One forbidden love. Two broken hearts. Three Little Things.

Hattie Waltz should forget the troubled neighbor leaving for boot camp in 1917. He forgot about her ages ago. It had always been the Waltzes verses the Kregers, his family pitted against hers. When she hands him a farewell gift, a chemistry lesson unfolds. The good kind.

Arno Kreger can't leave Iowa or his old man fast enough. He's eager to prove his worth on the battlefield and stop blaming himself for his brother's death. Before entering the train, he bumps into Hattie. He's loved her forever, always from the sidelines, because nobody crosses Hattie's pa.

One innocent letter soon morphs into many. Arno and Hattie share three little secrets in each letter and grow closer together. But he's on his way to war across the ocean, and she's still in her father's house. Their newfound love will need to survive dangers on both fronts.

I had never heard of Patti Stockdale before but I am sure glad I took a chance and picked up THREE LITTLE THINGS. Ms. Stockdale instantly hooked me and pulled me right in from the very first page and never let me go. Hang on tight! It is going to be a very crazy and bumpy ride! Patti Stockdale’s debut novel is loosely based on the letters her grandparents exchanged during the war. THREE LITTLE THINGS has just the right amount of romance, mystery, and historical fiction. Hattie and Arno are going to feel like the reader’s friends before the middle of this amazing story.

THREE LITTLE THINGS shows how when we turn ourselves over to God anything is possible. I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy clean reads with true to life characters. One forbidden love. Two broken hearts. Three Little Things. Patti Stockdale grabs her readers by the heart and never lets them go. Hattie has always had a crush on Arno, her neighbor. When he leaves for boot camp in 1917, she knows she should just forget him. He is nothing but trouble and her father would never approve of them courting. But Hattie and Arno start corresponding and they really get to know each other by revealing three little things in each letter.

All the characters in THREE LITTLE THINGS are very relatable and not perfect at all. You can’t help but feel each emotion that they are dealing with. When one of them was happy, I was happy. When Hattie was crying, I was crying too. I love when an author does that to their readers. I truly was an emotional mess after reading this heart tugging story. Now that I have read THREE LITTLE THINGS and discovered Patti Stockdale, I’m excited to read more of this new to me, auto buy from now on author. If you are looking for a heart tugging read that is filled with troubling times, but still fills you with hope, please take a chance and read THREE LITTLE THINGS. It is so real that you need to keep the tissues close by because your emotions are going to be on one crazy roller coaster ride. Once you finish devouring this story, you are going to want to tell everyone you know about this awesome book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from JustRead Publicity Tours. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Charming and moving, Patti Stockdale‘s Three Little Things tells a sweet story of two wounded souls. Hattie and Arno are appealing characters, and their personal growth and their building romance will draw you in. The novel also sheds light on women’s roles on the Home Front in WWI and the persecution of German-Americans, something rarely discussed. With touches of both humor and depth, this story is a keeper!

This book is the story of Hattie and Arno, a story of empathy and courage. It is a coming of age story about young hearts. Through their endeavours during World War 1, they grow to discover the true meaning of compassion, of patience and endurance. These very human, flawed characters overcome the enemy: doubts, fear, guilt, isolation, grief, pain and loneliness. The fragments of their story is told in love letters, sent on the wings of love.
More than a romance, this heartwarming well-researched story is memorable, drawing on the realities of the wartime effort.
I love the thematic holism of the text, with Hattie and Arno's growing knowledge of each other, of each other's history, mirroring the wider sweep of History in the making.
Hattie and Arno's characterisation sparkles with believable dialogue and exquisite descriptive detail. Secondary characters each play their own part in "creating" and "retelling" Hattie and Arno's intimate story, hindering their relationship or helping it along. Dramatic tension and conflict is built with the "three" of the recurring triangle. The hermeneutic gap between the exterior and interior, "thinking" and "feeling," "appearances" and "reality," spurs the reader on.
In places, this tale is a tear-jerker. But pages of wartime love letters, the threads of a "string of pearls," the steps of a dance, the words of a song are there to reveal a romantic, hopeful ending.
Finally, readers discover "three little things" that make the meaning; what is important to Hattie and Arno, what matters in our lives, is true of lasting love.

