Seemed a little disjointed, like reading two different books, but the characters are well written, and the airport chapters were thrilling. Also liked that it was in my hometown airport. Easy, quick read.

"What's a dog without a master? "
Former homicide detective turned crime writer, Jake Roberts, is in Phoenix with his true love, Caitlin, for a relaxing holiday visiting lifelong friend, Fred, and his wife. But Fred, a pilot, is shot in the knee and chest at the ajrport by a desperate army vet. turned terrorist and suicide bomber which draws Jake back into danger as he goes to the rescue. With Fred hospitalised, Caitlan returns alone to host the big Hollywood party which had been arranged at Jake's home, promising to come back to Phoenix the next day, little knowing that there is a serial killer at large intent on making Jake the next victim.

After the kill, by author Cary Allen Stone, follows on directly from the previous novel, After the Goode although it is not necessary to have read that book to enjoy this one. The protagonists are nicely characterized and narration, by the author, further conveys the feel of the story. His voice, a little less than smooth, carries the emotional input well and is easy to hear. There are a few minor production glitches but is otherwise good. (And a small mystery from the previous book is solved as section three in this story had obviously been accidentally included in that book also. The introduction of the two psychologists at section three in After the Goode, never to be heard of again, had seemed very srrange).

This is a series which is fairly new to me. The writing is natural, fresh and focused very much on the people, not just the story. This makes for a fulfilling reading. All the emotions are their - love, joy, humour, frienship, fear, pity, sorrow, guilt, hate and anger, and any others I might have forgotten. This is an excellent series and the protagonists are rapidly becoming, if not friends, then at least aquaintances I look forward to meeting again.
My thanks to the rights holder of After the Kill, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom.

I can't give this book more than three stars because the first couple of chapters doesn't really tie in with the storyline that it ends up having but I enjoy the characters and the descriptions

Serial killer at large.

A veteran with a Medal of Honor suffering from PTSD, after having tried to get help from the VA, breaks down and opens fire at a Phoenix airport, killing several and wounding several. Jake, now a famous former Atlanta, GA detective, attempts to protect his best friend, Fred, who has been shot and is dying. Jake, with the aid of a swat team, manages to kill the shooter. Jake has never really been in love and then he meets Caitland and they fall madly in love with each other. Caitland is also a professional person living on the west coast, but then she and Jake decide they are going to live together and they each feel they can’t live without the other. Mackenzy Graham, a brilliant young woman who now has a PhD in psychiatry, is not entirely mentally healthy as she was also was raised in a background of psychological abuse. She has a grant that allows her to interview inmates of Broadmoor, the Hospital-Detention Center for the worse of the serial killers. MacKenzy visits often with the most severely mentally ill psychopath, who kills for the joy of it. From him, whom she pumps, she learns how to be a serial killer and murderer in such a way, the victim never is aware of how it is happening and because of drug given prior to her by MacKenzie, is unable to defend herself. Each time MacKenzie kills, she is more brutal with the victim’s body and then she leaves a message saying the West Coast Killer has been there.
The story moves rapidly along as Jake and Caitland engross themselves in their romance, along with their friends, Fred and Andrea, Wynter and Vince. But at the same time, Jake is trying to track down the West Coast Killer, believing the individual to be a male. The characters of the story are well developed, so is the action and you are engrossed in the story to the very end, which is a surprise.
I enjoyed the murder mystery and was given a complimentary copy for an honest review.

Vacationing in Phoenix was not going how Jake and Caitland had planned. It was supposed to be some down time spent with good friends. Of course Caitland still had to make trips to L.A. for business, but for the most part she and Jake stayed pretty low key. Life couldn't be better.. or could it?

A touching story that reaches to the very depths of your soul. This man has been through more than most, and he keeps going. Extremely well written, wonderfully defined characters and a story that will stay with you long after you've finished the book. I can't recommend this book any higher. It's fabulous and I enjoy each new book added to the series. I feel as though I know this man and I like that in a book. Characters who feel close make the story more touching. You need to read this book and see for yourself just how wonderful this series is.

The only issue was the opening. I felt it was way out of place with this series.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because this book series is one I'd like to see around for a long time. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

Welcome to the chaotic world of Jake Roberts who attracts trouble like a lamp does a moth. After deciding to try and take a slower lifestyle than he is used to, he is quickly caught up in a terrorist attack on an airport and recruited to help. Whilst he is helping with the enquiries, his own life and his loved one is under threat from an unknown source.

Cary Allen Stone is one to watch out for. He has an unique writing style and portrayal of his characters traits as well as their physiological traits is amazing, along with descriptive scenes you can envisage them in your minds eye.

Hard hitting and fast paced thriller with emotive human touches enthralls the reader and takes them on a journey through the troubled mind of a serial killer. Praise for this author and his work, which any reader would not be disappointed in. Looking forward to the authors next work.

Jake Roberts is a former homicide detective on vacation with the love of his life. When his friend, Fred, is shot by an active shooter, drawing Jake into action. While he’s distracted, his love is drawn away by a new threat. One who is determined to make Jake his next victim.

Even though this is my first book in this series, I found the writing to be fresh and easy to read. There’s plenty of suspense and drama, but the way it’s written makes it all the more engaging. I found the main characters, Jake in particular, to be easy to relate to, and in turn, easy to cheer on.

Narration by the author gave each character the perfect emotion to make the story more three dimensional and engaging.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Another great Jake Roberts book!

This is a heartbreaking story that starts off with a bang as a gunman terrorizes a Phoenix airport while Jake and his friends are there. Will Jake get involved or let the police handle it?

Then the story takes some bizarre turns as a new serial killer emerges to threaten Jake and his "family".

Jake, Caitland, Fred, Andrea, Wynter, John, Vince, Pablo, and many new characters bring drama and action making the book hard to put down.

I heartily recommend this book for your reading pleasure if you like lots of action and suspense.
