PRINCESS AT HEART's core message of family, friendship and finding yourself is bogged down by contrived plot and awkward writing, but despite being weaker than its predecessors, this is a fun fourth book in THE ROSEWOOD CHRONICLES that will satisfy fans.

This is a difficult review to write. Possible I self-hyped this too much, but I think it’s more likely that this book doesn’t carry the same level of strength as the previous ones in the series.

PRINCESS AT HEART follows on the heels of the last ROSEWOOD CHRONICLES book. Lottie, Ellie and Jamie have returned to Rosewood Hall for their next school year, but things look bleak. A known Leviathan member works at their school. Secrets are spilt. Friendships threaten to break. All the trio know is they’ll never be the same again.

Right from the offset I could tell this was going to be weaker than its recent predecessors. All the books so far have an inciting incident, something that pushes the protagonists into action. UNDERCOVER PRINCESS had the princess-Portman arrangement, PRINCESS IN PRACTICE the poisoned students, THE LOST PRINCESS the group’s visit to Japanese summer school. Here… there isn’t one. We already know Leviathan are at Rosewood, but by some law of convenience no one decides to actually do anything about it. Not inform Ellie’s parents nor the police nor school security.

A finicky world-building woe to start: it’s revealed that, when Partizans turn twenty, and then every five years after that, they are allowed to go on a sabbatical, a break, and travel wherever they please. But… why? Isn’t the whole point of a Partizan to protect their masters? How can they do that when they’re halfway around the world? Do they have… temporary Partizans? Holiday substitutes? It doesn’t really make much sense and defeats the entire point of a Partizan.

Partizans themselves get only a little spotlight shone on them here, but actually I think it would’ve been great to dive into this elusive Partizan Council. How they’re run, how they’re operated, especially now that we know that Partizans can just pop off every five years and abandon their masters. Who makes these rules?

My largest criticism, however, is definitely this book’s plot. Besides having a shy beginning, so much of the story seemed contrived for the sake of it. Characters seem to have immediate instincts as to everyone else’s thoughts. For instance, Ellie and Jamie make a secret pact regarding Lottie’s involvement. Next chapter, Lottie thinks this:

“… [Ellie and Jamie’s] eyes were firmly focused on the door, as if even looking at her might break some unspoken rule she wasn’t aware of.”

Like… come on. That’s a little too on the nose to be a quirky, ironic simile.

There’s also a pervading mystery regarding a Wolfson ancestor that isn’t addressed whatsoever until the very end. Why? Surely if a Leviathan member was parroting a Wolfson name around, you’d want to research into them to find out why?

There are a few instances, as well, where characters very conveniently drop Important Information so the protagonists can progress. One point, Lottie flounders about what to do next regarding the Leviathan member at the school, and Jamie just happens to mention a MacGuffin belonging to said Leviathan member that could reveal all! Wow! Honestly, I wouldn’t even be mad if it was done organically, but it wasn’t. Jamie randomly mentions it with no previous context, so it felt very deliberately engineered to move the plot along.

The book’s ending is what disappointed me the most. There’s no grand clash between Lottie and Leviathan, between Lottie and Claude or literally any member, as this book promises. There’s a brilliant twist at the end marred by its lack of build-up.

And whilst I think Lottie and Jamie had decent character growth, with a good amount of build-up, Ellie’s didn’t take off for me. Her arc of burdening blame continues from THE LOST PRINCESS, so it had to do something differently for me to believe it – otherwise everything she learnt in LOST was pointless – but she recycles much of the same thoughts. There’s so much for Ellie to explore. The relationship with her parents! Her eventual burden as queen! The knowledge of Claude as Leviathan leader! The book doesn’t weave many of these elements in to make Ellie a fuller, rounder character, and when it does it only scratches the surface. The book’s climactic twist would’ve been much more powerful had Ellie attempted to fit into her role as princess better.

The supporting cast, meanwhile, don’t really seem necessary anymore. Lola, Micky, Raphael, Percy… even Anastacia and Saskia could be taken out and the plot would remain mostly intact. One of the end-chapter cliffhangers involves the twins and just… why should we care? Their importance since PRACTICE has greatly diminished, and they’re now about as significant as a mantelpiece ornament. Pretty, but no substance. Luckily Binah gets a pinch of character development herself, so things look bright for her, but #5 really is going to have its work cut out to convince me any of the others are worth remembering.

