Highland Promise Trilogy #3

Highlander Oath of the Beast

Rate this book
A promise is a promise, and Raven keeps hers, no matter the cost.

Five years ago, Raven of the Clan MacKinnon was forced to hide after the attack on her clan. She helped get her wounded father to safety, then watched helplessly as her two brothers were taken prisoner and marched off to serve the Beast, a heartless Northman determined to claim not only MacKinnon land but surrounding clan lands as well. What she witnessed that day shocked her. How she survived afterwards changed her forever.

Her brothers’ return home signals her own return home to her family and relative peace. Finally, the Beast has been appeased. Or so she thinks.

Wolf is an exceptional warrior, fearless, even ruthless when necessary. He intends to claim land that rightfully belongs to his family. All went according to plan until... how did one young lass escape a troop of warriors and ruin his well-executed plans? He searched five years for the MacKinnon lass without success, then she suddenly surfaces with a proposal for him that will end all strife and win him most of what he wants. She may think she is the victor, but he knows better. Or so he thinks.

Wolf accepts the proposal, signs the agreement, making the woman who caused him endless trouble... his wife.

Raven and Wolf face challenges, not only with each other, but with an old enemy seeking revenge, and unexpected secrets that reveal surprising truths and unforeseen danger.

Can foes become friends? Or will love decide for them?

3 Beastly Closure Stars

This is the final installment in the Highland Promise Trilogy, and I highly recommend reading the first 2 books Pledged to a Highlander (Highland Promise Trilogy, #1) by Donna Fletcher & Entrusted to a Highlander (Highland Promise Trilogy, #2) by Donna Fletcher in the series as well as the prequel Highland Oath (Highland Promise Trilogy, #0.5) by Donna Fletcher because this book will likely be confusing otherwise. This review may contain spoilers if you have not read the earlier books.

We were introduced to the feisty Raven, the youngest daughter of the Laird of Clan MacKinnon, when she was a teenager just coming into her own, though she had always been a precocious and strong-willed. In the prequel, the clan was attacked - Royden and Arran were captured and forced to become mercenaries to survive, and Raven barely escaped the plot to capture her. In books 1 & 2, we got bits and pieces about Raven, but mostly only that she was safe and would someday return. Her return happens 5 years after the attack, and Raven is now a woman - as beautiful as she had promised to be as a child, and tough enough to take care of herself. But there is a reason she has finally returned: she is wed to the Northman they call The Beast - the same man who attacked their home in an attempt to regain lands that were once his people's. The reason she agreed to marry him was to buy her brothers' freedom, and now they fear she will pay a much steeper price than anyone anticipated - who can love a man who has wrought the kind of pain and ruin he has?

Wolf, known to many as The Beast because of his battle prowess, stoic nature, and strength, agreed to wed Raven despite the fact that he had plans of marrying an easygoing, uncomplicated woman he had known since childhood. This merger is beneficial in that the lands he has reacquired border those of her brothers, and if it means there is a better likelihood of peace, he is willing to sacrifice by marrying a woman who will likely be anything but biddable and gentle as his intended.

Two strong personalities collide, neither willing to give an inch, but what will happen when the are faced with continuous attacks by a known foe on a tireless mission to destroy all that Wolf holds dear? Will they realize that they are stronger if they stand together, or will the distrust that they had for one another coming into the relationship be too much to overcome?

What I liked:
--- I have been anxious to find out what happened to Raven since reading the prequel, so it was nice to be able to learn what happened to her over the 5 years she had been gone
--- At the same time, learning about Wolf (who has also been in each book along the way) was interesting
--- Steamy goodness always delivers :)

What I didn't like as much:
--- The situation with where Raven was and what she was doing seemed far-fetched; I felt like there needed to be more build-up to that or more background? It just felt unlikely
--- All of the "reveals" kind of fell flat; I had guessed one of them, and the other was just kind of weird
--- The MCs went from hate-instalove REALLY quickly; I normally like the "us against the world" kind of story, but given the tremendous strife between these 2 and the history, it seemed a little weird; also, their romance was a little over-the-top mushy and downright cheesy at times for my taste
--- Finally, the whole attack and what happened after situation... it seemed really odd that it wouldn't have come up before now MAJOR

Overall, it was a mixed bag for me because while I was excited to learn about these two characters and glad that they worked past their major differences to find happiness, it just didn't seem to gel the way I had hoped. There were some things that I felt weren't very well or thoroughly explained; some things that didn't really make sense; and the romance aspect was a little over the top.

