Georgian Gentlemen #1

The Noble Smuggler

Rate this book
Despite living at her father’s inn her entire life, Elizabeth Doyle has always managed to avoid involvement with the smugglers who frequently gather there. Until now. When a handsome smuggler is brought to her with dire injuries, Elizabeth risks everything to hide him—completely unaware that the wounded man is not who he appears to be.

When an opportunity arises to infiltrate the notorious smuggling gang he believes caused his father’s death, Jonas Ainsworth, the Viscount Langton, pretends to be one of them. But when he is wounded midcharade, Jonas’s life is placed in the hands of an unlikely savior: a smuggler’s daughter. Forced to flee before his wounds have fully healed, he does not think he will ever see her again—until she appears on his doorstep, seeking safe haven. Divided by their social standings yet united in their mutual desire to expose the leader of the smuggling ring, Jonas and Elizabeth are undeniably drawn to each other. Neither realizes, however, that they are dangerously close to uncovering explosive secrets from the past—secrets that will alter the course of their lives forever.

SSSSQQQQUUUUEEEEEEEEEPPPPPP!!!!

I have just discovered yet another fantabulously talented new-to-me author and I am in such a twitterpated state I'm having problems collecting my thoughts about this swoonalicious Regency romance (with smugglers!) I can't even...but I'm gonna try.

Okay, here goes. Did I mention smugglers? Think Daphne Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn only not as dark and moody. But these aren't just smugglers -- they're wreckers!!! That means they deliberately guide ships to their doom so they can plunder their cargo. Kind of like land pirates. And Elizabeth's father is high up in their ranks. He is utterly vile and I do so love booing a nefarious villain, especially when he gets his comeuppance at the end. :-)

So there's Elizabeth, practically a captive in her father's tavern. She has nothing to do with the smuggling, but, of course, she'd never be allowed to leave because she knows too much. (Insert a cold shiver of dread here because scary awful things happen!) And then Jonas shows up disguised as one of the smugglers and Elizabeth's life suddenly gets even more complicated!

I loved every blissful second of this book. They mystery (and there's more than one!), the danger, the dastardly villains (again -- plural!!!) and an inn keeper's daughter with a secret she doesn't even know she possesses! Squeal! Eeep! Squeep! And that Jonas! I swooned a hole right through my fainting couch, I tell ya! I'm still a ditzy state of bibliophile bliss!

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Noah Wall and she did such an amazing job I was completely spellbound!

Sidenote: While not a Christian Fiction selection (my usual genre) this is absolutely, positively a clean read! Woot!

This was beautifully well done. Heavy on the historical fiction aspects with a lot of very well researched details to give the plot a lot of backbone and depth.

A very slow build relationship that had some hand flex type moments of romance.

I'm very impressed with this author!

Will be in my next vlog

I am such a fan of Sian Ann Bessey. Her books make me happy and so grateful to be a reader. Seriously. I'm a fan.

This book transported me right to the coast in England and a little inn with Elizabeth who I fell in love with right away. Downtrodden, abused and lonely yet still keeping that little light in her heart, Elizabeth is a heroine worth rooting for. I loved her resilience, determination and the softness that she carried despite the hardness around her.

Jonas is a good man from a good family. I loved the dynamics of his family and how it really gave me a sense of who Jonas was at his core. He is all things a hero should be in my book.

This book had a great flow that had me invested and interested from beginning to end. There was a growing plot that developed right along with the relationships in this story. It felt full and I had the best time watching it all play out in my head. I didn't want to put it down and I was a wee bit sad when it was over. I loved it. LOVED it.

Content: peril, violence, kissing

Suspense, smuggling, secrets, suitors and so much more lay within the pages of this book. I was hooked from the beginning. A death and a secret revealed (or hinted at) starts of the beginning of the book. And from there, the suspense keeps building and more secrets are divulged and discovered. And I loved it all!

Sian Ann Bessey is a go to author for me and her newest book pulled me in and delivered a thrilling tale with characters that I adored. Elizabeth and Jonas. They have been raised completely different. Are of two differing classes and backgrounds, but their friendship and growing love proves that all of that doesn't completely matter.

I really enjoyed Jonas and his family, and how their part in this story. I loved how they treated Elizabeth and befriended her. There are secrets that they have to keep for a time and that created some fun humorous tension and angst. It put Jonas in a tight spot for a little bit but thankfully his servant helped him out of that one.

The history and author's note were very well integrated into the story. I found it all very fascinating. I've read several books set in this time period and location and have loved them all.