There’s this rather cringe-worthy scene where Lottie is confronted in an alleyway by three thugs then is rescued by her friends. Cringe-worthy because it seemed like a blatant, self-indulgent attempt to make Lottie and co. look so cool, epic, amazing, we go to the elusive Rosewood Hall and I can beat you up without blinking and my daddy is powerful and rich! Was there not any other way Lottie could realise that she always had friends to back her up?

Another sore spot with this book is the writing. I won’t go into it as much as I could, given that this is an ARC version and because most of the issues from the previous books carry over, but Glynn’s tendency to overwrite and undersell follows through here.

Scenes feel too slow in places where they need to speed up, and too rushed in places where they need to slow. There are so many emotional moments that should hit you in the gut, shock you, make you immediately worry, but the writing never stops to absorb and process those feelings. I can think of at least one, probably the biggest reveal in this book, that isn’t afforded the time and attention it deserves by the prose. On the flipside, characters rarely speak to each other without Lottie’s thoughts injected between. Most of the time, we don’t need to know her thoughts; we can parse it from how she responds or her body language. There are other parts of the writing that I think – hope – will be polished in the final version, that deal mostly with structure, filtering, and contradictions within the same sentence.

In my opinion, however, the only way for Glynn to improve now is to keep reading and keep writing, writing, writing. Prose woes like the ones I had with HEART can only really be drained from writing with more practice. I think her next series, after ROSEWOOD, will be structurally stronger.

Some things I liked: as always, the aesthetic of Rosewood was cool. I liked how the school project tied it into Lottie’s development (it didn’t, however, work as a plot point. No one cares about a school project when there’s an evil organisation out for your head). The Leviathan POVs weren’t always necessary but I did appreciate the insight they gave us into its members. I also really liked Haru – he’s probably one of the better-written characters in this series.

I’ve given this one three stars, but I’m honestly between three and two right now.

WILL I READ ON? Of course. We're in the endgame now...

5th DECEMBER 2020: Below is the theory I posited prior to reading PRINCESS AT HEART. I'm keeping it up because it's fun to speculate!

Coming fresh off my Rosewood reread, here’s my theory as to PRINCESS AT HEART (with receipts!). Spoilers for the first three books. Obviously.

In both PRINCESS IN PRACTICE and THE LOST PRINCESS, Leviathan are obsessed with Jamie. They're desperate to recruit him over to their side. Why? My theory is: he's actually the Master of Leviathan's long lost son. The Master of Leviathan found out that Jamie's mother died and that the Maravish royal family turned Jamie into their daughter's Partizan, and furious that his son's life was doomed to servitude, he is now hellbent on ruining Maradova's reputation.

“I lost a child once.” [The Master of Leviathan] spoke brusquely, not masking his anger. “That little baby had his whole life ripped away from him.” […] “So I became a father to the world. I want to make sure the children of today have a future. One that they choose, not one chosen for them.”
- THE LOST PRINCESS, Chapter 17

He literally says this to Jamie, and references Partizans multiple times.

I'd argue that knowing that the Master of Leviathan is Claude Wolfson, brother of the current king Alexander and Ellie's uncle, makes it even more possible. How else would Jamie’s mother be allowed to come parading into the palace, pregnant, begging King Alexander and Queen Matilde for help? Did she want to escape from Claude? It's because of her relation to Claude that she was allowed to leave Jamie to the Maradovan royal family.

How about the phrase Alexander parrots to Lottie in PRINCESS IN PRACTICE? Odin pravila volk haka olen pak ranit, ‘one bad wolf can hurt the whole pack’. It literally has Jamie’s surname, Volk, the Maravish (and Slavic) translation for wolf, here. (Granted, I know the Maravish royal family could’ve deliberately given him wolf as a surname to match them, but this phrase and henceforth volk represents Claude and the royal bloodline. That cannot be coincidence.)