Please note that I received an advance copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Plot --- 3/5
Main Characters --- 3/5
Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5
Steam Level* --- 3.5/5
Violence --- nothing overly graphic (they're basically Vikings, so some battle/fight stuff)
Language --- not egregious
POV --- 3rd

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

I was really really excited for this one, and I loved it!

I was a little disappointed of how Wolf was introduced in this book, I mean, he was THE BEAST, the epic and feared warrior that makes you piss your pants, and how was introduced? Like a meh man:

“Silence surrounded them when the Beast and six of his warriors drew close, the remainder of his troop waiting on the outskirts of the village.

All of the men were large, the Beast being the largest of them all, though not as one would expect. Some warriors were thicker and broader in the chest, not so the Beast. He was leaner and harder with muscles. His skin was fair, his long hair dark and his eyes were as dark as Raven’s hair. His features were more than fine. They rivaled even Arran’s, and her brother Arran was a man of extra fine features. Though, unlike Arran, the Beast wore a beard that was cropped short.

He wore the furs and leather garments of the tribes across the North Sea. He was a Northman and enemy of the Clan MacKinnon. And from what her inquires about him had taught her, like the Northmen, his name was an indication of his nature, hence the name—Wolf the Mighty Beast—and the reason many referred to him as the Beast.”

But in the first book the introduction was epic and I was total speechless because how he was described, I was afraid myself when I read it:

“Warriors fanned out along the edge of the woods, circling the clearing, some wore helmets, some didn’t. A section parted and into the clearing rode the Beast.
He sat his horse tall and straight, not a slump to his body. A fur cloak was draped over broad shoulders and some type of leather hide covered his chest. He wore a helmet, a narrow piece running down the center to cover his nose, leaving a portion of his cheeks and beard-covered jaw exposed. Long black hair fell from under his helmet to rest past his shoulders. But it was his eyes that drew the most attention. They appeared as black as the darkest night, not a spark or twinkle of light to them, empty eyes, soulless eyes, and Royden understood why men feared him.

The Beast snapped his hand and one of his warriors disappeared and reappeared quickly with two horses in tow.

“Firth is mine,” the Beast commanded, his deep voice full of strength and the confidence he’d be obeyed without question.”

In this one I did not feel that power of The Beast when he was introduced, i mean, this HIS book, it has to be epic, i don’t know, maybe it’s just me, anyway, I still liked and loved the book and how protective and possessive he become of Raven.

I would like it to know more about Trevor and Wolf’s sister.

Wow! Wow! Wow what an amazing read, simply unforgettable
I have to admit that I always love this authors books as they always tick all of my boxes of what a really great read should be. The main characters Raven and Wolf “The Beast” were simply wonderful and the way they were written and their interaction with their families was so heart wrenching at times.
Raven had been away from her family for five years and during that time they had not known if she was dead or alive, unbeknown to them she had adhered to the family promise all those years ago and had bargained her freedom for the freedom of her two brothers unharmed along with others she cared for.
As she had agreed to marry Wolf it had been a great shock to everyone and all had believed that the marriage might fail but she was true to her word and once pledged would not break it, she would try and make him as good a wife as she could and together, they would bring their countrymen together.
Unfortunately, as things start to settle it soon becomes apparent that there is another black cloud on the horizon and as he closes in on their settlement and attempts on Ravens life are made it is apparent that Wolf will have to see the demise of Brynjar.
This is a wonderful read and I do not want to spoil the plot so all I will say is that like me you will find that once you begin reading you will not be able to put this book down until you reach the very last page.
Then like myself you will find yourself anxiously awaiting the next book by Donna Fletcher.
I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

Stars 4/5 (Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)

This book was good, worth reading in a few days. It hit pretty much most of my personal markers for a good read and well roundness of the book. my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions 4. stories with family/friends and 5. I’ll read the book again and again

The development and interest in main characters, and secondary characters was enjoyable. It kept me wanting to know and read more. H/H were well paired with a few ‘bumps’ along the way.

Laugh out loud with humorous moments. The give and take dialogue was wonderful as well as action filled.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. Not a lot of historical accuracy (no big deal to me), not a lot of internal character dialogue and not a lot of descriptive scenery written out.

Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top and was intertwined rightly in the story telling. 2.5/5 rating hotness and steam.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). You get past book characters in this story.

would absolutely recommend the book and the series. you don’t have to read the series in order however you’ll miss the true telling of the story around the series.

