Once There Was A Tree

Rate this book
Tree roots, dragon claws, earth and fire… Gwenhwyfar Cronun is no longer the kick-ass warrior she used to be. All those skills evaporated the minute she was medevacked out of the Middle East. When she touched down in Eden, having lost her arm, her livelihood and her captain, she reverted back to ordinary. Ioan Sayer is ex-army. Ex because he retired to chase a dream and a woman, who’s been haunting his nights since he’d loaded her aboard medical transport. Although he finds the odds of gaining ground questionable, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to bring Gwen back to the land of the living. With Ioan in Eden, Gwen finds herself facing the fiercest adversary of her life. He won’t let her wave a white flag in surrender and is doing his best to convince her she’s still a fire-breathing dragon. Her age-old demons say otherwise. Can she fund the strength to follow her captain into hell one last time and lay siege?

This second book in the everyday goddesses series by Faith O’Shea continues the story of these friends by focusing on Gwen an ex army soldier who got wounded in Afghanistan and lost an arm. This story is so poignant and deals with childhood trauma and PTSD among other topics. But all so tastefully written. You feel Gwen’s pain and fear and her struggle to fit in and accept her friends and most of all herself. All helped by Yo her ex commander and lover who resigns his post to go join her. With his help (but not only) Gwen starts to accept herself and realises she is worth of being loved. There is so much more to this book… you just have to read it. Another excellent tale by this author.

Even if I am of the male persuasion, I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

The prime protagonist is an ex-Army soldier who lost an arm in Afghanistan.

The story deals with her PTSD from childhood abuse and the loss of her Army identity.

It isn't a tear-jerker but it is tough, and encouraging, to witness her slow opening up emotionally to others. Shadow helps a lot.

Good read for vets and others who have endured trauma