The biggest hint, however, is this small exchange in THE LOST PRINCESS:

It had been weeks since [Lottie]’d followed the big black cat into this forest, and she still had faded marks from the worst of her insect bites. This time nothing bit her, nor Sayuri, though it looked as if Ellie and Jamie were not being offered the same courtesy.
“It’s your royal blood,” Lottie whispered to Ellie with a giggle when she tried to bat away a mosquito.
“Then what’s Jamie’s problem?”
With a grunt, Jamie marched forward to the front of their troop, swatting in front of his face irritably.
- Chapter 31

I mean, come on! If this isn’t foreshadowing I’ll eat my hat!

There is obviously more to the story than can be picked apart from the currently released books. The Maradovan sovereigns have been accused of lying (plus Alexander was confirmed, after all, to have had a lover in Japan prior to marrying Mathilde), so they probably know who Jamie really is, and maybe his mother didn’t drop him off at the king and queen’s doorstep at all? Maybe they stole him from Claude and his mother?

Do I think Jamie will join Leviathan? Yes I do, but I also don’t believe he’ll live and die as an antagonist. He’ll go to Leviathan to find himself and possibly explore his relationship with his father, but then he’ll eventually defect back to Lottie and Ellie’s side. Do I think Jamie will challenge Ellie for the throne? No, I don’t, but I could be surprised.

As far as Claude’s ulterior motivations go, Ingrid mentions a person named Alexis during her ravings in the climax of THE LOST PRINCESS.

“I want that letter [describing Alexander’s lover] gone, so we can move on to a better plan. […] You know, the plan where we dispose of those lying parents of yours. […] Once they’re gone, […] [the Master of Leviathan]’ll be welcomed with the respect he deserves. Just like Alexis."
- Chapter 36

Lottie recognises the name but can’t place it. Alexis is, in fact, the first Wolfson, as noted in PRINCESS IN PRACTICE.

“[Ellie's] family tree spans back over six hundred years. […] Generations of Wolfsons, stretching all the way back to Alexis Wolfson, who seized the throne from Roanov rule.”
- Lottie, acting as Ellie’s Portman, Chapter 18

We don’t know exactly how Alexis became the first Wolfson king, nor how it ties back to Claude, but I suspect it will be addressed in this book.

(Why I'm so invested in this series that I've gone so far as to analyse the foreshadowing, I don't know.)

ALSO, I want to add, I’ve since discovered that Glynn deliberately enjoys writing love chevrons. My prediction for ship endgame with Lottie is either Lollie will prevail big time (as this seems to be the favoured ship in the books), or, and this is a very big or, Lottie will be in a relationship with both Ellie and Jamie. They will share her in a polyamorous relationship.

But that's just a theory. A BOOK THEORY.

Such a good book!! I finally finished it lol! But a good book, this book is so good because of its characters! Like sometimes I don’t like the book because of the characters, but this one is the totally opposite!

Princess at Heart is the fourth instalment to the Rosewood Chronicles, following on from The Lost Princess as Lottie, Ellie and Jamie return for another year at Rosewood – still reeling from the discovery that someone close to home is the leader of the Leviathan, the group which is determined to take the princess down…

I can definitely say that ‘Princess at Heart’ is the best book in the Rosewood Chronicles so far and exceeded my expectations.

One thing that really stuck out to me was the character development, although we have known these characters from book one I really found that their personalities really shined through as we got to learn so much more about them. Which was complimented by the gripping plot, I found I struggled to put the book down as I kept wanted to know what was going to happen next especially with the plot really delving in to the past of one of the characters that we’ve all been waiting to read more about.

The complexity of the plot was compelling as you were able to work out the clues alongside the characters, I really enjoyed this element as I find often with stories you’re able to work out what’s happening way before the characters do but I didn’t find this with the story. Furthermore, there is more darkness to this book as it delves much more into relationships and feelings, allowing you to connect more with the characters and see how they have grown throughout the series. I think the books grow with the reader in a way, as they become more mature with each release. (I am really looking forward to the final one, at the same time it’ll be sad to see it end).

One thing I also wanted to mention was that each part of the story began with a painting, I chose to search up that painting before each chapter and I recommend you do too. It helps set the tone for the part and also introduces you to some really lovely works of art which I think is a lovely touch.