Five years ago the Clan MacKinnon was attacked and brothers, Arran and Royden were taken prisoner to serve the Beast. Their father was injured and sister, Raven watched the horror of what happened to her family and disappears. After her brothers return home, Raven is able to return home as well after being in hiding the past 5 years. Although she brings a big secret with her when she finally does make it home.

Wolfe (Beast) is an exceptional warrior and intends to claim his lands that rightfully belong to his family. Everything was going well until he spent years trying to find the MacKinnon lass. She suddenly surfaces with a plan that surprisingly Wolfe goes along with but much to his surprise he has gotten more than he has bargained for when he agrees to take Raven as his wife. Before they can get settled there is a really evil enemy they much stop from destroying everything they are trying to build together.

I have read every book this author has written and with each one I find a favorite new story and a favorite new Hero. Once again this is true, as I absolutely loved Wolfe and Raven although she could be very exasperating at times. The relationship between these two is rocky at first but as their time together grows the story turns into pure romance. Their love was one of complete trust, respect and passion. Once they realized and admitted their love everything else fell into place. Raven was a very strong character but had to be because of what life had given her. Wolfe was a strong, determined man who wanted the people he cared about taken care of. There is a beautiful romance, a really, really evil man, a mystery or two, friendships with the secondary characters that were such a great addition to the story. I read this in one sitting because it was just that good. Read this entire series and you will laugh, cry, and get frustrated with the characters but when you get to “the end” you will know you have read an outstanding story.

I've been reading Donna Fletcher's books for a while now and I definitely know there's always something much deeper, there's always a "Old Mary" somewhere with secrets that make me drop my book. I enjoyed the book very much and look forward for your next book, I truly enjoy your writing, so thank you.

Highly recommend you read all other 3 books before reading this one.

Now off to visiting Old Mary again. Haven't read her in a while.

‘Strange. Compelling. Enticing.’

I was looking forward to this book, its the final of the trilogy and it doesn’t disappoint.
An amazing book, well worth the read. The book has drama, love, action and there is a mystery involved which hooks you in as you continue to read.

Interestingly, it is not a long book (although I would preferred it to be longer) but the benefit of that is the story doesn’t linger and the narrative moves quite quickly, leaving you gripping more and more.

There are spoilers ahead, you have been warned.

Storyline:
The story centers on Raven and Wolf, both have been wed to one another out of convenience. Each married for their own reason but both have assumed that the other proposed this alliance, nonetheless they both are honor-bound to fulfill their promise of staying wed. Raven has evaded Wolf for 5 years, she finally has returned home but Wolf has come to collect, and Raven leaves with him without a protest. They arrive at Wolf’s home and from there begins the battle of wits. Raven continues to defy her husband because she is a strong-willed and an independent woman and Wolf tries to tame her, albeit unsuccessfully. They are attracted to each other however, they consider each to be an enemy. Eventually, trust begins to grow and from there love blooms. Theres is also the mystery of Brynjar and his true intention as well as the attempts on Raven’s life.

The story was good, it didn’t drag but kept moving. I really liked the mystery and intrigue that keeps you guessing and puzzling over but that twist was wow, I did not see that coming i.e. Brother Noble’s identity.
The relationship between Raven and Wolf was great, once they consumate their vows, things start to change between them. I would have liked to have seen more chemistry and conflict between them before they started having sex regularly and often (which I thought was unrealistically alot). It felt too quick for them to go from enemies to being in love, needed more angst, tension and development. However, because the book is not long the story develops quickly and moves fast. The love scenes are well done and H and h sizzle in those parts.

Characters:
Raven - I liked her, she is strong, skilled, and self-sufficient, fiercely loyal to those she loves and she loves with a passion. I liked how she is direct, doesn’t beat around the bush and has a sharp mind. She is very intelligent, intuitive and cunning. She also craves stability, happiness and love.

Wolf - I liked him, he is strong, protective and sharp. However, I would have liked to see more of him with regards to his ferocity, he needed something more - he is known to be this beast, feared by all but he isn’t i troduced like that. He shares similar traits as Raven and both think alike.

Supporting cast were great, it was nice to see the characters from previous books - they have a family reunion at the beginning of this book which is good. It was nice to see that Raven’s band of men get their happily ever after too.

There were moments in this book that echo realities of life which I found to be profound such as:
1) to hide your vulnerability you wear a mask - “let the mask slip and you become vulnerable”
2) trust is earned
3) communication helps to clear misunderstandings and builds trust
4) being loyal to those that you love and protecting them
5) not to be naive, knowing the true nature of man.

