Cathy Skendrovich has always loved a good story, and spent her formative years scribbling what is now called Fan Fiction. The current heartthrob of the time featured heavily in all her stories. Unfortunately, once she went to college, her writing took the form of term papers, written on typewriters instead of computer keyboards.
Upon graduation, Cathy took a job as an English teacher in a middle school. Along the way, she married her husband of now thirty-two years, had two sons, and moved to southern Orange County, California. She chose to work part-time in the school system there.
Now she has returned to writing. Prisoner of Love is her first published novel, followed closely by The Pirate's Bride. A sequel to The Pirate's Bride, as well as another contemporary romantic suspense are in the works.
She likes writing romance because she feels it's lacking in today's technological world. While she enjoys writing contemporary stories, creating romance in bygone times fascinates her. She hopes her ability to write in both genres will be the beginning of a long and satisfying writing career.
Zone of Action is the first book that I have read by Cathy Skendrovich and I was not disappointed. This book was full of plenty of action and suspense, not to mention plenty of steamy sex. The main characters had great chemistry and were very likable. More importantly, the story was actually very realistic. It was something straight out of an NCIS episode.
When Army Criminal Investigation Department Agent Cameron Harris is tasked with escorting his former best friend/ex-soldier turned traitor Brett Gates to Leavenworth, Cameron finds himself in the middle of a terrorist plot that takes him across the country and right into the arms of Brett’s ex-girlfriend Audrey Jenkins. Audrey, who just so happened to have been integral in getting Brett convicted, ends up being put in danger after Brett escapes his prison transport. As a much larger plot begins to unfold, Cameron and Audrey have to use all of their military training and resources to try and prevent an act of domestic terrorism that they are sure is on the verge of being committed by Brett and whoever he is working with. Of course, spending so much time together brings their attraction to the surface. Cameron and Audrey have a really intense spark and their time in the bedroom is very much explicit and explosive.
I really enjoyed Zone of Action from beginning to end. Audrey may have retired from the military but she was very much a soldier in her own right. Cameron was the epitome of GI Joe but also showed his vulnerable side. The two of them made for a great team and nothing about their relationship seemed forced. They seemed to have been meant to be together and will surely have a great future. I look forward to reading other books by Cathy Skendrovich. She has gained a new fan.

This is one of the best romantic suspense thrillers I've read in a while. Probably since I picked up Juno Rushdan's Final Hour series. Zone of Action is filled with non-stop action, adventure and romance. I'm not too familiar with military lingo, ranks, etc. but I was never confused while reading. Skendrovich does a good job familiarizing the reader with the world her characters live in. I also liked that the story was not overstuffed with characters, which tends to happen in romantic suspense. The plot was well constructed and believable. The characters face obstacles in trying to stop the terrorists and the reader is constantly left wondering how they'll save the day. There are some loose ends by the conclusion but that's mostly to set up the next installment in the series. Characters were great. Audrey and Cam have inner demons that haunt them and they are brought up. I liked that the author included this aspect to their characters since many people who do serve in the military deal with struggles similar to theirs. It made the characters seem more realistic and genuine. I rooted for them. Their romance was also sweet. It was sort of forbidden romance mixed with slow burn. And man was it steamy when they finally got together! I want to also shine a light on the writing itself. Skendrovich's writing, in my opinion, just flowed really well. This book is about 400 pages but it never felt long. This story gripped me by page one and didn't let me go until the end! Can't wait to see what the next installment has in store.
Zone of Action is a fast-paced romantic suspense story with two protagonists who aren't at all sure they're ready for the "romance" part of things--the "suspense" portion probably wouldn't have been their first choice either, especially since it's coming their way thanks to her ex-boyfriend and his former team member and friend, but it's come for them anyway ;)
Overall I enjoyed the story--the terrorist plot was fairly intense, and I loved that Audrey was not only able to hold her own in the action, but that Cam was 100% on board for her to have an active role in everything that was going on. She'd already left the military by the time the story begins, but Cam still depended on her for her (former) area of expertise, and his confidence in her was spot on. Their romance was a but rushed from start to finish, but it wasn't wholly unrealistic; they were a couple that it was easy to root for when all was said and done.
