He's always been there, whether I realized it or not.
Kai
Growing up, Izzy was the cute, geeky guy next door. He and my twin brother were inseparable, and Izzy followed River around with hearts in his eyes. Fifteen years after I last saw him, he moves in across the street and ends up as my last-minute date to River's wedding. Izzy's sweet smile wins my heart, but when we get to bed, an old secret haunts me. A stranger from video chat, an anonymous cutie who wears a costume and a mask. Could my secret online relationship really be the same man now quivering in my hands? And can I get past my shame about our history in time to be the man Izzy deserves?
The Geek Next Door is a sweet and steamy M/M romance with an HEA. It features a double wedding in the woods, a kitty costume, and geeky-cute fun. Read it as a standalone or as part of His Best Friend's Brother for maximum enjoyment!
I love this series! All the books are fun, easy to read and lighthearted. This third book is about Kai, River's twin brother from book two and Izzy, their high school best friend who moved away and they lost touch.
Just as in the other two books it's really light and filled with sweetness. This one also includes some very mild kink. And it's because of the kink that I didn't like this one as much as I liked the first two books. It didn't really fit with the story. At times I felt like I was reading two books. One where Kai and Izzy got involved romantically and one where they explored and Kai learned to accept the kink. The parts just didn't fit as well as I wish they had.
Both Kai and Izzy were great though. And I really enjoyed them as a couple.
This was very nice. It is a low angst story between childhood friends who have lost touched. They were both shy which made them cute and well matched. They communicated well and the way they discovered their secret (I'm not sure it's in the blurb so I won't say more) was very fun and sweet. There is a very mild, tame kink but one of the MC is ashamed of it and I thought this was handled well as well even though kink is not my thing so I don't have much experience dealing or reading about it so I may be wrong. There is one OTT moment but it was resolved well so no complaint. It was way better than book 2 and on par with book 1. I would recommend if you're in a mood for some fluff
The Geek Next Door is the third book in Cayden’s His Best Friend’s Brother series, and while it can be read as a standalone, I think it works best when read in order. There aren’t any through lines in the series, but the characters are all interconnected, and it adds something extra to have read them all.
Kai plays an important role in the second book, Forbidden Friend, and it’s nice to see him find love and happiness here. He’s staid and practical, introverted, and a bit shy. But he’s steady, and that’s one of the things I liked best about him. It’s one of the things that draws Izzy to him as well. He’s definitely flawed though, mostly in the way he gets all up in his head. He has certain ideas about what is and is not acceptable, and it’s hard for him to change his mind.
This is the third installment in this series, this time focusing on Kai, River’s brother and Leo’s best friend/business partner (our couple from Book 2). Kai is now the odd man out - the only single guy in his limited social group, and match-matching is afoot. Izzy, childhood friend and neighbor to River and Kai, moves into the building next door and he and River run into each other on the street outside their buildings and reconnect. Izzy is immediately drafted to be Kai’s date at the upcoming double wedding of Leo and River (book 2) and Cass and Shawn (Book 1). Kai and Izzy are already very familiar with each other from when they were kids, but they never looked at each other as anything but friends … until now. Or at least that’s what they thought.
The development of the relationship between Kai and Izzy is sweet. I really enjoyed seeing these two become a couple and progress towards their HEA. There’s the whole mistaken identity aspect of this story due to anonymous online activity between the two that I found a bit trite. The kink involved here will not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought the author did a really good job of keeping those scenes compartmentalized so you can skip through them without missing anything critical to the emotional development between Kai and Izzy. Really, the whole point of including the kink element at all is to explore Izzy and (primarily) Kai’s journey towards acceptance of their own desires and needs in the face of societal norms or expectations. It’s about being true to your internal voice rather than superimposing an unhealthy external commentary on it. I thought the author did a nice job of showing how Kai and Izzy worked through that, and how their responses were not the same but they mutually worked on communicating with each other.
One thing that bothered me, though, although not significantly, is the portrayal of Kai. In the last book, the primary driver of the plot was the need to keep River and Leo’s relationship a secret from Kai because Kai “forbid” them from being together. Kai’s ultimatum and ensuing reaction when River and Leo were inevitably discovered is at odds with Kai’s own 10 year secret online relationship with his mystery “cutie”/Izzy. That hypocrisy sat with me until much later in the book when you start to understand more about Kai and how he imposes rules on everything and everyone, including himself, to maintain control. Then, the decade-long secret online “kink” is understandable as Kai’s one release valve for the pressure cooker of a life he’s created. But until that point, it just irked me.