If you're wondering about this book being more than suspense and secrets...never fear! There is most definitely a sweet and tender love story that develops right along with the reader ferreting out all of the secrets. The twists and turns were delivered and revealed at all the right spots with some surprises thrown in as well. Elizabeth and Jonas were a couple I had no trouble cheering on and hoping for a happy ending for them. I'm hoping that there might possibly be another book written about another character in this book...or two characters. Jonas' sister's story and his friend's story as well. They would be quite fabulous.

Content: Clean. There are scenes of suspense and peril but nothing graphic. Some talk of death and smuggling. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I am sighing happily. Coming to the end of a good book is bitter-sweet. It's sweet because there is resolution and bitter because I wish the book would continue.

This book takes place in England around the time of the United State's war for Independence. King George is on the throne and the tea tax is a crucial part of the plot. I have never considered the impact of the tax on the people from Great Britain. The tea tax to me conjures images of the Boston Tea Party. This story centers around the smuggling aspect of the tea tax.

Early on it is revealed that Viscount Langston (Jonas) is disguising himself as a smuggler to infiltrate a gang of smugglers. He needs to find out if the smugglers killed his father years ago. Plus, the smuggling is happening on the shores near his home. His escapade leads him on a different road than he planned on. He suffers an injury and meets the beautiful daughter of the innkeeper.

This book did my heart so much good and brought a smile to my face. The beginning of the book was a little slower pacing, but by the end, I couldn't put the book down. I loved so many of the characters. I fell in love with the family of Viscount Langston. They're good people with good hearts who don't ask many questions when asked to take in a young woman fleeing from her abusive father.

The book has a few plot twists that felt natural to me. In fact, I had guessed a few of them early on. Instead of feeling like it was predictable, it kept me reading anxiously to the end to see if I was right. Sian Ann Bessey always produces a well-written book with a solid plot and fantastic characters and setting. I seriously love every book of hers that I have read. I will continue to anxiously anticipate her new releases.

I loved everything about this book--the cover, the title (it's perfect!), and especially our hero, Jonas Ainsworth, Viscount Langton. I love when people of wealth or title use their position to do the right thing, but it's even better when they pretend to be something or someone they aren't to right the wrongs of society.

Jonas is such a great character. He lives by a moral code and fights for what's right. It's this code that makes him go undercover in a smuggling ring to find out who's in charge so he can stop it. Jonas also wants to find answers to lingering questions about his father's death at the hands of smugglers many years before. He's also gentle and cares for his family, he's got a great sense of humor and of course he's handsome. I loved his relationship with his mother and sister, and his friend Alexander.

The heroine, Elizabeth Doyle is also a wonderful character. She's had a rough life, to say the least, and with her mother's death at the beginning of the book, unfortunately it gets worse. She's forced to work at her father's inn, which is at the center of the smuggling ring, but she's courageous and strong. That's not to say she isn't afraid at times, but she doesn't let her fear incapacitate her. When Jonas is injured she helps him knowing she'll have to endure the rath of her father.

This book sucked me into 1782, a time when smuggling was rampant. I was captivated by the story the author wove involving Jonas and Elizabeth and how they worked together. This book had everything I love--a mystery, some suspenseful moments, some romance, wonderful main characters, all wrapped into a captivating story with a twist towards the end that I didn't see coming. One of the things I love about Sian Ann Bessey's books is that she incorporates actual events and people of that era into her stories. She points these out in her author notes at the end of the book. I always learn something while escaping into another place and time.

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Many will pick up this book because, yes, stunning cover... isn’t it?!! You might be a fan of the hit series Poldark, and decide this is for you. It has ALL the elements of a great story. Strong, relatable MC - who you will emotionally connect with, right from the start. Hidden mystery, smuggling, bad guys, a twist like no other! Of course, a developing well-paced romance. This author will take you on yet another great adventure, weaving in true historical events to give it credibility and truth.

I loved so many things about this story, I kept wishing there would be more, from these characters and this place.

If you are a fan of Michelle Griep, this book will appeal to you. In every way. Similar time period, locations and gripping, page turning effect!

I read an early ARC. This is my honest review.

Historical romance published April, 1, 2020 by Covenant Communications.
Stand-alone, clean romance with a HEA.
This was a slow burn romance and I felt like the first 60 % dragged, gathering all the important details to carry out the story. That part felt like a 2 star. At 65% it picked up quite a bit and really started holding my attention. I love romance novels but I felt like this one lacked the butterflies and swoon worthy scenes. It was good but it could of been better.
The h and H hardly spent anytime together and I couldn’t feel the chemistry. If you’re not crazy like me about romance then you’ll probably love this. I would definitely read another book by this author.