The book ends rather abruptly making you desperate for more as it leads on to the final instalment of the series which is exciting! I’ve been reading these books since I was about 14 so it’ll be bittersweet to see them end but I’m excited to see what Connie may have up her sleeves for the future!

I also just wanted to mention the beautiful tribute to Qinni at the end of the book, her work was so beautiful and so fit for the series and as Connie writes so wonderfully ‘I hope we can all strive in her name to bring a little magic into the world’.

Wow. This is the first book I’ve read since if finished Wheel of Time and it was such a fun book. It got me out of my reading slump.

Connie did an amazing job with this book. it was so nice going back to Rosewood and seeing these characters again.

SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!

Jamie's dad shocked me. I didn't expect that.

Poor Lottie. I feel so sorry for her. She lost her two best friends.

"I am the read Princess of Maradova." i kinda resent Ellie after what she did to Lottie but that was a pretty good announcement.

I can't wait for the last book.

A potem znowu gada o Lottie. Zdecydujecie się no.

3.75 / 5 ⭐

I thought this book was amazing. It was full of plot *4.5⭐️* twists and incredible literature. I loved the whole plot of the story as well. I gave one star for the plot twists as well as the excitement. One star for the literature. One star for the detail there was so much detail in every line and I wouldn’t change a thing about that. And finally I have one star for the whole plot as it was so mesmerising you just wanted to keep on reading and turning the pages which I absolutely love when I get a book like that. The last half a star I didn’t give as I was a bit disappointed in the ending as it just left out loads of important details and a few of the strings were left untied but I am excited as this is a series and I think there will be another book after this one fingers crossed .

'I hope with this painting that I can encourage people to not only strive to bring out the best in each other, but to explore how others can change them, and how we can all grow into better people for us having known them.'

I... I am not OK...

Let's start with the good stuff first.

It's not really relevant, but Princess at Heart is the first British publication I, from mainland Europe, have bought since Brexit has become a fact. And all went well, don't worry about it! No problems at all with customs or anything, it went just as quickly as usual.

Also, the dedication mentions Covid-19. This is the first mention I've seen of it in a book - wonder how many more will follow...

Something that struck me as well: This book is set around 2018-2019, apparently, and someone in this book is given a birth date in 2000. That... makes me feel old. It's one of those moments where you realise that time keeps on slippin' into the future, even in The Marvellous World of Books.

The cover didn't really speak to me as the other ones did, the first time I saw it online. However, sometimes it just doesn't come across as it does in print. When I held the book in my hands, I was awestruck, because the colours are truly beautiful. Well done!

The book starts off with a prologue from Ollie's point of view. Since I've always thought Ollie to be a bit of a superfluous character in the story, that didn't bode too well for me. However, he hardly is hardly present at all in the book. So: big 'oof'.

If I'm right, Book 5 - the next book - will be the last one in the series. And this book does feel like one in which the story is slowly but surely going towards the endgame. What that endgame will be like... Search me. I really haven't got a clue. Book 4 is also 'only' 320 pages long, but it's chock-full of... well, everything, really. Mysteries, excitement, emotions (I'll be getting to that in a bit), it's all in there.

Lottie and Ellie are two amazing characters, and I love them very much (despite some... things, which I'll be getting back to). Looking at where they've come from, the path they've taken, they're so different from when I first met them in Book 1. It's a marvel.

And now... The bad stuff. I have to warn you: It will be very long, it will be, in a way, intimate, there may be unmarked spoilers for the story, and it will probably sound rather incoherent at times. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to it.

I believe everyone has elements in stories that they love, and other ones that they loathe. The love triangle is one of the obvious ones, of course, but there are a lot more, and I'm going to talk about one of those here. Let me explain what this is about.

In book series, main characters that have never met one another are often thrown together in one big story. Along the way, they may learn that they are special, and they learn to appreciate one another, they become friends, or (sooner or later) something more. But after they become friends, and before the story ultimately finishes, there is often a period in which what they know gets turned upside down, and it has far-reaching consequences. Or, it may be that they start to understand that they are not the same after all, and that they don't know each other as well as they thought. What follows then is a part of the story where those main characters drift away from each other, very often because they don't understand, don't want to understand, what the problem is, and they somehow can't talk to each other about it, they keep secrets. It seems a bit weird writing this out, but you'll probably understand what I'm talking about, I hope. In trilogies, this is often in the second book, for example.

