving that, because I cannot see where this all is going! LOVE being kept on my toes. Love not knowing whats gonna come at me.

Very dark, with sexual abuse and drug abuse here, so some readers may find these books difficult reading.

BUT amazing, really amazing books!!

Thank you, Ms Faulkner, for me copy.

Windsor!!!

I love him! I think I spent most of this book day nonononononono over and over in my head! SPOILERS AWAIT YOU!!!

Ok so while I am loving this series and this book is 5 star I am slightly conflicted. I read Reeve of Veils and came out of the other side with a slight soft spot for Freddy and Mikey. That was destroyed. Aromantic? He definitely had some kind of love for Mikey to go through all that. Maybe obsession or ownership fits better than love lol Sociopath is definitely a good fit selfish, cruel and emotionless with a fixation on Michael. After everything I was waiting for Quentins big declaration that he no longer had a twin brother. It’s what Freddy deserved and was a pretty anticlimactic conclusion. I’m not sure there’s any way for his redemption. I mean the author can try but I’ll never get there LOL what he did to Laurence was brutal and one of the coldest deliveries of torture I’ve ever read. I felt sorry for Mikey coming to the sad realisation that he was abused and an abuser in book 4. I felt really bad for him and his journey but then he turned around and did worse so my sympathy was crushed pretty hard lol I still love Quentin and Laurence together and the relationship journey is beautiful. I happen to love D/s books and will actively seek them out...I’m not sure how that will work here as when Quentin declares he will take charge of Laurence in all ways I did balk a little....it didn’t really fit them. I’m excited to see how that will work out though. So I guess we’ll be delving into some bdsm if Laurence likes pain. I understand reading some reviews that people are mad about the switch as it’s nice to know at the beginning of a series if there with be any power exchange or bdsm dynamics. Completely understandable. I have these boys in my heart now so I shall carry on!

Book 5 in the Inheritance Series NOT a standalone!

**Trigger warnings: this book contains graphic child abuse and rape**

Wow...ok so I'm just going to say it...Freddy was kind of hitting close to being a Hieronymus Jr just minus the incest part

Now if you thought after reading LoR and RoV (books 3&4) you would get a little emotional break think again it just gets more intense for Quentin and Laurence, these two MC's are so vulnerable emotionally and physically but when it comes to each other they're stronger than all the characters that we've come to love and hate in this series, at one point in Page of Tricks they are both pushed to breaking point by Freddy who in trying to save the one he loves leads Quentin to deal head on with evil incarnate himself...The Duke and when you think the knife can't get anymore twisted Amelia hits you with the epilogue and it's like did I read that correctly let me read it again...yes yes she did you wonderful evil women!

Page of Tricks is book 5 in Amelia's Inheritance series and it is by far your typical HEA mm pnr romance it's dark oh my hells bells it gets dark and will send your emotions spiralling.

I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, just wow! So this was the book we have all been waiting for and the previous books have been building up to; the confrontation with the "father" For the first half of the book we find out the the Duke has successfully forced Fredrick off the sidelines and very much into the game. I was not a fan of Fredrick at this point and wanted to kill him. The action starts pretty much from the beginning as Freddy kidnaps Laurence (and does unforgivable things to him) in order to force Quentin to come to the rescue. Quentin also finds out the secret Laurence has been keeping from him and does not react well. There are lots of places in the story that were hard to read; addiction, child abuse, it was all there. I can't say that I was overly thrilled about what happened with the Duke, but I guess it fit with the characters involved. Fredrick also does not escape without my diminished opinion, but I guess he did what he had to do. The devotion between Quentin and Laurence continues to be the heart of the story and once again brought me to tears. The other great news is that the epilouge seems to indicate that this may not be the last we hear from this couple. Yeah!!

My problem with this book? Freddy's power. I don't have an issue with the character per se or how he acts as they are all aligned to his personality. However, what completely irked me beyond my limits was how strong the author made his psychic powers.

Reading thoughs? Sure.
Controlling people? Fine.
Conjuring illusions? Yes.
Mindwipe? Ok.
Mind-control animals? Hum...
Being able to do all from miles away? Nope.
Looking through the eyes of the "primed" individuals and extent his control towards people who are not remotely in Freddy's vicinity? Nope, nope, nope.
Apparently, he is even able to projecting his thoughts into Quentin's mind when he was supposed to be immune.

That is overpowered to the point where I couldn't read without re-evaluating every character interaction since he was introduced. Moreover, were I inclined to keep reading the series, those intrusive doubts would undoubtedly spoil the experience. "What if Freddy met this new character before? What if he is keeping tabs on Windsor? What if he influences Myrian?"

As a consequence, a huge portion of the story's inadvertedly shifted towards Freddy at the expense of the main duo. This tarnished the whole book (and series) for me. :/

This book hurt soooo bad and I'm not talking about the stuff with Quentin and his father. I'm talking about Laurence. He deserved so much better and I feel like the author let him down in the worst way. Of all the paths she could have taken she chose the one that possessed the most cruelty and at times it was just too much.

What makes him so important as a secondary character that allowed everyone to excuse his malevolence? Does his existence contribute a necessary plot point that will unravel to reveal some greater purpose for him in future books?

