The In-Between Place: Where Jesus Changes Your Story

Rate this book
Jesus' journey to the woman at the well in Samaria offers insights and hope for women today to make peace with the past, find hope in the present, and step into the future. God wants us to move toward the goodness He has planned for us. But what do we do when challenges stop our forward momentum? What's the next step when we fall into a pit of despair with the determination knocked right out of us? On his way from Judea to Galilee, Jesus traveled through Samaria, a broken place everyone knew to avoid. In Samaria he stopped in Shechem, where evil had gained such a foothold of power that it eventually reigned. Yet the place once condemned as somewhere no one wanted to visit―let alone hang out in for a while―was the location of one Samaritan woman's most hope-filled encounter with the Savior. The In-Between Place offers deeply important insights to anyone who feels stuck and can't see a way forward. It is for the person who feels that if she looks left, her face will be scraped by an immovable boulder, and if she looks right, she'll see nothing but hard to handle. It's for the person who feels lost and is not sure she is worth the effort to be found, for the person who feels overlooked and unfulfilled. Because sometimes Jesus saves our greatest spiritual breakthroughs for our in-between places.

Another great work from Kat Armstrong. This book delivers on multiple levels:

First on the theme of “in-between spaces.” This book is a great reflection and guide for what it means to find yourself in that liminal space between where you were and where you are going. If you are feeling “stuck,” this book has some great things to offer. I am not even directly a part of Armstrong’s key audience (who I believe would generally be women), but I found a lot of good things in here.

Second, the reflections surrounding the woman at the well (John 4) were engaging and thoughtful. When it comes to this particular story in the Gospels, I can be unnervingly picky and hard to please, but Armstrong didn’t fall into the expected theological tropes on either side of the exegetical spectrum and the conversation spurred me onward.

Lastly, this book was historically and exegetically engaging. I learned new things in this read, historically speaking, biblically thinking. Armstrong’s gifts as a Bible teacher were strong in this book and I was taking good notes. She made observations and connections that I had never considered — and I loved it.

In her second book, Kat Armstrong proves two things about herself: first, she is a lover of and diligent student of God's Word; second, she is a keen mentor and friend to 21st century women who want to grow in their relationship with Jesus. Across the book, Armstrong majors on typological and thematic elements that run though Scripture. Her expositions related to Dinah & the Samaritan woman's stories ("Jesus is better than Jacob in every respect") and Moses & the Samaritan woman's stories ("Now that Jesus was there, the awaited Messiah, she wasn't waiting on Moses. She was a Moses.") reignited my admiration for the literary genius of the Bible. God - the Divine Author - uses similarity and contrast to make grand theological points, revealing overarching thematic integrity as well as the centrality of Jesus' superiority to all other biblical characters. Armstrong also helpfully reorients our interpretation of the Samaritan woman with historical and theological facts related to the 1st century AD. And, then, to close each chapter, she leaves readers with reflection questions to apply these beautiful literary units of redemption to women's lives today. It's a consummate read - theological, biblical, and practical.

Somewhere between grief and joy, we find ourselves in in between places. Between feeling like too much and not enough. Between heartache and healing. This book meets you there. Kat has a way of making scripture come alive and brings some interesting personal perspectives from her own walk. This book made me feel seen and known in a season of transition and big question marks. I would encourage anyone who is in the in betweens of life to read this book!

Kat is one of those writers whose excitement and love for Jesus and the scriptures jumps off the page. The In-Between Place is filled with wisdom and brilliant insights. It was a timely read for me in the middle of ALL. THE. THINGS. (*waves hands around*). I'm grateful for Kat's witness to believers through her writing, message, and her faithful actions.

Her book is just as I know her to be on social media; the author is a great encourager. Weaving her story in with shepherding words for her readers, Armstrong walks us through the story of the woman at the well in John 4. Readers can walk away with renewed hope in God, who is still at work among us.

This book was almost like a Bible study so I wish I had read the hard copy instead of listened to the audiobook because I learn better in written form. A large portion of the book talked about the Samaritan woman from the Bible, and she had a lot of helpful/unique insights and perspectives on it.