Of the three books in this series, this was my least favorite, but I still recommend it as a light, easy read. You can pick this up even if you haven’t read the other books in the series, although I think you’ll like it much more if you do read the others first. This book prominently features the main characters from the early books and seeing glimpses of those couples’ lives is actually one of the best parts of this book.
* I received an advanced reader copy of this book, but there was no obligation to review. This review is provided voluntarily and reflects my honest opinions and views.
3.5 This book was ok. Wasn’t as great as the other two, but ok. We get to see two people who knew each other since they were younger fight insecurities in order to find love. Wringing was ok, smexy was good though if dressing up in Halloween outfits isn’t you jam this may not be for you. The side characters where cool because they were past mcs.
I loved that this book had no bs drama and even though it was a quick read it was packed with love and oh so steamy scenes! I LOVED this series! All book were amazing. This was definitely a great book to end a series with!
After meeting Kai in the previous His Best Friend's Brother novel, I was excited to delve a little deeper into him. I was excited to see what made him tick and what he was like when he wasn't trying to keep his brother and best friend from dating.
And what we found was that in his own world, Kai is pretty controlled. He believes in things fitting within their little boxes and doesn't do well when they don't. This shapes his character and his relationship with Izzy.
So let's dive in. First, our mains. We have Kai, the partner of a PR firm and a man who firmly believes that everything needs to be just so in order to exist. He holds himself, his business, and his life to an incredibly high standard. He also has what he considers to be a shameful secret: for ten years, he's been getting off with a stranger on the internet. Izzy is a shy guy who gets online in costume, starting due to seeking some form of validation and staying because he met a guy there. They get online a few nights a week and they chat - all on text - but never share any details about their lives. Offline, Izzy and Kai have a shared history too. Fifteen years ago, they were neighbors and Izzy had a crush on Kai's twin brother, River.
Their paths collide again when Izzy moves into the building across from Kai. The two men reunite while attending a double wedding for Cass and Shawn (book one) and River and Leo (book two). The attraction between them is immediate. Eventually (as in very early in the book), they realize that they have been chatting for ten years online. They know one another incredibly well because of it. They start to date and really begin to fall for one another.
The best thing about this book is that a lot of it is very low stakes. The biggest problems in their relationship are them. Kai's rigidity doesn't always mesh with Izzy's personality and the fact that Kai is so deeply ashamed of the fact that he got off on Izzy in costume for a decade? Well it provides a hinderance and a hurdle for them to get over.
This book is low angst and high steam. Probably not my favorite of the series, but a strong showing.

This series is a combination of binge-reading R. Cayden's other work as well as another recommendation from an Amazon email. The series: His Best Friend's Brother. The third book is titled "The Geek Next Door".

I don't have a full-lengthen, thought-out, sounds pretty review for you today. Just a lot of strung-together words that are semi-related to the book's plot. So..yeah... I didn't think that internalized-kink-shaming was a thing, but like it makes sense.
I like how these books in this series are all inter-connected, but at the same time, it's a little confusing (the first book has character A (Cass) and character B (Shawn) in a relationship, with character C (Leo) as character Bs brother--the second book has character C (Leo) and character D (River) in a relationship, with character E (Kai) as character D's brother--the third book has character E (Kai) and character F (Izzy) in a relationship, with character D (River) as character E's brother). Like having to sketch out a family/character tree confusion. And now that I've spelled character that many times and it no longer looks like a word... #fallingforthegeek #forbiddenfriend #thegeeknextdoor #sharedsecrets #fallingfortrouble #hisbestfriendsbrother #hisbestfriendsbrotherseries #rcayden #books #queerbooks #queererotica #bodicerippers #bookstagram #bookphotography #ilovebooks
I haven't read the other books in this series, but I never felt lost or like I was missing anything in this sweet love story. Izzy and Kai's secret internet relationship played a much bigger role in this book than I was expecting, but thankfully the author didn't draw out the mistaken-identity theme for too long. I'll admit that I still don't fully understand the appeal of costumes and onesies, but it was interesting for me to see how Izzy and Kai reacted to each other when they played that way. I could definitely feel their chemistry and the fun they had together, and there was something unexpectedly cute about them roleplaying. The internalized shame and anxiety both men felt about their secret was so relatable to me, and I loved seeing how they gained confidence in their desires and embraced what they enjoyed as the story went on.
