When I came to Earth on a short-term mission, I never expected to fall in love with a human.
The moment her eyes meet mine, I recognize that Elizabeth is my fated one—my Si’an T’kara.
But I can never tell her. If I form the mind link with her to claim her as my fated one, she’ll know the dark secret I carry within me—the horror of my race.
The more time we spend together, the more difficult it is to deny my desire to claim her.
But I cannot help but wonder: Would she fear me if she knew the truth about my people, and why we have come to her world?
***TRILOGY NOW COMPLETE! This is a slow burn romance that follows the same couple over three books. The steam will build with each book in this series.***
USA Today bestselling author, Jessica Grayson writes scifi and fantasy romance with strong heroines and the otherworldly heroes that cannot help but fall in love with them.
She lives with her husband, cat and dog in the San Antonio, TX area. In addition to reading and writing scifi romance, she loves swimming, chai and dark chocolate.
This is one of the most beautiful sci fi romances I’ve ever read. The world building was rich and descriptive, the twists and turns of the alien creatures—didn’t see some of those coming!! But what I loved the most was the development of the love between Elizabeth and marek and the interactions between two alien peoples yearning for another and learning how to communicate and go past the barriers of their separate cultures.
I CANT WAIT to read more from this author. I want to know more about their origins—this twist in the story had my heart thumping—as well as seeing how their love continues to grow.
Im in love with this story. I cannot wait for more of Jessica Grayson. The book captivated me since the first chapter. I love how the characters love evolved without any physical contact yet there love for each other was beyond this universe.
I received a free ARC e-copy of this book from book funnel and read it over the last couple of days. I read a lot of romance of any genre but lately I've been reading a lot of science fiction/alien romance.
I loved this book and can't wait for the next in the series. This author writes well and the world building was really good. The author uses some common myths and legends in the story in an interesting way. This is a little different than a lot of alien romance stories in that it is set on Earth. It sounds like future stories will be set in other locations at least partially but it was interesting to read the story of an alien race coming to earth. There are several interesting secondary characters who I hope to see get their own stories.
The main characters meet when they are working together on a language translation program together. Marek is immediately drawn to Elizabeth but the story is not the insta-love type really. There is a fated aspect to their love story but it is a slow burn between two intelligent individuals.
I highly recommend this book and will be waiting anxiously for the next book to release so I can read it!
This story does NOT have a lot of steamy sex scenes and this one certainly does not need it, but I still see it as a romance. I think any SFR fan would enjoy this one. Marek is a V'loryn who was sent to Earth to help with a language program to make Earth capable of speech with most if not all other beings. Marek's race used to be very violent beings until their scientists found away to remove all of their emotions. Elizabeth has always been excited about learning other languages, so when the World Council need help, she applied. This story is multilayer. There is the figuring out if Terran and V'Loryn's are compatible with the particular way the V'Loryns bond. There's some sort if plot to get rid of the current V'Loryn Ambassador. Then at the very end of the book, there's a murder that needs solving. Ms. Grayson has given a full length story with beautiful world building, interesting plot twists and just enough unanswered questioned to be eagerly awaiting Book 2. I find it amazing that this is a first book for this author. Well done and Congrats to Jessica Grayson!
First contact... The V’Loryns have made first contact with Terra (Earth) and now need to be able to communicate. Language and computer specialist Marek is part of the V’Loryn delegation that is sent to earth to work on a language translation program. Elizabeth Langdon is one of the Terran members of the team. Jessica Grayson has created a very detailed alien race. The V’Loryns have very interesting physical and mental capabilities. They don’t express their emotions at all which result in some very funny misunderstandings between Marek and Elizabeth. There were some very sweet moments and also some parts that made me cry. Lost in the Deep End is a slow burn with low steamy content. It has a satisfying HEA with more books promised in the Author’s afterword. Yeah! I’m looking forward to more Marek and Elizabeth.
I received an ARC of Lost in the Deep End, and could not be more pleased to be one of the first to enjoy this brilliant love story! While sci-fi is unfamiliar territory to me, the romantic development between the lead characters, the endearing introspection, and the intelligent humor wrapped up within them were more than enough to bridge any gaps between the comfortable and the new. There were twists and curves to give added depth aside from the romance, enough that I was uncertain of what the conclusion would be until the couple's happy ending played out before me. And while I cheered for them as they realized their victory, I couldn't help but think that there would have to be more adventures to come for a couple like Elizabeth and Marek. I'll be waiting, Ms. Grayson!