When you feel like you're in the hallway, unable to see which door you have next to walk through and the door you walked through to get to the hallway is long gone, you might feel confused, hurt, frustrated and alone. That's the in-between place. That place where purpose seems put on hold, where you feel like you're suspended in motion and nothing makes sense. This book takes you on the purpose behind the in-between place and I can't recommend it enough. I've been in a season of being in-between for a couple of years now. I'm sure seasons aren't really supposed to last that long, but for me, it has. It's been a long, desert journey and I'm ready to stop being in this place. But I'm grateful to have read this book because it's encouraged me to find purpose in the season I'm at. I hope it does for those who read it too. I suggest this book for anyone who is going through this season.

When was the last time you were in an "in-between place?" You know, the moments when one big thing has ended and the next big thing hasn't happened? Times of change, loss, suffering, transition. We've all faced those. And those in-between places bring up a lot of emotion, of fear, of challenge. We don't know how long it will take before they're over and things change. And how do we get through them? We might try to power through in our own strength; or ignore them; or try to fill the spaces with something else while we wait.

What we can forget, and that Kat Armstrong reminds us in her lovely new book, is that Jesus is there and that He is willing to fill us, strengthen us, and enable us to walk through the in-between places. Using Jesus' meeting with the Samarian woman at the well in John 4, and the events of others in Scripture, Kat describes how we can find hope in challenging times, make peace with the pain of our own pasts, and move confidently toward our futures.

I loved Kat's teaching on Sychar/Shechem, on Jacob and Dinah, Abraham, Moses, and how they contrast with Jesus and the way He interacts with and cares for people. As we are all in a sort of in-between place as we wait for COVID-19 to be over and for life to become more normal (whatever that is) again, this book is the perfect read at the perfect time. The Lord has really been speaking to me lately through the written word, and one of those books is The In-Between Place by Kat Armstrong. I have heard the story of the Samaritan woman in John 4 many times in my years as a Christian, but Kat gives a fresh perspective to a tale that is so easily overlooked, diving deeper into the text, and showing us that Jesus can change us no matter where we are, or where we've been.

From the first page you can feel Kat's passion for this message. She has went through her own excruciating in-between places, and shares her heart, her witnessing is so encouraging for those of us that are currently in in-between places. An in-between place can be any place that you feel stuck, where nothing makes sense, or when life and circumstances are so hard, and there is nothing you can do. In my mind I envision it to be when you feel like you're "stuck between a rock and a hard place." You are in-between.

For me, The In-Between Place was a light at the end of the tunnel, a beacon of hope and encouragement, and a great reminder that God has been with me through it all, and continues to give me strength as I go through the trails of life. It's time to make peace with your past, have undeniable hope in the present, and the strength and power to finish strong in the future.

This is a wonderful resource, and is actually meant to be studied as a group, thus making it perfect for Bible studies or classes, and is such a needed resource since we can all agree the pandemic is an in-between place all its own! Grab a copy of this book and get that encouragement we all need, have hope and faith, and be reminded that Jesus is always with us in our in-between places.

Life for so many has been at a "Stand Still" for the past year. Many
times in life, we all seem to "get stuck". Kat Armstrong calls this
"The In-Between Place".

We know we need to get ourselves moving forward and "out of
the rut", sometimes though it is a struggle. Kat Armstrong has been
at "The In-Between Place" herself and this book is her story of
her struggles. Kat Armstrong tells how the Samaritan woman who
had lost all hope, but gained it all back when meeting Jesus at the well.
Kat Armstrong shows us how to come up out of "Rut" by leaning on
Jesus. We all feel that we can tackle "Ruts" on our own, but in reality
many times we really need the hope of Jesus to give us the strength
and hope we need to move forward in life.

I really was encouraged by this book. I have anxiety issues year
round and in the Winter months, Seasonal Affective Disorder. I have
many "ruts", but this book really spoke to me. I especially like the
discussion questions at the end of each chapter. A VERY Thought
Provoking book and encouraging book. I highly recommend this to
any woman is "Stuck" in that "In Between Place" in life!

I've read the story of the Samaritan woman at the well many times but this new book has given me a deeper understanding of John 4. The In-Between Place reminded me that this woman who had been judged by so many and cast aside was actually a woman whose life had been altered by tragic circumstances. She was in an "in-between place', a place that certainly wasn't where she had hoped to be. Suddenly, a man who knew all about her, who seemed to understand her as no one ever had, was talking to her! He was telling her about His gift of living water and giving her a glimpse of what her life could become. Is it any wonder that she dropped her heavy water jug and ran to town to urge the people to come see this man?