Here's the catch: I hate, loathe those storylines. I think it's terrible. On an abstract level, I get why the authors do that. It's because they want to deepen their characters, to make them more real, and I understand that, but I've always found it horrible to read about.

It was already visible in the previous book, The Lost Princess, that something was going on. Cracks started to appear in the relationship between Ellie and Lottie. And that storyline evolves further throughout Book 4. They don't talk to each other, they keep secrets from one another, they don't understand each other. For 320 pages long. Their storylines - of the two of them apart and together - went in a direction that, as a reader who is emotionally invested a lot in these characters, I found terrible. As a reader who wants character development and a good ending in Book 5, it would be amazing - but that happens on an abstract level, it's the emotional level that took over with me.

It made me sick. Literally. I know what you're thinking: That's not true, you're just overdoing it a bit right now, Tim. But I am being completely honest with you here. I read the first 240 pages in the afternoon, and afterward I hardly ate during dinner. I had no appetite at all, my stomach was upset, I couldn't stop thinking about what was happening, I felt tired. I was truly in a bad place for some time. On an emotional and relational level, this book is, if you ask me, very dark.

It would be easy to say that it's all, or mostly, Ellie's fault, but I believe that's just because you mostly follow the story through Lottie's eyes. And yes, Ellie does make some serious mistakes: She doesn't trust Lottie, she keeps too many important secrets, she does wrong things, she is cruel and dishonest. However, I would like to argue that Lottie is to blame equally badly: She too doesn't trust Ellie, keeps too many secrets, she is too scared to speak up, she does wrong things and she is dishonest as well.

I am not going to say that their relationship has evolved in an irrealistic way, because what would I know of it? Especially in a situation like this one. However, I do want to say that I think that their relationship's evolution is... horrible, on very many levels, and I had a lot of trouble getting through this book.

The book ends with a cliffhanger that (that much is clear) has been coming for a very long time. I don't know what to make of it - or rather, I don't know what that means for their relationship and story line. I don't have a clue how it's going to evolve from this point onwards. I'm just praying that, in the end, in Book 5, everything will turn out right. 'All's well that ends well,' they say, and I hope that will become truth as the story comes to a close. I hope that Ellie and Lottie will finally be able to talk to each other again, that they'll understand each other and be able to live with their differences and things they have in common.

Normally, when a new book in a series comes out, I re-read at least the previous book (sometimes the entire series), so everything is still fresh in my mind. I don't think I'm going to do that this time. I don't think I can read Princess at Heart without knowing what comes next. I hope that everything will turn out all right in Book 5, and that I'll then be able to re-read all the books, including Book 4, because they I'll know that it will be fine and it will be less hard for me to struggle my way through it on an emotional level. But without that closure... I don't think I can take it.

I would like to end this entire explanation with a quote from the very first page of the book, something which is said by Ollie:

Lottie loved the storm because she said it was the start of something new - because no matter how violent the raging winds and rain, no matter how loud the thunder, a storm meant the tension would be released, that the earth would be fresh and cool once more.

I can only hope, deep in my heart, that Book 4 was that storm, and that it has now passed and the tension has been released. Because that would mean that Book 5 will indeed be fresh and cool, or at least have a fresh and cool ending. I could sure use it.

So you might wonder, if it made me feel so bad, why am I giving the book five stars? Because it clearly was a horrible experience for me, so shouldn't the book be bad?
The answer's very easy, really: Anyone who succeeds in making me feel as emotional as I am now, deserves five stars. It's really the highest praise you can get from me if you're writing a book, and it happens only very rarely. It doesn't matter if I feel 'bad' and if that makes the book 'bad', because in a weird way that I can't explain I do honestly think that it is bad... What does matter is that someone - Glynn, in this case - has succeeded in making me feel like this. That is why I am giving Princess at Heart five stars. This book went straight for and to my heart. I don't think I've ever felt so bad after reading a book, and that's a big compliment. Well done, Connie Glynn, although I do hope you'll give us a happy ending in Book 5. If you're not sure yet, let me tell you this: If these books are written to be like, and based on, fairy tales, it would only be fitting that The Rosewood Chronicles also ends with '... and they both live happily ever after.'

