I’m in over my head.

My decision to run from my comfortable upper-class life was an impulsive one, but I’m determined not to regret it. It’s true I have no car, have already been fired from my first job, and can’t cook without starting a fire, but I can do this. Anything is better than the life I was raised to lead as some successful man’s arm candy.

I’m adjusting to my new circumstances living with three roommates in a neighborhood known for being eccentric at best and an insanity filled edible trip any other day. On my own for the first time, I quickly realize there’s a lot I need to learn, so signing up for the adulting club that teaches life skills at college seems like the perfect solution.

That is, until I walk into the first meeting and come face to face with my gorgeous economics professor. Forget learning how to change a tire or file my taxes.
There are much more adult things I want this man to teach me.

Each book in this series can be read as a standalone novel.

Forbidden Romance | Romantic Comedy

Unsupervised by S.M. Shade is the first book in her brand-new romantic comedy series, Slumming It! If you’ve read the Violent Circle series (I highly recommend it if you haven’t) then you may recognize the setting and a few of the characters. Ladies and gents, these books (this one included) are HILARIOUS. S.M. Shade comes up with some laugh out loud lines so make sure you’re not drinking or eating when reading it! I laughed my butt off!

Now, while this is a romantic comedy it’s also a forbidden, student/teacher romance. Normally these types of books fall in an angsty category but not this one. It’s just fun! Kelly is a 19-year-old college student who has left her privileged lifestyle for one better suited to her needs. She doesn’t want or need the ex-fiancé her parents arranged for her, nor does she need the constant nit picking from her parents. So, she drops that lifestyle and moves in with a few roommates at Violent Circle. When she starts college, she meets a man who is clearly all wrong for her. Or is he? He’s a teacher after all. What happens with these two will light your fire and make you laugh uncontrollably!

If you’re looking for a romantic comedy look no further. You’re going to want to give this book a try because it’s too good to miss out on! Again, I also recommend the entire Violent Circle series (each book can stand alone) and Worth It in which she co-wrote with CM Owns (funnies book I’ve EVER read).

Fun Read!

I liked it. Had the classic SM Shade formula, I liked how the teacher student relationship wasn’t the highlight of the story but rather it was about them just being together in general, and their age difference. His grandma was adorable and I liked Kelly.

But where is my damn epilogue?? I wanted one, I would love to have seen them living together in the future or something. I am going to assume they will be mentioned in future books.

I love the girls!!! Their friendship is freaking fantastic, it’s a wholesome, loving, comedic relationship. And I like the MC making sure they got along with each other’s friends!!

Five stars and 10 laughing/crying 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I was not prepared for just how funny this book would be! I read the Violent Circle series and cried tears of laughter but Unsupervised had me crying, snorting and may or may not have peed a little. This book was so much more than a taboo Professor/student story that I honestly forgot about the taboo aspect and just focused on the hilarity. It took me longer to read this book than I should have, simply because there were so many times that I just had to go back and re-read what I had read because I just NEEDED to read it again to make sure it said what it did and it was as funny as I thought, spoiler alert....it was just as funny. This book has everything from "angry sinks" to tampon stealing dogs and I can't wait to read it again.

3 EASY STARS

19 year old college student Kelly is learning to live on her own two feet after leaving the horrible control of her parents and their expectations, taking classes to succeed in adulting what she doesn't expect is the attraction and connection she feels for her Econ Professor, 28 year old Layton.

I liked how sweet Layton was when it came to Kelly, but could have done without him freaking out. Kelly is a I liked the fact that Kelly didn't jump on him when Layton started messaging her once he realised what an idiot he had been.

Violent Circle sounds like a fab place thanks to the people who live there.

Overall a light and fun read. Only issue is that this book seriously needed an epilogue - I wanted to see where the two were a few years later or even a decade!

Kelly's gotten away from her rich, controlling parents. She's living in a weird neighborhood, called the Violent Circle, with some awesome roommates, and she's taking classes at the local college. She's unsure what she wants to do with her life, and she's even taking an Adulting class. Yep. And then she falls into a thing with her Econ professor, who may end up teaching her more than just some Econ theory...

I seriously was not expecting how freaking funny this would be! So be forewarned that if you are planning on drinking while reading, you may want to not, otherwise you may end up spitting out your drink onto someone 🤣🤣🤣. Kelly and her new roommies/friends, Layton and his friends have typical and hilarious college experiences, but they just made the story all the more fun and were the best part of the story. But that's not to say that Kelly and Layton's relationship is not interesting, because it is actually - it's sweet and slow burn, and this couple is adorable together. All in all, this is a hilarious, sweet rom-com that absolutely should not be missed.

Warning - you will absolutely laugh out loud REPEATEDLY during this book! I’m a little scared of Shade’s mind, some of the things she comes up with are crazy, but they make for wonderful stories.

