Kings of Merlin is a YA contemporary fantasy romance series. If you like plucky heroines, sizzling love triangles, Greek Gods romance, and innovative twists on Arthurian legends, then you'll adore Priya Ardis' captivating tale of blood & treasure.
I love books of all kinds—lately funny ones are my faves. But who couldn't curl up with a good mystery or romance?
My writing comes from a childhood of playing too much She-Ra and watching too much Spock. When Belle gasped at the library the Beast showed her, so did I! Growing up, I spend so much time I spent there, I could have been the phantom of the public library.
I hand-wrote my first manuscript at sixteen, scribbling in long notebooks on train rides while on vacation in India. I'm a longtime member of RWA, SCBWI, SIC. If you are looking for writing help, consider joining your local organizations!
If you like middle grade: Girl With Three Eyes is a fairy tale based on Indian lore! She would hate her third eye less if it actually gave her powers.
If you want a STEM chapter book for your kids: Merlin Raj and the Santa Algorithm, is a humorous dog's tale written under a new name D. G. Priya. Find it at Merlin Raj and the Santa-Algorithm, DOGS WHO CODE.
Admittedly, this is the first My Merlin book I’ve actually read my way through even though I actually have 3 of the previous books in my Kindle collection (thank you Booksprout for motivating me to get reading!). So, will I be going back and reading the previous books? You bet I will. I really liked all of the characters in this book. I’m assuming the author had the BBC Merlin series in mind when she wrote it, since this has a teenage Merlin with dark hair and a lean build. And while this Merlin has a different personality from the one in the TV show, he is still well-defined as a character. He has drive and determination, making him rigidly focus on his mission goal, while he also has a teasing, flirty side that comes out every once in a while, as well as an awkward unsure side that is still dealing with the loss of his powers from the previous book. I loved seeing Eowlyn and Merlin together (there were so many beautiful moments with them together!), and I really felt for her since time and time again, he puts the mission first. And as a fan of Arthurian tales, I love seeing new takes on all of the legends and I love seeing new spins on Arthur and Merlin. I really wish we could have gotten to know Arthur better in this book, especially since he seemed to be a man of few words. Why not a full 5 stars? This definitely can’t be read as a stand-alone. There were so many gaps that I felt like I was missing (like Eowlyn’s background and why she has the bloodlust, I really need to go back and read the trial for Excalibur, and really figure out who Golden-Hainey was, figure out exactly what the Dragon’s Eye is other than just being an amulet that connects Eowlyn and Merlin, and the awakening of Arthur). Honestly, I thought the plot meandered and felt overly long. I mean, they were supposed to be getting the Grail, but then they jumped from location to location (I did really love Sri Lanka. Talk about an exotic location as they made their way through the city streets and on a train through the humid jungle), and ended up with a collection of other relics (and by the way, this ends on a cliffhanger, but the next book looks it will be a lot of fun since it looks like it’ll be drawing on the original Arthurian tales even more closely).
I really enjoyed this Merlin story which came to me as a free arc to review, in which all opinions are my own. The characters and their adventures left me sometimes shaking my head and sometimes laughing. Without any spoilers being revealed, Merlin and Eowlyn are definitely my favorites and Arthur comes in a close third lol. In this book we follow Merlin and Eowlyn on their adventures to discover the Greek gods before the gods discover them. If you really enjoy ya books full of strong characters, magic, adventure, excellent world building and even some romance I would recommend that you pick up this series. I myself am now off to get the other books as this is the first time I have tried them. Many thanks to the author for allowing me to review this and giving me a chance to escape into the great word that has been created here!
I've been waiting this book for ages as I read the rest of the series and loved it. My expectations were high and I can say I wasn't disappointed. It was great to meet again the cast of characters and be immersed in this story that I read as fast as I could. An excellent world building, a great cast of characters and a well crafted plot. I strongly recommend it. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Honestly this was not my cup of tea. I really like the Arthurian legend and I can appreciate books that are based on it (also the ones that change it a lot like this one), but Kings of Merlin felt a little too much like a Merlin (the TV series) fanfic (and not a very good one).
