This is sixth in an Urban Fantasy series where plot and character elements span volumes. I recommend reading in order.

While you know what you're getting by now, this book acts as a good stopping point for the series. A lot of important arcs come to satisfactory conclusions by the end and are very well done, I'll say. So I'll have even less to say about this one than usual. The plot is fast, the events satisfying, and I was eagerly engaged for the entire story.

Even though this would be a good stopping point (and the author indicates it might be at the end), there are plenty of opportunities for an author as talented as Buroker to continue and I'd totally be down with that if she decided to go there. Val's family remains largely an enigma, and you can see that Freysha has some interesting depth to her. Not to mention that dragon politics are obviously convoluted and the whole "send a dragon delegation to 'legitimize' Earth government and bring it into the Celestial Courts" is almost as interesting a potential plot as "Earth as potential Celestial Tortuga".

So this is a solid five stars and I'm sad to see it (possibly) over, even though I'm completely satisfied with it as a whole.

A note about Steamy: One of the things that culminated satisfactorily is Zav and Val's relationship. Including a single explicit sex scene that puts this on the light end of my steam tolerance. I'm a little torn about this, even though it was very well-done. On the one hand, the series has been fairly chaste to this point, so the departure might jar some readers who came to count on that aspect of the series. On the other, it was about time and the power/intimacy dynamic between these two characters is important to their long-term viability as a relationship so seeing it play out, at least in part, was kind of important.

This entire series has been a wild ride, filled with elves and shape-shifting dragons and a half-elf, half-human assassin doing her best to protect Seattle with her magical tiger by her side. The author writes with her signature humor that had me laughing out loud.

Zav and Val finally get the beginning of the happy ending that has been building through this series. The fight is tough, the stakes higher, in this book. The fate of all the realms rests on Val's shoulders.

While this is currently the last book, I would definitely keep reading anything more this author decides to write about these characters. There are still lingering questions that I would love to see answered!

Another great addition to this series! There is some major movement in the relationship and even in the plot! I have no idea where this story is going to go now-- are there any loose threads hanging around that I've forgotten about?! Perhaps we will enter a new arc or get a new enemy.
It is fantastic how through the series, we see Val's life changing and adapting with the friends she makes. She isn't stagnant, always in the same place, doing the same thing. It really helps make her and the other characters feel more realistic.

Storm Forged is book six in the Death Before Dragons series by Lindsay Buroker.

I had a blast reading this one. Storm Forged wraps up the over all story arc for this series.

Val finds herself in another predicament. She can’t say no to helping out Nin’s long lost grandfather. I enjoyed the mystery and reveals in this novel. We get twists and turns, plus some drama. Val handles it all with grace and maturity.

It’s been a journey for Val and I liked seeing her develop and change throughout the series. She finally finds someone to open up to. We see her strengths develop like her learn to use her magic and her sword work improving. We’ve also seen her improve her reputation in the supernatural world.

I was happy with Val and Zav’s relationship in this book. They are finally in a good spot together and they overcame the last of the barriers and secrets between them. I like that they finally cement their relationship.

Zav has learned a lot about humans and he appreciates Val, but he’s still his arrogant dragon self. I liked seeing him grow.

Storm Forged was a great read! We got to see Val end up with a family that likes and loves her as she is and we get to meet so many wonderful characters plus its full of action-packed adventure. Fans of Urban Fantasy will enjoy this series.

Another great entry in the death before dragons series. While this book is readable on its own it works best as part of the series. The author calls this a stopping point for the series but there is so much potential for more in this world.
Here's hoping for more.

So fun

This is such a fun, snarky series - with magic, mayhem and just the right amount of danger. And it’s finished too! 🤗

Best book in the series so far. I was excited to get a bigger glimpse into the world of dragon "politics," and it was so heartwarming to see Val surrounded by her decidedly odd but endearing group of friends and family.

Would love to see Val explore her magic a bit more and travel to other worlds. Maybe she and Zav can take their law enforcement gig on the road.

Great climax to the overall arc that was running through the background of the last 5 books. The dragon issues have come to a head and something has to give. It is edge-of-the-seat action and excitement with a whole lot of heart! I do feel there is a treasure trove of storylines still aching to be explored, though, such as her relationship with the elves, and the power she holds. Also, the sword and it’s powers (I can’t understand why she never pursued any of these things more). So, hopefully we’ll get more in books to come.

The one thing that really stands out in this series and makes it rise above the rest (at least for me), however, is the wonderful humor and banter. I know I’ve mentioned it repeatedly but it is so rare to find books where sarcastic remarks aren’t cutting and often borderline cruel while attempting to be funny. Ms. Buroker has this amazing gift that brings humor with a bit of sarcasm into the character’s conversations without making them sound rude. They are just funny! And they are most often done in passing, which makes it even more delightful.

SO.. if one enjoys a great escape with all kinds of action, characters that burrow into the heart, along with humor that makes one smile… a lot… I would highly recommend this series.

We got progress of the kind I like. The cover is still a stretch to get over but the book and the series is good. The sarcasm is better.

P.s. it's an altogether 4 pointer series for me.