Kelly and Layton are college student and professor, and neither are necessarily happy in their roles. Kelly is reclaiming her life, she’s always been expected to look pretty and not think, now she wants to make something of herself and stand on her own two feet. Her hilarious roommates appear to be Slumming It’s answer to Frat Hell, and they are wonderful!

Helping Kelly through horrible dates, parties that have mud wrestling (yup not kidding), daddy issues, and several other first experiences, these girls are #squadgoals

Just one important thing, by the end of this book, you will NEVER EVER EVER look at a Capri Sun in the same way again! I had water come out of my nose Shade!

Unsupervised was an amusing story that will have you laughing from the first chapter. This novel included romantic comedy and also student/teacher forbidden trope into one awesome story. The main characters Kelly and Layton had an instant attraction but their story was a sweet slow burn and you will love these two together. The story included a cast of secondary characters mainly the couple's friends who greatly added to the story and made it that much more hilarious. This novel was fun, sweet, steamy and charming and you will be unable to put it down. It was an entertaining read and I would recommend it to all lovers of romcom.

I kind of felt this was rushed and not edited properly. Or like I read a plot summary and not a book. I hope this makes sense… I like me some taboo teacher/student romances but this was not executed too well, or maybe as well as other books of this author.

Just my opinion, but I found it really difficult to connect to both lead characters, especially Kelly. I found her and her friends (and even Layton) to be very immature. S.M. Shade is a terrific writer! I just feel this book came off as immature.

After loving the Violent Circle series, I was so excited when this author announced a spin off series! Unsupervised is the first book in that series and it didn't disappoint at all. It felt so good to be back in this setting. This romantic comedy had me laughing out loud and swooning for this book boyfriend and I loved every minute of it!

You don't have to read the previous series, but I definitely recommend it. We get glimpses of characters we've already met and the neighborhood is just as crazy as it was before. Kelly's roommates are hilarious and I loved that they were there for her finding her own way in this new life she's building for herself.

I'm normally not a fan of forbidden romances, but this one isn't full of angst at all. Layton and Kelly are such fun characters and I loved them together. Kelly is so much fun. She's exploring what she wants, but also let's herself relax a bit. Layton is a teacher, but he's not sure it's for him yet. And a man who learns songs on a piano to make his grandmother happy, definitely scores points in my book.

All in all, another great romantic comedy by this author. She knows how to put everything I need in books like this. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!

5 Stars!

I was new to S.M. Shade late last year // earlier this year and dang if she didn't pull me back in for this latest release (killer blurb and that cover is everything!). I looooved her most recent Tragic Duet (that series had my heart bleeding!) and I was super excited to dive into something fresh, fun and new from her.

Unsupervised was sooooo dang good y'all... fun, easy, sweet, charming, steamy, filled with quite a few spit out your drink - laugh out loud moments, and quite honestly this WHOLE cast of characters was amazing, unforgettable, and kept me on my toes starting from page one. But Kelly and Layton *heart eyes* they gave me allllllll feels, just wait until you meet them.

Even though I'm used to a much grittier, angstier, deeper storyline when it comes to the student - teacher romance trope (a fave of mine, by the way!), this was a pleasant, unputdownable, devoured in one sitting surprise and not what in the ways I was expecting but sooooo much better.

This is the first in the Slumming It series, a spin off from her Violent Circle series, and a definite standalone that you should read and take a chance on.

I highly recommend this one y'all.

Didn't Realize It Would be Funny!

I was pleasantly surprised while reading this book. It's my first by this author and I was really glad I got this book and the next book on KU at the same time.

It's a college age book, although the H is 28 while the h turns 20 in the book. It's also a professor/student romance although it's not as bad as that sounds. The h has no idea what she wants to do with her life while the H only knows that he doesn't want to be a teacher. They have an immediate connection but the professor is trying his best not to mess up and date a student.

I enjoyed most of the characters a lot and how bonded the friends all became. I especially enjoyed how many times I laughed out loud. It's not necessarily a comedy-but there was a lot of humor at times-always a plus in a book I'm reading.

I would recommend this to adult contemporary or romantic comedy readers. Fun read!

Unsupervised by S. M. Shade is book 1 in the rom-com series Slumming It (a spin-off to the Violent Circle series)

I loved it S. M. Shade is so hilariously clever with her wit and one liners. She pulls off comedy as equally as she tugs on your heart strings. Layton is super sweet and just a touch dirty, what better combination and Kelly is innocent but independent and is not afraid to go after what she wants. In typical S. M. fashion, all the side characters are a loveable misfit bunch but complement the story and main characters.

This definitely filled the void after finishing the Violent Circle series.