Outside of the costumes, this was a pretty standard romance with all the elements I enjoy: surprise meet-cute, unexpected bed-sharing, and plenty of get-to-know-you conversations. Because there wasn't much going on in this book besides the romance, it was pretty obvious to me that the main source of conflict was going to be whenever Izzy and Kai's secret desires got exposed. I felt like the whole time their relationship was building I was just waiting for this bomb to go off, but when it did I was pleasantly surprised by how supportive all the characters were. This is one of those rare stories where not a single character turns villainous and hateful, and it was refreshing to see the main characters have to grapple with their internal fears instead of facing an external threat.

3.5 stars I hadn't read the previous books in this series so I'd read this as a standalone story. A good start as I unraveled who was who in the storyline. A great setup by freinds for friends as Kai and Izzy are pushed together as a date for a wedding. A nice written story as they catch up and get to know each other again. I loved the scenes when the secret is revealed and what happens next. A good ending for a HEA, told with both POVs. Includes a time jump to the wedding, cabin settings, reunion of old friends, chemistry between them, sexy scenes and more.
Izzy 30 yrs has just moved into his apartment and had a past secret involing costumes and caming. An online friend, OkayOkai followed him for the years. Kai was friends with Leo who'd be marrying Kai's twin soon. All lived in the same condo complex.
This is a neighbours / twin brother’s best friend romance, featuring Kai and Izzy, and is book three in the His Best Friend’s Brother series.
Kai reconnects with his childhood neighbour Izzy when he moves back and becomes his date to this twin’s wedding. But when Kai realises Izzy might be the mystery guy he watches online, he has to face the past to see if they can be together.
This was a really cute story. I liked the mix of childhood neighbours and the fun online twist. Kai and Izzy had great chemistry, and the wedding setting with only one bed made me smile. Love a forced proximity.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 3 in series MM romance Neighbours Twin brother’s best friend Secret camboy Date for wedding Forced proximity Only one bed Spicy times Secret revealed Costumes in the bedroom Insta photo mishap HEA
I received this book free from GRR in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book. It is the third book of this series but not having read the first two did not cause any confusion. The main characters from the previous books were in this story which helped the flow. There was some shyness, embarrassment and joy throughout the book. River was a friend and secret crush of Izzy for the years they lived next door to each other as teenagers. Now, as grown men, they meet again when Izzy moves in across the street. Just as River is about to marry Leo. When Rivers twin brother, Kia, offers to partner Izzy to the wedding, Izzy readily accepts. They both have a good time and even share a kiss. But both men have a secret they are not sure the other would understand.
I have to admit that Kai was not a favorite character from the earlier books where he just seemed intent on telling other people how to live and judging them harshly if they didn't follow his plan for them. In this book, however, we find out what has really been going on with him for his entire adult life and like us, he realizes where his previous behavior comes from and learns to be true to himself. I felt sorry for Izzy initially, in some things he had to put up with while Kai got himself sorted, but actually, that could have never happened without Izzy and in the end they make a wonderful, mutually supportive couple that I was totally happy to see get together. This was a great afternoon read that left me feeling happy and sunny along with today's weather.
Izzy is a shy man who can really only let go online with his mystery man, and Kai is a man who needs everything to be perfect unless he’s online with his costume cutie.
Izzy & Kai were friends 15 years ago and after meeting up again they start to realize they were always meant to be more than that.
When they realize they our each other’s mystery online friend can they make it work.
Their story is absolutely adorable and sweet. This is the first book in the series I’ve read but I am going to go and read the previous ones right away!
I was given a free copy of this book to leave an honest review.
This book is the third in a series and it was just as good as the previous installments. Kai and Izzy grew up together but have lost contact over the past 15 years. It was interesting to see how the characters picked up after so long apart. There was a familiarity between the two that was a little more significant than was first let on. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting Leo, River, Cass, and Shawn from the previous books. They were the catalyst that got Kai and Izzy in a personal setting, and once that match was lit....it took off! Super hot chemistry and fun interactions kept me turning the pages. Another great book by R. Cayden.
The Geek Next Door by R Cayden is a M/M romance and third book 8n tge His Best Friend's Brother series. I love the surprises within these pages, the unfolding of events and the connection between Kai and Izzy. Its a childhood friends brother turns to lover story with very little angst, a touch of humor, and a lot of sweetness, steam and love. I loved the story and characters and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a happy romance that has just the right amount of spice.
