A cozy mountain town, a sweet romance, and a secret society of sneaky women…
The sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand—the society itself is not secret—it’s the true nature of the group that is hush-hush.
Sugar Mountain is the kind of charming village that tourists adore. If you like small-town charm, quirky shops, and local art, this is the place for you. But when a blood smeared package shows up at the post office and it appears to be linked to a scheme that threatens Heidi Collinsworth’s historic home, the town takes on a sinister vibe. Heidi would lay odds that slimy Mayor Winslow is involved, but even with the enquiring skills of The Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society at work, proof is scarce.
The new guy in town, Adam Williams, is determined not to get involved in Sugar Mountain’s business. His last job in a big city planning office ruined his life, but Heidi needs his help. No matter how hard he tries to stay detached, Adam finds himself eyeball deep in Heidi’s problems, as well as the needs of her teenage son and a homeless dog.
With conflicting theories abound and tensions running high, it’s up to the ladies of the society to don disguises and go undercover. If they’re not careful, the town may fall to a wrecking ball, Heidi may fall for Adam, and the secret society will be exposed.
Meet the cast of colorful characters in this charming and zany introduction to a whole new series of romantic, cozy mysteries!
Kirsten is a writer with a love of art and design. She worked in the engineering field, taught college, and consulted free lance. Due to health problems, she retired in 2012 to travel with her husband. They live and work full time in a 40' travel trailer with their little dog Bingo. Besides writing romance novels, she enjoys selling art on Etsy and spoiling their four grandchildren.
As a writer, Kirsten's goal is to create strong female characters who face challenging, painful, and sometimes comical situations. She believes that the best way to deal with struggle is through friendship and women helping women. She knows good stories are based on interesting and relatable characters.
Another great story! A new series, and I am looking forward to reading #2 in the series! It's quite the little small town mystery! And will leave you hanging until book 2 comes out. I can't wait to see what is in store for this little town!
Author Kirsten Fullmer has worked in the field of engineering, has been a teacher at the college level, was a freelance consultant, and has an affinity for art. Now retired, she has published eight novels including her six part HOMETOWN SERIES, LOVE ON THE LINE, and now TROUBLE ON MAIN STREET.
An ongoing theme in Kirsten’s romance novels is the presence of strong female characters and how they cope with love, life and relationships. Stepping away from her previous Hometown Girl locale of Smithville, this story takes place in a very ‘special’ town – Sugar Mountain, North Carolina – and the unique aspect of this setting is introduced in the Prologue _ “The little town of Sugar Mountain, North Carolina rests in the high country of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanks to the beautiful scenery, secluded location, and four changing seasons, the area is a cherished tourist destination. Historians note that the first European settlers came to the area in 1775…What historians don’t know is that the sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand – the society itself is not secret – it’s the true nature of the groups that is hush-hush.’ Mystery, and the reader’s curiosity established, the story presses forward.
Kirsten’s summary outlines the plot: ‘Sugar Mountain is the kind of charming village that tourists adore. If you like small-town charm, quirky shops, and local art, this is the place for you. But when a blood smeared package shows up at the post office and it appears to be linked to a scheme that threatens post master, Heidi Collinsworth’s historic home, the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society take matters into their own hands. Heidi would lay odds that slimy Mayor Winslow is involved, but even with the enquiring skills of the society at work, proof is scarce. With conflicting theories abounding and tensions running high, it’s up to the ladies of the society to don disguises and go undercover. If they’re not careful, the town is in danger of falling to a wrecking ball, Heidi falling for Adam, and the secret society being exposed. ’
A cozy mystery, a small town romance, and in Kirsten Fullmer’s hands this novel comes alive with vigor - a refreshing and satisfying experience. Recommended on many levels.
Trouble on Main Street is really an easy read mystery with lots of intrigue and laughs throughout. The cast of interesting and quirky female characters make it a real page turner not to mention the genius factor of the secret society. I wanted to read this book in one sitting, desperate to discover what would happen next. I cannot wait for the next instalment I know will be just as clever and comical as this one. Fantastic!