I w końcu nadszedł czas czwartego, przedostatniego tomu "Kronik Rosewood".

Wow... Ellie dlaczego?

Lottie is still shaken up by what had happened in the woods around Rosewood Hall a short time ago. She wants to warn Jamie, but she must obey Ellies´ wish not to tell the royal family or anybody else about Haru and where he belongs. A situation that becomes worse by the day and when Haru tells Lottie after what rules they are playing and that she has no other choice but to follow them – things start to change forever.

The tone is very dark. And the more I read the darker it became. The relationship between Ellie and Lottie changes a lot during the ongoing plot and makes it clear to the reader, that not every decision someone takes is good for the other. In the previous volumes, the author used a light tone and a bit of humor when she was describing a dark scene or showed to the reader that a figure was hurt during a dialogue. Not this time. No unexpected surprises or twists and turns during the ongoing story. Instead, you are watching how a former friendship breaks apart only because of the dark secret a royal family is desperately trying to hide.

I noticed from the start that Ellie was struggling with the role Lottie was playing in her life and that she was still blaming herself for everything that had happened. The author shows her inner conflict and the way in which she finally decided about herself and Lottie´s future in a well-formulated way. Okay, I don´t agree with the way Ellie handled things in the second half of the novel and I am for sure not happy with the last few scenes in this book. But for the plot itself and the next volume of this series, it seems to be logical. Because otherwise, the story would have ended with this volume.

It is sad to see that, again, the three most important figures of the story are no longer a team. Every one of them believes that he or she must solve the problems they are facing alone and that each of them must protect the others from any harm or danger. I don´t know why the author showed it here again, but it was already clear to me in the previous volume, that Jamie, Lottie, and Ellie only find a practicable solution when they work as a team.

This is, so far, the darkest book of The Rosewood Chronicles. Not sure if that is a good sign or a bad one. The main figures must cope with pain, love, hate, and betrayal in an anything but friendly environment. The bright and light tone and of the atmosphere is gone. The boarding school has become a dark and secretive place. If you love dark stories with no happy end and a main figure who is constantly in danger, this is your book. If you want to know more, go, and read the book yourself.

A cute and heartwarming conclusion to The Rosewood Chronicles. I don't remember reviewing all of the books in this series, but I do recall finding all of the books quite fun to read. It consists of a diverse cast of characters and I also enjoyed the dose of magic in the plots that had me finishing them in a single sitting. The finale Princess at Heart is no exception to this.

While I found the characters a tiny bit lacking in dimensionality (particularly in the previous books), I think this has been greatly improved here. For example the headspace of three main characters: Lottie, Ellie, and Jamie - are all well fleshed out as their backstories are revealed. While the secondary characters had less share in the spotlight, I nevertheless found their dynamics pretty heartwarming to read about: just like how I'd physically experience the sweets from the candy factory.

I think my main concern with Princess at Heart is not the predicability of the plot but rather I have found the ending to be pretty rushed. So I felt that a lot of things that I really hoped would had been cleared up remained unresolved.

Barring the weak ending, I think Princess at Heart is a fun and uplifting ending to The Rosewood Chronicles. I think it's quite an enjoyable and thrilling series that middle graders who like elements of magic would love.

N.B. This book contains following content warnings: loss of loved ones / grief, abandonment, and harassment

It was fascinating to discover that Ellie, Lottie and Jamie still have the strength to fight Leviathan, the misterious group, after the discovery that, the one who is leading them is no other than Claude Wolfson, Alexander Wolfson's bigger brother. Though Haru comes to Rosewood to keep an eye on Jamie, Ellie and Lottie still don't consider an option telling Jamie that his friend, Haru, is part from Leviathan.
Will the trio have the strength to rise up togheter again now that Ellie and Lottie are keeping so many secrets from Jamie?
And most important, what will they do to stop Leviathan?
Well, I'm afraid, some secrets are too big for our trio, and their friendship won't last so long before it falls apart... Perhaps forever.