Author Kat Armstrong encourages us to be like this Samaritan woman who was so anxious to tell others about Jesus and His living water. We women today also carry heavy water jugs: balancing our jobs and family, taking care of our physical health, and perhaps problems in our personal relationships. Are these water jugs weighing us down and keeping us from enjoying what He has given us? Do they prevent us from sharing the promise of God's Grace and Jesus's living water with others?

The In-Between Place is enlightening, encouraging, and inspiring, and it is a book to read, absorb, and share with others. I believe that it would be a choice for a Women's Bible Study group.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher but there was no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

This time in our world, the right now, the 2020, 2021 – this period of “history” (it will one day be) is a tough time. Many are being affected by unexpected loss, illness and more. This is on top of the normal day to day struggles. It is no wonder so many people are wondering if this is all these is.

Kat Armstrong is a woman who is not afraid to dive into tough topics like this and help us navigate to a better, healthier place.
When we are wondering if there is more, and we look to media, news, friends to answer that for us, we are looking in the wrong place. Instead, Kat reminds us to go back to the source of all truth : God’s word.
In the In-between Places, Kat Armstrong leads the reader on a journey to first make peace with their past, then Find hope in the present. and finally Step Confidently into their future. These three steps are critical to being able to deal with past hurts, before embracing exactly where you are.
This book is a fantastic tool no matter where you are right now. No matter what, there is an area of your life that is an “in-between place” that you can apply these steps to and really find healing.

If you have ever found yourself “stuck” in life, you need to read this book. Kat dives fearlessly into the story in John 4, Jesus and the Woman at the Well, and uses it to remind us that Jesus will always meet us where we are. This book illustrates how there is no person, no situation, that is too “messy,” or too “unreedemable” for our Savior, and encourages us all to ask the hard questions in order to walk forward boldly in the Truth.

I really love Kat’s connection of this text to others with parallels in the Bible. We revisit stories of Jacob, Moses, Mary of Bethesda, Mary Magdalene, and many others, to remember that our God is intentional, and is always meeting us in the in-between places to walk with us in love.

This book is for ANY WOMAN. I've been so intrigued and uplifted with every chapter. I love how Kat illustrates the story of the Samaritan woman from John 4 and relates it so beautifully to our lives. We are bound to face hardship, regret, and disappointment throughout our lives and Kat's words meet us there and remind us we are exactly where we need to be. We have peace, comfort, and the fullest life right now, today if we choose to see it and fight for it. Kat helps us to practically embrace our circumstances with joy knowing God is with us and for us. What more could we need or want? Thank you for your heart, Kat. This book is changing my life!

Kat expertly and lovingly weaves together a narrative that is equal parts pastoral, encouraging, and is exegetical, illuminating teaching. As a woman working in ministry in the "in between" transition place from 2020 to 2021, I couldn't help but feel like certain parts were solely written for me. The way Kat brings light and depth to the teaching of the woman at the well has been absolutely groundbreaking for me...my words on the book to everyone I know have essentially been that if you are a woman, or you ever interact with women, you will be edified by this book. Do yourself a favor and read it! <3

This book is definitely one that is needed right now! Most of us are at an in-between place. Kat does an amazing job of bringing the story of the Samaritan woman for a present day woman to relate to. Kat takes the readers through making peace with their pasts, finding hope in the present and stepping confidently into their futures. She also does a summary at the end of the three sections with some vital takeaways. This book will speak to the hearts and minds of every woman who picks it up. I recommend it for every woman who needs to move on and move forward into what God has for them.

Kat Armstrong does an amazing job of writing a book suitable for women of today. Everyone deals with time of being in the “in between” and needs to be able to deal with it. When things seem to be falling apart, turning to Jesus brings the peace and relief people need.

She shows her heart for the Lord through the pages of this book. Truly it is one that brings hope, joy, and peace to the readers. So check out this book for yourself.

Kat’s writing always gets me...and this book is no different! I love how Kat recounts the intentional journey of Jesus to meet the Samaritan woman at the well. It is a beautiful account of how Jesus sees us as women and meets us where we are...in the in between places of our lives. I truly needed this message of hope in the midst of one of the hardest seasons of my life. Kat’s words have been a gift my soul deeply needed.