This was a NETGALLEY gift from the publisher and all opinions are my own. I gave an honest review.

What's not to love about a noble smuggler? I mean, come on! Yes, please. And this story delivered on all my expectations.

With shades of Jamaica Inn, author Sian Ann Bessey weaves a tale of danger, intrigue, and a sweet romance that satisfies by the end of the tale. What I loved most, though, was all the historical facts sprinkled throughout. From wreckers to William Pitt, this history loving gal was very pleased.

If you're looking for a clean read that's full of adventure, this is the book for you.

Really enjoyed this! The story had some twists and turns that I did not see coming. (I probably should have given how much I read but nope!) The hero and heroine are both admirable people, and I love their intertwining story. I also love the hero’s mother and sister, the former so calm and sweet and the latter so decisive and spunky. I can’t wait to read the Earl of Bloxley’s story!

What stood out to me first was the era- late 1700's. The politics of the time come into play along with powdered wigs, but both were used moderately- thank goodness! ;) Elizabeth and Jonas both rescue each other in turn, and their bond forms quickly. They instinctively trust, even before they know the secrets the other is hiding. There is a wonderful sense of anticipation and suspense throughout the entire story as they work together to end the smuggling through more than one avenue, and uncover the mystery behind Jonas's father's death. I especially enjoyed the mother and sister of Jonas and the unpretentious way they accept and embrace Elizabeth into their fold. Elizabeth never aspires to join the upper class, feeling more comfortable with a future as a maid, but her role in undermining the master of the smugglers keeps her uncovering clues with Jonas and his family and friends. All the while the danger mounts from both the smugglers and her unscrupulous father and corrupt magistrate. While I wished for more chemistry and romantic development between Jonas and Elizabeth, the strong plot kept me glued to the pages as I read to the satisfying conclusion.

I really enjoyed this book! It had mystery, intrigue, hidden identities, and romance all rolled into a beautiful story set in Kent.

Elizabeth has a difficult life as an innkeeper's daughter who is forced to serve her father's smuggler friends. But when a smuggler is shot and brought to the inn, she tends to him and starts to see him as more than a smuggler. She barely has time to recognize her feelings, however, before her father has betrothed her to an odious magistrate. Elizabeth is desperate to get away, but where can she turn?

Jonas, the Viscount Langton, infiltrates a smuggling gang to find out what truly happened to his father who died trying to stop a ship from falling into the smuggler's hands. When things go wrong, Jonas is shot and meets the lovely innkeeper's daughter. He can't reveal his true identity as the Viscount Langton, but as their connection grows stronger, he might not have any choice.

The author does a phenomenal job in setting the scene and has obviously done her homework on smuggling. The details really gave the story an extra dimension. The characters were well-drawn and believable and the romance was so tender. I loved how Elizabeth had been through so much, but her resilient spirit still kept a tiny flame of hope that she would one day find happiness. Jonas is a swoon-worthy hero, both as a smuggler and a viscount. The mystery of who is running the smuggling operation and what happened with Jonas's father kept me turning pages just as much as the romance unfolding did. The author seamlessly weaves a mystery romance together that historical fans won't want to miss. I was sad to see this one end and I really hope the Earl of Bloxley gets his own story!

4.5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed the history and the adventure of this story. The relationship building was sweet. A half star was docked for what I thought was too much abuse/danger of the main female character and for an unnecessary swipe at the Bible.

Elizabeth Doyle once saved an incognito smuggler from certain death. Now she is in desperate need, and only Jonas Ainsworth, Viscount Langton, a man high above her station in life, can save her from a horrible future. As the two conspire to expose a smuggling ring, they are drawn to each other, despite their differences of rank and birth. This charming and adventuresome tale unfolds along the Cornish coast of England and is sure to be a winner for all Poldark fans.

The Noble Smuggler is an historical regency romance by a new to me author. She obviously did her homework and used real people in her fictitious story about a young gal whose father was a part of a famous smuggling ring in England. This was a steady read with a slow burn romance and a happily ever after ending.

This is the story of a viscount named Jonas who decides to masquerade as a smuggler in order to gain information that could help take them down for good. He has personal reasons for doing this. Elizabeth is the daughter of an innkeeper who is part of this smuggling ring. There are secrets regarding her origin that not even she is aware of.

This novel is very well written, if predictable. As is usual with this author, she adds some actual history into the tale. The characters and plot pacing are well done. I enjoyed my time with this story.

I have been wanting this book since I knew it existed, and I was so excited to get a copy of it. Everything about the description attracted me, and I think that's where my main disappointment began. While the description is a scene that takes place, it is so toned down and minimized that it almost plays no part in the story.

