I don’t usually give out ratings with 5 stars, but Jack Mars hits it out of the park regardless of the character or series he is writing. This book #5 is just one of those action-hang on to your seat-type. Sure, there are scenes where you’ll say—that can’t be—-but stick with the atmosphere, the fun, the book-reality that we all want to escape to, to become part of or even be “agent zero “.

In the shadowy world of espionage, secrets lie buried beneath layers of deception, and allegiances shift like quicksand. Jack Mars masterfully unravels this intricate web in his gripping audiobook, “File Zero,” the 5th installment in the “Agent Zero Spy Thriller” series. Narrated by the talented Brian Callanan, this audiobook takes listeners on a heart-pounding journey through covert operations, betrayal, and redemption.

**Plot Summary:
Agent Zero, our enigmatic protagonist, awakens with fragmented memories and a burning desire for answers. Disavowed by the very agency he once served, Zero races against time to uncover the truth behind his memory loss. When an incident in the Strait of Hormuz threatens to escalate into war, Zero's memories flood back, revealing a sinister CIA plot. As he digs deeper, he realizes that saving his targeted family and stopping the agency's machinations will require him to trust no one. The stakes are high, and the fate of the country hangs in the balance.

**The Unforgettable Protagonist:
Agent Zero is no ordinary spy. His vulnerability and determination make him relatable, while his combat skills and resourcefulness elevate him to legendary status. Mars deftly portrays Zero's internal struggle as he grapples with betrayal, loss, and the weight of his past. Brian Callanan's narration breathes life into Zero, capturing his intensity and vulnerability with every word.

**Intricate Plotting:
Mars weaves a complex tapestry of intrigue, shifting alliances, and hidden agendas. The plot unfolds like a high-stakes chess game, with each move revealing a new layer of deception. As Zero races against time, listeners are drawn into a world where loyalties blur, and danger lurks around every corner. Mars's attention to detail and meticulous research add authenticity to the narrative, making it impossible to look away.

**Thrilling Action Sequences:
From heart-pounding shootouts to adrenaline-fueled chases, "File Zero" delivers action in spades. Mars's vivid descriptions plunge listeners into the heart of the action, whether it's a rooftop pursuit in Istanbul or a desperate escape through a war-torn city. Callanan's narration intensifies these scenes, leaving listeners breathless.

**Themes of Betrayal and Redemption:
At its core, "File Zero" explores the human cost of betrayal. Zero's fractured memories mirror the fractured trust he experiences. As he fights to protect his family and expose the truth, redemption becomes his driving force. Mars skillfully balances pulse-pounding action with moments of introspection, creating a multi-dimensional narrative.

**The Audiobook Experience:
Brian Callanan's narration is a revelation. His voice captures the urgency of Zero's mission, infusing each sentence with tension. Whether portraying a hardened operative or a vulnerable man seeking answers, Callanan's performance is pitch-perfect. The pacing keeps listeners on the edge, urging them to unravel the mystery alongside Zero.

**Final Verdict:
"File Zero" is a rollercoaster ride of suspense, espionage, and emotional depth. Jack Mars's writing is sharp, and Brian Callanan's narration elevates the experience. If you're a fan of pulse-pounding thrillers with a flawed yet compelling hero, this audiobook is a must-listen. Prepare to lose sleep as you follow Agent Zero's relentless pursuit of truth and justice. Mars has crafted a masterpiece that will linger in your mind long after the final chapter.

I'm always on the cusp with this series, on the edge of giving up yet always compelled to read the next.

Jack Mars is a good author, the stories are great and the action is on par with other Spy/Thriller/Door kickers. But, I've always felt Reid Lawson is TOO much of a doofus, even for a college professor haha. His inner monologue even as Kent Steele feels like a Scooby-Doo episode. "Wait just a minute, if he's here and you're their that means. Uh ohhhh." It's been a downside, to me, for the whole series. Even as Zero gets more Bad Ass-er, his thought process as both Reid and Kent make me want to yell "NERRRRRD!" Unfortunately, this was all compounded when Brian Callanan took over the narration back in #4. He's a great voice actor but it seems he chose to kick the Doofus level up even more while expressing Reid/Kent's persona. Also, his portrayal of Bixby the R&D tech dude, wow HARDCORE doofus. He's like the stereotypical nerd scientist from The Simpsons with the Geek Lisp and all. It's just a bit much for me, enough where I almost dropped the series. BUT, to Jack Mars defense, this well connected series where each addition falls seamlessly into the next has kept me interested.