I am always looking for new authors in my paranormal/Sci-fi bookshelf and this author came and got me out of my book limbo in this category. She caught me right from the start, and I could not put it down eager to have more of the perfect love story between the characters. Not insta love for this two, but I liked it because it complemented the general story. The more you read the more you want to know about all the other components of the world being explained and wishing for a serie of this wonderful tale. I started stalking this new author craving for more and I know there are more great books in the future. 5- I want more Marek-stars
I was in a lot of pain today, but I got so sucked into this book that I forgot about it for long periods of time. Better than painkillers! This book was so very well written that I didn't even notice myself crying until I got stuffy, or how much I was smiling until I started laughing. Emotional rollercoaster is an apt description for this book, and the slow-burn romance was freaking well done that I didn't even get impatient for the payoff. Well worth the price and the time spent! Thank you Ms. Grayson for such a fabulous evening! And for anything else you publish....It's a date!
This book was amazing! I cannot say enough how much I loved it! I received an ARC of this on Book Funnel and it by far surpassed my expectations for SFR. Caught my interest from the first line and kept it all the way through. The sexy scenes were perfect and beautiful. The plot twists and world building were amazing. I actually cried during one scene and the HEA blew me away. Such a beautiful story. Cannot wait for more from this author.
This is a brand new author and she did extremely well on her first book she wrote. The characters are well defined, the story is engaging, the writing is done well. I look forward to her next book. I read the book in one day because it kept me interested and engaged. Congratulations Miss Grayson.
A totally engrossing story from start to finish. This book was amazing. The characters were intriguing and the world building was perfect. The story had an easy flow and made this book an intense page turner. Bravo to the Author. I can't wait for the next book!
"Lost In the Deep End" was very well written. I loved the character development and could picture everything in my mind like a movie. A good writer is able to do that for me. I look forward to reading more by this author. Great debut book!
I am conflicted. The first 50% was amazing but then it went a downhill. I just can’t comprehend all the lies and secrets he kept from her. He says she’s his soulmate but he certainly doesn’t act like it. It seems like he thinks of everyone else’s feelings but hers. He’s always putting her last. He says he wants to bond but then no then yes then no again. In the second half of the book it seemed like they didn’t have any conversations at all. Even irrelevant ones. And the fact he was going to go mate someone else? Yeah no. He just really started annoying me in the last 50%. Maybe I’m being too harsh but I had higher expectations. Idk I’m all over the place.

I'm so in an alien-romance books phase and this book is perfect reading. And it was so amazing it keep me reading until 2 am even tough next day I had to get up early to go to work.
I like it a lot. Like, really really liked it.
Slow-burn romance is my jam. It was so fun to read how the relationship between Elizabeth and Marek evolved (especially those scenes involving some kind of Terran slang learning [those were the best!]). I also like that there are more things that now make sense (because I first read the Mosauran series) and I can't wait to keep learning and discovering more of this space & alien adventures that Jessica Grayson created.
This is a breath of fresh air in the SFR world. It is so unique and sucks you right in.
I am excited to see that this will be a multi book series about the rich world and relationship of this couple. I am excited to see what else this author has in store. Insta-preorder author.
I HAVE TO ADMIT THIS WASN'T MY FAVOURITE OF THE SERIES, BUT IT WAS STILL VERY VERY ENJOYABLE. Although I do notice that the author has the same formula/pattern for the way her characters interact, fall for each other and react. My advise is to NOT pick up another book of this author's right after reading one, if not you won't appreciate it's repetitiveness.
