Once in a blue moon I run across an unknown author who wrote a few stories and then vanished from the horizon. I was hoping to find that Anne Madden wrote under some pseudonyms but alas, I couldn't find anything.

Cromwell's Captain was a surprisingly well-written story with a light romance weaved between the pages. It was a historical fiction/non-fiction mix first with a flavor similar to Stella Riley aka Juliet Blyth. The setting took place in 1646 during the English Civil war.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the book was the tiny font. And I mean small.

Captain Piers Denham, a Roundhead with a Royalist upbringing, was left for dead after a brief skirmish. Found by Miss Cathie Gifford, he was taken to her brother's home to recover. Sir James Gifford was away fighting on the Royalist side.

A light, sweet romance blooms between the two of them but he is the enemy. There was a secondary story concerning Lady Mary Gifford awaiting the birth of James and her first child and another one concerning Cathie's older brother John being duped by the attractive villainess of the story. Of course, all this was taking place between military hostilities.

I was happy that Cathie was written as a naive heroine but did not have any TSTL moments. Piers was my type of hero: a sincerely good man. He was in love with Cathie but torn by honor and duty.

Cromwell's Captain is for those of you that enjoy 1) history, 2) a mellow pace and a slow sweet romance with a ten year age gap between the H/h. 4.5 stars

4.2 stars - the reason was because there was another love story in this novel - the brother's and sister-in-law's - which kind of took the main focus away from Cathie and Piers. It was also like taking a dunk into the ice cold water of reality - which I absolutely don't like in my books. I like fluff and sweetness and everything rainbows and hearts and sunshine.

This book had several of my most favourite tropes - a large age difference, a sweet, innocent heroine, her being fascinated with him right from the beginning - her saving him from death and healing and taking care of him while he's wounded. And a charming, roguish hero who takes away your heart right from the first conversation. Now who can resist that?

Cathie was a sweet girl, even if overly innocent, and he was *sigh*

The age difference, his maturity, how he was taken with her right from the beginning, how he found her innocence and her youth charming - I loved it all.

And dear God, the OW was so horribly evil!

She made the plot extremely interesting, I was hanging on to the edge of my seat.

It really was a great read, I will be sure to check out more from the author.