There were some words/moments of wisdom in this book which are profound making you pause for thought.

Overall a very good read - the author doesn’t disappoint and has produced another great trilogy.
Eagerly awaiting for the next one.

Finally, I'm done!!! wohoo

Okay thoughts!!
1. Read this book if u want more seggsy scenes.
2. I read a review who said to read in order. But then that only made me even bored because of the repeated information written over and over again, throughout the series. I'd say you can read the prequel, and then read this book because I kid u not, this book literally has all the spoilers for the 1st and 2nd book hahaha Though the 2nd book was kind of okay-ish, but if u read from 3rd book, you won't really miss out much.. you just wont be able to read the villain-strikes scenes. Yea.
3. insta lust-love fosho
4. literally got sick with all the "love love love" talks.
5. disappointed that wolf isn't that as possessive alpha type as I expected. I feel like he's just another arran/royden.
6. rayven, oh rayven, I really was annoyed with how repetitive the phrase "No, I'm not going to obey you" used over and over and over again.
7. the story was still okay but it's just everything's so repetitive, from how the Rayven's family should have protected her TO Im not going to obey you because I want my freedom TO excessive praise of Rayven's to her (which was also disappointing because we were not told how they got along with each other) TO im your husband I am the one doing the protecting and you be a good wife TO.. i forgot what else, but well if u finish the book and is reading this then you'll know how I feel.
8. Brynjar - what? evil? poorly represented in this story. He's just like every normal villain not the evil evil we were told to. No dramatic evil scenes from this one. Boo!
9. towards the ending, skimmed my way through.
10. not enough character development.

hmm. maybe this shud be 2.5
i kinda like 2nd book better, I just wished I didnt read Oria's and Royden's book first so i could have enjoyed the plot in 2nd book.

I don't think I'll be reading any other books from this author for a while. Need a break.
But I'm glad I didn't dnf any. I still wanted to read the whole series, it's just poorly executed and too repetitive that you'd rather read the last book to know the whole series.

ADORABLY SWEET. THIS IS A GOOD START IF YOU'VE NEVER READ HIGHLAND ROMANCE BEFORE. #enemiestolovers #powercouple #strongendearingheroine #myspouseismybestfriend #couplegoals

THIS STARTED OFF LIKE ANY OTHER ENEMIES TO LOVER HIGHLAND ROMANCE, AND I WASN'T EXPECTING MORE...JUST PRETTY MUCH ENJOYING THE STEREOTYPICAL CLASSIC but I rather found myself enjoying the fights, teasing and passion between the main couple. They grew onto each other, and they were the exact definition of what a storybook couple should be - loving, trustworthy and honest. I loved how they both communicated on problems, confided in each other and learned how to trust one another, making the best of their situation, doing what's best for their family and their clans. I think they were good leaders, and also wonderful siblings and lovers. When I envision having a relationship, this is what I want to strive for as a couple.

RAVEN was a mix of headstrong and borderline annoying but, in the end I still liked her for it. After everything she has endured and survived, it's no question she's a survivor and she's the type who ACTS FIRST and ASKS QUESTIONS LATER. The story opens with Raven wedding WOLF to secure her brothers' freedom but, it's later revealed that someone had orchestrated their wedding and the question is who? And who wants Raven dead? Or Wolf for that matter? Normally I'm not as engrossed in the mystery than the romance but, this one captured my attention. I enjoyed Raven's quick wit, her verbal sparring with Wolf and how endearing she can be. It's almost unbelievable how "perfect" their relationship was...I actually wished for some dramatic angst like "please throw in a freaking mistress or something!" but NO...there wasn't such a thing. I won't spoil it for you but if you like strong but still cute heroines, then Raven's it for you.

WOLF like most of Fletcher's heroes pale in the background when paired with her heroines. SAD FOR HIM BUT OH WELL. He's a capable leader, strong and also knows how to handle his wife rather well given the circumstances of their 'arranged marriage'. I think he was mature and responsible, so they didn't have much problems as a couple, only to build the trust between them to further strengthen their ties.

OVERALL this was enjoyable. If you're looking for a story that really gets into the plot while charming your knickers off then this would be perfect for you. And the characters don't annoy you either. So I guess that's a win-win. ;)

Highlander Oath of the Beast by Donna Fletcher
Highland Promise Series Book Three
Wolf, know, as the Beast has been searching for Raven. He’d planned to marry her to one of his men, but it ended up that he would be the one marrying her. She was more than he ever expected her to be.