MAREK is a V'lroyn. Finally I get to see what a V'loryn looks like because I started THE EDGE OF IT ALL first and preferred that one, but that one features other alien species. Marek is a standard Jessica Grayson male heroine, he's possessive, a little awkward but also sweet and when he loves, it's all encompassing. Marek's a scientist, also a heir to his House, basically a son of royalty. He has been dispatched to join the humans on Earth to help in translating the V'loryn and human language, making it accessible to the masses I suppose, with the help of his human colleague - Elizabeth, who happens to be his lifemate. Marek's torn between duty and love, the story addressing his own insecurities and doubts about a possible V'loryn and human mating, while he succumbs to Elizabeth's charms day by day. He's not the uber alpha kind, because Marek's quite a softie inside, he's definitely not demanding or headstrong to the point where he has to control everything. The part where they discover his ancestor's bonding with a Terran was the highlight of this book for me and Elizabeth's gay bestie - Anton.
ELIZABETH is Liana's niece and her story features the V'loryns. Elizabeth is quite biased when it comes to the V'loryns and I will be honest and say sometimes it can be annoying. Though I'm no fan of instalove, this one had like 30% of it. What do I mean? Well, Elizabeth is pretty much taken by Marek the first time they met and she's all gaga for him after that, often gifting him smiles, openly flirting, taking him to dinners and lunches, they are basically sewn to the hip 24/7. If she wasn't the heroine, I'd find her annoying like the fly you want to swat. I also didn't like how they never truly fought...as a 'couple' that's just weird and not right. She's always so quick to forgive Marek and I hated how when he was forced to leave Seattle on a mission manipulated by his uncle to separate the two, Elizabeth may have been heartbroken but the moment he returns...NO DRAMA. She just forgives him that easily. Gurllll you gotta make your man work for it a little! That peeved me big time.
OVERALL I'm not a fan of this couple and won't be continuing the series. I'm not invested in them as I was with Liana and Soran. But, I do admit it's still enjoyable despite me not liking the heroine much, I much preferred her aunt who was a badass, kickass strong woman. Elizabeth was just a shadow of her aunt, and that's funny cause the author wrote this book first BEFORE Liana's...so I'm guessing that's a good thing?
Elizabeth and Marek are part of a team set to translate their respective languages so that recently signed treaty continues to go smoothly. Marek's people are very subtle and stoic. Between the pointy ears and tightly restrained emotions they really do have a lot in common with Vulcans. But remember that Vulcans and Romulans have a shared history. Romulans embraced their emotions, but Marek's people decided to follow the Vulcan path. Humans are very expressive. Very tactile and exuberant. Between that and the slang communications between the races is a challenge. Misunderstandings happen. A lot.
Spoilers ahead. These aliens are not very alien. They truly are very much like Star Trek characters. TOS, but without the green makeup and rubber suits. The human female, although knowing exactly how controlled they are still takes half of what he says with offense and hurt feelings. Sometimes it fit the dialogue. Sometimes it felt like reading a Victorian romance where the h runs across the moors (in this case beach) in tears for silly reasons. And for a woman who survived drowning in a car, the fear of elevators but ease of swimming (without a backstory of counseling or pushing through her fears) is odd. I'd think the water would be a bigger fear. I liked the explanation of mythologies that the various aliens had in our history. That was a fun tie in. This book of the series is a very "clean romance". I get the feeling that the sequels will probably not be so. As Marek embraces his emotions the books will probably become more explicit. I am interested in where the series is going. There's an evil emperor, a human hate group, a possibly vengeful princess, lonely aliens lacking mate possiblities. But the honoring of vows, stoicism, running off in tears and all really does bring to mind historical romances. An odd twist for an alien romance series but I'll give it a try.
Narrator did a good job. Enjoyed the listen! I was hoping the whole series would be available on Audible, but no luck there. This recording was a good one.
Love the premise for this; aliens and humans are trying to work together, but there are those that are against the aliens and humans making peace; from both sides. The aliens have come to Earth to work with some humans on some scientific things. Human Elizabeth wants to do what she can to foster good will between the humans and the aliens, so she’s working with the aliens to solve some mysteries. Elizabeth and alien Marek grow close, but he’s keeping a lot from her. This story is slow going; a lot of Elizabeth pining for Marek and Marek pining for Elizabeth, but both resisting for their own reasons; mainly the whole he’s an alien thing and keeping secrets. Plus, there’s lots of oddities to these aliens that get in the way; lots of miscommunications. It does get annoying and frustrating how many times these two misunderstand each other, but you know, he’s an alien so it’s to be expected. The aliens are fae/vampire like, and very formal and stuffy. There are those that wish ill will towards the humans; some aliens are very elitist. There’s also a mates scenario, which I love. I do love the connection between Marek and Elizabeth; so cute! Marek did get on my nerves trying to deny his mate, allowing his family and others to dictate what his decisions should be, and all his secrets, but overall, he’s likable. Elizabeth is great; she sticks up for what she believes in and for others. Despite, the slow story, I was rather entertained and enjoyed many elements of the story, so I am very interested to read the next book!