Spoken In: Dual Perspectives - Layton/Kelly
Rating: 5 Stars ⭐️

Unsupervised is a standalone romantic comedy in S.M. Shades brand new series Slumming It . This is a spinoff to her Violent Circle series. You don't have to read that series to read this one but I would highly recommend it because we get to see a few familar faces AND because it is hilarious!

I loved being back in the Violent Circle neighbourhood! It was exactly the thing I needed at this moment a bit of laughter in my life and I'll tell you I laughed a lot through out this book! Kelly and Layton were everything!

The teacher/ student trope is one of my favourites and this was such a spin on a normally angsty read it was filled with fun, sarcasm and witty banter and a bunch of crazy neighbours that will have you laughing all the way through.

I cant wait to get my hands on more from this group of friends!

*WARNING* story contains explicit adult content
I don't know how S.M. Shade comes up with such outrageous characters, but I am certainly glad for however you done! I enjoyed this story a lot with its rom-comy feel and its hilarity. The story does have meaning, but delivered it a light and easy going manor. This is all about a young woman getting out from under her overbearing and manipulative patents and becoming her own adult. Great book. Well written. I can't wait for book 2.

The heroine of the book, Kelly had finally broken away from her controlling parents and started a life of her own where no one can nor needs to tell her what to do and what her future should look like.
Layton is an Economics Teacher at the college Kelly started studying at. He’s exploring job options and he gave teaching a try.
I loved how hard Kelly was doing her best to prove everyone wrong and to show them that she can be strong and independent in the new world she stepped in. I also really liked the bond between her and her roommates/girlfriends. They were all so funny and the jokes cracked me up every time.
Kelly and Layton’s relationship was so sweet and cute i swooned. Layton was always so caring and funny with her i just couldn’t not like him. The plot though i didn’t really enjoy as much because it was kinda cliche and boring but overall the story was pretty good.
I’m a newbie to Shade’s books (i only read the tragic duet which i absolutely loved) but i found myself really liking her romcom style and i’ll for sure give a try to her other books.

I can’t wait to see what this series will bring!!

Trope: forbidden romance student/teacher
Romantic comedy

I went in thinking this book was going to be great based on the number of stars it had and was greatly disappointed. I love me a forbidden romance but this one was just blah. The book was just very juvenile.

Kelly, an inexperienced almost 20 year old breaks away from her controlling parents to live her life like she chooses. She enrolls in college and adulting classes and immediately lusts after her teacher. Layton, a 28 year old teacher who really doesn't love teaching but decided to stick it out a semester volunteers to teach an adulting class. Him and Kelly have an insta-attraction and get together quite quickly. There's nothing really forbidden about this romance. Oh and she's a virgin of course 🙄. Layton freaks out when he finds out she's a virgin, they break up, get back together after a bit and he pops her cherry. The end

Get ready the crew from Violent Circle are back and Kelly is the next addition. Kelly is frat boy Trey's younger sister. She is breaking away from her overbearing parents and will try to make it on her own. When your dad tries to arrange your marriage ..you may be better off to your own Unsupervised Devices!
Layton is a man struggling to figure out his true career path. He has taken a job as an adjunct professor of economics but is it truly his calling? He is such a caring, compassionate man that just needs a sign.
A taboo attraction to your professor, a crazy cast of characters, a girl trying to find her way in the world! Get ready for Kelly's try at trail blazing through life on her own devices ! Is she the sign that Layton needed all along?
Sweet, Funny, emotional and romantic !!

I love SM Shade, I did not love this.

Vibrant characters. Antics that, yes nearly teeter into too much. It's cute and fun. But I just can't stand the cliché virgin plot. Girl is a virgin, tells boy, boy freaks out. They "break up", feel their feelings, get back together. Have sex, book ends. Kelly and Layton should have been better than that. It was such an unexpected letdown.

I read the second one first by accident, it was so much better. So. Much. Better.

This is not a spoiler. This is more of “what you may not want to do while reading Unsupervised”
-eat
-drink
-read in crowded public places (unless you don’t mind attention)
THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD

Where to begin...
Starters - This is the first S.M. Sade book I’ve ever read. I do not regret that Unsupervised was my introductory novel to S.M.’s world. I regret that I’ve had some of her other novels in my TBR pile, and they have languished there. That was my error.

Unsupervised is the first in a new spin off series from S.M.’s Violent Circle books. You do not have to have read the Violent Circle books in order to read or enjoy Unsupervised. As I mentioned, this was my first novel by this author. I enjoyed it and didn’t feel I needed to know any further back stories to enjoy it. There are one or two references to the “Frat Hell” boys, and our female lead in Unsupervised is the younger sister of one of the Violent Circle guys, but those are peripheral items.