This debut novel is a unique blend of fact and fiction As the story unfolds, readers dive deeper into Arno and Hattie. Just when readers can (or think they can) predict what's next, Stockdale adds another surprising twist. Three Little Things has one wondering what's next for these young lovers and wishing for more. Is there a sequel? As I read, I found myself pondering about my grandparents' love story and appreciating my ancestors and history more deeply.

Arno and Hattie's love story will charm your socks off. You'll have to read the book to see what I mean. Stockdale's debut novel is loosely based on the letters her grandparents exchanged during the war. Tenderly and skillfully told, this story is so sweet and so endearing, the characters so well-developed, I loved every page. Along with its memorable characters, I especially enjoyed the WWI setting and the intricacies of the small, close-knit Midwestern community portrayed in the story. If you enjoy historical fiction with sweet, clean romance this book is a must-read.

Three Little Things by Patti Stockdale is a marvellous heart-felt historical Christian novel based on the author’s maternal grandparent’s lives during World War I. Fact meets fiction in this story that is both sweet and powerful. It is sweet because of the love story and it is powerful because of the strength of characters.
The reader experiences WWI from the American perspective – on the home front, in a boot camp and in France. War touches all lives – those who go and those who remain behind.
Life is fragile, love is beautiful and loss is painful. “Those who grieve don’t carry around a calendar.” The novel deals not only with death in war but death in childhood gone by. It is “an ache [that] gnawed him daily.” Loss consumes us with survivor’s guilt. Why him and not me? What right do I have to be happy? We need to bring our guilt to God and learn to live again.
The reader sees life on the home front. There are war initiatives to provide finances, goods and encouragement to the troops. Letters are written to encourage those going to war. My personal favourite was the knitting of socks and putting a proverb inside them. Those left behind worked tirelessly for the troops.
We cannot stop life happening to us but we all have a choice as to how to respond. We can “either light a candle or curse the darkness.” With the help of God we can be the light in a dark world.
With wonderfully drawn characters in a small town setting, there is an atmosphere of community that pervades the novel, enveloping the reader. Needs are met as the community pulls together. There is an air of realism as not everyone you meet is nice and there are some friendship rivalries. There is also some racial tension as those of German origin or with German names are viewed with suspicion and distrust. The ugly side of prejudice rears its head at times but is squashed by those with good hearts and souls.
Three Little Things was a delightful read that warmed my heart and soul. It has left me feeling good about life.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

I love to read stories about love during times of war, especially when letters are involved. For me, the notes between Arno and Hattie are what really made the book special. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing both sides of the story, seeing their intimate thoughts when they are separate, and really get to know their characters. BUT there is just something about letters that get to me in a story. I think it just makes it more personable, and more real.

Stockdale did a wonderful job in transporting me back in time - a time when things were tough, people suffered pain and loss, and yet among that was this tiny sliver of hope. Not only did Stockdale mange to grab my emotions, but she brought me into the story. I didn't feel as if I was reading a book, I felt like I was living it. That's no easy task, especially for a debut novel! She also did a great job of reminding me Who is in charge of it all, and Who we can rely on in the midst of a battle. Her writing is just so vivid, heartwarming, and beautiful. I highly encourage you to set aside a big chunk of reading time before diving in!

Three Little Things is a beautiful, poetic, and heartwarming story that will captivate readers. I look forward to seeing what Stockdale has in the future. I know I'll be adding the next book to my TBR pile :)

“Three Little Things” is a delightful story set during World War I. It’s filled with a fetching cast of characters and borne along by the author’s entertaining sense of humor. The narration reminds us that many folks were suspicious of people with German ancestry during the war, even though they were American citizens and even using the common term “gesundheit,” and that children of German immigrants were drafted to fight against their parents’ former countrymen.
Young Iowa men were trained into soldiering, where there were still rivalries--some about girls back home, some about German sympathies--and sent across to fight the Kaiser’s troops in France. Some didn’t return home, some came back with broken bodies. There is a compelling scene with wounded veterans in a local hospital, at least one scarred on the inside and fighting his own private battle.
This winsome story also carries themes of acceptance, forgiveness, strangers becoming friends, reframing troubles from the past, and reveals a nickname for someone named Shamrock. An engaging story on many levels. Highly recommended.