The book had the feel of an action movie (with a whole lot less sexism than they usually have, though!)--heavy on the fun, a bit lighter on the realism--and was exactly what I needed this week to keep me entertained. This was my first from author Cathy Skendrovich, but definitely not my last!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I have to be honest and state that I had a hard time reading this book. Topic of terrorism in a romance book was okay, but to read one now was hard. Audrey was a former terror cell expert and Special Agent Cam were teamed together to fight her ex and his former best friend who had betrayed the country by selling military secrets. The plot was predictable and the ending was okay. The book does describe the many dangers of being in the military. The character of Zack was great. I’m thinking he might get a book. Overall, I’m wasn’t a huge fan of the book but if you like military/war romance books you will like this one.
I received this ARC from the publisher and Netgalley for my honest review. Thank you for the copy.
Cathy did a magnificent job of writing this book (Zone of Action) that kept me on the edge of my seat! The suspense, twists and turns and romance in the middle of the many tense situations was exceptionally well done. She has a knack of grabbing my attention at the beginning and holding it racing through the book to find out what happens next!! I really enjoy it when I actually feel like I am there seeing all this action happening, rather like a fly on the wall. Her use of the English language is superb, as I do feel that I can see the how and why of every part of this story.
Zone of Action is a fast paced high action story as Audrey and Cam team up to track down the man that betrayed them both. Their story is exciting and the relationship between them is a nice slow build. There is definitely chemistry there and you can feel it all the way through the book. This book is not to be missed. I highly recommend it.
This is another amazing well written military-ops romance read. This thrilling story follows the characters Audrey and Cameron. This book is full of action, romance, drama and suspense. This is romantic suspense genre at its best with plenty of twists and turns through out the story. This book has well written characters and an amazing edge of your seats story.

Disclaimer: An eARC was provided via The Publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. The Thoughts, opinions & feelings expressed in the review are therefore, my own.
I actually couldn’t resist getting my hands on the eARC of the book because it had all the markings of a fast paced and action filled romantic suspense that will have me glued to the pages. And it did. But because of the actual suspense in the book; rather than the connection between the protagonists – Audrey and Cam.
We meet Audrey when she is testifying against her ex – boyfriend, Brett, a high – ranking military officer in his trial for treason. And she locks eyes with Cam, then. Cam, however has a long history with her ex; at one point Brett had saved his life; so he finds it really hard to believe that the man he served with would be capable of treason against his own country.
But when he threatens Audrey after the trial ends and then when he escapes his custody while Cam is transporting him – Cam knows that he will surface only where Audrey is. The only problem? Audrey wants nothing to do with this threat because being ex – military herself, she know she can take care of herself.
I actually enjoyed the suspense part of the plotline – and while Cam and Audrey seem to be a perfect fit on paper – somehow that connection/chemistry never really translates to the reader in me. Still I enjoyed the actual plotline and would definitely read more from this author in the future!
A fairly good story with lots of promise. Audrey is a kick ass female soldier who although no longer on active duty has not forgotten her oath. She turns in her ex and becomes embroiled in a terrorist plot. This brings CID agent Cam into her life. He is hot and hard to resist. It is a good mix of action and romance that shows the many dangers and choices of the military.
Zone of Action was an engrossing story and an engaging romance. That was well paced and had moments of action, and a big twist as the story reached an exciting conclusion. And I liked the two main characters Audrey and Cam. Who are both betrayed by fellow soldier, best friend and in Audrey's case lover Brett. And they are both determined to stop him whatever the cost.
Would recommend.