If you like the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency Novels, you're sure to like Trouble on Main Street by Kirsten Fullmer. Set in the chocolate box town of Sugar Mountain, protagonist Heidi founds herself deeply entrenched in a mystery when a suspicious blood-stained package arrives at the post office she runs. In come the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society to solve the mystery. What secrets of the seemingly perfect Sugar Mountain well Heidi and the Ladies uncover?
A mystery and a romance novel novel that is perfect for a weekend read, with the tension being balanced with a developing love story between Heidi and newcomer Adam. There is also an adorable homeless dog that you're sure to fall far, I know I did.
It was a nice light read, so I'm looking forward to reading more of the Sugar Mountain Books soon.
Ms. Fullmer sure wrote this book in such a way that it kept the reader wondering why things were being handled the way they were. But, what was actually happening? Why were things being done? And, who was involved? How were the plans going to be accomplished? There’s a secret society of women, who seemed on occasion to a a group of babbling women! Add to all this a very attractive man & you have a fun, entertaining, easy to read book!
Trouble on Main Street is the first book in a new series from Kirsten Fullner. This author is renowned for creating strong female characters and exploring the bonds between them, and this story does just that. Set in the idyllic small town of Sugar Mountain, the characters of this book form a secret women’s society who work to unfold a mystery that threatens to destroy all that they hold dear while offering the reader moments of comedy and sheer sass along the way.
The story starts off gently, mirroring the mood of the small town, but gradually increases pace to become a riveting, page-turning puzzle. This is a feel-good read with elements of romance, that is well written, with a compelling plot and characters you can’t help but like and admire. It sits comfortably in the cozy mystery genre, and will be popular among readers who enjoyed the likes of Joanna Fluke and Ellery Adams.
TROUBLE ON MAIN STREET (Sugar Mountain Book #1) by Kirsten Fullmer is an entertaining small town cozy mystery with romance elements. This first book in the series introduces the ladies of the Sugar Mountain Historical Society and features their president, Heidi Collinsworth. This Historical Society is not quite what it seems. I listened to the audiobook.
Heidi Collinsworth is the town’s postmaster, a widow, a single mom, and the current grand master of the Sugar Mountain Historical Society which is also her home. A package with a bloody handprint shows up at the post office and at the same time Heidi learns that the Historical Society is due to be demolished. All the ladies of the society come together to investigate and discover a plan that could not only make Heidi homeless, but also destroy Sugar Mountain’s unique downtown shopping district.
Adam Williams has moved to Sugar Mountain for a complete change in his life. He is intrigued by the postmaster and when she asks for his help, he reluctantly agrees since his old job is just what Heidi needs. For someone who wants to stay to himself, he is completely drawn into Heidi’s problem, spending time with Heidi’s son and adopting a sad homeless dog.
Heidi is hiding a secret that she cannot reveal to Adam even as she begins to fall for him. The entire town may be destroyed, and the society exposed if they are not careful.
I really enjoyed listening to this cozy mystery and its fun cast of ladies in the Historical Society. The idea of the Historical Society and their terrible reenactments being the cover for a group of women who come together to better the town and its inhabitants without interference, since no one really knows what they are doing, is an idea that can lead to many more plots. The characters kept me listening, but the plot that started out interesting and well paced, ended up rushed and was not as satisfying as I believe it could have been. I do enjoy scenic small town locations and Sugar Mountain, NC is set in the high country of the Blue Ridge Mountains and I know that is beautiful country. The narrator was an excellent choice for this story, and I enjoyed listening to her bring life to the characters.
I look forward to listening to more Sugar Mountain series audiobooks.
This is a feel good, fun book that has it all: gal pals, a secret society, mystery, romance, and laughs. The women support each other, love their town, and their antics are a hoot. It’s the perfect mix of not being a heavy read, but not being bubblegum light reading either. Pick it up, you won’t regret it!