I loved this installment, most of the gang made an appearance, we had movement on the Val and Zav front and some of the plots were wrapped up. I have enjoyed every book in this series so I sincerely hope that there is more to come

I love most of Buroker’s series and this one has been a lot of fun. The first book started slow but the rest of the series kept things moving at a much better pace. I know this is the end of the series for now, but I’m hoping there’ll be more eventually! The mayhem of a Val/Zav wedding for the win!

Overall it’s not my top favourite series of hers, since Emperor’s Edge and Fallen Empire are just so brilliant, but the characters in those are very similar and in this series we get to see a different kind of personality. I’d say it’s my third fave series of hers.

Fun, irreverent, with genuine laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of charm.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was excellent!! Can’t say I expected anything less from this author. Filled with quite a number of heart stopping, nail biting scenes, this book ties up some loose ends nicely. Many questions are answered and conflicts are resolved satisfactorily. But I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series, “Secret of the Sword” since Val & Zav’s story continues.

I absolutely loved this one. Zav & Val are amazing, as usual. They’ve grown and bonded so much that they work like a well oiled machine, both in battle and verbal sparring. Love the secondary characters and the dynamic they create. They’re not just friends but more like a family and their antics and interactions are downright hilarious.

If I have to complain about one thing it would be that I am disappointed that this series will be ending soon. I don’t want it to end😭 But I am so happy I discovered it.

What a lovely addition to this series!! I haven't really much to say asides from that it's good. I had a great time. I know we only met him for like 1 sec but I freaking love Uncle Ston, he's the real MVP as far as I'm concerned. I hope to see him in the next 3 books because I imagine he and Val could do some magnificent bonding. In regards to this series as a whole, I realised during this one that I really wish we saw Val with some more depth. Like, I want her to open up to someone (that isn't her therapist) about her daughter, and her loneliness and her Elven family and the way her job affects her mentally - those sorts of things. We always see her joking about and being sassy and having banter and other such things, but I really wish we did get to see the other side of her sometimes.

Apologies for the tangent. All in all, this book was rather enjoyable and I look forward to see what the last 3 books have to offer.

This is far and away my favorite in this series. I have enjoyed the series the entire way through and I have spaced it out so that I could enjoy it for the longest possible time - and not get burned out.

I love Val. I love Val's assortment of friends. I love Val's heart. I love Val's mouth. There just isn't anything here I do not love.

This is the perfect culmination to the high points of the series. Well, at least it is listed as such. Personally, I think there is still much more to accomplish in this world and with these people. These books are just such FUN.

I will miss having them to go to when I am in a reading slump. I sat up all night reading this one. It is the first one in this series that has caused me that much excitement.

Really love this series.

3.5 stars.

This was a solid installment to the series. It was funny and relatively light with a simple plot and nice character development. I enjoyed the progression of the dragon plot and also the changing relationship between Val and Zav. Hopefully the author will give us another book or at least a novella featuring what their relationship looks like in the years to follow. Personally, I’d think it would be hilarious if Val got pregnant. Maybe the idea that a dragon has never been mated to a non-dragon before would be the loophole to the whole “dragons can’t impregnate non-dragon species” idea. :) And what kind of being would their kid be? So fun.

OKAY. Things are moving in the right direction for Val and Zav. Both romantically and as far as outing the Stormforge clan's enemies go. Which is awesome because there have been A LOT of obstacles thrown up between these two and they've had a rough, dangerous time of it and they deserve a little R&R.

But before the R&R, they have to resolve a whole bunch of stuff. Like the lady dragon who thinks she and Zav should hook up. Of course, he'd have to set aside Val before said hooking up and Zav is not okay with that. Or with the arrogance of the lady dragon. He's also kind of peeved at his mother since she's the one who sent the lady dragon in his direction in the first place. So, yeah, there's that.

There's also the matter of Nin's grandfather appearing with some troubling news. That news leads to them learning that things might not be as they seem and OF COURSE they need to do what they do best and try to right things. Because, you know, Val and Zav can't let injustices lie. Especially since it directly concerns Zav's family.

A little stealth, a whole lot of fighting, some subterfuge, more than a little thrilling heroics, and some smoldering looks between the dragon lord and his chosen mate. MAN, am I enjoying these two together.

This would be 5 star, I really enjoyed it. Finally, finally the romance gets somewhere, although I wouldn't have objected to a more Ruby-Lionsdrake-ed version of that scene... (If you read this Lindsay, a compilation/anthology of scenes from your books written by 'Ruby' would definitely be welcome!)
However. I had to remove a star for the suggestion that this might be the last book in the series. Even though there are still stories that need to be told - the sword, the sword! for a start. It has powers we still don't know about! And what about the elvish stuff, I'm sure there's more to know there? And what about Nin, she's gotta get her romance? And Freysha, I'm sure things must be about to happen to her that we all need to know about?
Ugh. Imagine me as Oliver Twist, hands out, "Please ma'am, can we have some more?"

So much fun

I really do love Val and the gang. This is the kind of book that just sucks you in with interesting characters, a fun story, a lot of action and more than a few laughs along the way.