Zone of Action is certainly the correct title for this new romantic/suspense thriller from Cathy Skendrovich. The action is non-stop from the prologue to the final page. A fast paced action story. A few twists along the way. The style of writing was really good, very descriptive, flowed really well. Looking forward to reading more from this amazing author. Happy reading everyone 4 1/2 stars ⭐️
Audrey had noticed her boyfriend acting really weird, and put it down to maybe an affair, that she could have coped with, what she couldn’t accept was the fact Brett was a traitor, to sell out his country was reprehensible, he had to be punished! And facing him in court took guts, he stopped being the man she loved. It was time to move on.....
CID Special Agent Cameron “Cam” Harris wanted to give his friend the benefit of the doubt. He surely couldn't be a traitor?! That benefit of the doubt turns out to be the biggest mistake of his career.....
Audrey is living the quiet life, serving her country as a terrorist expert has ended, she’s now a owner of a flower shop.
Having Brett escape him burned Cam, his friend was a traitor, he was going to prison, and Cam wanted to take him there. And now it’s his job to recapture him and put him back in handcuffs. He’s almost certain Brett will go back and kill his girlfriend, but Cam thinks there is more to it than that, did she hear something she wasn’t suppose to? Or did she have something that Brett needed? Well he was going to find Audrey and ask her. She was either going to help him, or she’s bait!!
The attraction between Cam and Audrey is a slow burn romance, she isn’t ready for anyone yet, and certainly not the best friend of her traitorous ex!! But as they work together to find Brett, they can’t help but become closer. But is Cam using Audrey as bait? Will she be able to lure him out? And if Brett takes the bait, will they be able to stop him before he hurts anyone else?
A fast paced action story. A few twists along the way. I don’t usually read mysteries, but I’m glad I did with this one. Cam is ex army, a good career cut short after a good friend dies in the field. Taking his training in the army, he becomes an agent that investigates service men and women. He never once thought he’d have to take his best friend to prison. Audrey is also ex military, so she doesn’t scare easily, which is a good job. Her being hunted by an ex would frighten most people. They work well together, find clues, working out where Brett might be, and what his game plan is. The style of writing was really good, very descriptive, flowed really well. Nothing seemed wasted, I didn't get that feeling of page filling. Secondary characters Zack and Elena were great, Elena is best friend and coworker to Audrey, their friendship is lovely, very solid. Especially when Brett burns down the flower shop! I liked Zack, very down to earth, liked his sense of humour (hoping he gets a book)
If you like your romance with a heavy dose of military and mystery, then this book is for you.
This is the first time I've read Cathy Skendrovich and I found it packed full of action. It's one of my new favorite genres military-ops romantic suspense. This is about two individuals scarred by violence in the middle east, each dealing with it a different way. It's a twisty story about terrorists in the middle east & on US soil, betrayal and discovering love in surprising places.
Audrey Jenkins is a former terrorist cell expert. Her instincts about reading people are so good she was the best in her field. When she guessed wrong in Kandahar and witnessed a whole bus load of innocents blown up she left the military because she lost confidence in her abilities. She opened a flower shop and found a certain level of peace until she overheard her fiance Brett Gates spilling military secrets one day. She turned him in as a traitor to his country and was a witness at his trial where he vows to get even and kill her.
Cameron Harris owes his life to Brett Gates for saving his life in Kabul when they were on an intelligence mission. They lost their teammate Jimenez on that op and each of the team dealt with the loss differently. Cam moved on to CID-Criminal Investigation Dept of the military, Brett went to work with Audrey in terrorist groups. After Audrey retired they began dating. We find out Brett became disenchanted with the military operations with the loss of Jimenez and others. Cam requests to be Brett's escort officer to prison so they can have some closure. Along the way Brett attacks Cam and escapes. This starts a chain of events that leads to Cam and Audrey working together to unravel a terrorist plot here in the states and together they have to keep Audrey alive. It gets to a point these people don't know who to trust when they try to stop a terrorist plot on US soil.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hang onto your hat! This book starts with a bang and doesn't let up!