What I liked: I do not like vampire heroes but liked this one. He is much more alien than vampire. I liked all the characters. They were well developed and you could easily relate to all of them. I got invested in them and their drama. Why else would I listen for 12.5 hours?!
What I didn’t like: the slowest burn ever….. they get so close so many times and yet…. Not even a kiss… ugh. And The usual plot points in a romance: The “big misunderstanding” that blows the couple apart for awhile The forced apart due to an obligation somewhere else The obvious things they do that any fool could see through, but the other character thinks it is a platonic gesture. Really!? This happens over and over again. And over and over….. And it is a 12 1/2 hour audio. So longgggggg…..
There is no smut in the book, there is a little “I felt the hard length of him press against my core” kind of things. But only once or twice. And we are not privy to these 2 losing their v-cards. That really sucks!
First, I loved couple and their slow courtship and love story. Prefer more realistic timeline then stories of instant love, marriage and false idea of perfect fairytale love. Humans are imperfect and we have issues.
Second, the author needs to work on timelines of multiple overlapping stories, series. I read most of the other series prior to this one. Confused if this was same timeline as ice planet, others. Not to mention how the V found out about earth. Maybe I missed it but it did not seem clear how they rediscovered Terra. The other is the way the humans are portrayed as weak. So what? Physical and mental are two different strengths. Wish she stops repeating the humans are puny and only physical strength matters. So what if a human is not a ninja or does not want to fight? Some women like to be fighters others not. We still survived and adapted when “weaker physically ” then others.
I dont know if this book is meant to be for ya but seriously I've been reading this book for hours and its so slow its tortoise paced.
Theres no romance really, just two people who stare into each others eyes all the time ffs.
I'm a grown arsed woman I need more than this pg ultra pure book whose plot is frustrated by being dragged out beyond its natural state.
Can you tell im frustrated? I AM! For gods sake give us more! And I've just had a look at the following books,: 1.5 a continuation of this, book 2 at the end finally some sex.
Nope I cant do it. I dont need my reading sanitised and pg rated for me thanks. I also cannot abide authors who drag out stories like this plodding endlessly on n on.
I'm done, too many in my tbr to waste any more time on this puritan 'romance' for prides n children
Well the story is interesting & sweet at times. I mostly enjoyed it, they instantly had a connection but he fought it as long as possible for reasons that affect his household. The part I didn’t like was his constant turmoil it was such a huge part of the book that I simply tired of it quickly especially since I have low tolerance. It was so heavy, just left me feeling horrible most of the time. I just don’t like that he never fought for her, not till the last couple paragraphs. So if don’t mind that then you’ll love this book.
Y'all... I haven't cried during a book in so. LONG! I loved this so much (and there wasn't even any smut, say what??) Brb onto the second book ASAP
– Dual pov – Dual virgin – 28H/25h – Alien/vampire-ish H/human h – No cheating or OM drama/slight OW drama (but safe!) – HFN ending (story continues in next book)
Slow-burn. Space vampires. Tons of angst and world-building. Yep. All that decadent stuff I like. I will admit however, that I was simultaneously glued to this and annoyed by it all at once. When I get to 90% and the characters are still: “Oh, we can’t. We mustn’t!” That’s when I start to do some serious eye-rolling. Just be warned that that’s what you’re getting.
As a ⚠️ the plot does not resolve in this book but continues into the next.
This took a while. I wanted to like this book but it was sometimes so repetitive and slow. It’s very well written but the constant back and forth, secrets, and not telling her everything got a little bit annoying. I can’t believe there’s two more books. I’m going to dive right into book two but if it keeps going at this pace I might not have patience for the third.