At the end of the day he was an adult and his choices were his own. He showed no remorse. There should have been consequences for his actions instead of having those around him feel sympathetic towards him like the choices he made weren't selfish and self-serving. I don't see what he brings to the story other than making me not want to continue with the series.

This book has no redeeming qualities. I'm completely and utterly done with this series.

November 30, 2017:
Full review to come - this was a mixed bag of emotions, and gets all the stars.

October 28, 2018:
Shame on me. I should have written this review up a year ago when I first read it, but I didn’t. I was too emotionally traumatized by it to think straight, and here I am, a year later finally typing up the quotes I had highlighted and everything, and wishing I was writing this review a year ago. Because, and now especially that the next book in the series, Rites of Winter (Inheritance, #6) is out, I know that I’ll just have to do a re-read of them all before picking up Rites of Winter. Because these books are that good, that I keep reading them each time a new one comes out, even though that also means that I get emotionally torn to shreds, with my heart torn out and stabbed and shredded (not necessarily in that order, either…).

In the meantime, I’ll do my best.

This book hooked me from the very beginning, and if I had any less self-control than I do (which is a larger amount than is really normal, I think, and I regret it), then I would have read this entire book in one weekend, to heck with any other responsibilities and obligations that I had. It dug its claws into me so hard, I think I still feel them a year later as I typed up the quotes. Not only is the story excellent, it’s emotional, it keeps you gripping the pages of your book/phone/Kindle/nook/reading-format-of-choice until you have to peel your fingers away carefully and then soak them in scented water to pamper them for the harsh treatment you have just subjected them to. It broke my heart over and over, and had me wondering just when/how I got this darned attached to these characters over the course of the four books preceding this one. Really, I’m mystified as to the power of this series over me.

So yes, do read it, but start from the beginning in Jack of Thorns. You will not regret it. Well, except for the lingering emotional trauma, but then you’re in good company for that :) – there’s a whole club of us over on Facebook, led by the Queen of Trauma herself, Ms. Amelia Faulkner. At the very least, to balance out the trauma we get some really lovely scenes (emotional and steamy each) out of the deal, so it all works out in the end to leave readers like me wanting more now.

Favorite quotes:
The idea of Freddy loving anyone was like trying to jam a square peg through a round hole. – page 84/314 (chapter 11)

This book was riveting but very hard to read. There is a lot of dark subject matter in this book, so be aware. It is really painful to read in many places. The things that Quentin and Laurence go through in this book are horrendous. I felt for both of them. I really disliked Frederick and Michael going into this book and even though the author tried to justify their actions, I haven’t changed my opinions on them at all.

This book is definitely not meant to be read as a stand-alone. I think you will be lost if you try to read it on its own. As with the other books in the series, the epilogue sets up the events in the next book. I can’t really say it ends in a HFN. I felt very unsettled after finishing the book and don’t feel that it left Laurence and Quentin in a particularly good place. It did leave me wanting to know what happens in the future. I really want the MCs to get their HEA, I’m just afraid of what they are going to have to go through to get there.

This is my favorite book in the series so far. There was action, there was angst, there was relationship development. One thing I love about these characters is that they can stand on their own. Laurence and Quentin are both interesting in their own right, and don't need to always share a scene to hold my attention. Heck, they were separated for a good chunk of the book but each have their own personal issues to deal with. There is still so much room for them to grow as a couple and as individuals.

This is the book that Quentin finally learns the full truth about his past, and it's pretty devastating for him. Laurence is such a sweetheart and so supportive. Usually I don't care for pet names, but every time he calls Quentin hon, baby, or Quen I just love it.

I also liked the resolution with Quentin's father. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of him, but I think the decisions Quentin made were in line with his character and made sense.

Overall, I just had a good time with this. After book 3, which I found a bit boring, this was much needed.

Damn, the intensity of this one was off the charts. It was so high, honestly, I had to cheat my way through the book after the first few chapters so that I could slow down and enjoy reading it slowly later.

Forces are working to break Laurence and Quentin apart. The peril they are in at the hands of people who should be on their side was overwhelming. I'm lucky I cheated or I'd be out of fingernails, that's for sure.

I don't want to give too much away, but I have to say that I LOVE Windsor! His personality is so damn cute, and I can't wait to see more of him in future books.

The epilogue lets us know that there will be another book. I just hope Laurence and Quentin notice the danger that is out to use them.

Wow! I have to say I was so looking forward to this story. This series has become one of my absolute favorites. Laurence and Quen undo me completely. I had to walk away a few times and I don't like to give spoilers but let me just say, Freddy is NOT my favorite person right now and Quen is a better man than pretty much everyone. I will have to read again. I tried to go slow to digest what was happening but this story and these characters suck me in and I get lost and find myself reading as fast as possible as if I can help these amazing men through their treacherous journey. I am worn out and will be unable to begin to read another book for a while, a sure sign of a great book from an amazing author.

I started listening to this series earlier in the week and as a consequence I went into this book cold. No idea about the visceral reaction I'd have to the book. I'm sure it's a well written piece with a lot of twists with a great climax. Unfortunately I had to listen in fast forward for most of it. I got the first hour in full and the last hour, the rest in snatches if 5 min here or 1 min there.

Unfortunately, I'm giving this series up in self defense. It makes me sad. I like the MCs and I can even appreciate the twatty twin, there are many plot threads that would have been great to explore.