Audrey hunted terrorists for a living. Pity that same skillset didn't help her ferret out her weasel of a boyfriend was a traitor - selling secrets to the highest bidder until she overheard him one night. Now she has no faith in her former Intelligence Skills. She has laid out a new life for herself, in an occupation far removed from her former military career. Shame that said former sleazebag boyfriend didn't get the memo!
Cam still struggles to reconcile that the same man who saved his life in the Sandbox is the same traitor that Audrey helped out away. But as a show of respect to his former friend he decides to escort him to prison. Then gets a clock to the noggin for his support! But now that Brett is on the run, will he really show up to get the revenge he declared in the middle of a courtroom? Or will he continue his traitorous ways?
Audrey and Cam have found the most inopportune time for the attraction between them to surface. But with the able assistance of Zack (a former colleague of Cam and now Author), they are in a race against time to stop more atrocities committed in the name of Patriotism.
Great read! Really loved Cam and Audrey together. They both have hurdles to overcome in relation to their former relationship with Brett and the guilt they feel at not ferreting him out earlier. Zack is a very enigmatic character and I hope that he's going to get his own book in the future!
Cathy Skendrovich is a new-to-me author but the blurb of Zone of Action sucked me in. Always up for finding new favorite authors, I dove right in. I might need to add that I’m a romantic suspense junkie too. I blame Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys for planting that seed and Nora Roberts for nurturing it for a lot of years now.
What I liked about the book: The suspense started in chapter one and had plenty of twists and turns. There’s nothing worse than figuring out who did what and why less than halfway through a romantic suspense book, in my humble opinion. The action was fast-paced, so the chance to become bored with the story wasn’t really there.
NICUnurse’s Rating: Personally, I would have like to have seen a bit more development of the attraction between Cam and Audrey. Even with fast-paced, page-turning action, I think some more scenes where they actually opened up a little more to each other would have moved this story from more of a thriller/suspense to a true romantic suspense. With that said, I see a lot of talent with this author. She’s got a few books under her belt that have me intrigued, and this story has me looking forward to her next romantic suspense release. While I can’t say that I couldn’t put this book down, I can say that it did what I always hope a good book will do: distract me from my reality enough that I’m totally immersed in the fictional drama unfolding amongst the pages and invested in the outcome enough to finish the book. If you’re a romantic suspense/thriller lover like me, or just like fast-paced and action-filled stories, I think you’re going to enjoy Zone of Action.
I give Zone of Action by Cathy Skendrovich 4 out of 5 stars!
Terror cell expert Aurdrey Jenkins has seen too much death in her career. She figures out her ex a very high ranking officer that is in her unit is selling military secrets she turns him in. When she leaves the army she wants to have a simple life. Then she meets CID Special Agent Cam Harris who is trying to track down a military prisoner who escaped whole in custody. The prisoner had saved Cams life in the past.
Tracking the prisoner leads him to Audrey door he is positive her ex will end up there at some point. Audrey wants nothing to do with tracking down her ex but a terror cell starts attacking army intelligence officers and she's positive it is connected to her ex.
Helping Cam is the right thing to do but while hunting down her ex the attraction they feel towards each other might be a distraction that can get them both killed. Will they catch her ex? Will they both survive? Will they get a happily ever after? Read to find out!
This is a new author to me and reading the summary for the book caught my interest and I really wanted a chance to read it. I am really glad I did and soon after bought her other books as well. Zone of Action by Cathy Skendrovich is a non stop start to finish book that will make you grab on to your hat because if you don't you'll never find if you don't. She's a new author to me and I plan to catch up on her other books. It's totally worth all 5 stars and then some more.
Audrey Jenkins finds out that her boyfriend Brett is selling our military secrets to the wrong type of people who will kill anyone in their way. But she's no longer military and now owns a floral shop in Northern California when Cam Harris shows up at her door to let her know letting her know that Brett has escaped. They will be on the run trying to keep one step ahead of GUWP who will they attack next to make their plans known.