Seriously loved reading this book and I’m anxious to see more of the characters’ development in the next ones to come! This book introduced me to the genre of cozy mystery and I’m excited to discover more!
TROUBLE ON MAIN STREET was an easy read once I memorized all the society members names and their occupations. That just helped my mental image of what I thought they should look like and their characteristics.
It’s a cozy fun read but sort of unrealistic unless I’ve led such a sheltered life and they really do have secret societies where the leader inherits the meeting home and all the members can go incognito within the small town to spy on people. Ha. The mayor is up to no good and the women aren’t having any of it.
I found just a few errors in the first few chapters.
Cute, contemporary romance set in a small town in NC. Heidi, a widow, is the grand master of a secret ladies society. They meet in her historic home on Main Street. As postmaster of this small town, she discovers a strange and bloody package in the outgoing mail. Heidi enlists her ladies to investigate, and they determine that the mayor of the town is planning a big change to Main Street, including the demolition of her house. This unlikely group of women work together in silly ways to save their town. They discover some sinister secrets along the way. Enter Adam, a newcomer to town. Heidi and Adam are attracted to each other, but there are some missteps along the way. Light romance, light mystery. If you are looking for a quick and easy read, this fits the bill. The ladies group reminded me of the characters in the Disney film, The North Avenue Irregulars. This is book 1 in the series. #TroubleonMainStreet #KirstenFullmer
Started off slowly with a lot of characters to keep track of. The Sugar Mountain Historical Society is really a secret society of women who take care of their town. And they do it very well. They are a quirky bunch of delightful ladies and a very good read. Looking forward to the next book. We are self quarantining because the Covid-19 numbers are rising here in our area and we don’t want it. But, it is enabling us to catch up on our reading.
I don't understand why this book is so highly rated. The writing is bad, the characters are flat and the romance is ridiculous. Good concept, but ultimately this was terrible.
Is this place a small town or a small city? Couldn't tell, and it was referred to as both throughout the story. In any case, it often felt empty. Like, who lives there, apart from the secret society ladies, the mayor and Adam? Adam was also kind of weird. He found Heidi being a mum off-putting, which is fair enough, but then he also figured he should still ask her out because she surely would like that. Like he's doing her a favour or something...? All that sneaking around these women did got to a point where it was just a bit over the top, then the story ended rather abruptly.
I received a free copy of each book in this series in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my opinion of these books.
So this is why a series needs to be read in order. I know I did it the wrong way around. And I really loved doing that for a change and it really didn’t affect my knowledge of what was happening & going on – BUT – now I know maybe one or two things about this story that I probably didn’t need to know before starting. Anyhoo.
5 Reasons for our 5 pretty purple stars
This series really is just well written. I have never read any books by Kirsten Fullmer before but I cannot wait to get dug into some more of her stories. She creates this really colourful world that is so easy to get lost in. And I did. For 5 days straight. Ms Fullmer is excellent at introducing new characters in such a way that it doesn’t feel forced. Sharing their back story feels more like living it than being told a story. I love the byplay between Heidi and Adam. They make a really cute couple and I shipped them so hard it hurt. I loved the mystery and intrigue. I loved the way you were kept guessing throughout the book. It never felt cliche and too easy to guess. If you are ever in the need of a series that is incredibly bingeable this would be it. Pick it up. Read it. Save it. You’re gonna wanna read it again later.
What I love about cozy mysteries is they even make murder see nice and when I seen that Kiersten Fullmer had a new cozy mystery Series I knew I wanted to read it and I was not disappointed. There is a historical Society of women that is really a secret society of nosy women who live on Sugar Mountain. and when a bloody package shows up at the postal office and it seems postal master Heidi is being harassed the team has a mission. I will say there’s a lot of people in this book you have to remember but I was fine with that and now as the books start coming I will learn all their names. I love Kirsten fuller’s books and was not disappointed with this one.