I was intrigued that this novel originated from the author’s grandparents’ letters to each other and anxiously anticipated finding out what the “Three Little Things” was all about. This historical romance did not disappoint, and I succumbed to the story of Hattie and Arno and how they coped with personal loss and war time, yet keeping their faith. I loved Hattie’s little sassy streaks! I thoroughly enjoyed the “three little things” in each letter and how Hattie and Arno confided in each other their most intimate thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams through their correspondence. I am hoping that Patti Stockdale will be writing another book soon because I will certainly be looking forward to reading it.

Wow. This debut author nailed it!

This is the kind of book that feeds my soul. Honest, pure, and engaging.

The unfolding romance between Arno and Hattie is tender and sweet and obviously the focal point of the story. However, Arno and Hattie must both face complications in relationships with parents, siblings, friends, and foes as they learn to navigate their affection for each other. The author didn't miss a detail in developing the characters, the story arc, the tension, the setting, the dialogue, and every letter containing "three little things." The book is so carefully crafted, it's like watching a well-directed movie. You won't want it to end!

What a lovely book! Accolades to this debut author for allowing me to escape into the world of Arno and Hattie for three glorious hours. Patti Stockdale has a real gift for telling a story. Better not start this book until you know you have time to finish, because you won't want to put it down.

Three things I loved about this book.
1. The story was stellar. I don't usually read war stories and I don't know why I did this one but it was wonderful. The story of Arno and Hattie will bring tears to your eyes. Their love story was so sweet. I loved their devotion to each other despite the war and distance.
2. I loved reading how they found a way to be together despite the distance and obstacles between them.
3. My heart went out for their pain and loss. I think the hardest person to forgive is ourself. I admired Hattie's patience with Arno despite the fact that she had her own loss and pain to deal with.

I loved this love story. I really did. You'd fall in love with Arno and Hattie.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Patti Stockdale’s, Three Little Things, is beautifully written! The inspiration for Patti’s debut historical fiction novel, came from the love letters her grandparents wrote to each other during WW1, when her grandfather was called to serve his country. The sweet love story of Arno and Hattie unfolds, as they share three little things about themselves in each letter. I found myself anticipating and excited for the next letter. Patti’s descriptive words and phrases made me feel as if I was right there in small town Iowa in 1917. Her witty play on words made it extra fun and enjoyable to read. This book is a wonderful combination of historical fiction, mystery, and a romantic love story, so no matter what your favorite genre is, this is a must read for everyone! I absolutely loved every page, and I can’t wait for book number two!

I thought this might be a typical love story, but it was so much more than that, and the journey through the book encapsulated me. It was like sitting with a good friend who's telling a story, and you don't want any interruptions because you are thirsty for every detail. This was a book I had a hard time putting down after the first chapter. Patti Stockdale has a way with words, and her writing has me looking forward to her next novel.

There is no doubt this story was written with love, not just love between the heroine and hero but love from the author as well. Reading the account of the author’s process for research and writing was nearly as stimulating as the book itself.

Three Little Things is a story about love that matures during World War I although it encompasses so much more than the central story of Arno and Hattie. We watch the love story between the two develop as they correspond and share three little things that are important to them. In our days of telephone, texting and internet it can be hard to imagine writing letters and the excruciating wait for mail but for Arno and Hattie who were not only separated by distance but also by disapproval, the wait matured their love.

While Arno and Hattie learn about each other and fall in love, the reader has an in-depth soldier’s view of the training for war and of war itself, and how the expectations didn’t match the experience. We also learn what it was like to be the ones left behind. The last few scenes in the book are especially touching.

Three Little things is well researched and well written. I felt as if I was part of the scenes at bootcamp and could really picture the surroundings and activities. And I loved the mention of Fort Dix since that’s where my brother started his military life.