Cam Harris couldn't believe that his teammate has turned against the country he fought to defend. When he asks to escort him to prison and escapes he knows that he'll go after Audrey. With the help of his former Army buddy/Best selling author Zack they'll have to search the Dark Web for the group and find out who their next target is. When the attacks start against Audrey's business, Zack's hideaway they'll have to decide who would be the next target as a team. But can they fight the attraction between them?
A extremely well written romantic suspense that will have you on the edge of your seats A perfect mix of suspense drama and romance
Audrey Jenkins is certain her boyfriend Brett a soldier is cheating on her what she finds is so much worse he is a traitor betraying his country As ex military and a patriot she has no choice but to turn him in and act as witness against him at trial. Once he is convicted it will be up to ex soldier and now CID Special Agent Cameron “Cam” Harris. he and Brett served together in the sandbox in fact Brett saved Cams life he can't believe that his friend is a traitor so out of respect he offers to be the one to take him to prison That earns him a mild concussion when his friend escapes Cam is determined that he will bring him back in and he is sure the first place he will head is to get revenge on Audrey so that is where he will wait. The only problem is the huge attraction between Audrey and Cam Can they both survive will Brett be bought to justice and can they have a future together You will have to read to see
Audrey Jenkins has a new life outside or the Army. Since her devastating failure cost so many lives there was no way she would stay. Her bad choices followed her into her personal life, now she's giving evidence against her ex in a court martial.
Our heroine has suffered a blow to her self-confidence, but is still a strong and brave soldier at heart.
CID Special Agent Cam Harris wanted to give his friend the benefit of the doubt. That turns out to be the biggest mistake of his career.
Our hero is strong sexy and honourable, everything you could possibly want in a hero.
Although we know the villain from the start it doesn't help to foil the plot.
This is an action packed romantic suspense full of danger and intrigue. Our characters have to foil a terrorist plot and don't know who to trust.
A very exciting story that will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through.
The action in this book was non-stop. From beginning to end the story moved along at quite a rapid pace and before I knew it, it was over.
The prologue introduces us to the hero and antagonist who are serving in Kandahar at the time. Barely escaping an ambush Cam is rescued by Brent as they flee the area.
A few years later Brett is being taken away, yelling threats at his ex-girlfriend, ex-soldier Audrey Jenkins, who turned him in for selling information to an unknown entity. Cam asks to transfer his old friend, who escapes from his custody.
Audrey left the military after a failed mission, that left her questioning her ability to read people, the very thing she needed for her job. Not to mention how did she miss Brett and his odd behaviour before discovering his secret.
Now Cam turns to Audrey fearing her ex will make good on his threats and hoping she'll have some insights into what Brett has planned next.
Zone of Action is certainly the correct title for this new romantic/suspense thriller from Cathy Skendrovich. The action is non-stop from the prologue to the final page. Cameron and Audrey feel sparks fly across a room before they actually meet, and when they need to pool their skills to try to stop a terrorist, who happens to be Cameron’s friend and Audrey’s ex-boyfriend, the tension builds. The writing style contributes immensely to the tone of the story. Word choices are right on target, dialogue flows well, characters are three dimensional and setting descriptions make the reader feel a part of it all. In addition to all that, flashes of subtle humor provide just the right sparkle that makes this reader smile. The balance of intrigue, action and romance make this an engrossing, enjoyable read that I could not put down until the surprising end.
Wow! Hold on tight - this is a fast moving book with lots of action and romance! I loved the characters and how their pasts influenced their current circumstances. Audrey left her high pressure Army job and became a florist, while Cam left his Army position to become a CID investigator. When they are thrown together, they are soon fighting for their lives as circumstances get crazy and a man from their past wrecks havoc on their lives.
If you enjoy the genre, you will love this book. This is the beginning of a new series, so while this is a complete book with a satisfying ending, it does set up the next book. The author is on my must read authors' list.
This was a action packed military romance. I liked Cam and Audrey. They’re both strong and confident in most scenarios, but have those insecurities that were caused by what they felt were personal and professional failures.