☆I was able to read an advanced copy of this title and am reviewing voluntarily and honestly my own thoughts, opinion and reactions based on that copy.☆
Izzy was a childhood friend of River and Kai’s, but lost touch when Izzy and his father moved away. When River reconnects with Izzy, he invites him to his and Leo’s wedding and be Kai’s date for the wedding. Izzy is shy and geeky, Kai is an introvert of sorts, very private. They have an instant connection and want to continue to get to know each other more. I loved their connection. This story had so many emotions and so much heat and steam. It was sooo good!! I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received from Gay Romance Reviews. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
This is the third book in a series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I didn't feel lost or like I was missing anything having only read this book. I did struggle with the characters for a bit and the kink of roleplaying with costumes and onesies was definitely a surprise, but whatever floats their boat. No kink shaming here. I just didn't really get anything from the story. I read it, it was okay. I didn't hate, but I didn't necessarily love it either. Sometimes I just don't vibe with the characters and their story, and that was the case here.
What's good: the relationship is sweet and respectful and I really saw why these two lovers got together and stayed together. I also jumped into the series at this, the third book (I know, I know...) and the author did a great job of making the novel work as a stand-alone even though the couples from the previous books in and out of this one.
What's not: I couldn't tell the two characters' voices apart! I had to keep going back to figure out whether I was reading Kai or Izzy at the moment, and that pulled me out of the plot. I'm going to try another book in the series and see if the problem persists.
This was pretty much a low key cute self acceptance but not in the way you'd think read. I loved the couple together and watching them navigate their "reunion" (not as a couple) and the surprise that they hadn't been as out of contact as they thought. I really appreciate that Kai put the pieces together fairly quickly and that it wasn't kept a secret. I also just like what made him connect the dots, it's refreshing in a way. Their...."shared secret" was interesting and I hate that it was made public. I felt so bad for Kai and Izzy, but more Kai since he struggled with it more. I really enjoy this series.
A story about what a small world it is sometimes. Kai has an ongoing online relationship complete with costumes that has been going on for years now. The two have never seen each other's faces even though they have gotten to know each other well just with the masks. Enter Izzy who used to live next door 15 years ago. Izzy just so happens to be currently living across the street from Kai. The two run into each other and start spending time together. They find themselves attracted to each other and soon it becomes more. Then Kai starts to recognize things that seem to be familiar. Could Izzy be his online relationship? Such a great book. Couldn't put it down. I highly recommend.
Very sweet story. Izzy and Kai lived next door to each other when they were in junior high and lost touch after Izzy moved away. When Izzy moves into a new apartment he never expected to be living across the street from Kai and his twin brother. I think it was great how Kai and Izzy’s relationship grew from reconnecting and a remembered past. It was great that their story showed that life and relationships can be easy and comfortable even with ups and downs.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
Great story in this wonderful series. Very well written with a storyline that will captivate you and flows very smoothly with wonderful characters. Kai and Izzy have known each other since they were kids but now start to see each other as more than friends when they're paired up as dates to a double wedding. They have great chemistry and an unknown connection that is a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed watching these two sweetly journey towards their HEA. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
This is a very sweet story of childhood friends reunited and falling in love. It also has the fun aspect of neither of them knowing at first that they've been involved with each other for years online. This whole series has been great, and as much as I've loved each book, it's good that each one can easily be read as a standalone.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily gave my honest review.
This book Is amazing! Izzy and Kai' s story is full of heartwarming moments, romance and hot scenes and even a little kink that made everything more spicy. I enjoyed a lot how they got together in the middle of a wedding and with all the meddling of some of the characters from the previous 2 books. Even if the book can be read as standalone I strongly recommend to read it in order to fully understand the dynamic of the characters. Wonderful reading!
You know how some books just make you wanna shake the MCs because they won't fucking communicate? This series is for you. Like, their totally open about their feelings the whole time and theres only very light drama. It's super cutesy and you probably have to be in the right mood to appreciate a light, mushy romance like this. Each book is better than the last. I liked this one's message about sex positivity and shaming, it went a little deeper than the others.
My least favourite of the books; not because of the story or the fact that the main character Kai is not very nice but because the editing issues were just rampant in this book to the point that I had to put my kindle down and walk away!
The story is fine, the characters are ok for the story, there's a HEA to make everyone happy!