This is sure to be just the beginning of many an enjoyable hour spent with Heidi and the wonderful women of the Sugar Mountain Historical Society. Unabashedly inquisitive, intelligent and endearing -they always have the reader on the edge of her seat wondering if they have finally bitten off more than they could chew! Recommended for anyone interested in a good, clean mystery.
This was a DNF for me. Too many characters thrown into the mix all at once got things off to a rough start. The "secret society" that has been running this small town for years and years, but hies their true mission behind bake sales and an annual play, was frankly not believable. It was like Junior League meets witches coven - bizarre!
They elect a leader and give her residency rights in their society's mansion for life which is over the top, yet somehow no one in the whole town except this giant group of women knows that this group basically runs the town? Um, wat? The last straw was when they invited a newcomer to the town to join with no vetting in place - they just dragged her up to the attic, said "hey check out our sekrit group!", then let her decide if she wanted to join or not. With processes like this in place, how the hell is this group still secret?
It's meant to be a lighthearted cozy read but it was just a little too much for me.
I expected this to be funny and have some excitement. Unfortunately it fell flat. I found it boring with characters that were annoying. I couldn't wait for this to be done.
4.5 Stars Full review for this series, well as much as I've read so far, on my blog soon.
Sugar Mountain series by Kirsten Fullmer
Trouble on Main Street, Mar 2020, 300 pages Where There’s Smoke, Apr 2020, 244 pages Shadows in the Salon, Jul 2020, 282 pages Problems at the Pub, Nov 2020, 270 pages KU, Cozy Romance Mysteries, 4-4.5 Stars
The covers are done in a charming artwork style that seems to go along with the feel of the stories and the characters in them. You get the sense of a cozy, small town with people who all know each other and work together to take care of their town.
“A cozy mountain town, a sweet romance, and a secret society of sneaky women…
The sleepy hamlet of Sugar Mountain harbors a secret society of women. Don’t misunderstand—the society itself is not secret—it’s the true nature of the group that is hush-hush.” That’s the way the synopsis starts out for the first book. And once you actually get into the books and start reading the prologues, it gets even worse. But first, a bit about each book.
Slightly Revealing*
Trouble on Main Street is Heidi’s story. Heidi is the postmaster and lives in an old historical house right on Main Street with her 14 year-old son, Tyler. She’s also the current head of the Sugar Mountain Ladies Historical Society. When she sorts the mail that morning she’s disconcerted by a long tube package with bloody handprints on it which appears to have already been delivered to the Mayor’s office and been sent back. Then, Nancy, the town gossip, comes in with news that they are going to be demolishing the old houses on Main Street (where Heidi lives) to make way for a mall. While she’s there, a new resident comes in to get his mail. Nancy does her best to get information out of good looking Adam without any real success. He succeeds in ruffling Heidi’s feathers, too, with his lack of forthcomingness. Being the postmaster, she might actually need some of that information Nancy is digging for and he is so cagily keeping to himself. Then she remembers she already has it. Later, at the meeting of the Ladies Historical Society, she’s not her usual calm and collected self with all this on her mind, but she manages to send her ladies out on missions to gather information.

Where There’s Smoke is Sarah and Hugh’s story. Sarah is the new kindergarten teacher in Sugar Mountain Elementary. She loves teaching her little children, but she’s shy with adults, unless it has something to do with her children. Sarah wants to have a firefighter come talk to the children and Hugh is the one who volunteers. Sarah’s pretty. Hugh is handsome. They start meeting for coffee. But we need a mystery, don’t we. Heidi has invited Sarah to be the newest member of the Historical Society. She’s hesitant at first, but the ladies put her at ease quickly. Well, the ladies do find a mystery, of course. Sarah has a secret, too. Heidi has her ladies go out on their missions, and Hugh does his part, too. We even get a front row seat at one of the ladies’ reenactments.