Cam and Brett were soldiers together and Brett saved Cam’s life. Brett and Audrey were dating until she caught him giving troop information to terrorists and turned him in. Brett escaped custody and now Audrey and Cam have to work together to find him and the group he’s working for.
A lot of this book is unrealistic, but it’s enjoyable and kept me reading. Stopping break ins, terror plots and assassinations, getting shot and almost killed - this book was nonstop.
Zone of Action is just that - full of action! Audrey, a retired terror cell expert, and Cam, a CID Special Agent have great chemistry, but they meet each other at the worst possible situation. He's tracking down her ex, who escaped his custody after she turned him in for selling US military secrets. Together they uncover a terrorist plot, to attack US soldiers.
This story was filled with excitement, suspense, unexpected twists, and a great slow-burn romance. If you're a fan of romantic suspense and military romance - and even if you don't think you are! - this is an engaging, read that I highly recommend!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This one caught my attention because of what it promised was inside. Audrey is a character that has spunk and spice with it grabbing your attention. She also thinks she is going to go to simple but if this turns out to be that I wonder what she thinks is hard. Cam is also another character that has our eyes and attention but also the alpha he is helps. Trouble is abound and when it lands it brings these two together. When it starts hitting she knows who is doing it so together they slay. Heat is going up on all levels but to enjoy some of it they have to live which is what we want at the end so together we stick to see where this lands.
Zone of Action by Cathy Skendrovich presents the story of Cam and Audrey. Audrey is a former soldier, and Cam is an army special. They got together while fighting Brett, Audrey's ex and Cam ex-bestfriend. The story was pretty nice, but a bit too heavy for one book. I feel like it could have been cut in two, and more explained. I just found it hard to follow it and understand everything. It was happening too fast, but too slow at the same time. The characters are pretty great. I loved Audrey. She's a strong women, but also knows when to let someone in her heart, even if she was hurt many times over the years. The writing was pretty great too. I liked this book and I'm giving it 4 stars!
Every once in a while a book comes along with writing so sharp, description so vivid, and non-stop action that it you feel like you're watching a movie rather than reading. Zone of Action is such a book. From page 1 you are pulled in by compelling protagonists, antagonists so evil they can't get their comeuppance soon enough. Edge of your seat, hold your breath action and a slow burn romance that will melt your heart. I can't wait for book 2.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/Netgalley in exchange for a review.
Real and Vivid. I liked the way that Cathy Skendrovich wove her tale.
Characterization was huge in this novel. The characters were all very well developed and had their own motivations and faults. It made them seem more real to me as the reader.
I also really liked the flow of this novel. It felt very smooth.
A Romantic Suspense novel that really delivers the mystery and surprises while bringing swoon worthy romance!
Cam listens to his gut and that’s saved his ass more times than he can count, but bad things happen when he doesn’t listen, it’s what makes him such a great soldier. Audrey is a no nonsense ex-military woman who is just trying to focus on moving forward. The two of them have one thing in common and it’s not a good thing and neither of them can believe what’s happened.
This was loaded with plenty of action & yes some of that was steamy action 😉
This is fast paced, action packed book full of intrigue, danger, and steamy scenes. We follow Audrey, a past soldier that tracked down and turned terrorists, after she turns in her ex boyfriend for selling military secrets. Cameron, once a good friend of Audrey’s ex, Zack, requests the duty to bring him to prison. After Zack escapes, Cameron goes to Audrey to protect her and try and figure out why his former friend would sell secrets when he was such a good soldier. Thrust together and battling mounting attacks they are in a race to uncover the truth. Along the way they come to respect and care for each other. This book starts as a slow burn and then rapidly picks up pace. The military knowledge of the author is evident and makes things seem that much more real, which I really appreciated. I raced through this book and loved all the hot panty melting scenes as well as the strong heroine that could take care of herself and was able to use her past experience and expertise to solve the mystery. Very well done.
