★★★★☆ A Black Eyed Witch Novel is consistently riveting and filled with imaginative characters. Author Rowan Staeffler has created an absorbing fantasy adventure that is perfect for fans of sword & sorcery." - Literary Titan★★★★★The writing flowed smoothly along and kept me engrossed in the story. I definitely recommend it! - Carlynne ToomeyTHEY THOUGHT THEY WERE ABOVE THEIR COMMON ENEMY. Lithia is a witch and possesses the natural inhuman strength, healing ability, and long lifespan that all witches have. Ronan, her lover, is a human royal guard and a former witch hunter. Together they travel the kingdom, hired by cities and villages to eliminate the creatures that prey on their citizens. While defending a town against an attack, the humans inexplicably turn on them. When the battle is over, no human is left alive. Word of the bloodbath spreads, and enraged humans blame the witches for the deaths. On the run and desperate for answers, every place they stop has new tales of similar massacres across the land. They discover a group of Naguals, hideous shape-shifting brutes, are behind the humans’ attacks on witches. A race against time begins as Lithia and Ronan hunt the Naguals while being chased by the very humans they are trying to save.If they don’t stop the Naguals, both humans and witches will be at their mercy and the world as they know it will be over.
Ronan and Lithia are well written characters that spark the ability for you to become attached and want to follow their story. A story packed with action and adventure.
The character, I liked the most was probably Alice, I feel like she brings a fresh and fun air to the group. Along with the rest of the cast.
The description in this book flows really well and doesn't feel like it's a block of information, like some book that take place in other worlds can feel. The writing gives a genuine flow to the story and therefore it became a quick, smooth read for me. Reading it cover to cover in less than a day. I wanted to keep turning the pages to see what happened next.
The nice rounded ending finished the book on an upbeat note after all the action and I liked that.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
the synopsis for this book drew me in and i thought i was going to love this book but i found it didnt quite flow together very well... plus i nearly vomited at one point when the witch gives some of her stuff to the kings knight....not quite what i was expecting.. and was dreading the next time it happened
at times i felt this book was for teenagers and that the storyline fitted them well...
not quite what i thought and sorry to say it wasnt quite for me
I read the first novel and I would really recommend reading the novels in order. Foreboding starts out slow building up revealing one secret after another that kept me on the edge of my seat wondering and waiting how everything was going to intertwine in the end. There were more twists and turns than driving down hair pain turns. I was drawn in from the first page wondering what was going on as each character was introduced giving us a little insight into each as their stories were revealed.
ONE WILD THRILLING ADVENTURE!!! Hatching harpies! Rowan delivers one action packed, pulse racing, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, page flipping bombshell, hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. Pushing boundaries and stretching limits, displaying the strengths and weaknesses being weighed and balanced, booting this gem into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, slamming it into overdrive, launching it into a tailspin with a jaw dropping realization. Shenanigans, escapades and mayhem rule the roost displaying the drama, turmoil, intrigue, underlying threats, danger, spiraling suspense and unnerving situations, along with a double dose of chaos while dodging deadly intents, you have one mind-blowing experience. The characters are complex and genuine with traits and qualities that add depth and realism, blend and flow transforming into amazing personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions that feel as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Rowan, thanks for sharing this lil' fella with us.
I received this book as a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I couldn't finish this book. This isn't a complete book, and this book would very much benefit from a review by a copy editor or a proof reader outside of Staeffler's circle.
WHAT I WANTED TO KEEP READING FOR - Staeffler's put effort into the worldbuilding and the history - and that's great! But the way the world is introduced in the second book is very awkward. There's facts, but there's few reasons to care about why the world is the way it is and what that means for our heroes. (e.g., Staeffler refers to how the new king has managed the economy - OK, cool, but what does that mean? Meanwhile, there's references to the heroes' tragic backstory that's glossed over - I'd prefer to hear more about that, and how that affects their decision making now, than the budget decisions of a kingdom they're pretty happy with)
- My favourite moment: I thought Lithia's sword and glove set was completely ridiculous, so I very much appreciated her first training session with her new kit: where she catches it and nearly clocks herself with the sword.
WHAT MADE ME PUT THIS DOWN - This is not a standalone book. I had no idea what was going on, and it became too hard to follow why the world was the way it was and why people did things. I felt like I needed to have a lot of pre-existing knowledge about the world and characters that I didn't have to understand the book.
- I found this frustrating to read. There are so many changes to tense, sometimes within the same sentence, that I felt like a time traveller with vertigo. Example from the text: "Witches and knights wandered around, orders given, strategies planned and contracts being issued to any available witch. Some witches are being escorts for noble people or transportation of valuable stock."
- There were too many incomplete sentences in the book itself: language is a big deal for me, and I found the way the book was written to be really jarring. I'm not sure if Staeffler is from a Non-English Speaking Background, but I would suggest he ask someone to proof read his next book before he publishes it, or pay for the services of an independent copy editor.