I'm going to go ahead and say that this is by no means a bad book. It's just not my cup of tea, and I'm disappointed because I was expecting something very much my cup of tea. Please consider the review to end there, despite the fact that I am going to continue to complain.

The book is about smugglers and smuggling, yet our main characters are the most cookie-cutter angels I've ever seen. Elizabeth is remarkably beautiful, hard-working, polite, kind, can sing and if that's not enough for you, hold on because Jonas is her male equal. Remarkably handsome, hard-working, polite, kind, and even has the telltale small scar on his lip and slightly crooked, once-broken nose to let you know that he got into trouble once, but he still turned out perfect. They are absolutely perfect humans and the most boring characters ever.

The plot is slow (not a bad thing...) and mostly predictable (can be a bad thing...) and builds up to what I would consider a very melodramatic ending. Again, the characters are all so cut and dry. The smugglers are evil. The noble people are good.

And the romance. The part I really came for. It was so minimal! It didn't even have a part in the story! We're just told that he's attracted to her and she's attracted to him, and then the very last scene involves him proposing. I was shocked when he proposed. Not because it was surprising, but because they literally hadn't been around each other enough to even think about it! There was no love between them, apart from some random kiss.

I'm sorry for my rant. I get emotional when I'm disappointed. As I said, I'm sure this isn't a bad book. It just described something that it is not, and I had so much hope for where it could have gone.

This is just the weekend read that I needed. Full of mystery and intrigue, The Noble Smugger takes the reader into both high society England and into the darker side of the smuggling ring off the shores of Kent. I always enjoy Sian Besseys historical stories full of adventure with a dash of romance. This is a dual perspective story of two people who have grown up living very different lives who ultimately become connected by a tragic accident and the perpetrators who still go about unpunished.

I had a lot of fun from start to finish and was even surprised at some of the plot twists I didn’t seem to predict! My only critique would be...more romance! I wanted a little more chemistry between the main two characters and that seemed to be overshadowed by the other main plot line, but that’s just me being picky. A 4/5 star story and one to check out when it’s released on April 1st.

Every book I read by Author Sian Ann Bessey instantly transports me away to another world and in this case, it's the coast of England in 1784. The details in her writing actually make me feel as if I'm there. Authors that can write this way amaze me! It's like all of your senses are opened up just by the descriptions written in this historical novel.

The next spectacular thing to point out, are the characters. You have a brave and spirited daughter of an innkeeper, Elizabeth Doyle, who is not afraid to do the right thing amidst a bad situation. Then there is the handsome and courageous Jonas Ainsworth, the Viscount Langton, who will do everything to find the truth about his father's death and nobly try to stop those breaking the law with the smuggling ring in the area.

The cast of side characters is strong with the addition of Jonas's sister Rosalind, his mother Lady Langton, and the housekeeper Mrs. Beecham. What wonderfully strong women are portrayed in this novel! The book also has the perfect combination of history, action, mystery, intrigue, danger, and astonishment. Sian Ann always has something up her sleeve that seems to blow me away at the end when the mystery and the true villains are revealed.

This novel is one that you do not want to miss reading. I honestly grow to love her writing more and more with each novel of hers that I read. This historical romance mixed with entanglements and never-ending suspense will make for a day of reading with an enjoyable and rewarding conclusion.

I loved reading this book! There is plenty of danger, suspense, and romance. I loved the way I didn’t know what was coming. The ending was a complete surprise to me.

Elizabeth is the main character. The book opens with her mother dying and Elizabeth there as the only person with her as she passes. I felt sad for Elizabeth. Her dad was horrible to her. Things went from bad to worse when he sold her to an abominable man in marriage without even telling her.

Elizabeth had to escape quickly. She went to the only place she knew to go, Langton Manor. A smuggler that she had helped previously, had told her to go there and mention his name, Reynard, if she ever needed help.

Little did she know that Reynard was really Jonas, Viscount Langton. I loved Jonas. He was a nobleman, he wanted to make a positive change and get rid of smuggling. But he also needed to find the truth about what had happened many years ago. He risked his life to find that, and to protect Elizabeth.

This is such a great novel. I loved the way it was written. It was a great escape for me during these turbulent times.

I was sent a copy of The Noble Smuggler as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This was a good read. I've been wanting to read it for a long time and finally had some Amazon points to get it for free! It had more random descriptions and such that weren't needed and so it read a little slow in parts. But it was a good plot and the pages kept turning. It was extremely clean and so my teen daughter will luck out too😊

THE NOBLE SMUGGLER is a story of danger and romance set on the coast of Kent as a gentleman tries to infiltrate a gang of smugglers in order to avenge his father. The characters are instantly likable, the romance sweet, and the danger intense. An overall highly entertaining read!