Maybe this year has felt entirely like an in between place, or maybe years of your life have felt in between. Kat reminds us that Jesus is in all of it, from a quick transition to the next season to a transition that may take years and years. I’ve been in both. He is faithful. Through Kat’s words you’ll be encouraged and feel like a faithful friend is walking alongside you through your in-between. Keep pressing forward.

Kat is such a gifted writer and storyteller! I had the privilege of listening to Kat teach about "in-between places" in our Sunday school class last year, and I could not be more excited that she penned this message for all of us to read! Kat so beautifully weaves together insightful commentary on the story of 'the woman at the well' and stories from her own life, allowing her audience to learn and grow both intellectually and spiritually as they navigate their own in-between place.

Kat Armstrong’s second book, much like her first, did not disappoint. I’ve read the story of the woman at the well many times, but never made the connections made in this book. I’m thankful for Armstrong’s voice speaking into the pain that so many feel. She’s not afraid to tackle difficult subjects and bring Jesus right in the middle of it all because that’s where he’s suppose to be. This is a book I will come back to again and again as I go through life’s difficult phases.

This book is a needed companion for uncertain times. With well-told anecdotes and deep dive details from one of the most compelling stories in Scripture, she unpacks how Jesus sees us, meets us, and changes everything when we need it most. If you need the comfort of Jesus in your season right now, this book will show you how he does that and more in every kind of circumstance.

As I first started diving into this read I was enjoying it and had high hopes for it. As someone who is currently living in a situation you might consider an “in-between place” I had high hopes. As much as I wanted to love it though, I felt myself growing increasingly uncomfortable with some of the statements and claims that were made. The chapters seemed unfocused to the topics at hand and seemed to all cycle back to complaining about men. There were Bible stories connected that I felt uneasy accepting her interpretations on and I didn’t agree with the connections made. I think she had good points she was trying to make, but I think she missed the point in her delivery. The author made statements that she promised she wasn’t a feminist, but it still came off that way. Don’t get me wrong, she also made some good points, but I think she also went too far. The book seemed to be more about conflicts between men and women than it did the in-between places. For me it wasn’t a favorite read, but I’d recommend checking out some other reviews before basing your decision to read or not.

I chose this book mainly based on the title. When I first bought it, I felt very “stuck” in an in-between place I did not care for and I based on the title and the synopsis on the back cover, I thought this would be the perfect reading companion to encourage me during this difficult season. Unfortunately the book did not fare so well, in my opinion. I decided to read this book for my small group at church and for the most part all of us girls agreed that though the book wasn’t a “bad” read so to speak, it certainly wasn’t the best. The author brings some good points and themes but her examples really fall short and some of the connections she makes between the woman at the well and historical figures/other Biblical characters don’t really make a lot of sense… I really wish the author would’ve chosen clearer examples to illustrate her points (because some of them were really good….particularly liked the ones about the importance of community) and that the writing was better (or maybe get a better editor?)…..

With the past year that we have ALL had, chances are many of us have felt as though our lives have in many ways been put on hold... and that we're just kind of in-between the before and whatever comes next. Covid aside, I think many of us also find ourselves feeling this way at one point in time or another. This book is for the women in those moments.

Kat Armstrong takes a deeper look at John 4 and the woman at the well. Combined with biblical truths and personal stories, this book offers encouragement to women in those middle stages of life. It is well though out and well-written. I appreciate the vulnerability the author offers in sharing her own stories while also giving us a better understanding of this well known Bible story and how it can be applied to our own lives.

I loved the new-to-me information about the Samaritan woman at the well, but I did not love this book. Perhaps it’s because I’m a few decades older than the author. Or the decisions I’ve made in life have been very different than her’s.

I usually pass the books I read along to someone that God puts in mind as I read the last chapter. I don’t know who, if anyone, I will pass this book on to. Why? Much of Kat’s personal history reads as humble bragging (although I don’t believe at all that was intentional). Her life as she tells it leaves me with the impression that she’s a privileged upper middle class white girl who’s made mostly good choices. In many ways this is far, far away from my own history and well as those of most of the women I know. And honestly, it often got in the way of what I read the book to learn about — the Samaritan woman.

I’m now on chapter 8 and I’ll keep reading, but I’m not likely to pass this book on to anyone.