The afterword threw me as it mentions that the author is stopping here for a while and my initial reaction was What?… No! Why?! 😫, but I’m sure we will at least get to see that long teased wedding. Pretty please 🥺.

Still a wonderful series if you want a series reminiscent of Kate Daniels and Mercy Thompson, but you know, with dragons.

I've said before that this author is a fun read. You have to like her brand of humor so I always recommend sampling to see if it's your cup of tea. I find these are great books to intersperse with heavier books. There is a lot of action and sarcastic wit. This book nicely wraps up many of the plots from the start. There is just enough there to warrant more books but you won't feel like you're left hanging if she stopped here. I do think she plans to revisit this series for maybe a few more.

God I love this series!!!!!

Please please keep writing more stories with these characters. Soooo glad you finally got Val and her Dragon some "love time".
I would love to have you create another story with similar sarcastic humor and quirky characters. Space alien warriors or magical scenarios ..... Don't care which. Just make sure the characters are as funny and interesting as made these. Love your writing style. Thank you for all the books.

Great as usual

Well, Val, Zav, Sindari, and the gang didn't fail to deliver another great adventure! I just can't seem to get enough of their humor, as well as the situations that Val seems to always come into! I really, really Lindsay doesn't stop here with this series! While some things were resolved, we definitely still have questions that need answered!! I definitely recommend this read!

I read the first six books over the course of a weekend, so this review is basically for all of them: This was so close to what I wanted and yet never got there. I liked Val as a character. She had strong Ilona Andrews vibes. But her motivation was always strangely amorphous. Zavryd was a condescending dick, but never seemed straddle that perfect line where the condescension becomes fun. But on the other hand, I did read six straight books...

If you like Ilona Andrews books, this is a good series for you!!

I don’t leave reviews often, but I’m hoping my two cents helps a little.

I loved this series. Very cool world building. Love the main characters and the humor. Well paced story with a fun romance thrown in. Lucky to have found this author and I’m excited to give her other series a read.

Storm Forged in the sixth book in the Death Before Dragons series and I really enjoyed this one. Storm Forged reads a bit like the last book in the series as it wraps up this story arc before introducing another one of the next three books if I understand it correctly. I liked the reveal in this book when we find out what the Silverclaw dragons are really up to and I liked seeing how Val got pulled into another adventure and a dangerous mission.

As I found a way to incorporate more audiobook listening in my schedule I got through this one in a good pace. I enjoyed seeing the story develop. The problems get introduced at the start, then turn into bigger ones and I liked seeing how Val deals with it. There's plenty of action, some intrigue and more about the familiar characters. The plot is a bit more straightforward, but I thought that worked well here and there are still plenty of obstacles on their path. The ending wraps things up well, although I would've liked a few more details and wrap up for certain points, but as the series isn't over yet that might come in future books.

It's been quite the journey for Val throughout the series and I liked seeing her develop and change throughout the series. She develops her strength and learns to use her magic and sword better, as well as learns to deal with her asthma and instead of being known as just killing the supernatural she has formed some good bonds with them and has improved her reputation. It's been really great to see this change happen.

I liked Val and Zav's relationship in this book. I finally feel they're in a good spot together and they overcome the last barriers and secrets between them in this book. I also appreciate how while they grew closer and changed they also stay the same at their core. Zav has learned a lot about humans and appreciates Val, but he's still an arrogant dragon as well. While Val understands dragons are different and understands Zav comes from a very different world, she still points out when he goes to far or does things she won't appreciate. I liked seeing them battle together and fully team up and be together in this book.

Just like the previous books I listened to this one and I really like the narrator for this series and plan to continue listening to the next 3 books as well. I like the different voices the narrator does and how she brings the book to life.

To summarize: This was another great read and it wraps up the current story arc well. The current story arc gets wrapped up with a satisfying ending while leaving room open for more stories in the series. I really liked seeing Val change and develop throughout the series, from how her strength and magic grows to seeing her reputation among the magical creatures develop. As well as seeing how her romance with Zav develops. I like how they're really a team in this book, the last barriers and secrets between them get overcome in this book and I liked seeing their relationship grow deeper. I enjoyed seeing them fight this threat as a team and work together and it's obvious how much they care about the other. There's plenty more of familiar side characters and it all made for a satisfying read. The pace is well done and the plot engaging. The narrator did an awesome job with this series and I plan to continue listening to the next books as well.

As to be expected as a series reaches the end of it's first arc climax, things get messy. Val is thrown a curve ball when a gnome shows up at her house, hounded by orcs and promptly passes out. I loved the new dynamic of this plot and it felt new and refreshing for the series.

The gang works together to figure out how to cure a bacterial infection in the blood that turns out was magically created. All the why Val is harassed by a new annoying dragon, one who is meant to become Zav's consort.

I loved we finally got to see a new world and a new way of tackling the problems. I am also very bias and had to love Walker and the fact that he 100% has to be a shifter was a great easter egg for any Aussies. Not to mention that our power couple have FINALLY started communicating and forming a *gasp* somewhat healthy relationship?!