At its core, this book is a forbidden romance wrapped around two coming of age stories.
The forbidden part is that Kelly, our lead female, is a student and our male lead, Layton, is a professor at Kelly’s college.
I have to say, the professor/student trope is one of my favorites. S.M. handles this relationship beautifully as well as a little differently than I’ve seen before.
At varying points of the book, one or the other leads holds the “position of power” in the relationship. Very well done! These changes and hand offs flowed seamlessly and weren’t forced.
The coming of age bit is shared in a way with both our leads. For Kelly it is a very literal coming of age. She leaves her controlling parents and their cash heavy lifestyle, breaks an arranged engagement, strikes out on her own and starts figuring out her life.
Kelly is supported with a crazy and wonderful set of ladies whom she rooms with. These gals personify #squadgoals. They made me wish I was still 20 something and could live with my besties. S.M. also manages to drop nuggets of wisdom within feminist rants and witty snarky banter. Again - total respect!
Layton’s coming of age is a little bit less in your face. Throughout the book we pick up tidbits of Layton’s past life, his deepening displeasure with his current career path, and what he’d like to do “when he grows up”. His coming of age quietly unfolds in the background of the story. A subplot that is gently handled.
Kelly and Layton are backed by cameos of Violent Circle residents, Layton’s best friends, Kelly’s roomies, and a very intriguing trio of college guys that Kelly and her roomies befriend.
I’ll be on the lookout for Dalton’s story (Layton’s friend) and Owen’s story (Class Clown College guy..and I think my book boyfriend from this novel🤣)

I mentioned funny. I did not lie.
S.M. provides us with multiple scenes that include (but are not limited to)
-outspoken retirement home residents
-what I will term “Misadventures in Adulting Club”
-a robotic vacuum....that swears 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣
-people hiding in bushes, half naked, after a drunken bout of B&E resulting in a midnight swim, thus leading to cop avoidance
-utilizing Capri Sun juice pouches in a very adult analogy
-mud wrestling gone wrong
And....
-what not to do with a baby swing.

Needless to say, after reading Unsupervised I will no longer be able to be near Capri Suns and be able to behave in an adult manner. Given that I have two kids and multiple nieces/nephews...this will pose an uncomfortable, however, unavoidable situation.

Additionally, I swear that S.M. contacted my own college friend squad because the baby swing scene has occurred. I was there, I saw it, I was useless..but in our situation...911 was not needed.

Finally, Dalton’s experiences during the camping trip will forever make me second guess camping with my friends. Ever again.

S.M. Shade, your book was an absolute fun and throughly entertaining read. I’ll be digging into my TBR pile to get to the Frat Hell boys. PLEASE write Owen and Dalton’s stories??? I think those guys will be epically wonderful.

Hilarious! A rollicking great story with lots of belly laughs and some heartfelt moments. I had a great time reading this story that went by so fast. I wanted my HEA but I also wanted more fun moments with Kelly and Layton!

Kelly and her brother Trey broke out from their overbearing, snobbish and demanding parents. Trey went out first, made a good life for himself, has a girlfriend and baby. Then he encouraged Kelly to do the same and paid for her tuition in college. So from a life of privilege, Kelly went on to being on her own, in an apartment with three other roommates, located in a government housing complex. At nineteen years of age, she’s now beginning to find out what it is to be an independent adult and she’s finding it confusing, daunting, and like she’s wandering aimlessly, not knowing what she wants to do.

She starts on college classes, trying to find out what she likes, what she’s good for. She finds some adulting classes and signs in, to learn how to function better. I loved this story because it was about the growing up of a young woman, finding herself. She had grown up very sheltered, living a life of limited freedom, and now she’s stretching out her wings and finding her way.

She meets Layton in her economics class but he’s not a fellow student, he’s the professor. Later on, when she assists to her first adulting class she finds he’s the professor there too. He certainly doesn’t look like an Economics professor!

“They are absolutely not supposed to be that young, move with that kind of grace, or have a smile that makes me want to jump on the desk and throw my panties at him.”

Layton feels attracted to Kelly but it’s an impossible situation given she’s his student. There’s also the difference in age since he’s twenty-eight to her nineteen. Even so, the heart wants and when he appears to piano lessons at the place where Kelly’s working at, it all seems like systems go. They enjoy the same things, he loves the person that she is, and she’s very kind to his grandmother who lives in a home. They are a great match, except for the student/professor obstacle.

The story develops at a great clip with some hysterically funny moments (and a funny icky one!). This author has a lighthearted writing style that I loved. At the same time that Kelly seems clueless, we also find that she’s very introspective and inquiring, and she never stops in her quest to find what she wants and who she wants to be. She stumbles around a little bit but little by little she gets it. She also has the help of her roommates, who are supportive, encouraging and educative. Good times are had by all and I ended up enchanted with this funny and feel good love story.