Zero #5 has the biggest information bomb drops and unexpected plot twists of the series so far. We left off #4 knowing his full memory returned, thankfully #5 doesn't disappoint and sh#t starts hitting the fan. The political antagonists were "bad" enough that my drive to see them called out was enough to keep reading. Sure, there are a few "okay that's a bit convenient" moments but tolerable. I've always been a bit confused how the Zero saga seemed to drop all at once like a Netflix series, in the past I assumed it was rushed or written as a side project and later released in bulk. #5 while possible the best so far, still leaves me with the same opinion "good but rushed." Needless to say I've already purchased #6 so for now I guess "rushed" will do just fine for me.

This book had so many parallels to what is occurring in the Middle East as of this past week in Jan. 2020.
Everything becomes extremely complicated and the relationships become even more intertwined and you really have no idea who is the "bad" or "good" agent, etc.
It is a spellbinding read...now it is onto the next book in the series Recall Zero.

I read this as an advance reader and asked to leave either a positive or negative review.

3.5 stars (.5 star off for the stupidity, again, of the daughters); plot is becoming repetitive. Might have to take a break before reading book 6.

Agent Zero lands in the middle of conflict again. This time, lost memories return to make him realize why he wanted to forget. As he struggles to be sure who he can trust, he realizes he must save a man who thinks he wishes to kill him. Will this be the mission where his luck fails him? Will his team of friends help him through to the end?
Another fast paced installment to this series, this book continues to encourage the reader not to think too hard about physics and human nature.

This is the five-star rating system I use:

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

If for whatever reason, I go back and reread a good book, I will change the rating to five-star because I read it again.

fast paced, stomach clenching, nonstop action

This is another amazing gut wrenching story.
Never knowing who to trust and still focused on the mission to keep his daughters safe and save the nation.
He has no concern for his health and is often convinced he is going die but doesn’t let that stop him.

Zero has his memory back. Will that help him foil the conspiracy that he was working on when his memory was taken away? Can he keep his daughters safe? Again having to accept help from his friends as well as those he does not totally trust. Twists and turns and people thought dead showing up alive.

Zero is unbelievable

It is true that these books are unputdownable. You can't wait to see what is happening next. All the characters are now old friends. Mars writes an incredible story that grabs you and won"t let you go. Filled with excitement, thrills and action.

Save the President

This round of excitement for Zero is over the top wild! Jumping from rooftops, going off a cliff, and hang gliding with POTUS only covers part of the action. This time Zero is fighting enemies within the US government!

Fun book to read, but sloppy editing. Publisher should be better at that task. Pretty much every chapter has an editing glitch, for example, "truck" is used instead of "trunk" (as in a car trunk). These glitches slow the natural flow of reading when you notice something that's wrong.

Agen Zero continues saving the world.
There were a few gremins whch were annoying such as "scuds" being used by US warships, and confusion between torpedos and tomahawk cruise missiles. But other than these the story flowed and the world was saved. A very quick read.

A couple of unforeseen twists but also the bad guys pulled a Bond villain move and didn't kill him when they could have.

Suspense with a heart

Things get complicated for Agent Zero and his family as his memory comes creeping back, just in time to stop WWIII. A worthy addition to the Zero series.

Okay it’s shorter than book 4 and it’s more intense and packed but now I feel Mars is just catering to the crowd. With a book titled file zero, I’d have expected more secrets of Agent Zero to tumble out of the CIA secret and they didn’t. It was a tad bit disappointing for sure..but I can live with it, I think. In fact I feel book 4 and 5 could have actually been condensed into one and would have been a better book than 4 and 5 as stand alone. I love Agent Steele’s character and I am glad he is safe out, but the details of book 1 and 2, the nifty details and the expanded, slow but crisp pace of the first two books, are missing. I’d still read all upcoming instalments despite everything but still, a little more attention to a more solid plot would be greatly beneficial to Agent Zero.

This would make a great movie!

These books just get better! The stories are so real you just get lost in them! I don’t want to put the books down once I start reading, I just want to read till I’m finished with the book. I’m looking forward to the next book!