Slightly Revealing*
Shadows in the Salon is Michelle’s story. Michelle owns the hair salon and lives in a tiny apartment upstairs that she has put her personal stamp on. It’s not that she can’t afford a bigger place, she can, but she loves the cozy, personalized place she has created for herself. She’s been married three times and this place is just for her. She’s a very colorful personality and each and every piece in her apartment was chosen with care to reflect that. It’s also been positioned with care and thought so that she is as comfortable as she can be in her space. But what (or who) is haunting her space? And her salon. Could it have anything to do with this new client she had that morning when her clippers shocked her and she shaved the back of his head? Who is Matt? He’s very charming and handsome. He’s just her type. And he’s asking her to go to lunch with him at the pub across the street on her lunch break. Heidi and the rest of the ladies of the society will have to get involved before this all gets figured out and all the skeletons get revealed.
Slightly Revealing*
Problems at the Pub is where the ladies really shine. This is Monique and Tony’s story for romance. Monique owns the pub and has heard that the Mayor is planning on raising taxes on business properties. She’s been hoping to buy a house eventually. She lives in a room up over the pub and has since she took it over, but she’s always wanted a home of her own where she could have a family and a dog and get away from the business a bit. If the town raises taxes on the business, she may not be able to afford the house. Then there is the Mayor’s new assistant. Now that he’s caught up on the filing, what is he up to? Not just flirting with Monique. Heidi and the ladies of the society have the aid of Sarah’s kindergarteners in infiltrating the Town Offices to get at the truth of the matter. And what a shocker for them all!
I’m hoping the author writes more in this series since I’ve really enjoyed it and all its characters. Recommended.
This book is the beginning of the Sugar Mountain series by Kirsten Fullmer. She sets the stage by telling us about a stately old house currently owned by a middle-aged widow with a young teenaged son and about the Ladies' Historical Society that meets in the attic surreptitiously. The house and the town are both full of hidden passageways. Even the master bathroom in the house is hidden, as is the staircase to the attic meeting room. The middle-aged widow turns out to be the postmaster of the town. We meet the assortment of ladies who are in the historical society and we find out how much they do, or meddle with, things that have nothing to do with the history of this North Carolina town. I enjoyed myself reading this book.
A crooked mayor? A woman with an attic she didn’t want anyone to know about? An underhanded construction project? What next? Mission Rabid Racoon
“We don’t do breaking and entering, mind you,” Heidi clarified. “Just the entering part.”
What was it about motherhood that put men off? It’s not like she wasn’t the same person she’d been the whole last week. :) An easy read mystery with lots of intrigue and laughs throughout. Interesting, strong and quirky female characters and the bonds between them, make it a real page-turner and fun to read. not to mention the genius factor of the secret society. I cannot wait for the next instalment I know will be just as clever and comical as this one. Fantastic!
I grew up in one of these small towns. You know...the kind where everyone knows everyone’s business. Well that’s true in this town in NC too. Except for a secret society. Maybe there was one in my little town. Who knows? This is an enjoyable read. Just as fun as can be. It’s clean with a little corruption and a very teensy bit of “maybe they’ll get together”. It moved fast. Had enjoyable characters and a little humor. This is Book 1 in a series titled “Sugar Mountain”. Hope we see Book 2 soon.
Heidi was the Master of the Women's Historical society that was a coverup for the ladies to move silently as they projected new ideas for their town. They had to remain a secret since they didn't always use conventional methods. A highway to be built in town meant Main Street stores were going to have difficulty getting customers. The Society ladies had to come up with a counter plan since they discovered fraudulent plans and the mayor is their prime suspect. A nice cozy mystery.
Such a marvelously written cozey mystery charming and ,vibrant, sassy, quirky, tenacious, loving and caring of their home town. Every one seems to be finding self growth while trying to figure out a mystery or two. Acquire " Trouble on Main Street " book one of what appears to be a great new series 😀Kat
This was an excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed. It was extremely hard to put down. I would highly recommend this book to others. It certainly held my attention.
I enjoyed the believable characters. The sisterhood & the mystery mixed with a little romance. Very Good read. Couldn’t put it down. Well rounded age group of characters. Will be reading book 2 next.