If you love historical fiction that is based on a true story, or if you love stories about the lives of people who lived through WW1, Three Little Things is perfect for you. Or if you’re looking for a new time period to read about and love small town life, give Three Little Things a read. I loved the story and recommend it to you.

As I turned the last page of Three Little Things, I was sad to see the sweet love story between Arno and Hattie end. I sure fell in love with these two characters and am secretly hoping for a sequel!

Patti Stockdale did a fantastic job on her debut novel. The character development - exceptional, the storyline - intriguing, and the historical setting - perfection! I can't wait to see what's next for this up and coming author. Anything she writes, I'll definitely be reading. Do yourself a favor and pick a copy of Three Little Things. It will not disappoint.

This story had my attention and stirred my imagination from the start. I could visualize the train waiting for men to board and take them to boot camp. A song being sung. Hugs and goodbyes. Heartstrings pulled to the limit, and knitted socks being handed out by the women.

Reading this historical account based on Stockdale’s grandparents’ relationships will take you back to another time. A time where there isn’t the Internet and modern methods of communication. Instead, there is the excruciating wait for the mail to be delivered.

The central story revolves around Arno and Hattie. A tender love develops as they correspond and begin to share three little things that are important to them.

If for some reason it all sounds a little too predictable, don’t jump to conclusions. Stockdale might have a few twists and surprises that will keep you turning pages.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Recommended for
anyone who likes historical fiction (based on a true story), mystery and a touching love story.

What I Liked Most
The descriptions aren’t overdone. There is just enough to visualize and experience the happenings during WWI. I also like the fact that the romance, mystery, and historical factors weave together beautifully.

My Favorite Three Little Things about Three Little Things by Patti Stockdale

1. Patti transports you back in time in her debut novel, Three Little Things. Sometimes historical fiction can be dry as croutons. Her story, set during WWl, is like a luscious summer watermelon full of yummy sweetness. Not only do we get a glimpse of soldiers in training and in the field, but we also identify with Hattie and her friends' desire to be supportive on the home front.
2. Inspired by her Grandparents' letters to one another during this time period, Patti created the wonderful love story of Hattie and Arno. Their dialog is full of humor and fun. You can’t help but love these two as they journey towards their happy-ever-after.
3. Like the socks Hattie and her friends knit for the soldiers, small-town values are interlaced throughout the book. Sacrifice, service, loyalty, appreciation for community, hard work and love of family are cleverly woven into this narrative.

I know you’ll love this book! I can’t wait for her next novel!

Three Little Things is a historical romance tale of two young lovers, Hattie and Arno, who grew up together but grow emotionally close while separated during World War I. Their relationship is deepened through the letters they write to one another, in which they share personal and intimate thoughts. While the story is fiction, it was inspired by letters written by the author’s grandparents during the war and is backed by well-researched historical facts. The author’s style and use of local period idioms really help to set the scene of a small, close-knit Midwestern community during war time. The characters – the young couple, their parents and many friends and neighbors - are all well-developed and appealing. I really enjoyed Ms. Stockdale’s writing style which kept me interested and anxious to read on as the sweet story developed. I also appreciated how well edited and proofed this debut novel is. I’m anxious to read more by Ms. Stockdale.

This beautifully written historical novel was born after author Patti Stockdale’s family found a tin of letters that had been shared between her grandparents during WW1. When Arlo left for military training, he and Hattie were friends. But as time and distance separated them, the letters they sent to each other brought them closer together by each sharing three little things about themselves that the other didn’t know. I knew by the time I got through the first few pages that this was going to be a book that I couldn’t put down. I’m hoping for a sequel!

Hattie and Arno’s story charmed me from the first pages. Reading Three Little Things was like being transported to another place and time, experiencing life and love and loss on the American home front during WWI. Inspired by actual love letters passed between a German-American soldier and a young woman doing her part to serve her country from her small Iowa town, the historical authenticity of the story shines through. Patti Stockdale has a distinct writing style with charming turns of phrase that infuses her characters with larger than life personality. This is her debut novel, but from here on out I have a feeling people will be able to pick up one of her books and a few lines in be able to say, “This has to be a Stockdale novel!” Looking forward to more from this author.