I really loved these characters from the start! Elizabeth or "Lizzie" is a young woman who has had a tough life and continues to face challenges from the rowdy smugglers and an unscrupulous magistrate, as well as an uncaring father. She is smart and sweet with a bit of a backbone. Jonas was a great character and my favorite of the two. He's a bit headstrong, but courageously so, as well as intelligent and gallant. He slowly puts the pieces together of what happened long ago when his father died as he attempts to bring down the leader of the smugglers. The attraction and chemistry between Lizzie and Jonas are palpable. I also adored Jonas' friend as well as his sister and mother and all the interactions between these characters. The danger in the story ramps up quite a bit towards the climax, which kept me turning pages to the very end.

My one complaint, and it is a bit of a strong one, is that I wanted a lot more development in the romance and in the danger to Lizzie. It was almost insta-love between Lizzie and Jonas. I wanted more time to pass with them being around each other, conversing and getting to know each other, before they just fell in love. This is a bit of a pet peeve for me. Then I also thought it would have been better for Lizzie to have been more guarded, along with the staff, at the beginning and then for them to begin to be lax before things happened. It just would have made more sense to me. It felt too immediate and plotted. Regardless, I still enjoyed this immensely.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a story with a great balance of danger, mystery, family, and romance. The characters were fantastic and the story was intriguing from the first to the last page. Definitely one recommended to fans of the author and sweet historical romance with an edge of danger.

Romance, clean, period; Mystery, intrigue
Elizabeth/Miss Doyle and Jonas/Reynard/Lord Langton's story was well-paced with the intrigue back-story, and Miss Doyle's semi-noble past, and her uncertain future. She was intelligent, kind, and brave in so many ways, and as Reynard, Jonas was seeking to uncover those doing wrong. As the mystery unfolded as Lord Langton/Jonas tries to discover which noble is mastermind behind the smuggling operation, even perhaps with some even weightier past crimes, these two honest, sincere hearts also discover their mutual attraction and affection. Elizabeth's gentle kindness to Lord Langton's mother, who is losing her sight, and her willingness to help assist with the discovery of the criminal as she worries about her safety and future in her determined, kind and sincere manner, only further endear her to Lord Langton, who is tired of the machinations of the ton.
Intriguing backstory with the Smuggling, strong characters and side characters, moments of sweet attraction and longing, a lovely romantic mystery, with a period setting. I am definitely a biased reviewer, as I am a definitely a fan of S.A. Bessey's writing, and loved this one, just as I have loved her other novels. Another one that I will reread to savor certain moments, as she writes suspense and clean romance so well.

Elizabeth Doyle lives with an abusive and aloof father who runs the local inn. He is also involved with the local smugglers, which Elizabeth does not like at all. She has an encounter with an injured handsome smuggler and hides him in the inn until he is able to leave on his own. Little does she know he is a local Viscount who has infiltrated the smuggling ring to find out who killed his father and to try and stop the smuggling. This has a great story with a bit of a surprise toward the end that was fun to read. Great character development and interesting plot.

Brimming with mystery and love, The Noble Smuggler by Sian Ann Bessey does not disappoint. I have come to expect when I pick up a historical novel by this author two things: a very solid story and such great historical details that I immediately finish the book and want to go research the time, places, and non-fictional characters mentioned in the story. The stories are always fascinating and the romance hits the spot. The tales of smuggling and wrecking along with the Prime Minister of this time all captured my history loving interests and I feel educated along with satisfied having read this book.
Jonas may be one of my new favorite characters. I liked so much about the way he was portrayed. He lived by an honor code, was genuine, and had this humor about him that kept me smiling throughout the book. Even when things were looking bleak (like a bullet hole through his arm), Jonas still had a way and wit about him to help put those around him at ease. I like that while he was not perfect, his character was true to the book’s title and endeared me from the first moment. His adoration for his sister and his mother was also delightful and I love how that built his character.
Elizabeth is a strong female and I appreciated how she was able to be daring and brave without hiding how vulnerable she was. She was resilient and a great example of an indomitable woman. While she isn’t fearless, she does not let her fear prevent her acting on what she knows is right. Together the two work to uncover the master behind a nefarious smuggling ring that inadvertently changed the course of both their lives. As they work toward a greater good, the two develop a relationship beyond the surface level so many couples experienced during the time.
The pace of this novel kept me turning page after page, especially towards the end. As I mentioned before, the writing was solid and the story very enjoyable. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to what the author writes next.