Raven of Clan MacKinnon has been hiding for five years. On her brother’s wedding day, they were attacked. She didn’t want to be married off to some Northman, so she left. It was a horrible day and some pretty bad years on the run. But it’s over now. Not just hiding and running...but she would be marrying the Beast. Enemy to her family. At least she’d be close to her family.

A warrior like Wolf is always in command...only, he finds that rather difficult with his new wife. Raven has learned many things in the five years she since the attack. One thing for sure, she wasn’t going to bow to any man. She was in control of her life and could protect herself. A grand finale to this series and many surprises!

Highlander Oath of the Beast
Highland Promise Trilogy #3
by Donna Fletcher

Finally the conclusion to this series, I had so looked forward to reading about Raven and Wolf and I wasn’t disappointed!

Five years of running, keeping one step ahead the enemy has come to a conclusion for Raven. Keeping the enemy close has taken a new meaning for her, becoming Wolf’s wife was promised in exchange for her brother’s freedom and Raven always keeps her promises.

An intense roller coaster ride full of intrigue keeps the reader engaged. There’s a plot for kidnapping and a mysterious traveler monk that you’d never guess at his identity. Wolf and Raven have great chemistry they complement each other well, she’s the perfect mate for him, no wilting flower. I liked how she managed to wrap him around her little finger. Overall this was a fantastic read, you can never go wrong with Donna Fletcher books! She’s a master storyteller, I highly recommend this and all her books. Can’t wait for her next book.

Was gifted a copy this is my honest opinion.

Highlander Oath of the Beast by Donna Fletcher is book Three in the Highland Promise Trilogy. This is the story of Raven and Wolf 'The Beast'. I have read the previous books (and Loved them!) so that did add to my enjoyment of this one. Raven had started out in the being of the series as a child bordering on womanhood. In this book she is a women who has decided to marry "The Beast" to get peace for her family and others. Wolf has been the cause of several upsets in battles which has got him named the beast. Agreeing to join with Raven will bring lands and some peace that he has wanted. Although he had hoped to marry a more subdued women he finds that Raven is anything but and of course they butt heads. I am a big fan of Ms. Fletcher's writing and try to read all that she writes, so I do recommend this book and series.

This is the final book in the Highland Promise Trilogy and it does not disappoint. The Beast has met his match in Raven, sister to Royden and Arran. Two souls who learn to love each other even though they thought to be enemies and secrets finally revealed. The story kept me enthralled throughout and I just could not put the book down. If you are a fan of Donna Fletcher, this book will not disappoint and if you have not read books by this author, I highly suggest you pick up this series as again you will not be disappointed.

A fairytale set at some distant past in Scotland. A kickass woman and a supposedly scary beast of a man who behaves more like a lamb. Ok he roars a lot.
The story is entertaining but I couldn’t care for the main characters. This level of independence would not be allowed for a woman at this time in Scotland (12th century). I know it is fiction but still it didn’t work for me.
But if you like strong women who lead their men by the nose, never do what they are told, plus a good dose of sex this might be a good book for you.

So, so good

I admit that I only planned to start reading it last night, but ended up not putting it down. It was impossible, as the story kept moving along and pulling me right along with it. I loved the HH both characters are strong, stubborn, great leaders, and are capable of great love and passion. Raven is also fearless, Wolf is swoon worthy I warn you as you will fall a little in love with him too. This book wraps up the trilogy nicely, it ties up all of the storylines and will leave you smiling.

3rd book in the series. The story of Raven and the Beast.... Super loved this story, especially Raven a very stubborn woman who marries the beast who is her enemy. Beast is bossy but Raven never seems to listen and has a band of men whom she leads that she brings with her. It is a book you can't put down as you want to see what is coming next from the two of them. Read the whole series, you won't be sorry.

This was book #3 in the series. Though can be read as a stand-alone. I have to say this was my favourite in the series.

Filled with great characters, vivid detail creating a story filled with mystery, danger, some humour, happiness and romance. Ending was both surprising and very satisfying.

I have to say I’m now a big fan of this author and will continue to buy her books.

Wolf and Raven.

I really enjoyed the storyline. I was engaged from the beginning. The only thing that bothered me about the book was that Raven was too over the top for me. However, the story was so good I kept reading. A fitting end to the series.

The end is here and it is GRAND!!!
Do not read this tale out of order, it is too good of a tale to mess it up with spoilers.

If you like tales of the highlands and or Northmen then this is your tale and your author.

There is no sweetness that raised a protective instinct from a man to this heroine. She was so rude to hero from beginning.
