Atalan Adventures #2

Return to Sender

Rate this book
Losing their jobs to IT!™ is one thing.
Losing grasp of known reality is another.

Trapped in subspace, the Atalanta Empress floats outside regular space-time -- and into the middle of a multidimensional smuggling operation.

It has IT!™’s name written all over it. Seriously, it’s stamped on the boxes.

As captain, Frankie decides to hide from the shenanigans, until the psychic triplets hear from their sister. She’s in trouble, and time -- regular time -- is of the essence.

Revealing their ship to IT!™ becomes their only option for a speedy rescue. This action could cost them their lives, but continuing to hide could mean possibly losing a triplet, and definitely dying of boredom.

If there were rocks and hard places in subspace, the Atalanta Empress would at least have a view.

The second novella in Atalan Adventures features non-automatic automatic doors, phosphenes, and a blatant disregard for emergency savings.

Despite not completing algebra in high school, R.M. Hamrick escaped Georgia Tech with a degree in Biomedical Engineering.

She uses this combination of science and doggedness to inject a dose of plausibility into the zombie-filled Chasing trilogy. She ignores most of that science in the wacky, all-female cast space opera, Atalan Adventures.

She and her tortoise moved to Lakeland FL in 2022, which is home to Publix and a cute boyfriend. There, she gained cats and a balcony on which to write. Corey, the tortoise, is single and likes pacing, stomping, and tomatoes. Hamrick writes full-time with the help of patrons and readers, like you.

Fun, not-too-serious space opera-ish adventures of the crew of the Atalanta Empress.

Stranded in subspace for what seems like months, the crew of the Atalanta Empress encounters drifting shipping containers with blinking red lights stamped “Undeliverable.” The crates are missing deliveries from Instant Transport (AKA “IT”), the company that effectively put the Atalanta Empress out of courier and cargo business. But when an unidentified vessel arrives on the scene, sweeping up the lost packages, Frankie goes against her crew’s wishes to hail it and ask for help to get back into real space. Frankie is worried that the newest crew member, Quaja, whom they’ve all come to like and respect, will be taken into custody for her past criminal activities.

In the meantime, the two triplets, Lorav and Patav, discover their sister, Etav, is in trouble in another star system and needs their help ASAP. The ship itself is infested with fertisrats, a species that can literally eat them out of house and home. A captain’s work is never done.

Return to Sender is the second book in R.M. Hamrick’s Atalan Adventures, and it is as fun and entertaining as the series starter, Rats and Bolts. Readers learn a little bit more about the individual crew members; there’s even a dinner party customized for each of them that highlights their different species. The plot never lets up, there’s never a lull in the action, and the scrapes and situations they encounter are exciting and imaginative. I’ve already gotten book three lined up; I enjoyed this one so much.

I recommend Atalan Adventures: Return to Sender to readers that enjoy a not-too-serious send-up of the space opera genre, strong female characters of various species, and don’t agonize over cliffhanger-y endings.

Hilarious and actually poignant at times. I shared Frankie's frustration with her crew, her crew's frustration with Frankie, Frankie's unchecked self-doubt, and Frankie's jealousy toward Quaja.

Hamrick has continued her space opera by fleshing out the characters living on the Atalan (is space really a home?), giving them extra dimensions and ultimately pulling them closer together even as they're divided.

I'm excited to see where their journey goes from here.

More fun in (sub) space!

The second in the Atalan Adventures series hits all the right notes with its fun ensemble cast of alien outcasts and space rodent problems. There’s a really nice blend of technical sci-fi, zany goings-on, and delivery service misadventures which makes this second instalment in this novelette/novella series even better than the first.

Definitely recommended. I’ll be checking out book three, for sure.

A fast and fun read that carries on the same humor as the first one. Also, my new favorite historic time period is now "pre-cheesburgeric" xD

Great sequel!

I really enjoy Hamrick's writing style and humor. Lot of action, and funny lines. Can't wait for the 3rd one to come out!
